Now what about me? I’ve done a lot of writing, but way back before I even dreamed I could be a professional writer I was just the youngest in a big family. My Dad was a surveyor with an edge of brilliance. My Mum was from gipsy roots and used to drive around in a goat-cart (yes, really!) when she was little. Once we were rich (although I didn’t know it then, and it was all thanks to my Dad’s ingenuity) and then suddenly – pretty shockingly, really – we were poor (thanks to greedy people who exploited his kindness). I have to tell you, rich is better. But the great thing about life is, even painful events pass, and if you make bad choices, hopefully you learn from them.

The Manor is the latest gangland thriller from bestseller Jessie Keane and is a gritty gangland novel featuring the Stone family set in London and moves seamlessly between the 1950s and 1980s. The narrative begins in the 1950s with 9-year-old Charlie Stone in the process of being arrested after raiding the greengrocers and throwing apples and pears over the fence to his mates alongside lifelong partner in crime Terry Barton. Luckily, they both manage to scarper. Charlie is head of the Charlie Boys gang. As a form of initiation, Bill ’Beezer’ and Col Crowley were given the task of stealing a half-pound box of chocolates from the sweet shop both of their fathers owned if they wanted to be part of the gang. The two would carry on with their petty theft, TWOCing from people (pickpocketing) and vehicles, each time taking the goodies back to Charlie for inspection. At 14, teenage Charlie discovers new opportunities for theft and the gang start stealing cars and raiding houses for jewellery. Charlie and Terry made a pact that they will have each others backs all the way to running the manor and they did exactly that. Fast forward another 5 years, into the 1960s, and Charlie’s not only well-off and dangerous enough to have gained the attention of notorious Scottish loan shark Gordie Howard but the Maltese who currently run the manor understand they need to watch out for him too.

It's at age 19 when he first meets his bride to be 17-year-old Nula Perkins when she falls for Terry. But when she borrows money from Charlie for plastic surgery on her nose she becomes aware of the life of luxury she could lead with him and pursues him over Terry for this very reason. Eventually, Charlie gets into the drugs trade, travelling all over the world to both establish connections with suppliers and test out their products to bring home. The gang are making substantial amounts of money from buying the raw materials then cooking and distributing primarily crack cocaine on the mean streets on London’s East End and are now in charge of the manor. Charlie and Nula start a family and bring daughter Milly into the world but Charlie longs for a son to take over from him when he retires from this line of work. Unable to conceive they decide to adopt Harlan, the son of a deceased drug addict but he turns out to be their worst nightmare becoming obsessed with Terry’s daughter Belle Barton which threatens to cause a feud between the two families. This is a riveting and addictive domestic drama as much as it is a gangland thriller and these two aspects come together to create a twisty, exciting and heart-pumping read. Thrown into the action right from the opening page, we are taken through the decades with the Stone family and their intense trials and tribulations. Highly recommended.

Huge, Huge Jesse Keane fan here. I have read all her books and know to expect a gripping read. This book is one of the best I have read this year, my goodness 'keane can write a damn good book. Wow is pretty much all I want to say. Absolutely loved this book. It was gripping, thrilling and interesting but there was just something about this book that made it so easy and enjoyable to read. I flew through this book in no time. Something I regret the minute I've finished it, I should have tried to make it last longer but I just couldn't.

The enemy is close to home in The Manor, a gripping gangland thriller from the top five bestseller Jessie Keane.

Charlie Stone and his Best mate form childhood Terry Barton grew up in the East End. Becoming part of the criminal underworld at a young age. Charlie and Terry have always stood together.
They have gone through the good and bad together and continue to do so now they are well known faces. They both marry and both have a family, but problems start when it's revealed after the birth of their daughter, Charlies wife cannot have any more children. Wanting a Son to complete their family the go down the adoption route. This is when things really start to go wrong for Charlie and his family.
It seems that Charlies adopted son Harlen is out for trouble, right from a young age he thinks he's the one to take over from charlie.
Harlen is also fixate with Belle, Terry's daughter, he wants her and he doesn't belive he should be brushed off. As things begun to unfold you know what ever happens it's going to be trouble. Trouble is what it is, a nightmare for the two families will follow.
Can Harlan take what he belives should be his, or will the familes be able to get through it all.
Another book that is so difficult to review without giving spoilers. Everything about this book is gripping, breathtaking and nail biting. All the ususal cleches but all true. I could not put this book down, Jessie has excelled herself with this book. It's alway a worry when authors have done so many books that they start to go off the boil a little, this certainly isn't the case with Jesse Keane, she can engage the reader and reel them in right from the begininning fo the book. What a ride this one is . Bravo, can't wait for more.

A gritty gangland thriller that I really enjoyed.
This book reminded me of Martina Cole’s earlier books as it’s set across different timelines and you see the characters develop.
Charlie Stone is head of the Manor and seems to be unstoppable in the crime world. He meets Nula and his life seems complete.
They have a daughter but Charlie is desparate for a son to take over the business but Nula can’t have any more children.
Charlie and his men come across a dead woman in a run down place and see a young boy cowering in the corner. Charlie knows he can be his son so tricks Nula in to thinking they’ve adopted him, and Harlan is then part of their lives.
Nula suddenly falls pregnant and has a boy so Harlan is pushed out of Charlie’s affections and he is not happy.
Terry and his family live on the same land and their daughter, Belle is best friends with Charlie’s daughter Millie, and Harlan is jealous of this too. As they get older, Harlan wants Belle but he makes her skin crawl.
Harlan has no feelings and soon is wreaking havoc.
Lives are lost and it’s all down to Harlan.
I won’t say what happens in the last part of the book as it needs to be read as it happens, and the aftermath of this is a great ending to the book.
This is a great gangland crime thriller
Thanks to Pan MacMillan and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

A huge thank you to Pan Macmillan for this ARC to review.

Wow I just love Jessie Keane!

Who rules the Manor? Charlie Stone and his sidekick Terry Barton best friends since they were knee high to a grasshopper.

All Charlie wanted was a son to pass his empire onto and he got a daughter Milly. Charlie and his wife Nula decide to adopt and along comes little Harlan who is just a quiet boy from the outside inside his is the devil.

Knowing that one day Harlan will take over The Manor, he will make sure he gets what he wants and nothing not even family will get in way.

This is a fight for survival for Milly and Terry's daughter Belle.

I was totally gripped throughout and jesus my heart was in my mouth for most of it, I could not put this one down and was reading until the early hours I never wanted it to end.

I love all of Jessie's books but this one was just top notch highly recommended.

There’s nothing I enjoy more than a gangland thriller, especially when they are as gritty as The Manor by Jessie Keane. It made for a riveting and addictive read. I literally raced through this book in a couple of sittings. I will say some of the characters are stereotypical of this genre, the violent gangster who everyone fears, the wife who loves the spoils of her husbands business, but is unhappy with the way she’s treated, etc but never the less they are well depicted, and love them or hate them each one brings something different to the plot.

The plot is fast moving and exciting. Yes, there are scenes that are violent, but then you would expect nothing else when you enter the murky underworld of crime where violence is the norm. The chapters are short and snappy, urging you on to read one more, and before you know it you are halfway through this gritty read. Jessie Keane has excelled herself with this her most exciting thriller to date. Highly recommended

Fast and gripping from the 1950's through to the 1980's London, Charlie Stone and Terry Barton, Charlie rules the business The Manor it's all his, the Charlie boys mean business starting off with nicking cars and housebreaking and raking in the cash, they were well and truly taking over then head into protection club owners. Nula Perkins borrows money from Charlie for plastic surgery then paying him back in kind, its Terry she yearns for, but Charlie was showing her a life of luxury, and she laps it all up becoming Mrs Stone. This is one of a hell of a slap bang read that readers will love as we are taking through the wealthy life style and how it is earned up to their kids growing up to take over the business. I was well and truly stuck right into this book, and it's well deserved the stars. absolutely brilliant

I loved this book. The characters and story line were great, the bond of friendship since childhood, unrequited love, the criminal works and the stresses that come with that .

The ending was a surprise and at the end a - the just end.
I won’t say anymore.

This wasn't my favourite Jessie Keane book, it had the gangsters and the drugs and the psychopath, I didn't race through this as fast as I have her other books, it felt a bit lacklustre 🤷🏼‍♀️ it did pick up at the 70% stage but in a book of over 500 pages that a long wait. It won't stop me reading any more of this authors work and hopefully this book is just a blip

This book really took a while to grow on me. Initially I was put off because it seemed very rushed, going through Charlie and Terry's rise to the top of London's gangland scene very quickly. It then became apparent that the story was more about Nula (Charlie's wife) than anything else, thinking she must be the one referred to in the novel's tagline: "this was her manor and she would do anything to protect it". It then seemed to become a very lazy retelling of the Kray twins; two young men, friends rather than brothers in this case, one more off the rails and the other calmer, a wife who did not want anything to do with the lifestyle they lived by but was bullied and mousy so went along with it for a quiet life anyway. The came the introduction of Charlie and Nula's adopted son, Harlan, and it began to get a bit more interesting once the two friend's children (Belle, the beautiful blonde daughter of Terry and Milly, the daughter of Charlie and Nula) started to grow up more and we heard about their side of things. Harlan eventually killed the new baby, Jake, as he knew that as a legitimate son he would be getting everything and Harlan would be left out. When his takeover finally did happen, that it where the best parts of the story came to life! Belle hiding in the house with her mum, who eventually was murdered by Harlan, before going on the run and coming across Jack at the old farm. jack turned out to be her knight in shining armour, a Falklands veteran and the best character of the book. Belle alternatively had the best character DEVELOPMENT of the book, going from spoilt rich girl to bad ass revenge taker who would be the one, with the help of Jack and his veteran friends, to rid London of Harlan. The side character of Nipper was also very well written, Harlan's right hand man since childhood who seduced Milly just as a way of keeping her on side and out of the way of Harlan's plans, although really it seemed it was just because he could and enjoyed having a little mousy plaything to toy with.

In all this turned out to be a very good story and one I was keen to keep coming back to, eventually; the short chapters really helped with the thriller pacey nature of it. Poor Nula eventually died in the helicopter crash that also killed Charlie, due to Harlan obviously, and hers was the real tragedy of the piece, never getting her happy ending and moving from the "ugly friend" to plastic surgery and the gangsters doll who was just used. Above all though, this novel was gritty and made me want to read more of the author's work and the gangster books genre in general. It it weren't for the slow, predictable start then this would have been a down right 5* rating.

Charlie Stone and Terry Barton have been mates since they were young. They would do anything for each other and always have each other’s backs. As they get older Charlie starts to make a name for himself, taking over The Manor from the ‘old school’ boys. Whilst both men settle down to family life, they continue to expand Charlie’s empire, using a genuine business as a front for their seedy business ventures.
The Stone family starts to develop cracks and Charlie’s adopted son, Harlan begins to take a very unhealthy interest in the family business. He will stop at nothing to get to the top and will destroy anything that gets in his way. That includes Terry’s daughter Belle, who he has been taking an unhealthy interest in for years. Belle must fight for survival.
Jessie Keane never fails to deliver the goods. She is a ‘go to’ author, who's books you never have to read the synopsis of, to know it’s going to be a brilliant read. This book has everything you come to expect from Jessie’s books, it’s gripping, compulsive and edge of the seat reading. I was not surprised to find that I thoroughly enjoyed it and stayed up until the early hours to finish it.

📚 BOOK REVIEW 📚

The Manor
By Jessie Keane

Publication Date - 31st Dec 2020

Charlie & Terry have been friends since childhood. Always up to their little schemes. So when Charlie took over the Manor, Terry was his 2nd in command. Charlie trusted him with his life. Unfortunately the higher you rise, the more enemies you gain!
One day - Nula approaches them for a loan. She won’t say what it’s for! That meet changes her life for ever!

The book starts of with a woman being held captive but it’s not until near the end, that you discover what that is ok about. There are some strong characters in this book and I would say this was one of the reasons I loved the book. The story goes through the years, the boys marrying, having kids and this all starts up a new chapter to the their story.

Great book! Jessie Keane, key again does not fail to deliver !!

Charlie Stone and Terry Barton have been the best of friends since they were young children. Now growing up and married they rule the Manor.
They would give their lives for each other and are more like brothers.
Charlie wants a son to bring up to carry on his empire, but sadly he gets a daughter Milly. After discussing it with his wife Nula they decide to go down the adoption route for a little boy just to make sure.
Enter Harlan, he immediately takes a liking to Terry's daughter Belle and has some very disturbing habits which are becoming more and more noticeable.
Wow-what a book, Crime coming out of its pages, in parts it took my breath away, It grips you and keeps you interested in the story.
Jessie has outdone herself with this one. I have read all of her books and this one is the tops for me.
A real cracker of a book.

If you like the books of Martina Cole, Kimberley Chambers and Jacqui Rose you'll love Jessie Keane's books and this one is a corker! The Manor introduces a new set of families in what I am hoping will be the start of a series of books as it is ripe for a follow up. Charlie Stone is an imminently unlikeable character, his wife isn't too pleasant either (but I ended up feeling quite sorry for her), their daughter has her own troubles and Harlen..... well he's clearly a psychopath. All in all they are an intriguing family living the high life off the back of their criminal undertakings. I really hope we don't have to wait too long for the next book as this was was so fast paced and enjoyable it left me wanting more.

Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with my copy.

Another great book by JK, but it's not as good as her other books. When Nula is first introduced I really liked her but then she borrowed money from the infamous Charlie Stone to have a nose job, after which she has more confidence in her self, but it felt to me like she also had a personality transplant, I didn't like her after that, she seemed wooden and very obvious. The story is good but it is so predictable you know what's going to happen before it's explained. That's why I have only given four stars, far to predictable.

I listened to this on audiobook.

This is one of her standalone books. I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish, full on action and entertaining. I like that the story was told from more than one character, as gives more depth to the story and you get more of a feel for each of the characters.

The narrator was also good, have come across her before and love the way she reads the story, flawless and easy to follow.

Will definitely be reading more of her books in the future.

What a book!

I keep finding books in my kindle library that I have had for sometime. This book was one of them. Why did I leave it so long before I read it? It gripped me from the first page. A gritty thriller which just got better page by page. Another book where sleep was interrupted as I could not leave it unless I found out what the outcome would be. No spoilers from me but I highly recommend reading this book.

This is a tale of gangsters, drugs, violence and loyalty and another really good read by Jessie Keane. Fans will love this book as it has suspense, is fast paced and full of interesting new characters. Charlie is the head of the crime family and is very unlikeable, along with Harlan his adopted son. It's a compulsive read and sure to be a best seller. My thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.

It's been a while since I've read a Jessie Keane book and I'd forgotten how good they were! This is deffinatly not one for the fainthearted! A really gritty story predominantly based around two families growing up and becoming big in the underworld drugs trade. This book has a bit of everything really, it is gruesome and very addictive, will definitely be recommending it.

Wow, I loved this book. Well worth the read. Loved how Nula stuck up for herself against loan shark, Charlie Stone. She ends up marring the man. Gave him a daughter. Nula has always had a thing for Terry, Charlie's best friend. Charlie always wanted a son, welcome Harlan (the devil child) Charlie and Nula's adopted son. He wants everything and starts a take over with some characters meeting a grizzly death including Harlan.

Almost 5*

I really enjoyed this book, definitely the best I’ve read recently. I loved the storyline which took place over 20+ years and the only reason I haven’t given it 5* is due to the ending which was too brief for my liking.
