Luke Morgan is a rancher more interested in drawing than cattle—both raising them and eating them. Feeling like an outcast amongst his family, he takes a college art class in secret. Maddie Richards, the newbie in town, is also part of the class. Except she’s the nude model, in an attempt to forge a better self image of her body after overcoming an eating disorder.

The opening was engaging. The characters had some interesting angles, and the early scenes fleshed out sufficiently to set the tone and feel. Luke was a good guy, pursing his own interests and wrangling his own identity issues in a culture he wasn’t quite at home in, despite it being his upbringing. It made sense that Luke would gravitate to the blue haired outsider.

And Maddie does break some typical romance heroine molds. With so many virgin heroines in romance, I was pleased that she was more realistically described as neither “a wallflower [n]or a saint.”

The pacing, however, made me start to lose interest. I think this is often a common problem with novella length books in general. Specifically here though, readers get the first date but then it skips ahead a few weeks (and later a few months) and sometimes there are places where conversations they had in that time are summed up in monologue rather than unfolding in scenes of their own when it happened. And along these same lines the “tell” rather than “show” vibe cropped up. I’m not sure I ever really felt what they were supposed to be feeling for each other. Mostly, due to pacing that either ‘rushed’ or ‘glossed over’ rather than ‘built up’ their connection and the story. For example, I liked their plan to not just give in to lust; I already felt that Maddie was just scratching an itch during their first encounter. But their ‘take it slower and get to know you’ plan is often tossed into a summation after the fact rather than developed into scenes occurring chronologically. This was a lost opportunity for chemistry and sexual tension.

Personally, I also wasn’t a fan of the infertility conflict. The way Maddie handled it didn’t endear me to her. It was also a heavy, complicated topic for a shorter book.

But if you gravitate to quicker reads and ones that are safe, this might be a title to check out. It’s thankfully void of any OW/OM drama and the couple is only focused on each other. This is the premier book in the new Big Sky Cowboys series. Future releases will feature Luke’s siblings.

I jumped on this title for two reasons:
1. Tofu, because who isn’t going to read that?
2. #CoverWINCuteness

Tofu Cowboy delivered on all the shenanigans you think are going to happen ridiculously well and it had shenanigans I wasn’t even expecting! #winwinwinwin

Funny, quirky, sexy and hidden behind all the laughter is a truly moving story that took my breath away. Not because of the regular reasons your breath might be wooshed in a story, but because it was so unexpected yet real and very on-point! GAH, I loved this so much!

Wow why haven't I come across Lola West and her funny flirty romance before this one!? She has transported me to a small town in Montana to meet Maddie and Luke. Luke is rugged manly vegetarian cowboy who his swept off his boot covered feet by a lovely nude model/ beautician named Maddie. Luke is trying to define/ discover himself and chase his dream of being an artist while Maddie is attempting to come out of her shell and embrace her beautiful body. When their eyes meet is it electric. This couple has such wonderful witty intelligent banter! This was sweet, fun, sassy, and a bit emotional read as this couple navigates who they were and what they want to become. Hopefully along the way they can find something or someone they were not expecting !

A sweet book.
I usually like my Heroes hard and unwielding but this Hero was just sweet to the core. The whole "story of us" was sweet as can be. (Okay I know I used the word "sweet" a lot in this review but seriously. They are, and it is.) 4½ stars

A fantastic introduction to this author!

I haven't read Lola West before. I am so glad I opened this one.

Luke has a secret. Well, kinda. His family knows he draws. What they don't know is that he taking classes in a town nearby.

Maddie has decided to pose for a figure drawing class to help herself be more at home in her own skin.

That happens to be the very class Luke is taking.

To say he's completely gobsmacked when he sees her for the first time would be an understatement.

After a fairly awkward first meeting and second encounter, they start dating.

Neither of them is what the other expects. But they are what the other needs.

Maddie has a secret she doesn't think anyone will ever get over, but a certain cowboy...and his family and her friends prove her wrong.

Sweet, witty, steamy...just what needed!

This book is all about Maddie and Luke
Luke is a rugged cowboy, who happens to love art. When his art class begins to use a live model in class, Maddie pops into the picture. Maddie is a survivor of a few eating disorders and believes that posing for this class will help her in her journey to loving her body. From the moment Luke sees Maddie, he is totally smitten with her, and he will do anything to have her.

This was super cute! I loved this overall concept of a guy falling in love with the model he draws!
I loved how Luke was more than he seemed. He's a cowboy and a rancher who just so happens to love art and is also a vegetarian! I also loved how we got to see how Maddie overcame her struggles.

There were however some issues for me. Overall, I thought that this was too short for the development that I wanted. I think everything happened a little too fast. I am also not that big of a fan of third-act breakups that are like "I am breaking up with you to protect you from me." Not really my jam. I loved the concept of this book, but I did not necessarily love the book as a whole.

TW: discussion of eating disorders, discussion of infertility

TROPES: artistic character, contemporary adult romance, damaged heroine, kindle unlimited, small-town romance, sweet heroes, siblings series

Tofu Cowboy was a fun, romantic read and I enjoyed this sweet romance. I loved that the characters were different, a vegetarian cowboy trying to chase his dream of being an artist and a blue hair feisty part time model/beautician learning to love and accept her self. The attraction between these two characters was instant and the chemistry was intense but I loved that they took their time in getting to know each other. This story was fast pace and amusing, emotional with a little drama and I enjoyed it. I would recommend this novel to all lovers of contemporary romance.

Fun quick read! Luke is not your ordinary cowboy-yes he loves ranching and he's sexy but can't eat anything that's raised on the ranch and he's an artist too. Maddie has overcome some eating disorders and is embracing the beauty of her body by modeling for an art class, Luke's class. Luke is smitten with Maddie from her blue curls to her curvy body. Fun story with humor, sibling teasing and steamy private modeling. Real entertaining story!

Sexy, Awkward, and Fun - more than that, this book feels REAL

I loved this book from the couple's very first meeting outside an art class to the stupidly beautiful ending. Like laughed, cried, had a book hangover loved it.

It starts off goofy, and I promise that doesn't go away (Tarzan yell, Oregon Trail jokes, good ol' fashioned family teasing), but this book quickly evolves into something far more emotional and poignant. Not only does the setting ring true, the Morgan family is a hoot and I'm already itching for the next books in this series.

Beyond that, the interactions between Luke and Maddie when she finally reveals her deep wound are so real, so visceral, you'll need a box of tissues for sure. But they're not just emotional for emotions sake, which is why this book got 5-stars. They're emotions that are rooted in character wounds, and handled in such a way that felt so real I could imagine myself having the same conflict and handling it the same way.

Maddie and Luke are the most adorable, awkward, funny characters ever and they feel SO REAL! Tarzan roars, cookies, honesty and real-life apologies make them jump off the page and I swear I would be best friends with the pair of them. (I would say Luke is my book boyfriend, but I'm slightly terrified of Maddie. She could take me out no problem!) One of the things I love most is that while there's an instant spark between this couple, they still dated and took things slow-ish and let themselves fall into love. It felt like a real relationship, one that I was so lucky to watch evolve, and their hurts & hangups were just as real because of this. Also, can we talk about the subtle diversity represented here? A cowboy who doesn't eat cows, a woman with blue hair, a small town that embraces both of them in that judgy-acceptance way that small towns just have. I mean, it's not overt but it's there and I loved it. Proof that diversity in a book doesn't have to be preachy.

*Spoilers*

There is a trigger warning for infertility (and one for eating disorders/emotional abuse that happened prior to the book), which is something you'll need to decide if you can handle or not.

I will say that two years ago my husband and I were told we have a zero percent chance of having biological children, even with fertility treatments, so it is a big trigger for me. But this book dealt with it in such a way that I felt supported and respected rather than triggered. That might be the same for you, or it might not.

I will also tell you there is not magical super-sperm solution at the end of this book. Which I personally appreciated because while miracle babies sometimes happen, they also don't happen. And I love that this book has a very Happily Ever After ending without the addition of a miracle pregnancy.

4.5 stars!

Quite an original title introducing a family of ranchers, an interesting blurb about Luke and Maddie, and this cover…so adorable and cute!

Luke is definitely not your usual cowboy.
Second of a family of 5 kids, enjoying working with his family but afraid to share with his family his artsy side yet. The meaty vegetarian cowboy was a sight for sore eyes, cute but insanely sexy. When he met Maddie, who was modeling in his art class, all bets were off!

Maddie was inspired to fight her fears and the way she was seeing herself. On a positive body journey, crossing paths with the sexy cowboy would put her out of her comfort zone for sure. When she tended to be secretive, this new town loved to share everything about anyone.

What a smoking hot chemistry they had!
Delayed gratification never sounded better, this slow burn dancing between the main characters was hot for sure. I appreciated the banter and how they were honest with the other. It was insta connection, sweet and funny, fresh and sexy.

Luke and Maddie had their own obstacles to overcome but it was really appreciated to see that they were both invested and not letting go.

A feel good romance with a hint of spice, insanely cute with two main characters you’re going to love. Can’t wait to read the next story!

This book was a good as this adorable cover! Tofu Cowboy is my first read of Lola West's and the Big Sky series but if this book is anything to go by, it definitely won't be the last!

Luke is a rancher with a sensitive heart side. As if that's not enough fodder for his brothers to rib him about, he also doesn't eat meat! Luke loves the ranch and his family but his first love is actually art. He begins taking an art class the next town over and finds his muse in the form of blue haired beauty modeling for the class.

Maddie has struggled with loving herself, so she's going through a little "immersion therapy" as the nude model for a local art class. When a lanky cowboy stumbles into class late, he makes quite the entrance, upsetting the pretentious professor. But the only thing upset on Maddie is her runaway libido!

I laughed out loud a few times and spent the rest of the book giggling to myself. Luke and Maddie are funny, oh so sweet and perfect for each other. The ending felt very abrupt but I thoroughly enjoyed Tofu Cowboy and can't wait for the brothers to meet their matches!

This book is quick, sweet and steamy read. Luke is hot vegetarian cowboy rancher and Maddie is a firecracker hair stylist with relatable issues.

Luke started driving an hour of town to a local college to take art classes. Being an artist goes against the cowboy life he knows but there he meets Maddie, who is posing as a nude model to help herself get over her body issues. The two meet and sparks fly.

I was given an ARC for my honest review and I really enjoyed this book. I absolutely love the cover, such a great picture. There could be some possible triggers for some. Bulimia is mention although doesn’t go into great detail. And Maddie is unable to have children so that could be a trigger as well.

I’m looking forward to reading the other books in this series as they come out.

Tofu Cowboy

Not sure what caused me to buy this book. The author, Lola West, was not someone I had ever heard of before. The cover of the book was not one that would normally attract me. Something though told me to spend that 99 cents and at least see what the book was like. I'm so very happy I did. Luke and Maddie are a fun and lovable couple that you can't help but like. The entire Morgan family seems wonderful. Needless to say I have already preordered the next book in this series.

If you’re reading reviews for this book because the cover is just way too sweet... then you need to know that the storyline is just as adorable!!

If you like flirty, witty and drop dead gorgeous main characters on a journey of self love and growth - along with a little heat - then you’re going to love ‘Tofu Cowboy’.

The connection between Luke & Maddie sizzles off the pages, making this a “habanero hot” feel-good read, suitable for young adult readers and up.

5 stars all the way!!

He hides his artistic side. She wants to love her body. Will she believe him when he says she is enough?

I loved how these two built a relationship. I didn't blame her for being scared and thinking that it would be a no, but loved how in the end she took that chance. I loved how he loved her for who she was. Adorable read!

I loved this book. It was a sweet, slow burn romance that had some twists that I haven't read in a while. The hero is a real cowboy whose family owns and works a cattle ranch. He loves being a ranchers, but is also an artist and refuses to eat anything that he raises on the ranch. The heroine is a spunky, blue haired girl who was dealt a terrible hand as a kid and used an eating disorder to cope. She is on a mission to improve her body image by posing nude for an art class that our hero is taking without his family’s knowledge. Could this book get any cuter? A definite must read!

This is my first book by Lola West. I loved it! It's a fun, loving, sexy story with great characters and story line. I think I read the entire book with a cheesy "reader's grin"...until the end when I had a good cry!

If you like feel-good romances with plenty of humour and spice, then this is definitely for you! Looking forward to reading the rest of the series to see what the other Morgan brothers get up to! ❤

Tofu Cowboy is fresh, funny and beautifully written. Not funny in a wry way, but laugh out loud funny.
The love story between Maddie and Luke is so wonderful and there was some seriously sexy scenes in the book that give great insight into the character's personalities.
The family history and personal obstacles that both characters have to overcome to be together are beautifully written and so raw real, and I was rooting for them to get together.
I won't spoil any more of the story but I recommend you get a copy in your hot little hands, trust me, you'll love it!!

This is the first book I’ve read from this author, but it definitely won’t be the last! Her writing style is effortlessly ‘readable’ if you understand what I mean … the pages go by so quickly that I was startled and sad to get to the end of the story. I loved this book from the very beginning to the very last paragraph. You will require a couple of tissues and a bag of Milano cookies to fully experience this book. I am going to try very hard to avoid spoilers even though I want to share it all!

Luke is unique hero for a romance book, but make no mistake, he is definitely a top-notch hero. He works his family’s cattle ranch, but he is a committed vegetarian. He’s tough and strong, but is also artistic and sensitive. Sometimes he even seems shy. Maddy is independent and fierce, and bravely trying to recover from serious emotional wounds that her biological family inflicted upon her. There is a lot of emotion in this story, but it doesn’t feel like it was inserted to check off boxes in a plot outline. There are valid reasons for the way they each feel and react at different points in the story.

There is both silliness and steamy chemistry between the 2 main characters. They have the goofy moments and inside jokes that characterize great relationships. They strive for honesty with each other, even when it hurts. The secondary characters were terrific and played an important part in grounding the story with a sense of reality. Luke’s family were all beautifully depicted; I love their teasing of one another and their perfect support for Luke when he needs them. Maddy’s chosen family was equally powerful. In a completely non-preaching way, this story imparts a lot of important life lessons including the importance of not judging based on appearance alone, and the priceless value of unconditional love. ‘Tofu Cowboy’ is a delicious read and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next in the series.

This little novella was too cute to put down! Maddie is a lovely character that demonstrates an incredible amount of strength as she comes from a complicated background that made it hard for her to love herself as she grew up. But she’s dealt with feeling unloved and eating disorders, and still makes it a point to do things to help herself grow, without needing someone to push her in that direction.

I find in many romance novels, the heroine only reaches their points of enlightenment when their Alpha male pushes them in that direction. While I love that concept because it demonstrates a kindred spirit element, I also love it when heroine’s are strong all on their own. Maddie is the epitome of this. Not to say she doesn’t have her own demons or issues, but she’s a strong and capable woman.

This compares perfectly well with Luke, too. He’s an Alpha male character who claims his woman, Maddie, yet he’s able to be playful and cute and not domineering in a way that motivates through fear. These again are common concepts across much of the popular romance genres.

Luke and Maddie meet under comparable circumstances where they are both doing something that puts themselves out there and are nervous within their own situations, but when they meet – all those proverbial lights and stars happen – then they kind of go full swing into dating shortly after.

I’m not going to say much else because I think it’ll give away much of the juicier parts of this story, but I can confidently tell you that you’ll love the beefy vegetarian cowboy Luke, and you’ll admire the inner strength of blue-haired Maddie. They’re both just trying to find their place in life and being able to do that together is a treat all in its own!

This is the first book I have read by Lola West but it certainly won’t be the last, and after reading this fun, entertaining read I’m struggling to understand why she hasn’t crossed my radar before now.
If you love small town romances with funny, quirky characters you will want to one click this read.
Maddie Richards and Luke Morgan live in Conway, Montana and this author does an amazing job bringing this town to life with her creative words.
Maddie struggles to let people into her life and it’s going to take a very special man to break the walls she has built around her down, so is Luke that man...
The chemistry is sizzling and the banter is witty but will the secrets they hiding break or make them, I guess you need to read the book to find that out.....
This book ticked all my boxes, it’s funny and witty, it’s romantic and full of love but it’s also a story about families and loyalty and it has wonderful characters you can’t help falling in love with. I’m really looking forward to book 2 in the Big Sky Cowboys and I highly recommend you pick up this gem, you won’t be disappointed.

RESEÑA EN ESPAÑOL - www.jossradillo.wix/storyllinenews/rt...

My Thoughts:
With Tofu Cowboy, Lola West does it again with a sizzling, unputdownable slow-burn romance.

The story is fresh, funny, and brims with emotion, tension, obstacles, and chemistry, all woven together thoughtfully in West’s signature style.

We meet Maddie, who had a hard time growing up and struggles with her body image but she is on a mission to improve that. Luke is a respectful guy, hot, sweet, tough, and strong, but is also artistic and sensitive and his southern charm won me over instantly.

Page after page I was rapt by a story that is both silly and steamy. They have goofy moments and inside jokes that characterize great relationships and makes it so raw and real. There was a warmth, a realness that made their connection palpable—a profoundness that drew you in from the very beginning.

Overall, Tofu Coboy was an utter delight to read with a beautiful balance between sweet, sexy, and sensitive. I hope Lola West gives me the chance to read her next book on the series as I loved this one.

5 Star Review of Tofu Cowboy (Big Sky Cowboys #1) by Lola West

Lola West is a new author to me and how she has not crossed my radar before is beyond me. This was a fun, quirky and entertaining story that had me riveted from the first to the last chapter. As soon as I read the blurb for this book, I immediately wanted to read and review.

I love small town romance stories and Ms.West wove a story about Maddie Richards and Luke Morgan in Conway, Montana that captivated me. Maddie has built walls around herself and finds it difficult to let people in.

The attraction that sizzles between Maddie and Luke is impossible to ignore. However all is not as it seems and when secrets are revealed will it destroy their chance at happiness?

Tofu Cowboy is a story of love and family, it is well written and I had many laugh out loud moments that left me with a smile on her face. I cannot wait to read more from this author and look forward to the next book in the series.

This book! This book was everything I could have hoped for and more. The writing was excellent, the characters wonderful and the short chapters made me just fly through it.

Luke and Madison were the complete opposite of each other but they had a magnetic connection that pulled them together. They were made for each other but what will it take for them to realize that.

When you read a book you always visualize a character and in my mind Luke is the hottest cowboy I’ve ever seen! The writing was very descriptive, I had no problem picturing it in my mind. Can you say steamy! Oh my, get me a fan!

Tofu Cowboy does deal with a tough subject matter but it’s done so perfectly. So many things that a lot of us can relate to.

Strong focus on being true to yourself and the love of family.

Do yourself a favor and grab this book! Can’t wait for the next one in the series!

Urgh where do I start?!! Loved loved loved the book! For a second book she has done an amazing job. Loved her writing.
Luke is a vegetarian cowboy who is also an art student and Maddie is a beautician and a nude model who models for his class. It has a dual POV.
They are such fun mcs. Absolutely in love with the mcs.
There is no unnecessary drama.
It has a storyline. The mcs don’t just dive into sex the minute they meet and the book is not filled with only sex scenes with no story.
There were a lot of lol moments, swoon worthy moments and a few emotional moments. It’s a complete package.
It was a fun and refreshing read. Devoured the book in one sitting, pulled an all-nighter 😂it was that good!!
I only wish it was longer and to see more of them😒
I think Luke is my new book boyfriend😂
Can’t wait to read more of her books❤️
