He's using an alias while he's working. He's a bounty hunter, tracking down people who don't necessarily want to be found ... and killing them for a set price.

He accepted a job in Bosnia and immediately things go dangerously wrong. After his kill, someone sets a bomb in his room .. and he narrowly escapes. Supposedly no one knows who he is ... or what he does. Even worse, he thought the CIA had hired him ... he was wrong. And whoever wants him dead is always one .. or two ... steps ahead.

He finds himself in a foreign country ... no passport..no money ... no credit cards ... no transportation ...and no friends.

BOOK BLURB : As a freelance assassin, Eliot has no protection. When something goes wrong, the government agencies don’t want to know.

Who can he turn to, to trust now that he has a target on his back?

Touted as a high-stakes assassination novel, I found DEAD OR ALIVE to be well written, with twists and turns at every corner. The characters are solidly drawn with the main character having his own personal moral code. Secondary characters figure heavily and bring a lot of suspense, unending action, a little humor, a little romance. The ending was chaotic and surprising.

Many thanks to the author / Sapere Books / Goodreads Give-Away for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Dead or Alive by Dean Carson
Eliot Locke Thriller #1

What a refreshing delightful read this book proved to be! I have met a new author and character in a series I hope to see more of in the future. How can the story of an assassin be fun? I am not sure, but it was!

What I liked:
* Eliot: a bounty hunter that is old fashioned and brings them in dead or alive. He is bright, methodical, focused, capable, flexible, thinks on his feet, has sharp instincts, is personable, has good relations with his siblings, prefers no collateral damage, enjoys a spot of fun and seems to be a good friend.
* Bill: his contact at Langley
* Ben: Bill’s seventeen-year-old son
* The way Eliot handles the situations he finds himself in
* That Eliot is not able to see through steel doors and leap mountains – he is good at what he does but not superhuman.
* The twists, turns and surprises
* The side story about Eliot’s sister…brought some humor into the story
* Getting to see a bit of Bosnia.
* That the conclusion was satisfying.

What I didn’t like:
* The situation Eliot found himself in…more than once.
* Having to wait for the next book in the series

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Definitely

Thank you to Sapere Books for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Dead or Alive, by Dean Carson. Oh wow! This book was seriously amazing. It has everything thing in a thriller that I was looking forward to reading. This book is Dynamic. The plot and Eliot Locke’s character gave me such a rush of excitement.
The action, suspense and mystery all rolled into one, had my heart pounding from the action and excitement. As Eliot made split decisions to save his life pushed the book to the edge of a spy of no return. I loved how the writer filled the book with logical information. These details explained some of the scenarios that helped get Eliot out of precarious situations. It was awesome to read that the writer input facts that answered questions for me.
I love it when a book has nonstop suspense and action. I enjoyed the fluidity of the book. This story reads at a fast pace and it was easy to understand. Eliot’s story definitely reads with realism behind it. Adding the twist and emotional moments that Eliot found himself in, made this assassins story all the more enjoyable.
I can not wait to see what Bill and Eliot will face down next. La Donna, you one messed up lady. Until next time my fellow readers... read on.

This was my first encounter with the work of author Dean Carson, who also writes under the name of Anthony Galvin. This novel “Dead or Alive” introduces the character of Eliot Locke, an international mercenary and bounty hunter. It, however, should be noted that this character has been reincarnated from an earlier version of this book that was published in 2009 and where the main character went under the name of Eli Varrick, although the book’s title and the other characters in the book have remained the same. Notwithstanding all this, the story has survived the passage of time and makes for a good read. Kicking off in Bosnia, Eliot Locke has been tasked, via a message on the dark web, with the fairly straightforward assassination of a Croatian war crime fugitive. Having carried out his mission Eliot returns to his hotel, narrowly avoiding death when the building explodes and he realises that the straightforward mission has become more complicated. Initially unbeknown to Eliot he has been lured to Bosnia by a false message by Amel Dugalic, a power broker working for both Bosnian and Serbian criminals who want Eliot killed as they believe they could be next on Eliot’s list of targets. The remainder of the book concentrates on the ever more desperate efforts of Eliot, with no passport and no money, to get out of Bosnia unscathed. Other characters in the book include the voluptuous La Donna, another hired assassin who Eliot has previously crossed paths with; Jenny an ex English teacher, on holiday in Bosnia; and Bill, Eliot’s CIA contact, all of whom at first seem to be willing to help. Altogether a well written, action packed, fast paced thriller which has many twists and turns on it’s way to a final twist on the surprising roller coaster ride of an ending. I am very grateful to Sapere Books for providing me a copy for review.

This is a fast-paced, straight talking, tell-it-like-it-is thriller.
It is told from the viewpoint of the bounty hunter who has many years of experience in tracking down and killing his target for a price.
He adheres to a strict moral code, avoiding any unnecessary injury beyond that of killing his prey.

He has two aims; making money and staying alive.

The author dispenses with the descriptive language usually employed to hook the reader, focusing instead on providing explanations for scenarios in an attempt to ensure they are plausible. Initially I found this a distraction but as the events unfolded I welcomed the ingenuity of the author in weaving the plot into a finely entangled web.

This is a quick paced read as each chapter ends on a cliffhanger compelling the reader to continue turning the pages.

The characters he encounters along the way, beautiful but dangerous women, introduce an element of excitement which is developed even further when the hunter himself becomes the hunted.

At this stage we have come to know the man behind the killer and have sympathy for him when he is double-crossed, willing him to escape with his life. He has after all shown great integrity in adhering to his own moral code. His witty references to how real life compares to adventures in fiction and his willingness to admit to his weaknesses around women warm us to the otherwise calculated character.

Anything is possible as we near the end of the story and I found myself dreading an abrupt ending. Just as I was wishing for several more chapters to extend the story, it reaches a very satisfying end.

A clever and enjoyable quick read.

Thank you to Sapere Books for a review copy.

It seems James Bond has a brother, Eliot Locke. This debut novel features heart-pounding excitement. Mr. Locke is a professional hit man,but he does have standards. He will not kill children, he kills only those who deserve it, and he tries his best to eliminate "collateral damage" - people who may be nearby but innocent of any involvement.
When he is fooled by a fake job posting, he finds himself alone in Croatia with no money, no passport, and with revenge killers on his trail. The rest of the book is the story of his attempts to get out of the country safely.
I have read books that are one adventure after another, with little connection between them, but that is not the case here. The connections are believable, the various characters he meets are interesting, the adventures exciting. You can't help but wonder if he is going to get out of a situation, if so how, and why you did not see the next twist coming.
These adventures take place in a beautifully-described, exotic locale. Women are as active as men in this shadowy world. There is one s/m scene early in the story, which I found pretty gross but which does serve to Illustrate how evil a villain is and also the hero's compassion.
Mr. Locke tells his story in the first person, with an nice sense of humor. He describes his escapades in a confidential way. As an experienced self-described "bounty hunter" he explains many tricks of the trade: how to pick a lock, the tactics of hand-to-hand fighting and when to throw a grenade.
Hopefully we will see more of this "gentleman" in the future.

This is the first book in a new series by Dean Carson, called Dead or Alive. It’s based on a freelance bounty hunter who tracks down people for money. They don’t usually want to be tracked and normally end up dead. He is pretty good at his job too. That is until he becomes the target.

Eliot Locke is an English man but doesn’t mind who he picks up jobs from so long as they pay once it has been accomplished. He picks up the job in the usual way. Jarko Radoslav is his target and he sets himself up in Bosnia, undercover, ready for when he can kill him. The job goes well and he is happy with it as he walks away. He returned to the hostel Zloti. He had left some of his stuff there a few days earlier and the concierge welcomed him back. He went to his room, freshened up, informed the purchaser that the job was successful and then he started to relax. A text from his brother came through then there was another vibration, then another. He reacted by diving out the window. As he was going through the air he remembered, he was on the second floor but luckily he was saved by a tree. Then, there was an explosion and the hostel was badly damaged. Where his room was, there was a gaping hole and the floor above had fallen into it.

He managed to get away from the hostel before the police arrived, walking casually through the streets. Luckily his phone is a satellite encrypted phone resembling a smartphone. He rings Bill, his usual contact but he knows nothing about the job. That starts alarm bells ringing for them both. He promises to get back to him and tells Eliot to find somewhere safe to go until he does.

How will he get out of Bosnia with no money and no passport? Who put out the job? Who tried to kill him back at the hostel?

I really enjoyed reading this book, definitely more high octane than crime! Good descriptive writing. Must have taken some research for various parts of the book. Eliot is quite a character, it would be interesting to see how he develops. Would definitely read the next book.

This is a fabulous story that had me hooked from the beginning. I initially sat down to read a few chapters, and still found myself reading it a couple of hours later. Dean Carson has done a great job in not only coming up with an entertaining plot, but also keeping my interest with every page, as the story really grabs you. I’m looking forward to book two in the series ‘The Camino Killer’
Eliot Locke believed he was good at his job, and even though it wasn’t the run of the mill desk job, he still had certain standards he liked to live by. However, being a bounty hunter could throw curve balls his way, especially since he was an assassin for hire. Most jobs werent that hard, track down the target, kill them and walk away. The Bosnia job had initially gone to plan, and Dean was planning on how to wind down, until things went sideways. Now he’s trying not to get shot and stay alive until he can get to safety. There is a lot to like about this book, and I would certainly recommend it as a very enjoyable read. 5/5 Star Rating.

A new author to me so I was wondering if the book would live up to the blurb - it certainly did. A well written fast paced book that often had me on the edge of my seat. I liked Eliot who was the hunter who became hunted. I read it in two sittings as I was totally engrossed. My thanks to Sapere for a special copy I voluntarily read

Man of Mystery Eliot Locke, Ex Special forces? Ex MI5/6? What is he. The book opens with Mike Wilson aka Locke in the Balkans. A job seems to have been given him to review the role of a Balkan criminal. What turns out is a threat to Locke personally and the pursuer becomes the pursued. Great setting as chase revolves around Dubrovnik, whilst Locke is trying to save his own neck from a number of unknown adversaries. Losing the paperwork that would enable him to get out he is then reduced to trying to find the slickest way to return home to safety. Well written, easy to read, I suspect Locke will become a much liked series.

I sort of liked this book. How do I explain?
I like the genre. I liked most of the writing. The ending (epilogue) was surprisingly good.
It is a stand-alone novel. The first in a series but it looks like each one is complete.

The problems, there are a lot of Eliot Lockes in the fictional world, some better, some worse. I wasn't particularly keen on the comedic aspects especially with La Donna. The plot is thin. All the characters really needed to be fleshed out, maybe this happens further on in the series.

It had enough to keep me interested to the end of the book. I would recommend it to readers who go for the "hit man" genre. Would I purchase Book 2? Not sure , possibly not.

Eliot Locke, a bounty hunter, is relaxing after a successful outcome to his latest assignment and looking forward to a good evening when his world turns upside down. Suddenly the hunter has become the hunted, as he finds he has a price on his head and the word has been put out that no one is to help him.

What follows is a fast paced, action packed, easy to read tale with some twists and turns laced with splashes of humour. I would have liked to know more about the main character – what made him tick, what made him chose this life. Hopefully there will be more background information in any future books.

Overall 3.75*
This is very much similar to many books of this genre with a hired killer who has been set up and now is running for his life. What I liked was the main setting in Dubrovnik as I had recently revisited it and so picturing the scenes became more vivid. The story has the usual good looking women, sex, guns, bombs and adventure. I read this within 24 hours as it is an easy read but the plot does help you to turn the pages to see what happens to the 'hero' Eliot next!!

Thank you to Sapere Books for giving me the opportunity to read Dead or Alive is the first book in an exciting series, the Elliot Locke Thrillers!

Eliot Locke is the main character who is a bounty hunter. His job is to track down people who don’t want to be tracked down and kill them for a price. But he becomes the hunted. A job in Bosnia goes wrong - no ID and unsure of who he can trust to help him in this situation.

Relationships and new friendships made along the way but who can be trusted ?

A mixture of war, romance, power but who will survive in the end

It was a very easy read

It's been a while since I read a book in one sitting, but I did it with this one. It's a very easy read, the story is fairly light-hearted, and while a little predictable and far-fetched at times, it's totally enjoyable. I like the protagonist, Eliot Locke; he's a good guy doing a bad job, with a moral compass and rules he tries hard not to break. I really enjoyed the way he tells the story: very down to earth and pragmatic, just as he is. For an adventure thriller and pure escapism for a few hours, you can't do much better than this. My thanks to Sapere Books for the opportunity to read it.

This one was a 3.5 for me.

This is about a bounty hunter who works like a spy. He makes quick work of his targets to get paid, but what happens when he becomes the target? Eliot must try to find a way back home to safety without money, papers or help.

This was a quick read for me. It had enough action to keep my attention with not a lot of gorey details. The twist at the end I mostly saw coming, but it was just a little different than I thought.

I would still recommend this book to anyone looking for quick action to keep them going.

Thank you to Sapere Books for this ARC.

This was such a fun book to read. I loved the main character and his tongue in cheek attitude about things. It made him a lovable person even if he is a murderer. I enjoyed the first person narrative.
And while the ending was not a surprise and I think most people could see it coming a mile away, it didn't deter from the story or make me want to stop reading it.

I am looking forward to reading the upcoming books in the series.

What a fast moving story! There’s a plenty for everyone one, guns, bombs, fights, sexy blokes and women, twists in plot and cunning plans that go wrong. Oh don’t forget the dead bodies - no too much gory I appreciated that. I loved the humour it is written with, the inside look into bounty hunter knowledge and description of scenery just right, giving enough without taking you away from the story for too long. Over all I enjoyed the book - looking forward to another one 😊👏👍

I do not normally read thriller books but came across this book and it was brilliant. I read it in two days, developed a crush on Eliot Locke and found myself surprised at the twists and turns in the book. It is extremely well written, with a strong plotline, believable characters and the whole narrative fits well. I would recommend you read this and I will be buying his future books. Mr Carson may convert me to reading thriller novels.

This was a fast paced book that kept my interest from page one. I don’t usually read too many of these type books but thought I needed a change. This was really good! I started to think he would never get out of his mess.
I will definitely have to see where his next book takes him.

This was an okay read, quite fast paced, but very superficial and predictable. I appreciate that it's the first in a series, but doesn't necessarily make me want to read the next one.

It is a really well written book. Grammar is fantastic as well as the use of adjectives and description. Easy to read from beginning. You have an idea about Eliot first and it changes as you keep reading. Looking forward to the second book as Eliot will keep traveling! Well done to the author!

Eliot is a bounty hunter, a one man hit squad. Living on the outer fringes of the law, his job is to perform assassinations. Clandestinely employed by various government agencies and private individuals, yet unable to claim any support or assistance from them when things go wrong.

And this time things have gone badly wrong, leaving him stranded in Mostar with nothing but the clothes he stands up in. No passport, little money, and no way of getting home.

We follow him on his journey through Europe and his attempt to get help from old flame and fellow bounty hunter La Donna, in an exciting tale crammed with unexpected twists.

I have to say this book was, especially at the beginning, rather gung-ho for my tastes, but it was well worth persevering with for the skilful plotting, clever twists and excellent characters. I thought the female characters were even better written than the male ones, which surprised me as the book is not only written by a man but gave me the impression of being aimed mostly at the male market. One male character who really did stand out, though, was Zloti, the hotel owner, whose dark sense of humour and can-do attitude really helped to move the early part of the story along.

And I’m sorry, but being an Englishwoman of a certain age, I couldn’t help giggling every time Bill and Ben were mentioned.
