Felix "O" O'Connor is an ex-con from central Ohio that has spent the seven years since being released from prison working on a ranch in the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming. Rarely does he venture out into the world and never does it come looking for him. Both of those things change when his twin sister Alexa "Lex" Borden calls from Columbus, Ohio to ask for his help.

Earlier that afternoon, she and her husband were both beaten unconscious and their two year old daughter abducted from their front yard. Nobody saw a thing, the police are stumped, and it is a well known statistic that if a child isn't found in the first 48 hours, they rarely are.

O immediately drives back to Ohio and finds himself with just 21 hours to find his beloved niece before potentially losing her forever. Plunging himself into a world he'd long ago left behind, he crosses paths with criminal masterminds, human traffickers, gun runners, drug smugglers, blood-thirsty spectators and suspicious detectives all in the name of bringing her home.

I originally hail from the midwest, growing up in the heart of farm country, and still consider it, along with West Tennessee, my co-home. Between the two, I have a firm belief that football is the greatest of all past-times, sweet tea is really the only acceptable beverage for any occasion, there is not an event on earth that either gym shorts or boots can't be worn to, and that Dairy Queen is the best restaurant on the planet. Further, southern accents are a highly likeable feature on most everybody, English bulldogs sit atop the critter hierarchy, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with a Saturday night spent catfishing at the lake.

Since leaving the midwest I've been to college in New England, grad school in the Rockies, and lived in over a dozen different cities ranging from DC to Honolulu along the way. Each and every one of these experiences has shaped who I am at this point, a fact I hope is expressed in my writing. I have developed enormous affinity for locales and people of every size and shape, and even if I never figure out a way to properly convey them on paper, I am very much grateful for their presence in my life.

To sum it up, I asked a very good friend recently how they would describe me for something like this. Their response: "Plagued by realism and trained by experiences/education to be a pessimist, you somehow remain above all else an active dreamer." While I can't say those are the exact words I would choose, I can't say they're wrong. I travel, live in different places, try new foods, meet all kinds of different people, and above all else stay curious to a fault.

Here's hoping it continues to provide us all with some pretty good stories...

Maybe 2.5. A derivative plot and cliched characters left me underwhelmed with this stand alone story. The main character seemed to be constantly and und unnecessarily angry, always clenching his fists and so on (a good way to raise your blood pressure). It got a bit tiresome and after a while and I lost a lot of my interest.

This is easily a book deserving of 5 stars if not for a few typos and minor formatting issues. That being said, I took the ride of my life when I ventured into a world created by Dustin Stevens - a man whose world I had never ventured into until now, a man whose world I will venture into again and again as I continue to read other stories he has published.

I was amazed at the sensitive way in which 21 Hours was told. Yes, there was a man on a mission to find his kidnapped niece and vigilante justice definitely was a factor. However, 21 Hours was also balanced with the tender relationship existing between a twin brother and sister and the lengths they would go to protect, or shield, each other from undue pain and heartache.

I visited the underbelly of a world which exists in some places, for sure, but I'm content for them to remain part of the fiction worlds I venture into on occasion. Suspenseful storytelling at its best!

3.5 not rounded

This was an entertaining book with a strong suspense element. However, there were several timeframe problems (I stopped reading to page back to check an earlier time) and several homonym problems ("course" instead of "coarse"). So I deducted a point, but will look forward to another book by Mr. Stevens.

A simple "punch bad guy in the face" and "bang bang bang" kinda thriller. Read like a movie from the 80s.

Anyway, good entertainment

Self styled cowboy "O" (yes, really) is called from the ranch to rescue his young niece who has been kidnapped in a brutal attack on the parents. There are no clues as to the motive or perpetrators and the police are scratching their heads waiting for a ransom demand. The kidnappers have messed with the wrong family! "O" can overcome any odds, function completely normally regardless of any injury or handicap and deal with any situation he find himself in. It's not a terrible book and I can see why some readers enjoyed it. The set up and plot are good, but a combination of the main character and the audio narration mean that a 2 star rating is the best I can give. There are many excellent audio narrators, but this one aims for Elliot Gould reading Raymond Chandler but hits Butch (from Tom & Jerry) telling you how his mother died.

A great read.

Felix and Lex are twins. When Felix receives a call from his sister Lex he knows it's going to be trouble. His brother In--law Ricky Borden is a state foosball player who Felix doesn't think that much of, but he does for his going on 3 years old niece, Annie and is shocked to discover she's been kidnapped and Ricky badly injured in hospital. There is nothing Felix wouldn't do for Annie so when Lex askes him to find the ones who did it and bring Annie home, naturally he says yes. Along the way, Felix finds plenty of trouble, even for some of the way with Watt who works with the police force, Felix feels he can do without her. There are plenty of nasty people along the way, even killing some. When Felix finds out more that's going on it makes him more determined to get Annie, no matter what he goes through to do it.
There is a lot of action going on in this book with just about all the characters not likable at all. It's an inside of corruption, murder, and much more that goes on today.
A Highly recommended read.

One thing for certain when a reader picks up a novel by Dustin Stevens. Plenty of action and more than a couple of bodies. This one is no different. "O", an ex con, is looking for his kidnapped niece and he's on a tight time frame.

O’Connor isn’t the sociable type, but he cares deeply for his mother, his twin sister, and her child, two-year-old Annie. When his sister and her husband are attacked and their child stolen, O’Connor rushes to their aid. He learns that once a child is snatched by traffickers, if it is not rescued within the first 48 hours, it is gone, never to be recovered. O’Connor is counting the hours. If the experts can’t find her, who can? He will risk his reputation and his life for her.

Despite a number of errors, here is a powerfully written thriller that captures us from page one and takes us on a wild ride. Pacing is excellent. Stevens knows when to put us inside O’Connor’s thoughts and when to plunge us into the action--and then increase it. We are with O’Connor in each detailed setting and conflict, whether it is in a hospital or the guts of a criminal organization.

Most thrillers will set the time and location at the beginning of each chapter, as a way to build tension. Often the reader will overlook it. However, Steven’s way is masterful. The reader can’t miss the time of day, its hour or the hours remaining in the hunt for the kidnappers because he mentions it either in the description, the action, or the dialogue. It keeps us riveted.

Here is a thriller that does not disappoint.

This novel is very intense in a realistic and scary way. I could easily imagine myself being in that same situation. Stevens’ very blunt and visual descriptions not only provide graphic images of the scenery but that also help develop the character of the protagonist. His understated descriptions actually serve to heighten the intensity of the novel.

The main character in this novel is one of those rare individuals that you instinctively want to know. He may be a little rough around the edges but he is the type of person that you’d want to have in your life. The supporting cast is just that, support for the wonderful main character who could easily carry this novel all on his own.

This is one of those novels that really makes you think. It makes you wonder what you’d do if you were in the same situation. I couldn’t put this book down for a second. It’s introduced me to an entirely new world that I can’t get enough of, even if it scares me.

Please note that I received this novel free of charge from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Truly a book I could not put down. The tension starts to build when O receives a call from his twin sister, and it never lets up as he travels to Ohio, visits his old prison, beards two crime bosses in their lair and travels to the Cincinnati water front to confront the top dog. He picks up a number of injuries along the way and carries on a love-hate relationship with the detective assigned to recover his niece. Toss in a number of one-on-one fights with large killers, and you begin to understand how intense this story is. There are more subplot than I can mention that focus on the relationships between the family members. There is just the right level of description to keep good images in the reader's mind without slowing the narrative. Whether it is branding calves on the range or piloting a barge on the Ohio River Stevens gets the details right and brings the reader in. Put this on your purchase list because you will want to read it more than once.

Rate: 4.5 stars

This is definitely the kind of book that you'll be elated to watch on the big screen. Every page never fails to leave you on edge, because the author depicted each scene with clarity and vividness making it so realistic. It allows you to experience every pain (and I mean a LOT of pain) and triumph the character has to go through just to save his niece. Every character is developed fairly making them useful and vital to the story. I only rated it 4.5 stars because of some grammatical errors and a few parts that I feel unnecessary.

I would highly recommend this to everyone who wants a realistic piece of action. :)

Okay story.

Story was heartbreaking, but long and detailed fights was hard to read. O'Connor character must be super human, he kept fighting and swimming with cast in his arm, tire iron, gun in his belt. Too farfetched fights, maybe 20 to 30 male might enjoy this story. Needs a good editing, not for 70+ grandmother.

A nice easy read

I appreciate the lack of swear words and trashy sex that so many writers think are necessary. This story goes right along without that stuff. Some of it I a bit unbelievable, but still, listening on my kindle, makes my day go faster! I enjoy his books and have read several.

Well written. Like it from beginning to end. I recommend it to anyone who like suspense genre. Every character has it's own place, well defined. My son will surely like it when he will understand English well enough.

O (his nickname for Felix) and Alexa are twins, and, despite their distance, have remained close. O served time in prison years ago and is now making an honest living on a ranch in Wyoming. When Lex calls, O knows that something is wrong. He travels to Ohio to help.

When O arrives, he finds that Lex's husband is in the hospital and their 3-year-old daughter has been kidnapped. Knowing that time is crucial in a kidnapping (and he's already lost several hours), O sets out to find his niece. Since he served time in prison, O knows a little something about criminal activity and is able to pursue the case farther than the police.

O is a good character. He made a mistake, served time in prison, and has since kept out of trouble. He works on a ranch in Wyoming, which is a physically demanding job and keeps him strong. Despite his past mistake, O is honest and has a good heart. When he learns that his niece has disappeared, his "prison instincts" kick in.

O isn't perfect, though. He's not the "knight in shining armor" as so many authors portray their characters. He has flaws. Besides his criminal past, O has another flaw. He dislikes his brother-in-law. He dislikes the man so much that O finds it hard to summon up any sympathy for the man as he's lying in a hospital bed. Still, O had enough good morals to put his personal grudge aside so that he can find his niece.

I liked the plot of the novel, but I thought the novel moved too slowly for a thriller. The author gave too much detail to scenes which slowed the story.

I also didn't care for so much violence. I understand the circumstances, but I didn't care for those scenes.

This is a good novel and has a good moral to it. I just wish it had moved faster.

21 Hours is about a brother (Felix)who is called upon by his heffa sister (Lex) to help her find her kidnapped daughter that was taken from her and her abusive hubby (they both were beaten the hell up and they deserved it in my opinion, once you find out about their character traits)...Felix has 21 hours to find his kidnapped niece (Annie) and has to fight his way thru many shady characters to do so.

This was my first Dustin Stevens novel and I received it as a free download and I am glad it was free because I felt it was just ok. It was a fast read and an even faster adventure. I find it amazing how Felix was able to easily find all the info and characters he needed to, just when he needed to and of course in the nick of time.

I felt Felix's character wasn't developed enough for me to 'really' care if he got beaten up or even killed. His sister and brother in law are both assholes with secrets that made you absolutely not like them; I didn't connect with any of the characters. Felix went hard for his family; and was willing to sacrifice anyone and anything that got in his way to find lil Annie.

Wow, get ready for a wild ride.

First of all let me say that none of this could really happen. The human body cannot possibly sustain the shear volume of injuries and abuse that happens to this books main character in the space of 21 hours. The good news is...You won't care. You will be rooting for our hero and Love every bit of his masochistic nature, as he puts his life on the line to find his 2 year old niece, after she is snatched by 3 violent masked men. There is a few week spots in the plot, making me wonder how our hero can be so sure he is on the right track, so willing be reckless with his own life, even though the evidence barley supports that he has found her kidnappers... I mean if he is dead, he'll NEVER find her, right? But there's not one thing he does halfway..I mean this guy is COMMITTED, and you'll love him for it. The book is just so much fun and you are a fan swept up in the hunt just like our hero. The author knows how to make you see the action, if not feel the pain and the action?..it never flags. Read it!

Meh. An angry "hero" who kills all sorts of "bad guys" and doesn't even get pulled in for any crime? An idiot who doesn't include the police on his one man crusade against the child nappers and who stumbles onto the right place quite easily? Any city would have made an effort to at least look as if they were following the letter of the law, not simply sweeping dead bodies under the rug.

Hard to relate to anything this fictionalized.

I've known folks who've not got to a doctor with a broken arm, but never one who actually stopped at the doctor to get it put in a cast when they were in a rush. And hey, now most casts are fiberglass not old fashioned plaster, plus chances are better that it will disintegrate rather than "swell". I've also know folks who have cut a cast off when it started to interfere with their movement...guess that would have been too logical for this hero who at the time also had a large ceramic knife. Huh? Why'd I want to do that? I guess that was part of the mystery, why he was so dense about some things.

I really enjoyed this book, it was easy to read no fluff or waffle to bloat out the pages just action from beginning to end. When your hero has only given himself 21 hour to find his neice who has been kidnapped there is no room for time wasting and there was definitely none to be seen anywhere.

Maybe in real life the sheer amount of punishment his body took in that 21 hours is perhaps more than the average human could suffer and still be able to function but that's what fiction is supposed to be. I'm also not convinced your average police detective would be so understanding but once again this is fiction and it's nice to be able to get lost in the book and have the good guys win and the bad guys all end up the way they deserved without the technicalities of real life getting in the way.

If you are looking for a quick read full of excitment then look no further.

Felix "O" O'Connor is out west on a ranch branding cattle when he gets a call from his sister and learns that she and her well know college football star husband have been attacked in their front yard and their daughter kidnapped. With his sister injured and her husband in a coma Felix drops everything and drives back to their home in Ohio. Felix has a slight problem in that he has been released from prison and has a record and is not looked on kindly by the police or by his sisters in-laws. He has promised to do everything possible to find and rescue his niece and sets out to do so. What follows is a dangerous and deadly task that takes him up against a wide spread and organized trafficking ring and much more which leaves him battered and injured and he had only 21 hours to succeed. Will he make it? Find it and read it to see.

I loved the story and the charaters. But, it reminded me of a the new movies these days that are all shoot'em up and the lead character takes a beating around every corner and with all his injuries keeps fighting till the mission is complete. O is an ex-con working on a ranch in Wyoming. He gets a call from his twin sister to come home. She and her husband were attacked and their 2 year old daughter was taken. He comes home, follows some leads each of which result in information as well as gunshot wounds, broked wrist and gunshot through the shoulder (the short list). These leads bring him to the major player who runs drugs, guns and children out of a pier in Cincinnati. Needless to say O finds what he is looking for before he passes out and ends up in the hospital. Would make a great movie, not quite a good read.

Nothing original here. Ex-con is called back home to rescue his kidnapped niece. One confrontation after another with unsavory characters offers all the bloody fighting that makes up much of the story. I listened to the audio so didn’t encounter errors in printing mentioned by other reviewers, and the reader was fine. Lots of action.

SPOILER: The most improbable part of the story was when he finally finds his little traumatized 2-yr old niece on a ship locked up with other kidnapped kids, she went right to him and said his name. Now, he’s been working on a cattle ranch in Wyoming, hasn’t been around her in her short life, and despite her terror, she knows him and is relieved he’s there. Does that sound like the behavior of a 2-yr old to anyone? Not to me. It was just a heartwarming way to end the story.

Mixed Feelings...

In order to enjoy this story you have to be willing to suspend your disbelief. I read a lot of fanciful or sci-fi like genre filled with unreal things, like zombies. The difference being, in that world, it could be believable.
This story takes place in the real world under potentially real circumstances. That's where the real ends. There are only so many instances when you are willing to chalk things up to adrenaline. Now if the guy was a cyborg from an alternate reality who time travelled into the story, he would be more believable. But the idea that an uncle would be willing to go through hell or give up his life to save his two year old niece was lovely.

I received this book free from Varacious reader only.
I enjoyed this book immensely . It is not the typical western cowboy type book. The hero “O” is a tough ex-con who will do whatever it takes to help his family. When his twin sister and husband are beaten senseless and their two year old daughter is kidnapped he vows to do whatever it takes to get her back.
His adventure includes all the criminal elements he had spent the last 7 years avoiding by staying out on the ranch. He uses all his contacts and smarts tracking down leads .
He meets a tough investigator who is on the case and who may or may not be a help to his mission
He ends up with gun runners, drug dealers, human traffickers and crooked cops all to try to save his niece.
This is a great fast paced read. Loved it

Yes Dustin! It's superb!!!!

I think it's my favorite one too! What a guy O is. Nothing will stop him until he finds Annie. He goes through hell but he won't stop no matter how much they hurt him! I literally could not put it down. I read it straight through even though I didn't start until after 9 p.m. It was worth the lost sleep. Luckily I am retired so I didn't have to get up for work. Please keep writing them and I'll keep reading them as long as you do or until I die and since you're much younger than me, I'll bet on the latter of those options. Thank you so much for the hours of enjoyment you give me. I think it's fair to say I'm one of your top fans. Don't miss this one, people, you'll be sorry if you do!! Highly recommended.

21 Hours is an easy reasonably paced action story. In many ways it is heartrending: although a fictional tale, it portrays a realty which is horrible to imagine. It reminds the reader that such things not only go on but appear to be on the increase i.e. ‘human trafficking’. But this is not the place to discuss such matters. The story is consequently, in part, an emotionally human one.

The protagonist fulfils the role of ‘hero’ well. He undergoes no end of physical hardships, his survival of which sometimes boarders on the unbelievable. But after all that is the nature of ‘heroes’.

Good suspense! It began on a ranch, and since I am not into westerns, didn't think I would enjoy this book. Fortunately, the ranch was left quickly for the city. It was there I truly loved the hero and his ability to not let anyone or anything stop him from his goal of finding his niece. It read very fast because of the suspense, which seemed fit for an action packed movie. My only complaint is for the editors. There were a number of misspellings, a few grammatical errors and what seemed to be a mistake regarding a time line. Despite those things, I really enjoyed the plot and will definitely read more books by Mr. Stevens.
