Larkhall Letters #2

The Captain's Confidant

Rate this book
An accidental letter, a long-lost love, and a slew of secrets.

For as long as Bridget Northcott can remember, she has loved her brother's closest friend, Colin Foster. She loved him long before he grew up, became Captain Foster, and long before he left her behind for a life at sea. Although she knows her feelings will never be returned, Bridget cannot help but turn away every suitor in the hopes that one day Colin will come back to Larkhall and see her for what she has grown up to be—refined, elegant, and the precise opposite of the silly girl he once knew.

When winter brings Colin’s unexpected return, he too has changed. Once carefree, he is now cold, hard, and distant. Determined to unravel the mysteries of Captain Foster, Bridget writes her thoughts in a note, one she never meant to send. As a hesitant friendship grows between them through their letters, Bridget determines to keep her heart uninvolved. But when her facade begins to break, she realizes the childhood silliness she abandoned might just be precisely what is needed to pull him back to shore.

Faced with a choice between loyalty and selfishness, love and letting go, Bridget must find the strength to confide her own secret in Captain Foster before the man she loved is lost forever. But there is only so much she can do when she discovers a match between them is what she has always feared—forbidden.

The Captain's Confidant is a sweet and clean standalone regency romance novel, book two in the Larkhall Letters series.

I ended up really enjoying this one! I thought it was well-written, the pacing was good the characters were likable. It was fun diving into this one without reading the synopsis first and just letting the story unravel as I went. I liked Bridget and Colin and wasn't sure how things were going to work out. It kept me glued to the pages and it was a fun book to escape into and I am really looking forward to the next book in the series.

After meeting Bridgid in the first Larkhall Letters book, I was really excited to read her story. The Captain’s Confidant is a regency romance different than any I’ve ever read before. Ashtyn Newbold once again created not only a beautiful love story but one filled with depth and emotion that had me so fully invested that I read it in a single sitting.

Bridget has always loved Collin, but when he returns after a several-year absence altered from the man she knew. Despite the pain his new circumstances cause her, out of her selfless love for him she’s determined to help bring him back to shore, a journey that was both beautiful and heartbreaking to read. I adored both Bridget’s character and devotion as well as Collin’s growth as Bridget help him heal and find himself again. The way this was done through secret correspondence and their many sweet moments together were wonderful.

Bridget and Collin’s love was beautiful. I loved seeing their flashbacks in how Collin was always there during Bridget’s worst storms, then returning to the present to see how she’s able to give back to him now. Their devotion was utterly beautiful, the perfect example of true love. While theirs was a beautiful love story, it was also a heartbreaking one. Almost the entire story is filled with the impossibility of their relationship, their helplessness in trying and unable to come together, and a general feeling of heaviness brought by their many circumstances. While these aspects provided depth, they were often difficult for me as a reader to watch unfold. I also hadn’t expected the bullying Bridget suffered at the hands of her former friend, which was a personal trigger for me. I both appreciated the depth of emotion this book contained and wanted a little more light, yet while the book’s emotions were often wearying, upon finishing the story they are what really caused this book to stand out and be as impactful as it was. Despite its more somber tone, the story still had a beautiful and happy ending.

In the end, Ashtyn Newbold has created a wonderful story, one far more than a typical romance, but instead one that really portrays true love—love that withstands even the darkest storms, sees people for who they truly are and brings out the best in them, and is about sacrifice. These themes are what made The Captain's Confidant such a powerful romance.

Not gonna lie I found this a little boring. Bridget loves Colin who is a dear childhood friend and also a ship captain. He's recently returned after the death of his brother demands he returns home and inherit. Full spoilers.
Upon returning home he discovers that his brother has been fiscally irresponsible and also involved in illegal business to make money (we never find out the specifics of these carrying ons). While conducting his vague illegal business, Colin's older brother was observed by Bridget's childhood nemesis. A nemesis who terrorised Bridget due to deep envy to the point of pushing her in front of horses at one turn and shearing off all her hair at another instance. Each incident was met with Colin's sage advice to younger Bridget to always choose love, or happiness or forgiveness (maybe for the hair sure, but attempted murder is a difficult pill to swallow in my humble opinion). In any case this childhood nemesis (I've just remembered her name - Tabitha), observes these illegal happenings (again unsure what these activities were, and how Tabitha would have been in a position to observe them, but I persisted with the story).
For her silence, Tabitha blackmails's Colin's brother into marriage. Of course, once said brother dies (by falling off a cliff while drunk on stormy night) it leaves a dilemma of how to keep Tabitha silent. Colin's mother's solution (as he is at sea) is to promise Tabitha, Colin's hand in marriage. Once Colin returns he is understandably not pleased with this solution but is resolved to carry through with it, in order that the shame of the illegal business doesn't come to life and destroy the family reputation.
So Bridget come into this story - by inserting herself into the situation. Once discovering that Colin is back from sea and that he's now engaged to her childhood nemesis Tabitha, Bridget decides to still travel to his estate with her brothers to see him.
Upon arriving, Bridget observes that Colin is very much changed, he has an almost uncontrollable temper and doesn't recognise her (guess what bothers Bridget more - hint, it's not the temper).
To yada yada the plot a little, Bridget is relegated to the dowager house because Colin wants to avoid her. She's there with Colin's mum whose way of coping with her issues involves her wiring letters that she never sends (don't get me started on Colin's mum who was not an enjoyable character to read at all). All of this felt super contrived. And so of course Bridget writes a letter to Colin explaining her disappointment in his engagement to her nemesis and how much she loves him. The letter is then accidentally delivered to Colin who responds and the two begin a correspondence.

Soooo off the bat, the tension in this novel did not feel earned at all. I think part of of contributed to this is we have no idea what illegal things Colin's brother did. So the stakes were very very low. The whole reason for Colin insisting on not breaking off his engagement to Tabitha is because he can't risk her not keeping her silence. But silence about what? If this was more detailed there would have immediately been this tension. Because as the reader, I too would believe whole heartedly that Colin has no other choice. For example my brother did X, this is what X means, if society finds out about X these are the very severe consequences that we will face, therefore I have NO other choice but to marry this person that I despise. Especially because Colin is a sea captain and his mum doesn't seem to be out and about in society, it felt like the most disastrous thing that would happen was a loss of reputation which didn't seem all that significant for these particular characters. So the whole complication felt so contrived, there was no tension and absolutely zero investment on my part about how things would work out.

Okay a criticism sandwich. Although I didn't love Bridget and Colin as characters I would say that Matthew (Bridget's older brother) was very well done. He had an appropriate degree of depth for a secondary character and was quite enjoyable to read about.

Back to my list of complaints. Colin's characterisation was a disaster. He's clearly this sweet man who 's very soft at heart. The flashbacks in the book support this. When you first meet him after he returns from sea though he's literally beating up a guy to within an inch of his life. He's all broody and angsty. And it did not feel genuine at all. It truly felt like the author wanted to give him a substantial growth arc, so she's forcing this character to be all "edgy" because "life" so that his love for Bridget will "heal" him. It didn't read well, it just made him feel inconsistent. Especially since he drops the anger really quickly within the story. After his initial upset with Bridget, they're almost immediately back on good terms.

Bridget herself was mostly fine but definitely boring.

I know this review makes it sound like I hated this, but I didn't - I'm just writing a more lengthy summary to ground what my complaints are. But I'll add a final complaint to this list. The resolution of the conflict was not satisfying. Essentially, Tabitha, who has hated Bridget her whole life and is actively trying to steal Colin just to spite her confesses that she fell in love with Colin's brother, and that humanises her, and she has this immediate realisation that she's been intensely selfish and cruel, and changes. Just like that. She ends her engagement with Colin and apologises to Bridget over a lifetime of hurt. It didn't feel earned. I think this may have been better done if Tabitha was at Colin's estate the whole time with Bridget and Colin. I think if we had seen facets of growth in her character it would have added stakes to Bridget and Colin's correspondence and love for each other. If Tabitha had continued with the blackmail because she felt she deserved love too, she wouldn't have read as such a one dimensional character who is only in the book to serve as a plot device, and it would have made her decision in the end an actual sacrifice and meaningful.

There is a way to write love interests who have prior engagements/attachments in a nuanced way without completely villainising one of the parties. And I think that would have made this a much much much stronger novel, if Tabitha had been given a bit more depth and agency, instead of being an off-page moustache twirling villain.

I know my review is giving off strong 2-star vibes, but this really was a 3-star read for me. I just had a lot to say about it.

I really enjoyed this read. It was so sweet and wholesome, really hit the spot as far as I’m concerned. I liked our lead characters and their background, the flashbacks were some of my favourite moments.

I was pleasantly surprised by The Captain's Confidant. There were a significant number of flashbacks, something I don't usually care for, but they were managed well and felt crucial to the story. It especially helped me to understand why the heroine, Bridget Northcott, refused to fall in love with anyone else other than the hero, even though he'd only been the childhood companion of her brothers and had gone off to sea years ago. Initially, her reason for turning down suitors felt childish to me, but I quickly came to see how the idolization of the man led her to make those decisions. And while there wasn't a specific spiritual thread, I did appreciate Newbold's showing Bridget's growth of overcoming her idolization and growing to appreciate the hero (Colin Foster) for the man he was and not the man she made him out to be in her head. Actually, both characters' growth arcs were realistic and VERY well done.

As far as the romance goes, the forbidden love line was well managed and had unexpected twists that I really enjoyed. I loved the interaction between Colin and Bridget, the secret exchange of letters, the protective brother stepping in when necessary, and just how it all played out. The Captain's Confidant was a sweet romance that has stuck with me, even weeks after having read it in a one-night binge. Sweet romances aren't typically my preference. I tend to lean toward danger and suspense mixed in with my romance, but this book was exactly what I needed and could appreciate during a particularly stressful time. I will definitely be reading more stories from this author and series.

I recommend this book for fans of Regency romance, secret romances, forbidden love, clean reads, characters with strong growth arcs and believable challenges, and those who especially like love letters.

I really enjoyed reading The Captain's Confidant. This story just sucked me right in with Bridget's pinning for Colin and the plight she finds herself in as the story begins. The love letters were so cute and I really liked how they thawed Colin and allowed his true heart to show. I was definitely invested in the story and could not put it down until I knew how things were going to end. Talk about a great villain and pulling at the heartstrings! The characters were well-developed and the romance had just enough swoon to put a smile on my face. I even teared up for a second, but the ending was perfect!
This is a clean romance, some sweet kisses but nothing beyond. I definitely recommend it! Now I just need Mathew’s story.
I received an advance reader copy of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This one had me panicked!

description

I mean, I know these are supposed to be Happily Ever After books, but I was so worried!

I really enjoyed this one! The main character is very lovable and strong in her feelings. The main hero has gone through a lot. Despite that, the heroine doesn't give him leeway to act like a jerk. The characters go through some changes and it really brought them together.

One thing I really enjoyed was all of the flashbacks! It was great to see how important these two were to each other throughout their lives.

But I still soooooo panicked throughout, praying things would work out!

Loved this second book in the series! Bridget is funny and easy to like. She has her mind made up and never waivers. Colin was the sweetest thing in her memories and then meeting him in the book he is much altered. It’s fun to watch him change. But I am dying for a Matthews book still!!!!

It has been a minute since I've read a Regency romance! I felt like I was in a slump with this genre and just really holding out for a good one to come along! Well, The Captain's Confidant did not disappoint 👏 I was immediately reminded why I love these stories so much - the creativity that goes into all that romantic tension...without simply relying on overtly sexual interactions....sigh, it's so good! This is also one of my favorite types of stories because it involves characters with a (good) past. The love-at-first-sight or enemies-to-lovers tropes are great, but my heart really lies in the romances that begin with friendship. I alsooo loved this story (I'm really racking up with reasons over here haha) because the main characters are both people with beautiful hearts - full of humility, love, good naturedness, and loyalty. The writing was very emotional - I truly did not know how these two would end up together and I was on the edge of my seat! All in all, this is just a wonderful romance. This was my first from this author and I cannot wait to read the rest of the series!

Hoo boy, this was a doosey!

You know when you read a description for a book, and you have certain expectations, but then it turns out to be so much more than you anticipated? I felt that with this book, 100%. It truly was an ✨experience✨

To start, I think the flashback chapters really enhanced the book. We got a good look into what led to Bridget and Tabitha's fallout of friendship, and Bridget and Colin's previous interactions.

This book had a TATBILB vibe at one point with Bridget writing a letter to Colin baring her feelings and anger at him with no intention of sending it, only for it to end up in his hands anyway.

In all honestly, this one had me in my feels a bit. It wasn't as dramatic and drastic as Otherwise Engaged by Joanna Barker (but followed a couple of the same themes), but I still really felt for Bridget and Colin when a situation was presented and impossible to get out of, but in the end, two people who love each other will fight to find a way to stay together.

Also, can someone protect Colin's mother at all times, please?

Onto Louisa, now!! ❤️

This was a great 4.5 story that starts with letters. It goes back and forth with past experiences that let us see how things progressed in their young life. I love all the tropes in this book. Brothers best friend, second chance, grumpy guy, letter writing, dual POV, secret meetings. See? So much to love. The author brings it all together perfectly. I listened to the audio and found it addicting.

What a fun installment in the Larkhall Letters series. This one has a storyline that held my attention and I read it in basically one setting as I couldn’t put it down. After meeting Bridget in the earlier books in the series and knowing her feelings for Colin had left me looking forward to their story very much. It was an enjoyable read.

Oh my, oh my!

This author knows how to make me hold my breath, laugh and even get a little teary. I absolutely adored this book! I had no clue how everyone was going to end up with their HEA, but she pulled it off and it was so perfect. I loved Bridgette and Colin. They absolutely stole my heart and I was rooting for them every step of the way.

If you love a good regency clean romance, people pick this one up!

Sweet

I really enjoyed this sweet romance. Bridget Northcott’s optimism was contagious and was just the thing that, Matthew Foster, her childhood love needed to heal.

Like a breath of fresh air, Bridget brought light back into Matthew’s life, offering him her friendship and wisdom. She was selfless in putting aside her feelings for him in order to save his family, even if it was at the expense of her happiness.

If you enjoy historical romance stories where love triumphs, you will want to read this second book in the Larkhall Letters series.

Re-Read: March 2025
For some reason I had it in my head that I didn't like this book as much as the others in the series, but omg was I wrong. I loved this book. Honestly, even more than the first book! The main couple was so cute and I was really rooting for them. There's a lot of drama going on between them, but it's all for very valid reasons, so there is almost no miscommunication. I have other books I need to read, but this book has made me SO excited to revisit the rest of the series and I can't wait to re-read the next book.

Original Review
This was just as cute and fluffy as the first book in the series. I had the best time reading it! (To the extent that it messed up my sleep schedule lol)

I was kind of worried about this book since the main couple met when one of them was properly a child and there's a bit of an age gap (well...a large one, but that's par for the course in historical books, unfortunately). Luckily it was clear that the hero wasn't interested in the heroine when they were younger cause otherwise that would have been really icky and ruined the story for me. This story had so much drama and I was living for it. Everyone was so dramatic but in an entertaining and kind of realistic way.

Aside from liking the main couple, this book made me so excited to read the stories on the side characters. The next book is about Louisa and I can't wait to read it.

I just finished reading this book and I LOVED it!! In fact, I love this series and I can hardly wait for the next one! If you haven’t already read “The Ace of Hearts” (Larkhall Letters Book 1) you could still read this on its own but we are first introduced to most of the characters from this in that book and it sets the scene nicely for this one so I definitely recommend reading it first if you have the opportunity! If you are a fan of clean regency era romances then you won’t be disappointed 😄♥️📚
Reading this story I couldn’t help but be swept away and completely drawn in to the lives and feelings of the characters, as if they were my own dearest friends. Emotions surge like waves on the sea when reading this story. Even the characters you wish to despise you can’t help but feel drawn to and empathise with.
I truly felt involved with this story. Newbold captures so many poignant emotions in her characters and each of their own individual stories just come to life when you read them.
I didn’t want it to end, but I am already eagerly looking forward to reading the next one!
I received an ARC of this book from the author however this in no way influenced my opinion and I am under no obligation to leave this review.
This is a clean and wholesome Regency era romance that I am happy to recommend.

Such a sweet regency romance that I enjoyed just as much as the first in the series. I loved the letter writing (so sweet and romantic!) as well as the flashbacks of when Colin and Bridget knew each other before he left as it helped paint a more complete picture of their relationship. The story has great characters, a captivating plot, and lots of sweet romance!

This was an emotional and beautiful love story that made me feel all the feels. I wanted to start reading it over again the minute I finished! Highly recommend to any fan of clean regency romance.

I received a complimentary copy of this book but a positive review was not required.

"Rather have nothing at all, or all the good things...but with the addition of a few misfortunes?"

There were many times I stopped and contemplated the same questions posed to the characters. I applaud authors who do this. It makes the journey of reading truly life changing and very memorable.
Bridget was shown to be very Christlike I her attitude and reactions to Tabitha, in a very realistic manner. I wasn't left feeling like situations were contrived or disingenuous.
This book is definitely worthy of a repeat read!!

I couldn't stop reading this one because the stakes felt SO HIGH but I feel like there could have been more tension and more struggle to get to the end result. Most of the outside tension is Tabitha and even she is taken care of very neatly
