100 German Short Stories for Beginners and Intermediate Learners: Learn German with Stories + Audio 100 Stories

Rate this book

Here you have 100 entertaining and culturally interesting German short stories for beginners and intermediate learning level including audio.

German for beginners can be challenging, but not with this book.

All German short stories are unique and hopefully entertaining in content, and new vocabulary is gradually added at a manageable pace so you won't get overwhelmed.

Towards the end of this German book you find the stories slightly more complex, but still comprehensible for beginners. The stories are followed by learning questions and a English-German vocabulary section, so you can use this short story book also as a German workbook.

Also, this German language learning book offers you a wide range of culturally important information you can use when you travel to Germany or study there, and frankly, this book is not only for German language learners but also for anyone interested in German culture in general.

You also get access to 2 mp3 audio files which include the 100 short stories of the book. 40 stories are recorded by a male voice and 60 recorded by a female voice.

This collection of brief, simple stories in German is useful for learning vocabulary and some grammar, although it has its shortcomings. Some of the stories are a bit dark thematically, and in general they aren't very interesting. There are some errors in some of the translations as well as some unusual spellings which could be errors as well. Some words are highlighted with English translations provided at the end of the story, although the choice of which words to do this with was occasionally puzzling to me. I do think it can be a useful tool for beginner learners, especially couple with a good German or German-English dictionary.

When I wanted to buy the book I thought by short story it means famous German stories but they were like the texts which you can find in coursebooks.

The book was really helpful for me mostly because the meaning of new words was separately written in English after each story and I had the chance to learn more new vocabularies and also get a bit more accustomed to the grammar.

The author is clearly a fan of The Sopranos.

Would rate higher, but there are a lot of errors in the book, and a lot of the words highlighted in the stories are not in the vocabulary and vice verse.

The stories themselves are good, easy to read while still challenging a beginner with difficulty progression.

However, I bought the book due to it being paired with audio files. There are two links at the back of the book to download these files and I found several issues:

1. Only the first link works. That means you don’t get 60 of the stories to listen to.

2. The first 40 are one continuous stream making it inconvenient to find stories and listen in the car (my original plan).

3. The contact link to the author doesn’t work and I haven’t been able to find any other means of communicating with him.

If I had known these things beforehand I wouldn’t have bought the book, and as such I put a lower rating. If you’re ok with just having stories, then it should be a decent book.

Well-structured and well-paced. Formatting isn't particularly pleasing to the eye, and there are numerous typos. While this may just prove the author's authentically native German skills, sometimes he translates the German by inventing English words (e.g. "educationists").

Nonetheless, the book is a very helpful exercise that provides a gloss for each story alongside reading comprehension questions.
