Compared to briefer "just the facts" preparation guides for this challenging final exam in the three stages of U.S. ham radio licensees, this ARRL survey seeks to immerse you in the sometimes formidable electronic theories behind the 622 questions from which 50, one from each category, will appear on the test you'll take. As a non-technical newbie without any engineering, radio, or ham training before,.I took the three tests over 20 days of intensive study. I found the explanations often too dense for the likes of limited liberal arts me. However, for probably the majority of applicants for this highest level, years of experience hands-on and on the air, plus a presumed facility for tinkering, calculation, and DIY projects, this compendium should offer a handy primer, review aid, and informed commentary on the underlying foundations of radio craft.

(Why did I do this? Nowadays, I have more time than money, and thus no gear at all yet. But why wait to become certified, meanwhile? In my quixotic, impractical, "what-if?" manner, I set myself a brainy ambition that I had not seriously considered since age twelve, fifty years ago. Then, I was discouraged by the Morse Code, and the reality I eked fifty cents as allowance, making acquisition of a rig and accessories impossible. I immersed myself into an entirely new realm that I'd never stopped wondering about. Plus, since 2007, code proficiency is not a prerequisite.)

So, I admit I may not be the book's true target audience. Still, Ward Silver as with his Ham Radio for Dummies (reviewed by me), has a knack for keeping the inquirer in mind, one wanting to integrate principles with practicality. Recommended as a must-have resource for those able to benefit from both their Technical and General skill sets. For outliers like me, the framework allows neophytes to dive into deep knowledge.

Realize that the question pool gets drained every four years for all three stages of ham radio certification, if staggered among the trio so one category changes, spaced out over this period. Get the edition that's current, as there's nothing to gain in rehearsal with phased-out entries as your preparation. Used in conjunction with online practice tests and drill-down category flash cards, with spaced-out review and the diligent production of mnemonics to ease some very tricky word problems as well as visual set-charts and schema, you should do well. But cramming will exhaust you. Take time to progress dai!y over a period of weeks, not hours or a weekend, to retain data and concepts. I passed Extra today!

This is now obsolete as of this review. There should be a newer edition for the current question pool.

This is actually a very good summary of source material. If you had the learn the old fashioned way, without knowing the questions, this would help. I suggest just cramming on one section until you nail it consistently with practice exams.

100% install one of the good mobile apps to practice as well. Chances are, there will be some sections that are just difficult for you, and you won't have any choice but to memorize some questions/answers. that's okay.
