Finally after searching high and low, I managed to find the fan translation of this. I was in a mood for a good modern romance and knowing that the author was Mu Su Li who also wrote GUEE which is one of my all time favorites, I know it'll be great. So I had no qualms going into the book. And I have to say I was not dissapointed. The story so far is taking a pace that I love. The romance is yet to start but the world building (in this one a story building) is perfect. I love how the author takes her time to show us the true characters. The story may seem too slow for some but so far I am simply loving. We're seeing an actual development between the characters as we would in real life and that dose of reality is making me fall in love with the story so much. Also unlike GUEE, there isn't much teasing and competition between the two but a sprinkling of it. Once again, I am not complaining, I love this. I know the review feel amateurish but I have nothing but compliments to say about the book so far and I am internally scolding myself at the slow pace I am reading this. Unfortunately real life situations such as work is making my pace of reading really slow. Hopefully I will get a chance to finish the book within the next week.
you know that feeling when you've finished a really good book and now you just wanna stare into oblivion? this is what i'm feeling now.
gorgeous prose; lovable characters; a bittersweet romance. it's the highs and lows of being in high school. it's how that one person can shatter your guard. it's how that one person can brighten up your day. it's the tentative exploration of having a first crush. and it's the decision to spend the rest of your life with that certain someone.
woow it’s been quite a while since i read book that can make me UGLY CRIED in the middle of the night! mostly because i grew to love the 2 main characters so much 😭🥺
Longer review coming soon!! but lemme tell you I REALLY LOVE THIS BOOK!!! 🤧
I loved this story it was super cozy and a day to day life kinda story we follow our two main characters through high school for the majority of the book and even further later on. They're nerds and very smart so there's a lot of studying included which was relatable and realistic their banter was gold 👌 and it’s my first audio drama experience so it was super fun
I haven’t felt this giddy for months reading a book! I love these two guys a LOT! Their chemistry burns and will burn me when the episode 4 adaptation comes live next week….. I CAN’T EVEN 😩😩😩😩
he came to a clear realization at last: they would have much, much time ahead of them, so much that it could gradually bury the years full of loss, full of hurt, full of emptiness.
read this recently coz i liked this author's other book 全球高考. i really like the author's writing style because it's really humorous but clear.
this is a slowburn, coming-of-age, slice-of-life high-school romance. the two main characters were introduced each other as stepbrothers at the start of the book. they started out misunderstanding and disliking each other but slowly came to like and fall in love with each other. all this is set against the backdrop of high school, so most of the drama revolves around the character's grades and standing in the school.
i heard that the last 20% suddenly takes a dark turn into trauma so i'm a bit meh about it. but the first 60% is really cute and feel-good. i LOVE the side characters: the teachers, the two characters' classmates... there are a lot of comedic and funny moments too. i loved the process of the two characters falling in love. Sheng Wang's slow realization of his feelings was really well-written.
i've stopped at about 60% because i got bored... there was a period where i read A LOT of high school stories. so while this story was really enjoyable, i'm just personally kind of bored of the high school setting.
The angst is real in this novel. I thought it was as lighthearted as Fake Slackers but I was proven wrong. My eyes are all swollen because of all the family and relationship drama, and even though the last few chapters were spent getting all the things in order again and giving us the fluff we need and the MC and ML deserved, my swollen eyes were not recovered. Imagine how much I've cried to maintain my swollen eyes until the end. My heart also ached a few times. I really wanted to listen to the audio drama, but unfortunately, there are no available translated audio dramas. This is my second school life/coming of age BL novel I've read but this is my first time reading an 'angsty' one and despite all the tears I've spent, I have no regrets!! Trigger warning for homophobia. But all in all, highly recommended!!
that was a ROLLERCOASTER ride of emotions holy fuck. jaw on the floor at the (very accurate) depictions of violent homophobia. giggling and kicking my feet and saying to myself like a lunatic, “they’re so cute <3” musuli does not disappoint !! went through hell and back for 江添 and 盛望 bro
I have to say I was prepared for angst since everyone has been telling me this would be angsty/painful, but I barely felt any. Some scenes just made my heart feel heavy and I did feel anxiety over the build-up, but I guess my tolerance for angst is quite high, to begin with so I ended up feeling just so-so. And also, I accidentally saw spoiler tweets on Twitter and could guess the overall plot because of it. I tried to forget about it and pretend to read blind but the plot was quite on point with my guess so it wasn’t of any use.
Still, love how this was written. Quite humorous, and the choice of words is perfect. A lot of scenes made me giggle and laugh. The writing also takes me to the scene while reading. Slow-paced start with a lot of minuscule details to remember. I enjoyed the pacing of this novel even though slow-paced stories usually frustrate me. It was written in a way that you don’t want it to end, and to just stay in that moment of time. Plus, there weren’t any complicated flashbacks that may mess up your emotions, as the author stayed true to the timeline. And a lot of foreshadowing was written by the author to prepare her readers’ hearts. (This is also one of the reasons why I didn’t feel much angst.)
However, the ending felt rushed and things progressed too smoothly. There weren’t as many details after they met. I was looking forward to their “grown-up scene” drama but ended up feeling disappointed. Then again, maybe the author just wanted to express that “Time heals all wounds.”
I have the Chinese traditional physical books for Mou Mou but since the English translation is available for reading; I read it both in two languages. If you can read Chinese, I suggest reading this in raw. Although the English translation was great, some lines are better read in their original language.
Easy 5 star. I loved this from start to finish but the final arc was so lovely and so special, it filled my heart with love and pain at the same time because I could relate a lot to both characters 💔. Beautiful book!
This is basically a character-driven story that I loved quite a lot-after all musuli is one of my favourite writer. I preferred the first half of the novel, since the slow burn is so well written and portrayed. I found the main characters rather loveable and well-written and there was a great cast of different supportive characters. Although it could seems strange, I found particularly interesting the relationship between Jiang Tian and his mother-i’m still not sure about how i feel towards his father but I appreciated the fact that he seemed to be a peculiar character. And I got deeply emotional when it came to the relationship between Jiang Tian (ML) and Sheng Wang (MC), their struggle and their desire to love each other and just live peacefully.
To sum up, it’s a light-hearted and refreshing danmei with a small amount of angst, perfect to be read just for fun or detach form other genres-even though it’s not the best musuli’s novel or among schools/modern danmei. Still enjoyable though!
"Nobody knew they were together, but everybody was a witness to the way they belonged to each other."
One of the funniest and heartbreaking books I have ever read. There are only a few chapters that contain angst, but it's enough to make you remember for a lifetime. This book has taught me so many things related to growing up, suppressing, and finally dealing with your emotions. The highlight of this book for me is that a child is never responsible for an adult's feelings, even when we think they've matured already. A kid is a kid and they need love and protection too. :((( ahhh my heart bleeds for Jiang Tian again--he's literally the softest.
The side characters will make you laugh. *ehem gao tianyang* Anyway, this book is highly recommended!
Gosh I love this book. Made me lie in bed awake for hours two nights straight and I finished it in three days. The Chinese high school setting is soooo nostalgic for me and the writer is really good and describing what it's like to be young and in love with a certain someone. The few chapters when they parted and especially the part when the two protagonists got back together again was so heart-wrenching for me to read and it hit me so hard in a way I definitely did not imagine. This is without a doubt going on my all-time favs list and I would definitely re-read it for like a thousand times.
It was a good novel, both heartwarming and heart-wrenching at times. I really liked it, Sheng Wang and Jiang Tian will stay forever in my heart. The novel brought me many pleasant surprises, I had a good time reading it, though there were hardships, there were also good times, it feels as if you were going through those experiences with them and then reminiscing about those good times while enjoying the present moments.
I never write reviews but there's no way I can't write one for this novel. It genuinely blew me away, I've never read anything that affected me so much, I just felt everything they were feeling and I was dragged along on a rollercoaster of emotions all the way through.
”Nobody knew they were together, but everybody was a witness to the way they belonged to each other.”
Jumped straight into this only a day after randomly finding it as a recommendation somewhere online that is already forgotten. I honestly don’t know why this book hit so hard only after wrapping up the last page. While writing this I can barely get myself together after reading the quote above. Oh my god I’m so mushy. It was like the emotions kept piling up slowly and then completely exploded. This was a youth, slice-of-life, coming of age and first love done absolutely right. It’s about two boys haunted by childhood that end up finding solace in each other and learning to love themselves. Absolutely loved the characters, both individually and together. But also the setting, the side characters, the language and the progression of the story itself. Big bonus was the fan translator who took on this massive piece and did such a great job. Her notes and inserts in the chapters but also in the TL notes were like a bonus trinket.
”Before, what he thought was “I’ll travel alongside with you for a while, until you don’t like me anymore”, but now he was a little greedy — he wanted to walk with him a little longer.”
There’s so much I liked that I don’t even know how to properly organize my thoughts. Mu Su Lis writing style is so melancholic and manages to capture sadness in a spot on way. Making those hurtful passages raw and vulnerable. She handles the themes of lgbtq, childhood and trauma in a realistic manner, making the glimpses of happiness so vivid and alive. The progression of Sheng Wang and Jiang Tians relationship was very well developed. It was depicted realistically and meshed well with their age at all points in their life. The way they grew closer together by time felt real and honest. The author did a great job at depicting events so that we could feel the characters slowly warming up to each other and developing trust, care and lastly love.
”He wouldn’t take anything from other people, he only knew how to give. All he knew was to search and carve from within himself, and extract whatever he could, giving all of them to people he cared about.”
The side characters in this story really shined brightly too. Even though our main couple is gorgeous, I had so much fun reading about old man Ding in the alley, the BBQ store owners and class A. As they aged those relationships and friendships were still maintained and we got to age with them. Some parts really surprised me, especially on the topic of forgiveness. We witnessed both bitterness and the inability to forgive, even in adulthood as time had passed. It might have been sad but at the same time refreshing. Not everything and everyone got a happy ending, not everything had a solid conclusion, and it felt just as true as life. Some things can be resolved, other things are merely clouded and slowly hurt less with time.
”He grabbed a pen and turned the photograph over, watching the outline of the silhouettes printed as they faced the light. He wrote behind himself: Me. And then he wrote the remaining words behind Jiang Tian’s back: The you I like. Me and the you I like.”
My favorite part though. Oh my god? The relationship between Sheng Wang and Jiang Tian, where do I even begin. Everything about them just screams domesticated. The way they cared for each other so truly and fully and completely is so beautiful to read. There is not a single trace of toxicity, just heaps of love, care and communication. From the moment they fell in love, through their youth, separation and reunion, all they could see was each other. I also really liked how even though they faced obstacles they never gave up on each other. Neither was there drama just for dramas sake, but more hurdles to be faced separately and together. By the end I really felt that there wasn’t a single thing in the universe capable of ever separating these two again. Even though they got separated, it always felt like their love was the present, it never belonged to the past. Despite of time and life and everything in between, their love could not be forgotten or washed away.
”They could only reveal a little of how close they were in the tiny gaps of spacetime where nobody else was paying attention, otherwise they had to tiptoe around.”
The author did such a great job at building up the emotions and their relationship. I kept thinking that there was no way their love could keep expanding, but with each chapter it kept doing exactly that. Like the definition of infinite kept redefining itself by each word and action. I was so surprised by that last birthday scene. It took me by such surprise that I ended up violently sobbing while laughing because I found my own behavior to be a bit crazy. This book is one of those stories that will either completely underwhelm or overwhelm you. And which type you end up being, who knows? For those that don’t like a lot of focus and detail on the same events this will probably be a bit of a bore. Because there’s a lot of focus on school, studies and tons of details of exams and study topics. Either way, I’m so glad I read this. Might have to put off reading the next book on my pile so Sheng Wang and Jiang Tian can occupy my thoughts a little longer.
”Despite having just drank — his slow reaction — not knowing what to do at all — he still had his muscle memory, of the way he was when he was seventeen-eighteen years old. The muscle memory to pursue and to respond to the person he liked, just like instincts embedded deep within his bones.
Etched in my bones, it says: I still love you.”
Dropping a spoiler warning below so I can remember some of my favorite quotes when I tap into this review in the future. ——
I just finished this novel and am still feeling quite emotional over the last arc. I generally find slice of life stories a little bit slow and boring, and that was the case here for the first half (or maybe two thirds) of the story, but once the two main characters got together, I was hooked.
The story and characters are both written very realistically, and some of the lines were written and translated beautifully. This is my second novel by this author and I am a fan! I hope to read more of her works in the future.
**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**
Where do I start... I loved both main characters and watching their relationship grow from rivals to friends to lovers. It was such a sweet journey. Jiang Tian isn't good at expressing his emotions through words but you can see how he cares through his actions and how he takes care of Wang Sheng. Their interactions often put a smile on my face as they teased each other. One of my favorites was whenever either one of them changed their WeChat alias and profile picture, especially the couples alias. I appreciated that the translator tried to include links to the appropriate Wangzai image so the rest of us who were unfamiliar with this character could follow along.
Both of their characters are developed quite well as you slowly learn about their past and about how they were both neglected physically and emotionally by their parents as kids. My heart ached for Jiang Tian in particular as I read about how his grandmother no longer recognized him due to her aging dementia and wouldn't even let him into the house, thinking he was a thief. They coped with their situations in very different ways, which made it all the more poignant when Jiang Tian's response to his mom at the end was that by her actions of forcing them apart, she turned Wang Sheng into another Jiang Tian.
The whole cast of supporting characters were great as well. From the parents to old man Ding to their classmates, everyone had distinct personalities and played their part in the story. I loved Gao Tianying's gossip-y ways and how the whole class A was so close knit. I know it's just a story, but it was heartwarming to see that they all still keep in touch after high school and meet up every once in a while. That tough high school environment really fostered strong ties between all of them.
Pacing wise, as I mentioned at the beginning of my review, I did find the first two books of the story a bit slow. A lot of it was focused on studying, exams, Olympia triad competitions, etc. I love stories set in a school setting but this might've been a little too much school for me. Still, given how competitive students are in China, I shouldn't expect anything else. I can't help but wonder whether life is actually like this for high school students in Jiangsu, because if so, all the students must be dying everyday from this kind of workload... However, I loved all the cute fluffy bits once they got together, until s*** hit the fan and things went downhill on Jiang Tian's 18th birthday.
I did expect some drama when it came to coming out to their families, but never did I imagine it would turn out to be so ugly. Jiang Tian and Wang Sheng pretty much didn't even get a chance to properly bid farewell to each other before they were forced apart by their parents =/ It broke my heart that Jiang Tian was the one who willingly sacrificed himself and moved away so that Wang Sheng wouldn't experience disruptions with his education, and then after that 6 years goes by in the blink of a chapter or two.
I thought there would be more awkwardness when they finally meet again, which there was the first time, but they get back together surprisingly quickly. The author spends a lot of time describing how Wang Sheng has closed himself off over the years, and I thought it would take at least a little while for him to open up even with Jiang Tian there, but it happened pretty quickly. I guess the author wanted to feed the readers more dog food to compensate us for all the drama and heartbreak she put us through. I certainly appreciated it!
Finally, I thought I'd include some of my favorite scenes or lines from the story: These few days, Sheng Wang had begun calling him “Ge” at a frequent rate, but he wasn’t happy. Instead, he would often flashback to these bygone affairs. He knew that the person who would hook an arm around his neck as he said “Let’s stay in school together” was going further away from him, but he had no idea how to keep him.
After so many years, he still never managed to learn how to keep someone; he could still only use awkward, and stubbornly stupid methods.
It had never worked, but he still wanted to try nonetheless.
----------------
As the saying goes, people in love would turn stupid in certain occasions, and even subconsciously become more and more similar to the other person. For example, their catchphrases. Or, certain habits too.
Jiang Tian had never related so much.
While thinking that this was so childish, he changed the personal nickname — unchanged ever since he registered for WeChat — into this: Ok
A mere few minutes later, Sheng Wang already discovered this change.
You say that again: ?
Ok: .
They really looked like they have matching couple names, the kind where it's secretly shameless, completely subtle and yet somehow as clear as day too too.
…...They are even quite mocking.
----------------
That year, on the stage, the person he liked played a song on the guitar. When he turned and exited the stage, his back was printed with his name.
The applause beneath was thunderous and unceasing; the grandest of blessings bestowed upon them.
Nobody knew they were together, but everybody was a witness to the way they belonged to each other.
----------------
The moment he hooked his fingers around Sheng Wang’s, he came to a clear realization at last: they would have much, much time ahead of them, so much that it could gradually bury those years full of loss, full of hurt, full of emptiness.
----------------
The second hand moved to 12 tick by tick, everything about the setting was the same as before. It was still this sofa, it was still these two particular people. Sheng Wang leaned in, and gave Jiang Tian a kiss. “Ge, you’re 19 now, I love you.”
He kissed him again. “You’re 20 now, I still love you.”
“And also the 21-years-old you.”
……
For every count of a year, he would kiss him. From 19 to 24, from his lips to his jaws to his Adam’s Apple. The last one was on his heart. He said, “Happy birthday, Jiang Tian.”
I've had this on hold for a long time and although I read quite a lot back then (60-65%?) I wasn't in the right mood to finish it so I had to drop it.
Now I finally picked it up again and I am very glad about that. The vibe is very similar to WFMAS so if you're looking for something like that, Mou Mou is for you.
Mu Su Li never disappoints me and she didn't this time either. Sheng Wang and Jiang Tian's story was beautiful and so pure, I loved them both. Beware of the fact that up until 60% they don't even kiss so if you want a fast paced romance, this is not for you.
When they did get together it was so sweet and fluffy that my heart ached. It also has a timeskip but you have to read it to find out why 😄.
I do want to mention that the reason why it isn't a 5* like WFMAS is because 1. I had to drop it long ago and 2. Because it wasn't particularly eventful, it was a slice of life, coming of age, school life kinda book and I'm way past that age...
All in all, I'm glad I finally managed to finish this because it deserves all the praise it gets and all those hours I was supposed to sleep knowing I have to go to work the next day.
จากใจคนชอบ slice of life มาก ๆๆ แอบ expect กว่านี้นิดหน่อย เพราะรีวิวเพราะกระแสอะไรด้วย แต่ก็ยังจัดว่าสนุกนะ (maybe ive read too much ‘เด็กมอปลายหล่อบ้านรวย’ plot and that makes this novel just being another typical one) สิ่งที่แปลกใหม่และเพิ่มความ intense ให้เรื่องนี้คือ ปมด้านครอบครัวและการยอมรับ (แอบบอกว่ามี time skip ยาวพอตัวละทำให้ไม่ make sense นิดหน่อย) ถึงจะบ่นนู่นนี่แต่โดยรวมก็สนุกนะ แบบทำให้อยากอ่านต่อเรื่อย ๆ 55555 ถ้าอ่านเรื่องนี้เป็นเรื่องแรก ๆ ก็คงสนุกละชอบมาก ๆ loeyyyyy
(P.S. in case any one saw my review and want to read other novels like this one, this is my personal /high school Chinese bl/ ranking)
I love this book. I mean, it’s the first book I’ve read that’s over 1,000 pages long and I finished it quicker than some books half that length. I was definitely hooked from the beginning. I also first decided to read this because I watched season 1 of the drama based on the book called The On1y One, only to find out that season 1 was literally the only one, and there would never be closure in the show T.T. But, I’m so glad it led me to this book.
Definitely one of the best romances I have read and the character development is just stunning. Also just growing with the characters and seeing how their similar past experiences in life both brought them together but also made them into very different people was amazing. This is a hard won relationship, one that doesn’t feel a bit rushed and one that you can see build from so many different interactions and moments. It feels so much more realistic than a lot of romances I have read within fantasy novels so that was also refreshing.
This book will also hold a special place of getting me hooked on translated Chinese fiction like this. A Certain Someone definitely had me feeling all the feels and I will definitely be checking out the author’s other novels.
A sweet coming of age story about two teenagers with very different personalities whose lives are forever changed upon meeting. It is very slow burn and mostly about their school life, so I wouldn't recommend it for those who aren't in the mood to read about studying and other daily aspects of the life of high schoolers.
There's a little angst and family drama especially after the 75% mark, but still, 某某 is basically a chill slice of life novel, very different from the author's other famous work, "Global Examination", but equally well written.
Yo no perdono. 🔪
Me gustó mucho leerlo (llore)
