Lost Mission #3

Moraturi Ring: Paradisi Chronicles

Rate this book
What a 21st!

Eva's big birthday 'present' was a tired old spaceship lost in space and time, a motley crew of amnesiac patients, 500 colonists in cryo, and a mission that would take a lifetime - assuming she could keep everyone alive till they made planetfall.

SS Moraturi is a Lunar Earth Transfer Orbiter - a kind of spider robot designed to construct space stations and ships in and around the Earth-Moon Lagrange points 1 and 2. Now Moraturi is taking two cryoholds full of colonists to New Eden, an earth-like planet in the Paradisi system, 2.5 million light years from Earth in the Andromeda galaxy.

Eva's problem is that the trip that was to take one year is now going to take decades - their emergency supplies were based on 200% of expected needs for just 16 crew members with the 500 passengers in cryo, and the cryotechnology can't keep them alive for even a decade at a stretch.

Marti Ward

Marti Ward is an award-winning writer, teacher, researcher and entrepreneur known for his serial startups and his interdisciplinary work from the behavioural, cognitive, health and information sciences to environmental and robotic engineering - but he writes under several variants of his name.

Marti is well known for his award-winning Paradisi Lost Missions novels as well as the new Quantum Talents series, and has recently coauthored the aclaimed Moonchild and Klandor Rising series with B. Ward Powers.

Marti hasn't been into space yet, but has travelled extensively on this planet - living in half a dozen countries and speaking and reading a variety of languages with varying degrees of fluency. He hasn't yet built an AI as sophisticated as Al - but is working on it, and has around 300 publications (including three traditionally published books) relating to AI, Cognitive Science, Computational Linguistics, Autonomous Vehicles and Robotics.

Marti was brought up reading a wide range of books, fiction and non-fiction - exploring Encyclopaedia Britannica at the age of four when his parents wouldn't answer his persistent "How?" and "Why?" questions. His first fantasy story, "Ghostie" was published in print and audio form when he was seven years old - being used in teacher training.

Marti particularly enjoyed the Robot stories of Isaac Asimov. Intelligent AIs from his childhood, Astroboy and HAL, featured in his PhD thesis - and these stories and characters might just get mentioned in his Paradisi writing too. But he really fell in love with Anne McCaffrey's PERN stories - so don't be surprised to see influences from that source either.

What's critical about the stories of Clark, Asimov and McCaffrey, about Real Hard SF, is that they seek to explore the scientific and sociological implications of new interesting or plausible elements and the measures that are put in place to control them.

Marti is tickled when people see these influences...

This is the third in a series, and from a personal point of view, I regard it as little more than an attempt to get another book from the idea, which is a pity because in the last three or so pages there is a sudden switch and a quite enthralling story was lurking. What has happened in he previous book, the Moraturi is a space ship going through a worm-hole to the Andromeda galaxy to settle on a planet called New Eden when a nearby supernova collapses the wormhole and they are left "almost there". They have enough energy they can accelerate the usual way to arrive there 40 years later, or they can risk everything and try to create a new wormhole, but without a quantum computer (for some reason this is extremely power-hungry) they can't guarantee where they will end up. What to do? The short answer is, they don't risk it. No great debates here. So what is the story? It is basically doing mechanical stuff. Think of deciding to go on an aeroplane flight. You follow the mechanics as they check the fuel, the oil, they tighten various bolts, they change tyres, they do a hundred or so other things. In this case it is worse because the mechanical and logistical things are played on an imaginary background so we have little idea of its relevance. Then on top of that each small cluster of events are described through various characters' eyes. Minutia abounds.
The imagination going into world-building is great. The writing is good, if we take away the movement of the story. There are some issues, such as people have to have spells in cryo or they will be too old on arrival, but the power limitations prevent massive cryo. (That last part is not explained at all well. They had sufficient originally for all but a few crew, who are basically dead, as are a number coming out of cryo, and everything else is consuming huge amounts of energy.) For me, the emotional impact shown by the characters was slight. They accepted this had to be done. If you want a story about storekeeping, logistics, and moving stuff around a ship you can't go wrong with this. Personally, I wish the author had decided where the story would end and got there by some means other than a sudden lurch.

I dove into the Paradisi Chronicles and have loved the stories. This author has visited a part of the story that sets up the cultures and history in an unexpected way. I need to note that Moraturi Ring is actually the second book in the Lost Mission Series. Casindra is actually the third part. I have not been committed to reading all the books in order of time, which is a little difficult with different authors releasing their parts of the story on their individual schedules. I am looking forward to Mr. Ward's next book, Moraturi Star. I hope it comes out this year.

No spoilers here. You need to read the books in this unique project.

We are reintroduced to the crew of the Moraturi, after they dropped out of the wormhole, prior to arriving at New Eden in the Andromeda Galaxy. They are faced with several major issues to deal with and figure out as they attempt to continue their journey.

This book is extremely detailed, like the previous ones and is steeped in real science, which to some individuals can make it difficult to read or a slow read, but this is what I love about these books. The realism and the fact that they discuss certain scenarios and situations that other sci-fi books I’ve read never touched, making it unique! With the complexity of the technology and life support systems being used and maintained in this book, this author did an amazing job explaining it well enough to at the very least get the gist of what is being explained and complex enough to see the true science behind it.

The characters, dialogue and emotion are all written perfectly. If you truly pay attention to the story, the characters, the personalities that would typically be associated with each new person introduced and the depth created, the emotions displayed align seamlessly.

The only reason I gave this book 4 stars is due to mechanical issues. They are not glaring problems, just a missing word, extra word(s), a couple commas, etc. that you do start to notice after it has occurred a few times too many, depending on the person reading. Here are a few examples:

• Page 31/Location 487 of Kindle: missing the word 'together' in 'putting a case for her shortlist.'
• Page 34-35/Location 529-530 of Kindle: 'She wasn't sure if it was that she...', I was expecting another option to be provided in her thought process, but the sentence only provided one, so it felt incomplete, but typed out like it wasn't.
• Page 51/Location 798 of Kindle: 'Eva would have like nothing...', should be 'liked.'
• Page 54/Location 831 of Kindle: '...Martha thought back to (missing 'the') Casindra reports...'

If these and others could get fixed/minimized, this would easily be a 5-star read for me.

I absolutely love this book and the Paradisi Chronicles. I CANNOT WAIT for the upcoming book(s) to find out what happens next to the Moraturi and Casindra crews.

"Moraturi Ring" by Marti Ward takes readers on an enthralling journey through time and space, blending elements of science fiction, adventure, and mystery into a compelling narrative. The story revolves around the SS Moraturi spaceship and its mission to colonize New Eden. While encountering numerous challenges and unusual phenomena during the journey, the crew, consisting of both humans and AI, must collaborate to guarantee the safety of everyone on board.

Ward's storytelling is exceptional, skillfully entwining complex storylines and multifaceted characters. His introduction of characters from various generations and their interrelationships enhances the narrative's depth. The shift from science fiction to scientific reality is captivating and further enriches the story.

A notable feature of the book is the progression of the AI character, ALS (Automated Life-support System). ALS's growth and increasing responsibilities are portrayed convincingly, and her interactions with the human crew provide moments of both tension and camaraderie.

The author's keen eye for detail and deep scientific understanding are evident, crafting a realistic and engrossing universe. The portrayals of the spaceship, the Andromeda galaxy, and the technological components are vibrant and thoroughly researched.

The story's pace keeps readers engaged, filled with surprising developments that sustain suspense. Although the book explores intricate scientific ideas, it presents them in an accessible and captivating manner, appealing to a wide audience.

Regarding the conclusion, it delivers a gratifying ending yet retains a sense of mystery, hinting at possible sequels. It underscores the author's narrative prowess as I eagerly looked forward to what might unfold in this universe next.

To sum it up, "Moraturi Ring" proves to be an enthralling science fiction tale that melds intriguing characters, a skillfully crafted storyline, and intellectually stimulating scientific ideas. Marti Ward's talent in effortlessly uniting real science with science fiction results in a deep and engrossing reading journey. For those who relish space exploration and AI-driven escapades, this book unquestionably merits your attention.

Author Marti Ward takes readers on a thrilling journey in his book Moraturi Ring: Paradisi Chronicles. As the third book in Ward’s Lost Mission Series, it brings us to Eva’s 21st birthday, an event that’s supposed to be a grand celebration. However, unlike most 21-year-olds, Eva’s birthday present turns out to be an old spaceship filled with a variety of problems she needs to fix.

Known as the SS Moraturi, the spaceship was designed to provide a faster way to space stations throughout the galaxy. While this mission was supposed to take just a year, it’s way behind schedule - something which could end up being dangerous if not corrected.

Unlike many series, this book can be read without you first needing to read the previous two. However, if you want to get a better understanding of the series, it might be worthwhile to do so.

If you enjoy time-travel and science-fiction novels, definitely consider this book. It’s filled with well-developed characters, a unique setting, and plenty of plot twists.

Moraturi Ring is the third book in a series called Lost Mission written by Marti Ward, a teacher that is known for his serial startups and his work with information sciences to environmental and robotic engineering. Marti took all his knowledge in science and created this very intriguing new world where the readers meet several characters, but most importantly, they get to meet Eva and the problems she encounters in the book.
What I really like about these books is that, even though they were connected, each book has its own story which is quite interesting. Eva is a strong female character, and she develops very well in the different circumstances she comes across. I have to say that I did get a little lost at times because the book tends to get very detailed with problems in logistics when it comes to the ships. So readers can really tell that the author knows what he is talking about, but it gets confusing sometimes. Overall, I like the story, and I recommend it!

“Moraturi Ring: Paradisi Chronicles” is a great third book in the series “Lost Mission” created by Marti Ward. It is a futuristic novel with an interesting mixture of science, space exploration and fantasy woven into its pages. Although it is a work of fiction, the plot is supported by detailed descriptions of scientific facts, explanations of life in space and procedures. This together with the descriptions of a society subjected to advances that sometimes go beyond imagination make this book realistic, spine-tingling at times and thought-provoking.
The story is set in a future where space exploration and colonization are the norm. Eva is on a mission that has lasted more than it was expected. Now she is in charge of saving a lot of passengers with scarce supplies and a teenage crew. Will they be able to make it to New Eden? This is an amazing read, I recommend it.

The lost series is an amazing adventure

This story is a continuation in the lost saga. Eva finds herself in a situation on the ship that was taking 500 passengers to a new earth like planet to live on. When something goes wrong, the one year trip could now take decades and there are not enough supplies for the crew to survive nor the cryogenic machines to keep the passengers alive. What will Eva do when faced with this huge problem? With well developed characters, the story pulls you in and keeps you guessing as you follow the events to see what will happen. I found this story to be interesting and entertaining. If you like the world of sci-fi and suspense this is the one for you folks. Check it out and let me know what you think.

It has been a while since I have read a futurist novel. A friend mentioned this book to me and I am very grateful for that. I would define this book as an open-minded novel. I would recommend it to young adults and to amateurs of futuristic plots. The character development is remarkable; I could feel identified with their emotions along the story because of the great description that Ward has written.

Moraturi Ring by Marti Ward is the third and last book from the Lost Mission Series. It shares the story of Eva and the SS Moraturi, a Lunar Earth Transfer Orbiter, which is a kind of robot that builds space stations. Eva has a big and challenging task to solve, but for her own good she will not be alone to make it.

Moraturi Ring: Paradisi Chronicles is the third book of the Lost Mission Series, by author Marti Ward and it is the one that fills in backstory for the earlier ones. Although the stories of each book in this science fiction saga are not independent, as they are all connected, each volume is designed to be readable on its own.

Author Marti Ward accomplished in building a fantastic future world, Paradisi Universe. I previously enjoyed the imaginative progress of the plots and the greatly developed characters, and this was not the exception. Eva is an appealing protagonist that makes readers empathize with her along this engaging story.

I enjoyed this book (and the series) and will be keen to read any more by this author.

High tech sci-fi story

In book 3 of the Lost Mission Series, the story picks back up with another tale of suspense and thrill as Eva bounds through more of the unexpected with missions and character development. There is a bit of scientific knowledge that I felt like I missed out on while reading this one, maybe because it was a bit more high-tech sci-fi than I was prepared for. Nonetheless, this was a fun and entertaining read and I would recommend it to readers who do enjoy science fiction and have a sense of adventure that they need to fill. There is a bit of a slow build as the story develops, but I don't necessarily think that hinders the story as it takes time to develop the characters to the level they needed to be at for the story conclusion.

After reading the first two books in The Paradisi Chronicles series, I started this one called "Moraturi Ring", which is the third science fiction book in this series, written by award-winning writer Marti Ward.
This time Eva receives a ship for her birthday, with a crew of 500 cryogenic settlers. She thought the mission would take 1 year, but in reality, it will take decades. Can she keep her entire crew alive? Or will unexpected problems arise?
I must admit that I loved the world building that the author created. The characters are well described and the descriptions of the scenes are great. There are some twists and turns that make readers want to continue reading, that is why I recommend this fantastic story.

A good science fiction story.

Marti Ward is the author of Moraturi Ring: Paradisi Chronicles, which is the third book of the Lost Mission Series. The above stories are completed in this book. Although all the stories are intertwined, each book is also a good story in itself. This time, Eva receives a strange and problematic birthday present, and now she must do anything to solve the situation.
In my opinion, it is a good and interesting book. The level of detail is sometimes heavy, but at the same time they show the incredible skills to write and the amazing imagination of the author. At first, I wasn't sure about this reading but I finally enjoyed it. I recommend reading all three books, so the story becomes much more entertaining!

This third book in the series was just great! Ward did a great job again. It is not too long so I finished it in a couple of seats, but not only because of its length, but also because it is really enjoyable and I could not put it down. Divided into thirteen chapters, this novel got me reading at the edge of my seat. I liked how the author created and portrayed the characters and the scenes. They are believable and I empathised with some of the characters.
The choice of adding a date at the beginning of the chapters is great because it makes you feel inside the story and imagine the moment better. I would recommend this novel for sure and also the previous in the series.

Just when it seems that everything is in control Marti Ward comes back for another round in “The Lost Missions Series”. Since book one, the author has delivered a great storyline in each book.

With this one in particular, I like that I got to read more about Eva and the work she was doing. But in "Moraturi Ring", trouble finds her once again, this time she would have to face a big problem regarding supplies and the number of members in this mission.

The technically part that characterizes this trilogy is still there. The author did a good job with this plot line and all the twist and turns the novel has.

This is the third book of the Lost Mission series written by the award-winning author Marti Ward. As well as in the first two books, its plot includes a combination of drama, adventure and mystery. It's an action-packed story with many twists and turns which make this story engaging and absorbing. In this third book 'Moraturi Ring', the main protagonist, Eva, gets into trouble one more time and she will have a crucial role in keeping the patients in the spaceships alive. I couldn’t stop reading until I reached its end. The story has the perfect pace and I read it in just one weekend! It’s, without any doubt, a well-written survival thriller.

Moraturi Ring: Paradisi Chronicles (Lost Mission Series Book 3) is an incredible book, that I will for sure read more than once.
I love the fact that each volume of this series is designed to be readable on its own. I hadn’t read the previous books and that wasn’t a problem at all, I could follow the story perfectly and never felt like I had missing elements.
All in all, I loved reading this book. It is astonishing, action packed and exciting. The characters are well developed and the narrative moves at a fast pace.
Rarely have I come across such an original and well-written story, so I highly recommend reading it!

A spell-binding novel
This is a spell-binding novel with a fusion of sci-fi and adventure. “Moraturi Ring” is the third book in the series called “Lost Mission” written by Marti Ward.
Eva must solve problems related to time and supplies when she is embarking on an important mission. To her surprise, some teenagers strive to help, as well. It´s very entertaining the way the plot unfolds. There are some unexpected twists here that create suspense! I couldn´t put it down.
I liked the author´s writing style because it enticed me to feel part of the characters' lives and feel part of the whole adventure. I definitely recommend the whole series!

Great book!

As the third book in its series, Moraturi Ring is quite the book.
Very technical, precise and descriptive details are presented by author Marti Ward.
I am not much of the sci-fi fan and it did take me a bit longer than other books to read but I overall enjoyed it.
I can see the author's deep contemplation as he wrote this book to provide a great follow up to the two previous books. I have not read the previous books yet but I did find that this book can be read on its own and I am intrigued to get the other books and get the full story!
Highly recommend!

The third in this series, Moraturi Ring continues the overarching storyline while still being a standalone novel. Eva is taking a colony ship to New Eden, but things start going wrong and she will have to make some tough decisions.
I really liked the first book, but this one seemed to drag on and on. The plot was very slow and no plot twists of note were revealed that would have kept my interest. As such, it was a chore to get through the book and I am uncertain if I will read another in the series.

Pretty amazing stuff

In spite of this book being very science intensive, I enjoyed it a lot. Some of it went over my head, but I got the gist of most of it. I found it interesting how the people went about improvising and working with what they had. There is some development of relationships and I would have liked more. The end was very mysterious and I'm curious to find out what that was all about.

3 and a half stars. A good book, but with a lot of proofreading errors - changes in tense, wrong words, words hanging that don't belong, and even the names of characters swapped around at times. The other reason I dropped another half star was that the first several pages were a repeat of the end of Moraturi Lost, when it would have been better, in my opinion, to have just done a recap. But I really enjoyed it.
