Find out how Alice in Wonderland became a children's classic.
Published in 1865 by British author Lewis Carroll, this fantasy adventure story introduced the world to Alice and introduced Alice to some very strange but beloved creatures, including The White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, and The Queen of Hearts.
This silly tale that started out as a collection of stories written for one little girl became so popular that even Queen Victoria, the British monarch, couldn't put it down! Lewis Carroll, whose real name was Charles L. Dodgson, went on to write several sequels and other books, but Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Alice through the Looking-Glass are by far his most famous stories.
Author Dana Meachen Rau takes readers through the book's history--from Carroll's initial inspiration--Alice Liddell--all the way to the movies, plays, and other adaptations that are entertaining fans today.
This book is a great way to learn the story of Alice's Adventure in Wonderland ( Alice in Wonderland) without reading it. I do ballet, and I'm in the Alice in Wonderland ballet. I didn't want to read the whole book but, I wanted to know the whole story. I read this book and it gave me all the information I needed. All in all this book is great and I would rate it 4.5 stars if you could do half stars. I recommend this book to young or old people because it has fascinating facts about the author and how Alice in Wonderland stared. If you interested in Alice in Wonderland or the author you should read this book.
Adorable! As a mix of casual and intense Alice fan it seemed to condense everything I knew fairly and also taught me some bonus facts, especially when it came to the adaptations and legacy of the books. I did my fair share of Googling to find out more about the little crumbs it dropped, which I think is ideal for books like these; they get kids to find out more on their own.
What Is the Story of Alice in Wonderland? Dana M. Rau, Robert Squier (Illustrator) Great series. In this one, initially titled "Alice's Adventures Under Ground", other names Charles considered were: Alice's Golden Hour, Alice Among the Goblins, Alice's Hour in Wonderland, Alice's Doings in Elf-Land, and finally settled on Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. (p24,28)
I really enjoyed this story. I enjoyed learning about how the idea was created and how it took off. As someone who aspires to write a children’s book some day seeing the background of how a story is created is fascinating.
This is all about the famous story of Alice in Wonderland and how long this story has been around. How it is represented all around the world. Also the girl Alice who got gifted the very first copy of the book sold it to a museum in England, and it is still there!
Does its job. Reinforces prior knowledge and introduces new details, even for superfans. Dali's Alice? A picture book Alice? The best non-fiction creates new questions.
This book is about the story of Charles and how he grew up to become a writer, and author it also goes into a lot of detail about how the story of Alice and Wonderland came to life. It helped me to understand more about Alice and the magical world she ended up in and it was easy to understand.
