Memoir written in German of the author's childhood experience just prior, during and after the Second World War including leaving her family's farm estate with horse pulled wagon and just a few possessions to escape the invading Russians. The author and her mother eventually arrive in post-war Berlin and face many challenges (finding a place to live, registering for ration cards, finding work, starting school). Although they eventually reunite with her father/husband and older half brother/son and get on their feet, the sorrow associated with losing their home land (now part of Poland) is a constant presence.
