Refuge: Zone Cyborgs
By Jessica Marting

Refuge is the fifth and final book in the Zone Cyborgs series by Jessica Marting. Cyborgs are men that have been enhanced with technological parts and/or nanos, giving them superior strength, senses, reactions and computational abilities, depending on their particular augmentations. All but one of existing cyborgs have been accounted for in the previous books in the series. The remaining cyborg is Rordan Alexander and no one knows where he is.

Dasha Coran lives on Kurkay-2 in the Brava System, where four of the cyborgs have made their home. She is the daughter of the scientist who first developed cyborg technology, but with the intent that it would be used for affordable replacement body parts for those who couldn’t pay the price of lab-grown body parts. Unfortunately, the Zone military had other ideas, including deliberately implanting a “kill switch” in every cyborg to ensure compliance. That kill switch has been deactivated in the four on Kurkay-2, but is still active in Rordan.

Dasha receives an unexpected visitor claiming to have a package delivery for her. She had not ordered anything and suspects that the man is trying to track down her father or the other cyborgs. She deliberately armed herself with a weapon guaranteed to stop anyone who might wish her harm. After the man, whom she discovers is Janek Dalton (introduced in previous books), is killed, she contacts Captain Cecily Barris to help her dispose of the body. The plan is to stash the body back on Dalton’s ship, the Raider, and program it to explode after it leaves the Brava System. What no one was counting on was that Dalton had rigged the ship to auto-destruct in about 14 minutes from take-off if someone tried to steal it. The second thing no one had counted on was that Dasha had inadvertently been trapped onboard when the Raider took off.

Delve into this story to find out if Dasha can be rescued before the Raider self-destructs and to find out if Rordan can be located before his kill switch is activated. It’s an exciting conclusion to the series that is sure to capture your interest! Although the book can be read as a stand-alone, your reading pleasure will be enhanced if you’ve read the other books in the series. The world building is great, the characters are well drawn and the drama and intrigue are well described. Excellent job, Ms. Marting!

The writing and editing of the ARC version of the manuscript was very clean, with no typos that I found and well constructed sentences. The world building was quite vivid, with the worlds in the Brava system that our protagonists visited, and the decrepit outlaw space station in the Zone, all coming to vivid life. The characterization was deft, with both hero and heroine being sympathetic individuals with strengths and weaknesses. The development of the romantic relationship was sweet and organic, with me falling in love with the hero alongside the heroine. The plot and pacing was exciting and tight, meaning I read this novel in one sitting. There was a medium amount of angst on the part of the hero and very high stakes throughout, so I enjoyed the novel. I prefer high stakes in my romance novels. This novel used the Amnesia trope and the Partner in Trouble trope. The world building, plot, and pacing were all four stars in this novel. The characterization and development of the romantic relationship were also four stars. I therefore gave this novel a combined rating of four stars. The novel ended on a Happy Ever After ending instead of a cliffhanger, so that was a plus. I recommend this novel to readers who enjoy sci-fi romance with high stakes and good world building. I will keep my eye out for new books written by this author. I will probably buy myself keeper copies of this whole series, because I quite enjoyed the whole series. I am happy that the author wrapped up the overarching story arc in five novels.

This is a great story, it is very satisfying and has a fabulous happy ending. I really liked Rordan getting his happy ever after. When he first met Dasha, he thought she was an angel, and he was in love, and I just thought it was so sweet and amusing. Really good conclusion to the series.

Poor Dasha, she just had bad luck, though it did lead to something... From killing a bad guy to wondering on he's ship. Narrowly escaping a exploding ship to landing on a planet of monks. Finding the last cyborg, who has memory loss. Together they head to the Zone, bad idea, to find Rordan's missing past.

I liked how Jessica Marting has brought this series to a close. I've loved each book in the series!! Sad that this series is now over...
