The Beach Cottage is a very special book, a book that will resonate with everyone who reads it. Mack and Avery are newlyweds, honeymooning at his family’s beach cottage, when they begin to hear rumblings of a pandemic, stay-at-home orders, masks. This is a love story unlike any I’ve ever read, and Avery and Mack an endearing couple. Avery is struggling with marriage, with having her honeymoon plans cut short—but her growth, her appreciation for the blessings in her life, warmed my heart. The emotions that Mack and Avery feel are intense and tender and loving, and I felt them all—sometimes with tears in my eyes. This novella packs a powerful punch, drawing us into the lives of these captivating characters as the world around them changes.

As always I love Joanne DeMaio's books. This was a quick story dealing with the issues that everyone was/is going through with the Covid crisis. A lot of mixed emotions going on & my anxiety with this whole thing kicking in I wish I was stuck at that cottage. Also LOVE the cover!!!

In this newest read from Demaio we meet Mack and Avery Martinelli. The two have just wed and are off to the Martinelli's beach cottage for their honeymoon. Avery has everyday planned out and is looking forward to doing each activity with her new husband. As we all know though things don't always go as planned, the two learn that there is a stay at home order and that they won't be able to enjoy any of the activities they had set. With having to stay in Avery starts to question the decisions she has made while Mack is doing his best to make the best of things. As you read you'll take the journey with both characters, sharing their love, their fears, their indecisions, their uncertainty, and their hope for the future. This was a very apropos read for the times we are living in now. As I read each word I thought of my own situation along with the fears that plague me and all the worry that is now a part of everyday life. It was truly an emotional read, that definitely touched me was a reader.

All I can say is Wow. Wish I could give this book more than 5 stars because it deserves more. A truly amazing story about the current situation.

Mack and Avery just got married and she had a big wedding, with all the thrills and she was hoping for a honeymoon with all the bells and whistles. They were running over their budget so Mack decided they were going to his families beach cottage. Avery had a long list of things planned for their honeymoon.

When they were almost at the cabin they discovered everything would be different from what they planned. Loved Mack and Avery. This book brought me to tears and I can't wait to see what else she writes.

The Beach Cottage by Joanne DeMaio
This book starts out with listing of author's other works.
Love the sketched drawings. Love that this is happening right now, real life to all of us.
Dedication and table of contents listing the chapters then the story.
Very emotional loving story about a couple that get married then learn of the pandemic that surrounds them as they travel to a favorite family beach house for their week long honeymoon.
Love things she finds along the shore and collects but she is also worried about her aging parents and what will happen to them as a couple. Everything she had planned has gotten cancelled so they just have themselves for a whole week...
She fears they got married too soon without learning much about one another. They go through some really fun wild times and some not talking to one another.
He is able to really surprise her with help from the neighbors and I can just picture it in my eyes how beautiful it really would be.
Funny thing is I live close by to Old Lyme, CT and have traveled there, even had friends there and the location is prime.
Not knowing what faces them after a weeks time where they really do get to know one another they head back home...
Love that the love scenes are just lightly spoken about-not explicit details-I Love this!
So many gems/treasures in this book, what a total shock it was to learn the author had put a book out!
Listing of seaside saga and about the author are included at the end along with links of authors website and how to contact her via Facebook.

The Beach Cottage is a surprise novella written by author Joanne DeMaio. It’s a nice short story about a young couple, Mack and Avery, who are headed to Mack’s family beach cottage as an inexpensive honeymoon after having a very elaborate wedding. It just so happens that once they get there the news of the COVID 19 pandemic really starts to take over. With most businesses being shut down for safety, it tends to ruin all of Avery’s honeymoon plans. This really upsets her and puts her in a mood. After a week of being just the two of them, they learn a lot about each other and that sometimes it’s the simple things that really matter. The ending of the story is somewhat sad but I believe the author wrote this to educate her readers that this virus doesn’t care who you are, what age or race, that anyone is capable of catching it and that even though we are taking all the safety precautions, no one is immune. This is the perfect novella to read at this time and I’d like to thank Joanne DeMaio for writing it!

This is such a wonderful story. It puts into words the feelings and emotions many of us have felt during the pandemic. It starts with Avery and Mack getting to Mack’s family beach cottage for their honeymoon. Avery is disappointed when the pandemic shuts down everything and they can’t do their honeymoon activities. They slowly learn how to listen and appreciate the lives they do have. They go back to their home and try to cope with a new lifestyle. It is such a good book and so hard to put down. I hope there is more to come about Avery and Mack. Just a reminder, life can change in an instant.

Over the Rainbow

A love story set in the time of the pandemic. A newlywed couple spend their honeymoon week at a cottage on Long Island Sound, learning about themselves and each other, as they are locked down. (Spoiler alert - there's the debate every couple has early on - what it the proper way to hang the toilet paper roll). As all good things do, their fairytale week came to an end, and they returned to the grim reality of a world in a global healthcare crisis, all the while believing - hoping - that bluebirds really fly over the rainbow 🌈 🐦

What a wonderful surprise to hear Joanne had a unexpected novella that has just been released. I love her stories and couldn't wait to read her new one.

Like all of Joanne's other novels, The Beach Cottage has a wonderful, relaxing setting and warm, memorable characters. Mack and Avery are ready to spend some glorious time at the beach, celebrating their new life—and then everything changes.

As they struggle to find out what is important in life, the reader gets a close up look at the world we are living in now. The Beach Cottage will make you want to stop and think about what is important to you in your world.

What a deep and emotional book from Joanne Demaio. It fits our current times and she writes with real emotion of what so many of us are feeling. A young couple, Avery and Mack, get married just at the beginning of the pandemic. With all the craziness of planning a wedding, they don't pay much attention to what is going on around them in the country. Only once they are on their honeymoon, at a family cottage, do they realize the gravity of the pandemic around them. The two of them not only have to navigate living together and learning about each other, but also the fears and stress of the pandemic. So much of what Avery feels is what I, and I'm sure so many others, are feeling. Sometimes I wondered if Joanne had been reading my thoughts!
The only reason I gave this book 4 stars is that the ending is very emotional and I feel, during these stressful times, that something more uplifting would have been a better end to the book.

This is the first book I've read that is set during this pandemic. A young couple on their honeymoon and the quarantine orders hit. An honest look at how people reacted during that scary time. The author left us hanging so it's on to book two

(spoiler alert) Wasn't expecting this to be about such current events. Wasn't the usual easy read escape I'm used to from DeMaio. Disappointed because I read to escape reality, not read about it.

This was alright!! I picked it up because it was short, and recommended by a patron at the library. I enjoyed the commentary on COVID, but I didn’t really see the point of the story otherwise.

A heart wrenching story of a newlywed couple whose honeymoon and life are turned upside down from the world wide pandemic. As careful as they are, as isolated as they stay one chance encounter may separate them forever.
I was so surprised when one of my favorite authors published this novella that takes place at the beginning of the pandemic when we were all so anxious and didn’t know what the future held. As we learned to adapt to life on lockdown orders, wearing masks, (toilet paper shortages), and the devastation of the deaths of our elderly we had to find ways to deal with this new way of life. I for one did a great deal of reading and tried to escape to places and times that were happier.
I love the way Joanne writes. She has such a wonderful way with words that draws you into the story and you feel like the characters become your friends. I have to admit I always want a happy ending and I didn’t get that in The Beach Cottage but Joanne is the “Queen of Sequels”! I should have known the story didn’t end on that last page of The Beach Cottage. Back to the Beach Cottage opens by letting the suspense of how things turned out hang in the air. Page thirty-nine was my favorite of the book and you’ll have to read it to find out why:) and no cheating, you have to start at page one or it will ruin the surprise for you!
These are quick easy reads and will give you a few hours of escape from our crazy world. It’s Five Seashells (Stars) for these two timely novellas.

THE BEACH COTTAGE
AUTHOR: JOANNE DEMAIO

FIVE STARS

INCREDIBLE! Hats off to Joanne DeMaio for this inspiring story! I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!

Avery and Mack Martinelli are spending their honeymoon at Mack’s cottage on the Connecticut shore. They are looking forward to a week that they have planned carefully; relaxing on the beach, delicious dinners at popular local restaurants, as well as a few other things on their itinerary. Unfortunately, on their first night at the beach while eating dinner, they began to hear rumors that the governor was getting ready to shut down the state due to Covid-19.

They had been so busy with wedding plans, they didn't realize how dangerous the spread of the virus was becoming. Their plans were suddenly cancelled and replaced with fears and uncertainty about the future! For now they are isolated in their own little piece of heaven. Safe, but struggling with what is happening and dealing with lots of questions with no answers.

What will their life look like when they return from the seclusion of the Connecticut shore? How would this pandemic affect their future? Will their parents be safe? What about the security of their jobs?

Joanne hits it out of the park with THE BEACH COTTAGE! She expresses the concerns we all are experiencing living in a world we don't understand!

Thank you!

The Beach Cottage is a wonderful and special novella written by Joanne DeMaio. Again she takes us to the beaches of Long Island Sound, with scenes so descriptive we feel as if we too are breathing in the salt air. It is the story of a newly married couple who are becoming aware of the reality of the pandemic while honeymooning at the cottage. A very touching and emotional story with many surprises. I smiled when realizing a line the bride was reading from a book came from another of DeMaio's novels. At other times I was deeply touched emotionally, especially in the last chapters. It is a perfect book for these unsettling times. Also I am hoping there will be another book to continue Mack and Averys story

This is an emotional book almost from the beginning. A newly married couple’s honeymoon plans are changed when the pandemic starts and many things are closed down. Forced to spend time secluded at his family’s beach cottage, they deal with newlywed emotions and learn a lot about each other. At the same time they have the stress and scariness of the pandemic. This is not Joanne DeMaio’s usual type of book, but I think she captured the emotions of many of us who are struggling through the pandemic. I wasn’t happy with the ending, but I now know there is a sequel to this book. I will definitely read it.

The Beach Cottage was such a lovely book, it touched my heart. It portrayed how love can change, from a blissful moment to one of doubt, when faced with a newly wed couple's marriage facing an unexpected pandemic. Mack and Avery were on their honeymoon staying in a cozy cottage by the sea, with plans that were dashed by the closing of all the places they wanted to visit. Avery's mood sunk, fear set in, and uncertainty about her marriage, as she began to feel isolated even from Mack. The authors beautiful descriptive writing style all create an emotional story that is heart wrenching, yet so filled with the hope we all need and want and is so relevant to the events of today.

Today’s World.

Joann DeMaio has written a timely novella that can perhaps resonate most of us. A newly wedded couple are on their honeymoon when, because of the pandemic, their state is shut down. No longer able to do their many planned excursions and dinners at famous restaurants, they are left to their own devices to find things to do and even more importantly, to find out how much they really know about each other. An interesting read of how two successful individuals handle stress and a epic problem.

Couldn’t put this book down!

What a wonderful story that puts into words what so many of us feel and have felt during this pandemic. It makes you realize the things we take for granted and how valuable family and most importantly love are to us all! As Avery struggled with having her honeymoon not turnout the way she wanted it to - it touches your heart to see her grow and appreciate her life and Mack’s love. This book was hard to put down - I read it in 1 day.

Love in the midst of a pandemic

Max and Avery have a full fun week planned for their honeymoon! Then the lockdown and the fear and all that comes with it. Their honeymoon turns into a time of truly focusing on them and open to the love that they share. But then they have to return home to isolation and empty streets and life of the lockdown. This a beautiful and heart wrenching story.

Present Day

A timely piece of writing from Joanne DeMaio. The author has depicted how the last eight months has affected everyone of us, physically & emotionally. In this scary period we're living in, we all need to appreciate what we have, be present, be safe & live each day the best we can. Express our feelings to those we love while they are here on earth. Tomorrow is not guaranteed.

This novella by Joanne DeMaio introduces you to Avery and Mack Martinelli. They just got married and our spending their honeymoon at his parents’ beach cottage on Hatchett’s Point. While there they have to face the reality of the world today, the pandemic, and figure out what really is important to them. The story brings out many of the same fears we all have right now that life can change in a heartbeat. Very emotional read that leaves you wanting to know what happens with this couple.

So perfect for today’s world!

I sat and read this book and I know exactly how they felt because I think we have all had those exact same feelings and more! The questions that they asked themselves and others, I wonder if you have asked yourself! If this book were written in as little as 10 years ago we would be reading it as a sci-fi instead of a romance! What a fantastic job you did Joanne!

In The Beach Cottage, author Joanne DeMaio transports the reader to Hatchett's Point, a secluded beach in Old Lyme, Connecticut, where newlyweds Mack and Avery Martinelli plan to spend their week-long honeymoon at Mack's family's beach cottage, only to have their plans turned upside down by the Covid-19 pandemic.

After a fairytale wedding with all the bells and whistles, the expensive cost cut into Mack and Avery's honeymoon budget, and Avery didn't envision spending their honeymoon at the beach cottage for seven days, let alone under the stay-at-home orders that were issued when the governor of Connecticut locked down the state due to the pandemic. Avery feels trapped, anxious, and overwhelmed, while Mack is the exact opposite by taking everything in stride. Mack suggests that they take this time to get to learn about each other. The beach cottage is a blessing in disguise, as Mack and Avery take advantage of life slowing down and being in the moment, leaving the world's troubles behind.

In The Beach Cottage, Author Joanne DeMaio easily captivates her readers' attention with this beautifully written novella that captures the reality of the pandemic that Mack and Avery faced, one that we all have been living with since the winter. Through a seamless and flowing storyline, and with a wonderful description of a tranquil beach setting that wraps itself around the reader like a sun-warmed beach towel, the reader follows Mack and Avery as they learn about themselves, and the changes that the pandemic has brought to their new marriage. Mack and Avery easily draw you into their lives with a strong emotional pull, their complexities and flaws are true-to-life, it is easy to relate to them with compassion, empathy, and hope as they struggle to cope with the new normal lifestyle that the pandemic has brought upon them.

I loved reading this compelling and poignant novella. The author realistically described the sign of the times that we've all felt by the changes brought upon us by Covid-19 pandemic. Mack and Avery's story will take the reader on an emotional roller coaster ride where every gamut of emotion is felt, especially the emotional ending, where the reader is left with a reminder that life can change in an instant, yet hoping for the best.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of the book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

One reason I read and have exceeded my goal for 2020 is to escape the covid 19 pandemic. This novella, while well written, is about a newly wed couple, who begins there honeymoon during the pandemic. They are unable to do anything, but stay at the husband's family cottage. The book covers the struggles that they encounter during their sole time together.
