53 Fascinating Facts For Kids for 9-12-year-olds

The coastline of Australia is around 16,000 miles (25,000 km) long and has more than 10,000 beaches. If you visited a new beach every day it would take you 27 years to see every one!

In the center of Australia, a huge mountain of red sandstone towers over the surrounding desert landscape. “Uluru” – also known as “Ayers Rock” – rises to a height of 1,142 feet (348 m) and has a circumference of 5.8 miles (9.4 km). Uluru was formed around 600 million years ago and for thousands of years it has been a sacred place for Australia’s Aborigines.

In the early 20th century, there was a fierce rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne, with both cities wanting to be Australia’s capital. The solution to the problem was to build a completely new city. Work began on the construction of Canberra in 1913, and in 1927 it became the country’s capital city and the new home of the government of Australia.

These are just a few of our fascinating facts about Australia - why not find out more?

We hope that the facts about Australia in our book will fascinate you and encourage you to find out much more about this wonderful and remarkable country.
