New Voyages #2

Time Illusion

Rate this book
Jennifer Li wants her first weeks as spaceship captain to be a success. Getting along with her new crew might be a harder task than she prepared for. The new ship therapist isn't impressed with Jennifer's untested command style, and in the aftermath of facing a murderer together Jennifer and her new second in command might have an intense bond or only an awkward acquaintance.

An emergency call redirects her ship to Rommys to face the double threat of a tear in time-space that threatens its residents, and a mysterious woman that knows more about Jennifer than she's comfortable with. As the time-space anomaly grows, teamwork becomes more important than ever, and if they fail Jennifer could lose more than just the respect of her crew.

A good second follow up sci-fi novella to Four Bodies in Space.

The members of The First Breath of Spring are called to action to rescue the remainder of the citizens on the planet Rommys from an anomaly.

Whilst there is no romance in the book there are mentions of ex’s and I think this may be a very slow burn over the series of a relationship to come.

Whilst this is sci-if and clearly discusses ships, other planets etc. I find these novellas to be more about interesting characters than anything else. Again, as with the first novella I enjoyed Harlow’s use of language and getting to know both Solaris and Li more. I hope there will be a third instalment to the series and that it will be longer.

I received an e-ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

On the heels of "Four Bodies in Space," this sequel takes a step away from a murder mystery of the first book and dives into a strange spacial disturbance, referred to as "the anomaly." In the anomaly, multi-dimensional existences can be seen, or are they just hallucinations? Reminiscent of a kind of Jeff Vandermeer tale, the edges of the anomaly aren't visible, only experienced.

This book is also largely from Captain Jennifer Li's P.O.V., and we learn more of her as she grows closer to her crew. Solaris is also seen softening at the edges with their rescue of a little beast, and they grow nearer to the Captain, as well.

The books in this series are certainly episodic in nature and feel much like a series or podcast I want to binge. The author writes well and conveys the plot elements with clarity and interest. I'll look forward to the next books in the New Voyages series.

This was fun to read. I realized while reading it, that is a series so I was a bit lost. Still I find a way to understand everything and got super curious about the first book; maybe I'll understand this one better.
Great scifi story.
