Not looking forward to the colder weather? Are the shortening daylight hours getting you down? Are you looking for a good book to curl up with on the next gray and rainy day? Look no more!
I had the chance to read an early copy of Runaway Fate, the latest in Elizabeth Hunter’s paranormal women’s fiction genre, and it is an absolute delight. Much like her Glimmer Lake series, this book is a quick, solid mystery (that certainly kept me guessing!), with enough of a supernatural twist to appeal to my love of the paranormal without ever getting too dark or creepy. That’s not to say it’s all sunshine and roses in the quiet university town of Moonstone Cove, not with a rise in strange and unprompted violent acts amongst the students. Is it all a coincidence? Or is there a more sinister power at work? Katherine, Megan and Toni are going to find out…assuming they can figure out how to work together. And how to work their new psychic powers. And maybe not blow their personal lives out of the water in the process.
Fortunately for Dr. Katherine Bassi, this is all still neither as challenging as her doctoral defense, nor as risky as unexpected brunch with strangers. I loved this heroine, with her tendency to spout paragraphs of science when under stress, and her deep desire for coffee at all hours, despite the increased perils of caffeine after noon. I also loved her relationship with Baxter – whose only true flaw is his questionable opinions about psychology as a science (I say with absolutely no college-major-related bias)—and the presence of a clearly happy, healthy, long-term married relationship. (For fans of Elizabeth Hunter’s A Stone Kissed Sea, a side note: you are going to LOVE the return of the science nerd power couple.)
But the very best part of it all? The sequel comes out in two months! Can’t wait for more Moonstone Cove!
