A compelling and spellbinding novelette...

Grimdark: Tales of Exile by Kyle Fox is a compelling and spellbinding spinoff from the Exiles of Eden saga. The threads of storytelling are expertly woven in this sci-fi fantasy that guarantees the attention of the reader. The story had every element a good story should have. A solid plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development.

Grimdark is a quick read. The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling. If you are looking for something different in the sci-fi fantasy genre, this would be an interesting read. Highly recommended and a well-deserved five stars.

If you are interested in intricate plots this is not the book for you. The plot is rather simple. The kingdom has been destroyed by demons and Jacobus, a somewhat tired knight returns to the disaster of the Royal Castle, which is near enough to falling to pieces. He enters and searches, meets demons and . . .
He is the only character if we leave out the supernatural and he doggedly persists. The action is limited in scope, but what makes the book are the descriptions. The world building is extremely good, and the descriptions of it are intensely detailed. Fox obviously has a vivid pictorial imagination and he likes describing in very great detail what he imagines. If you want extremely detailed descriptions of grim, dark places with demons of all sorts lurking, coupled with the hero's tiring persistence and almost refusal to give up, this is the book for you. For descriptive power it is six stars. However, only five are allowed, and since it is somewhat singly focused it loses a star because whatever he is doing in the castle, or why he is going there is rather unclear and it is not obvious he has a reason. So, incredible descriptions, but a little short elsewhere. The good news is it is only a novella, so Fox knows better than to simply drag it on and bore everyone.

Sword and sorcery in the grand old style of the masters of the previous century.

Sword and sorcery in the grand old tradition. Lovers of fantasy from the golden era will enjoy this small volume. In many ways, the writing is reminiscent of Clark Ashton Smith, but the heroes and the action is similar to Robert E. Howard's Conan. I rather enjoyed this book, however, the author seemed to emulate Clark Ashton Smith with his use of archaic words. This may be a bit distasteful for modern readers. I enjoyed the richly described scenes and the action made me feel that I was reading classic sword and sorcery from one of the old magazines of the first golden half of the last century. I would have rated this a full five stars, however, I felt let down when the story ended on a cliffhanger in the middle of a scene. Despite this problem, I enjoyed the colorful world and the rich prose of this small book.

A lone man, Jacobus, wanders a hellish landscape populated by demons and full of death and decay. Along the way, he encounters all sorts of challenges and dark reminders of the world he once called home as a warrior in service to the king.

“Grimdark” is a hard title to tackle, with an initial impression of ‘edge lord’ in delivery with a focus on depravity, gore, and decay. Furthermore, the work feels like it stems from a love of gothic RPG’s with the initial chapters feeling like fan-fiction for a game along the lines of “Dark Souls”. Alternatively, the extreme elements also point to an author perhaps inspired by darker manga such as “Berserk”.

While it is not easy to shake the idea that the book is inspired by other material, perhaps to a fault, the deeper the reader dives into the filthy world of “Grimdark”, the more apparent it becomes that Fox is a talented storyteller.

Notably, the descriptive work of the hellish landscape and monsters that occupy it is chilling, both in detail and imagination. From hills of decayed and town asunder bodies to odd floating jellyfish that slowly devour their victims, the way Fox describes these visions of horror brings the ghastly visions and putrid scents to life.

However, the insane focus on every detail does mean the book lacks in overall substance, as the focus on descriptions eats into the narrative. As such, there are certain moments that begin to feel too overly indulgent in creating imagery over telling a story.

The end result is a difficult read that will only appeal to a certain audience, yet for those who like dark fantasy with horror elements, this is quite a remarkable project that is worth checking out. It will be really exciting to see how Fox progresses as a storyteller, and if his descriptive work can be pushed into a more focused narrative I can see him developing a dedicated fan base of readers – it certainly has that kind of cult appeal.

This being the first part of a two-part series, I am excited to see how the story evolves after the first release ending at such a crucial turning point in the plight of Jacobus.

Thrilling and Dark Fantasy

For lovers of dark fantasy, Grimdark by author Kyle Fox is one book you should add to your collections. The author's vivid painting of the dark world makes this novel an exciting read. The author develops the characters very well manages to keep readers glued to the pages of this well-written novel.
The impressive entry of the main character Jacobus can wow any reader like myself who loves to read dark fantasies featuring a lot of blood and gore. Jacobus is a fallen-knight who was betrayed by his king and was left to fight through the grim darkness to stay alive.
However, Jacobus is not left without hope as he is armed with an ancient mysterious weapon of great power. Jacobus forges his way through the abomination where he is trapped, standing against the forces of darkness and his homeland, which was now under siege.
One thing I love about the author Kyle Fox is his style of storytelling and exceptional ability to vividly paint a fantasy world in ways that bring the images alive. Grimdark is short but makes an interesting read. Fox is one author that never disappoints since his debut novel hit the market.

An absorbing spinoff
Kyle Fox brings us this short story called Grimdark: Tales of Exile. The book is a spinoff from the Exile of Eden saga.
It is short and, most importantly, highly entertaining. In just 49 pages, the author amuses us with a science fiction which is simple to read because of the everyday language and structures that are used to give out the narration.
There is something about the way in which the author describes the feelings that the main characters experience that captivates both my mind and body.
I believe that to get a better understanding of the story you should read Exiles of Eden. Otherwise, some actions and feelings might become incomprehensible.
The tale itself is complete: it’s got a great beginning, with spectacular descriptions of the settings; an unputdownable plot and an unexpected ending and resolutions of the problem.
I am of the opinion that every teenager and science-fiction enthusiastic adult should dedicate 90 minutes or less of their lives to read this story.

Grimdark: Tales of Exile is a short novel which is incredibly exciting! The author of this book, Kyle Fox used his imagination to create a really gripping story combining fantasy and epic ingredients that will keep you at the edge of your seat!

The plot focuses on Jacobus, a knight who fights against the demons and loses. Consequently, he is taken to the land of Grimdark where he becomes a slave and will have to face a terrible fate. He refuses to accept his new destiny and using his skills and talents as a trained warrior, Jacobus escapes from this dark and awful place trying to take revenge for his fallen world and all those who died in the war.

Even though this is a short novel, the content is so unique and engaging that I read it really fast. I enjoyed the vocabulary that the author uses which is very intense making the story authentic and full of original ideas which kept my full attention all the time.

To sum up, this is a fascinating book, full of fantasy and epic moments. I highly recommend it!

Grimdark: Tales of Exile by Kyle Fox is a novelette spin-off of Exiles of Eden. The Tales of Exile series are mixed with dark fantasy, demonic creatures, and unimaginable adventure. Grimdark finds Knight Jacobus returning to his castle that King Korigane ruled, only to see the destruction of the castle and all the people. Evil creatures consuming anything dead, but seeking the living also, are roaming the area. Jacobus carefully makes his way to reclaim the castle and to cast out the wicked. He wonders what his search will find.

As I read the detailed fight Jacobus battles in Grimdark: Tales of Exile, Kyle Fox throws in the sentence, "It was not the wind. And he was not alone". The intensity of this short read will give you the chills as Jacobus realizes there can be a second chance for this destroyed land. Fearing death is the only way a Wingless one points him in the direction chosen for him. Overall, this short read is dark and mesmerizing, paving the way for the next book; Sunlight and Shadow.

Gridmark: Tales of Exile is a short yet compelling dark fantasy novella detailing the adventures of Jacobus in the fallen kingdom of Korigane. With Tolkeinesque descriptions, author Kyle Fox paints a vivid world in which the reader truly feels immersed. His juxtaposition of light and dark imagery is masterful, balancing the grotesque scenes depicted; “Wicked in its ways, deadly in its own decay. Still, the lands were slowly turning. Birch trees were said to be of regeneration and fresh dawns. Of new beginnings, and hope, and better things to come. Yet it seemed everything here had all but come to an end.”
With such detailed and colorful language, it’s easy to stay engrossed in the story and almost be disappointed that it ends so soon. But, having set the reader up for continuing the series, one is eager to discover what new adventures and fate awaits Jacobus in his magical fallen kingdom. A brief yet compelling read, Gridmark: Tales of Exile will not disappoint, and will make a worthy addition to your bookshelf.

Grimdark, Tales of Exile is a dark fantasy novella. I struggled with reviewing this novella because it was intriguing and beautifully written, but at the same time, the language wasn’t very accessible for everyone. If you love dark fantasy and complex imagery, this could be the book for you, but it is definitely not for every audience.
I love a good book with beautiful descriptions and language, but this felt overboard at times. I think my main issue with the word choice is that when I was reading, I felt that some of the descriptions were so long that I lost track of what was actually happening in the moment and I struggled to get back to the story.
Despite some frustration with the language used during some parts of this novella, I think it was a really great read and there were so many small lines within this short book that jumped out at me. We really get to follow the hero of the book throughout his journey and get immersed into the battles along the way in a way that I haven’t seen often.

A short story and a lovely one at that. Though it is a spinoff of the author's desire, it could very well be an extended series on its own. After reading long and exhaustive novels, this short story was a breath of fresh air for me. Since there were not many details and this was a spinoff, there is not much to review about this book uniquely. So here is what little I observed.

Also please read with a free mind as the review will contain no spoilers.

So the plot and the setting were, well, as expected. Since it is a spinoff, you can expect the same grit and atmosphere as from its parent book. And mind you, just because it is a spinoff do not dismiss it, the story and the characters are very well thought off and equally well written.

The story itself was very exciting and lovely to read. I am a lover of everything fantasy be it videogames, movies, or books, so I approached this book with a bias. And I loved it.

With that in mind, I encourage you to read this book and the parent book also and show the author some love and support.

Regards
Happy Reading

Since I have read and liked “Exiles of Eden: The Demonic Dodecahedron” very much, I decided to read this spin-off and it did not disappoint me. Although “Grimdark: Tales of Exile” is a short novel, author Kyle Fox could certainly keep his imaginative storytelling and continued this wonderful world building.

This is an epic dark fantasy novel and its main character is Jacobus, a fallen-knight who lost everything to the demonic siege. Readers are invited to join him in a journey through the hellish abominations of his devastated homeland.

Beyond its length, this novel is really a fast reading due to the unique and engaging plot. It becomes more interesting and gripping with every turn of page. Moreover, at the end, the book has a Bestiarum Vocabulum in order to make some topics clearer.

To sum up, this is an action-packed and fascinating short book that all fantasy readers will surely love

Jacobus is a fallen knight who fought bravely against the invading demon horde, but ultimately failed and was captured. Not, he is being taken to the land of Grimdark, where he will be expected to labor as a slave and be tortured, until he finally perishes. Jacobus is not broken, and he will fight his new masters until he is free. Using a once in a lifetime opportunity, when he is given an ancient artifact, Jacobus starts to fight in earnest against the demons and he seeks his ultimate return to his homeland.
This book was a full-length novel distilled into a novella frame. With that, certain shortcomings were to be expected, however, the author was able to still bring a well thought out story, a well fleshed out plot and a great deal of action scenes in a coherent manner. I was not expecting the cliffhanger at the end, so that was a disappointment, but other than that this was a very well written book.

This science-fiction short story by Kyle Fox tells the story of Jacobus, a fallen knight who was sold into slavery by his own kingdom. Despite his struggles, he is gifted an artifact by the Wingless of the White-Blood which will give him incredible powers. With it, he breaks away from his current situation while trying to save his home from evil.

While a science-fiction story, it’s a great read for anyone on the search for something unique. Fox writes with a great style that includes stunning imagery. There are also plenty of intriguing characters that add their own touch to this captivating story.

Keep in mind that this book is a spinoff of the author’s Exile of Eden saga. Because of this, it might be ideal to read this selection first so you get a better understanding of what’s going on.

At only 49 pages, it won’t take much time to read, making it perfect for those who want a story that’s quick yet fulfilling.

I’m sticking with my 5 stars, but want to be very clear this won’t be for everybody. At 53 pages, it’s a short read that feels very much to me like an origin story.
The erudite vernacular is actually a bonus in this story. Usually, I’d ding a couple of stars for that many $5.00 words, but in this case it was actually part of the tapestry of the world the author was creating. Plain and Simple just would not have worked to paint the picture the author was working toward.
The protagonist’s climb from the depth of the moat to the throne room is obviously a metaphor for his spiritual journey. This is complex imagery that requires some work from the reader. If you’re looking to be spoon fed a plot, keep on looking. This isn’t the book for you. If you like well thought out fantasy that requires investing in, this is likely the door to a series you will love.
A must read for fans of complex fantasy.

I find this fantasy book is epic. Grimdark: Tales of Exile by Kyle Fox is a story that centers around Jacobus, the last surviving warrior of Korigane who is also known as a fallen knight from a fallen kingdom. Courageous enough to fight against a demon horde, he unfortunately ended up being captured and becoming a slave in Grimdark. But he is very determined to free himself. Using a hermetic artifact, he will fight his way into freedom.

I love the storyline and the concept of this book. It can be categorized as a dark fantasy because of its theme that deals with supernatural fictional characters such as demons. It was written in an amazing way. The author was able to deliver such a good narration. The world building was rich and I can imagine how the setting looks like. There was a huge surprise in the end and I thought that was clever. I am looking forward to reading more books from this author!

Grimdark is a fantasy action short story with poetic vocabulary and very descriptive imagery. Readers follow Jacobus, the last warrior in the fallen kingdom of Korigane. It's a dark fantasy with gruesome battles as he travels throughout the war-torn land. My only criticism is that the battle's importance seems weighty for this one warrior. I wish there were more characters, someone for Jacobus to team up with. But perhaps that comes later in the series? There are other beings he comes across: ghouls, unseen beings, angels and demons - it's all part of the treacherous world of Korigane. I don't think this book is for everyone; but if you enjoy battles and fantasy you will probably like it. I'm giving it a 4/5 stars because of the vocabulary and storytelling, although I wasn't a huge fan of the actual story.

“Grimdark: Tales from the exiled” written by Kyle Fox is a fascinating novelette that is very short and can be read in a single sitting; it has got less than fifty pages.
The narrative is very good and I noticed that the author used more telling than showing with dialogues, something that I liked because readers can make a better mental picture of what is happening. Although the reading is short, it does not lack descriptions, which make the story even better.
The plot was carefully thought about and characters are well developed, as well as the story itself. I strongly recommend reading this book because it is an enjoyable read, perfect for reading during an afternoon, and for those who do not tend to read long books.

Darkly Epic

This short story is true to its name. We are on a grim journey with Jacobus, once a knight but now a prisoner to the creatures that have overtaken the area. At times intense and always dark, Fox does a very excellent job at describing the surroundings and/or the actions of Jacobus as well as the other characters. As I read, I could almost smell the stench Fox writes about, or see the gory scene that was laid before Jacobus. The short story enthralled me. IT kept me hooked on every word as I felt the need that Jacobus felt to do something about his situation. I would like to continue the series and see where it leads. I would recommend this book to a slightly more mature reader simply because it is so dark.

Grimdark is the first book of the Tales of the Exiles series. I must admit I felt curious because of its cover. I am fond of apocalyptic stories and this one has definitely matched my expectations. Set in a kingdom described as being worse than Hell, the main protagonist, Jacobus, goes through dangerous, dark and sinister experiences where darkness prevails. Mystery, suspense and action cover the pages of this must-read novelette. Caught by the many unexpected twists, I couldn’t put it down until I found out whether evil has won or not. Apart from this intriguing plot, I really enjoyed the detailed descriptions of the settings and the characters. Author Kyle Fox made this grim world come to life with his accurate words. Highly recommended!

“Grimdark: Tales of Exile” is a fantasy novel written by Kyle Fox. I really enjoyed this work. I love fantasy and I always feel amazed at the authors’ ability to create these imaginative tales. This one in particular is a perfect book to read in one sitting. On the one hand, because it is short, it has about 60 pages. On the other hand, because it is fascinating and it hooks the reader from the first page. It follows Jacobus and his challenging journey through a devastated land where he will have to face evil.
In this original, imaginative and absorbing book, the author has built, through powerful and detailed descriptions, a chaotic world of blood, fantasy, and horror. I really liked this story and I highly recommend it.

A short and powerful story.

Grimdark: Tales of Exile is written by Kyle Fox and it is a short and exciting dark fantasy story. Even though the writer uses some complicated language, it helps our imagination. It was a bit difficult for me to read, but I was engaged from beginning to end. The book is full of awful betrayals, threatening battles, one last knight and a mysterious artifice, which will guide us through this tale. I really liked descriptions of places, characters and events.

I don’t believe it is the best book to initiate this amazing kind of genre, but for those who love it, it is perfect to add to their collection. It is the exact meld of brevity and intensity, without forgetting its horrifying nature.

Fallen at the claws of the demonic creatures, all that remains of a once-mighty kingdom are ruins and scars as far as the horizon stretches. Betrayed by the king, the Knight has to flare up from slavery to avenge the death of the fallen. The path that he chose to walk repletes with blood, gore, pain, and unparalleled darkness. Accompanied by his mystical sword of immense ancient power, Jacobus marks his way through hellish supernaturals to attain his long-forgotten freedom.

The author vividly pictures the intricate details of the book in words. The book is authentic and appealing with the dark fantasy theme. As a fantasy reader, I loved every trivial detail, from the word of choice of the author, excellent world-building to the dark plot with a valiant protagonist.

What a great cover this book has! it caught my attention at first sight and after reading the description, even more. This is a spinoff from The exiles of Eden Saga. This time, it is the story of a fallen knight’s path into the darkness.
The story is great; it has it all and I enjoyed it from beginning to end. This is an epic fantasy that caught me reading at the edge of my seat and that surprised me with many twists and turns, almost at every turn of the page, something that is great for readers.
The author did an outstanding job. This is a book that I recommend reading for sure. Well deserved five stars go for this powerful novelette.

“Grimdark: Tales of Exile” by Kyle Fox is a highly well-rounded and intricately written fantasy book. That alone should engage you enough to want to give this book a shot, but I’ll go on and say that this plotline is one that will grip you tight and keep you guessing right up until the very end. The only downside I can say is that the story just wasn’t long enough. Thank the gods the author went on to continue his brilliance in another novella, but I really think this could have been extended into a full-on novel. It is insanely well-written and a book that you plain and simply won’t want to put down.

“Grimdark: Tales of Exile” by Kyle Fox takes the reader into the imaginative and dangerous world of Grimdark, where Jacobus, our hero, is now enslaved. Once a knight of renown, he failed to win his battle against demons and his punishment is to be sent to Grimdark and face a fate worse than death. Throughout this short novella, Jacobus makes up for his defeat by destroying all the monsters attempting to enslave or kill him. Although he couldn’t save his world, he can do his best to avenge it, and he, along with a mysterious artifact, head back to his old castle to reclaim it and make amends for his failure.

“Grimdark: Tales of Exile” is a spinoff novellete of Kyle Fox’s Exiles of Eden. Having read Exile of Eden before this one, I can honestly say that it is equally intense and still quite epic albeit comparatively short. If anything, I felt a profound appreciation for the author’s range of writing skill shown across the two books I have read so far. It must have taken quite an effort to pack such immense detail in 49 pages. It helps that the cover looks pretty legendary too. Other than being a good, quick read, it’s a plus that this one can be enjoyed even without reading the Exiles of Eden series.

Grimdark is one of the fiction books from Exiles of Eden saga; written by Kyle Fox. This is an easy to read book and quite entertaining, without a doubt. I would recommend it to people who use to read plots which are a bit dark and have invented creatures. It is a fantasy novel that tells the story of Jacobus, the main character, after his latest defeat. He has been slaved and fights back to achieve his freedom. I really enjoyed reading the way Jacobus uses his skills to win his battle in different stages. It was not difficult to get into this epic story, because the characters are original, flashy and well described. However, I would like the same originality in the plot.

"Grimdark: Tales of Exile" is a fantasy book written by Kyle Fox, in which the author tells the story of Jacobus, the last surviving warrior of Korigane. The kingdom of Korigane no longer exists and now Jacobus is captured and thrown into the shackles of slavery.
Author Fox, in my opinion, knew how to create a fantastic world like no other, where mystery is the main protagonist of this novel. Likewise, the world building is fascinating and the plot is super captivating.
I think the cover is perfect for the book as it perfectly exemplifies the plot of it. I definitely recommend this compelling story.

A friend of mine recommended me this great fantasy story and I was really excited when I finally got to read it.
Grimdark: Tales of Exile by American author Kyle Fox is one of those books that grabs our attention from the very first page and we almost wish it would never end.
The world building is absolutely fantastic. I could tell Fox had put a lot of effort into the writing of this captivating story.
I think most of the various characters are interesting, but the main character is beyond amazing.
Inreally enjoyed reading this book and I will definitely be reading more from this author in the future!
