This is a Women's Fiction with a bit of suspense put into it. I have to say this book took me forever it get into it, and that is because the flash backs of the past I feel was done wrong. The flash backs was not done where you do it was a flash back, and it took me a little bit to figure out what was happening. I think that took away for the book. The suspense part was good. I enjoyed the characters after I figured out what was happening. Overall, I liked the book. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Sourcebooks Casablanca) or author (Debbie Burns) via NetGalley, so I can give honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

This story is filled with with excellently written and well-developed characters. The two main characters Josie Winterhill and Carter O'Brien meet and are instantly attracted to each other. Josie's background doesn't lend her to believe in Happily Ever After much. Plus she's in hiding and her first priority is her daughter Zoe. Carter's ex-fiancee cheated on him and that was the end of their relationship. So both characters have past issues to deal with. I enjoyed their journey to happiness as they slowly overcame the things holding them back. This was a very entertaining read.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Josie Waterhill fled a past filled with violence, and made a safe life for herself and Zoe, her six year old daughter. Zoe is an extremely bright child who loves animals. They have a home with Myra Moore, a sweet, elderly woman who hosts tea parties in her lovely backyard gardens with the help of Josie’s capable hands. Then, freelance journalist, Carter O’Brien comes to town researching a missing person and an old murder, and Myra’s memories could help him. Josie’s afraid he’ll find out about her past.

Through vivid flashbacks, reader’s learn of Josie’s traumatic childhood. The story unleashes some strong emotions when the past catches up with Josie. If Josie is to have a future with Carter and Zoe, she must confront the past. Author Debbie Burns writing voice is strong and sure, and the story is moving. The plot contains surprising twists and turns and provides a happy ending. Several rescue animals are supporting characters.

Josie Waterhill is a single mother of six year old Zoe, she fled from her violent past five years ago and she’s made a new life in Galena in Illinois. Her eighty year old friend Myra Moore lives in her family’s civil war era home and with Josie’s help she runs a successful tea house.

Carter O’Brien is a journalist, he’s looking into a missing person case and suspected murder. His grandfather Myron O’Brien left his wife during the great depression, disappeared and was never seen again. His research has led him to Galena, Myra might have some information to help solve the mystery of what happened to his grandfather and he decides to stay at the tea house. Josie can’t help but notice how handsome Carter is, he’s single, and Zoe and animals are drawn to him. Josie’s worried about Carter using his skills as a journalist and will discover the truth about her troubled past.

Josie had a very difficult childhood, with the arrival of Carter, is it time for Josie to face her past to be able to move on with her life and for Carter be part of her and Zoe’s future?

Summer by the River is a story set in a small town, with some added mystery and romance to make it an interesting read. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, I didn't like the amount of violence included in book and three stars from me. https://karrenreadsbooks.blogspot.com/

Burns is a new author for me and she turned out a good book. Set in a Galena, IL, Josie is hiding from the world. Readers are slowly able to piece together her story as the chapters unfold. The beginning was a little slow, but the momentum picked up the more I delved into the book. My favorite character was Myra. I did think Josie’s actions were a little out of character when she does something toward the end of the book. I know it was necessary for the story line, but it just didn’t fit, in my opinion, especially given her protectiveness over Zoe. All in all. It’s a decent story. Thanks to Edelweiss, NetGalley, and Sourcebooks Casablanca for the early read.

I can’t remember when I have read a more beautifully written story than Summer By The River. Every word on every page is like a beautiful brush stroke capturing the scene and the characters perfectly for the reader to be completely immersed in the story. Summer By The River is a captivating story of characters brought together by chance but find they have a connection through their mixed up, often miss stepped pasts. Set in Galena Illinois, a town with as rich of a history as each character in the story, the story takes place within a Victorian Tea House that provides both the perfect setting and the ideal launching point for each character to share their story through snippets of memories and events. Josie, Myra, and Carter may be the three main characters but through their memories and stories we get to meet and experience a rich and interesting list of characters and settings from L.A. to New York and everywhere along the way.

A contemporary story with a rich historical feel that is not to be missed!

This book is part romance, part mystery, part suspense, and all fabulous! Josie gives away no details of her past, although there’s always a shadow hanging over her head about it catching up with her. Carter happens to arrive in her home, looking for answers to his own past. Together they find a connection, chemistry, and eventually trust and love. I found this to be a many layered, captivating read, and I highly recommend it!

I enjoy reading books written by Debbie Burns. This book does not disappoint. Josie is a single mom who moved to Galena, Illinois to escape from her old life. She moves into the tea house with her daughter Zoe. Myra is the owner and takes Josie under her wing. Carter comes to the tea house to find out what happened to his grandfather and his research takes him to Galena. This book has romance, a bit of mystery and of course furry animals. I enjoyed reading this story. Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Casablanca for the E-ARC. This is my own opinion.

Summer by the River easily captured my imagination as we are invited into the world that Josie has created for herself out of chaos and fear. Told in some places through flashback, Josie’s backstory is one of danger and secrets she’s kept, secrets that will steal her sense of safety, with the need to keep on the move trusting no one for long. When she arrives in Galena, Illinois she’s just about out of energy to go any further with her young daughter, Zoe. Thankfully, she’ll find a refuge and a helpful friend in Myra. Settling down in Galena, helping Myra with her tea parties in her beautiful home and garden seems a safe thing to do, for now. But that’s about to change with the arrival of Carter, who has issues of his own.

Carter is a journalist searching for answers to a family mystery of years gone by and hopes that Myra can shed some light on his grandfather’s disappearance so many years ago. As Carter arrives with his lovable dog, animal lover Zoe is immediately in love with Carter’s rescue dog – Mom, well, she’s far more cautious for she cannot trust that this man will not oust her secrets and while answering his own questions.

Summer by the River is a discovery journey for all the people involved in so many ways. It’s also a story that doesn’t fit into just one genre for you’ll find touches of mystery, suspense, romance, and women’s fiction within these pages artfully blended into a look into a world filled with secrets that are about to be revealed. No spoilers, but I did enjoy my time in this world with characters who felt realistic for the situations they were in. Touches of humor, danger, and hope were woven throughout giving the feeling of stepping into the lives of these characters and hoping for a well-deserved happy ending for them all.

*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher, Sourcebooks Casablanca via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*

Thank you NetGalley, Debbie Burns and SOURCEBOOKS Casablanca for the ARC of Summer by the River. This is my personal review.
Josie decided she wanted to start her life over with her daughter, Zoe and she moves them to Galena Illinois. When they got there Myra who owns a mansion invites them to stay there with her.
Josie is settling in until Myra invites a writer to stay with them also. He is in search for answers to missing person and murder that happened in the area.
Josie is hiding her past, but she knows it with Carter there he could dig into her past and find out.
The book has a bit of everything in mystery, suspense, romance and hidden secrets.
I enjoyed the book but did not feel the chemistry between Josie and Carter.

Summer by the River by Debbie Burns is a standalone novel. I have read a number of books by Debbie Burns, but Summer by the River was totally different, and I loved every moment. Very well done.

Josie Waterhill, our heroine, lives in a midwestern (Galena, Ill) town with her 6-year-old daughter, Zoe. Josie, who arrived 5 years before totally broke and, on the run, but had the fortune of meeting Myra, who owned a mansion, and offered her a job. Now all these years later, Josie runs the historic tea house that she helped build for Myra, who is getting up in age. Josie is happy with her life, especially loving her daughter Zoe, and Myra; until she meets a journalist, who makes her nervous.

Carter O’Brien, our hero, is a journalist, who comes to Galena to interview Myra, in helping him find information from many years ago about his grandfather & and their possible history. Myra is thrilled to be able to investigate the past and work with Carter, offering him to stay a lot longer to write the story. But Josie, having run from a violent life as a young girl, wants nothing to do with him, even if they both begin to feel an attraction to each other. Josie also worries about Zoe, who is becoming too attached to Carter, as a father figure.

What follows is a wonderful story that has romance, mystery, suspense, intrigue, as we learn more about the past memories of Josie, Myrna and Carter’s fact-finding information. I loved the addition of thecute dogs and a cat, especially Buttercup, who was a big rescue dog, as well as Myrna’s long time dog, Tidbit; later on there will be a cute rescue cat. Though they were the backdrop of the story, it was fun, as well as Zoe’s antics.

As we reach the last third of the book, Carter and Josie allow themselves to act on their feelings, but she is afraid he will eventually leave them; especially since she is still not comfortable about revealing her past life. Myrna knows everything, but Carter needs to find out for himself. Which he does, and the past comes flooding back. What will Carter find? Is Josie’s life in danger?

Summer by the River was so well written by Debbie Burns, with a couple we wanted to root for, a friend so great like Myrna, the fun times with Zoe and the dogs, as well as learning all about Josie’s life years before. It was such great story that kept my attention from start to finish. Summer by the River was a story of family, love and trust, as well as a captivating read. I suggest you read this wonderful book.

Josie Waterhill and her six-year-old daughter, Zoe have fled LA and ended up in a cozy Midwestern town right on the river. Josie can raise Zoe away from the violence of the life she once knew, and make a new home in the historic tea house where they’ve been invited to stay. Josie's elderly landlord, Myra has grown to love them and treat them like family. Josie finally feels safe and Zoe had begun school when a stranger shows up at the Tea Room. Myra welcomes him and allows him to say while he is searching for his past. Carter O’Brien is a journalist, so his curiosity and research skills can put Josie in danger. Shortly after he arrives, he and Josie find a Bernese Mountain Dog that has been injured and dumped, and they rescue him. When he is brought to the house, Zoe names him Buttercup and instantly falls in love. Zoe is also looking for one thing to make her life complete, a father and in her eyes, Carter is perfect. As Carter’s interest in Josie deepens, he inadvertently stirs up trouble when he uncovers things that Josie has kept hidden. Ready or not, Josie has to face her painful past so she can create a new future for herself and Zoe.

I have read many of Debbie Burns Rescue Me series, all stories centered around rescue dogs, so I was not surprised to see a rescue show up in this book. I loved the main characters in this story. Josie is a great mom and friend. She spends time with Zoe and gives her everything she needs, except a father. She is also so great with Myrna, doing whatever she can to help with the Tea Room and the guests when they open their home as a Bed & Breakfast. The story has a lot of secrets as well. Josie's past is shared through flashback chapters and she is definitely a strong person. As we learn more about what she has lived through, my heart broke for her. I love how Myrna has helped her and kept her secrets. As we learn more about her past, her future begins to look brighter and her present finds her moving forward to make things right. I have to say, I loved Zoe. She is only 6, but is adorable. She is a bit precocious, but that only makes me love her more. This is a story about family, love, protecting those you care about, new beginnings and the need to stop hiding. I really liked this story and recommend it to those who like romance, and women's fiction. The audiobook was narrated by Laura Jennings and I felt she did a great job giving voice to the various characters who are different ages and genders. She added tension and emotion to the story to make it an enjoyable listening experience.

On sale now for $1.99.
We begin this book with Josie drying blueberries in the oven and we meet her six- year-old daughter, Zoe. The next thing we know, Josie is passing out and Carter is there to catch her. Myra comes in just in time.
Carter, a journalist shows up looking for more information regarding his grandfather. We quickly find out that Josie and Zoe have forged papers from Chicago- DRAMA, SCANDAL. …. OOH this started out with a bang! Josie goes into a panic thinking that Carter is there to investigate her. Carter divulges his grandfather’s name- Myron O’Brien, interesting that the homeowner’s name is Myra, hmmmm..things are getting interesting. Apparently, Myron was a carpenter that worked at the house eighty years ago. The place is such a nice B&B with homemade cookies and wine delivered at night. I need to find this place and hook up with this treatment!
We are then taken back to Josie and her past and what formed her as a person. We are then lead on an adventure with Zoe starting school for the first time, a mystery uncovered, a past unraveled and maybe a romance?
This was such a great book! I cannot wait for her next book!

Josie Waterfield emerges as an incredibly captivating heroine in Summer by the River by Debbie Burns. Her character is a tapestry woven with a huge heart, unwavering strength, and a deep understanding of her roots. Yet, beneath it all, she aspires for a brighter future, especially for her beloved daughter, Zoey. However, the looming specter of Josie’s hidden secret threatens to upend their lives once more, forcing them into the shadows.

Carter O’Brian, a tenacious journalist drawn to the quaint town of Odessa in pursuit of answers about his family’s enigmatic past. What transpires in Odessa exceeds his expectations, as Carter effortlessly charmed his way into my heart from the very beginning. His unrelenting quest to unravel the mysteries that haunt him and his family resonates deeply.

The tantalizing question remains: What is Josie concealing? Be prepared with a box of tissues, for the intricate plot of Summer by the River by Debbie Burns will tug at your heartstrings. Debbie Burns skillfully interweaves Josie’s past through compelling flashbacks, seamlessly blending it with the unfolding narrative of her life. This masterful storytelling technique ensured my profound connection with all the characters in this captivating tale as the enthralling story unfolds.

Another winner by Debbie Burns!

Josie Pictures has grown up rough in LA. Her mother was an alcoholic more concerned about her next movie role, man and drink, not necessarily in any order, than she was about her children, Josie and Sam. Josie pretty much was the head of household by 8 years old, responsible for her younger brother Sam.

Josie's life gets more difficult as the years go on, and she is forced to run for her life. She eventually winds up in Galena, a small river-side town in the Midwest, out of energy, money and the ability to go any further. Luckily, she is befriended by a local businesswoman, Myra, who takes her home and she never ends up leaving. Over the next few years, Josie and her daughter Zoe live a nice life with Myra, helping to run her tea garden business.

Carter comes to town because Myra wants to research and document an event from her past, and the sparks begin to fly between Josie and Carter. Josie is torn between her developing feelings and her need to protect herself from her own past. I don't do spoilers, but please read this book and follow Josie and Carter's story, and meet a cast of characters and animals as well.

Thanks go to the publisher and Net-Galley for the electronic copy of Summer by the River by Debbie Burns. I voluntarily agreed to read and review this heartfelt story. My opinions are my own, and nothing has influenced them.

Summer by the River is quite different the other books I’ve read by Ms. Burns. The pacing pulled me in from the first page and kept my attention to the last. This amazing novel had a great deal of substances and plenty of deep emotion.

Josie Waterhill is an endearing heroine with plenty of depth to her character. Her protective nature comes through from the start. Her care for her adorable daughter Zoe and her elderly landlord and friend touched me deeply.

Carter O’Brien is an amazing hero. I loved his patience with Josie and his deep affection for Zoe. He has all the characteristics I love most in a male leading character. He uses such a gentle approach in getting Josie to open up to him.

The romance between Josie and Carter is strong from the beginning. I thoroughly enjoyed the love that develops between them. He’s keenly aware that Josie is a package deal, and his love for Zoe is easily seen early on. The love scenes are not graphic and very well done, and I really wanted them to find their happy ending.

If you enjoy novels with plenty of depth to the characters and a plot with substance beyond the usual romance, then you will love Summer by the River as much as I did. Ms. Burns has fast become an auto-buy author for me. I don’t see that another book is planned, but I hope she writes Sam’s story. I’m sure it would be outstanding. Happy reading!

This book was such an unexpected surprise of a romance. There was a good amount of mystery for both main characters but Josie's really swept me away. I was trying to guess at the missing details of her whole story all the way up until it was truly revealed. With each new revelation I was surprised and excited to keep reading. One of my favorite characters was Zoe who was an extremely well written 6 year old. I think that sometimes authors find it difficult to create a three dimensional character for a child but this was extremely successful!

The chapters were mostly told in the present with a few sprinkled in from Josie's past to help give context and add to the mystery. I loved how the author braided the present and the past and showcased how in both settings good people can be found willing to help one another. For a while I wasn't sure which way this romance was going because although I new who the characters were in Josie's present, I was also completely drawn into her past and the love story it told. The level of emotional heartbreak and agony the author created on the page was riveting and the total sweetness of the happy ever after was so perfect. There were so many bright spots throughout the story that it is hard to put into words without spoiling the story.

I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Summer by the River is a bit different than what I expected. It’s categorized on NetGalley as romance, but I found the book more of a small-town women’s fiction with romantic and mystery elements.

The part that appealed to me the most was the mystery, what with a missing person and suspected murder during the Great Depression, and how that leads Carter to investigate the town and what happened to his grandfather. I also really liked the animals, like his lovely rescue dog, although I was a bit disappointed to find that the dog wasn’t as big a role as I thought.

The other characters, like Josie and Myra, were marginally interesting, but I wasn’t super invested in them. And what romance there was felt really underdone, so I just wasn’t interested and didn’t feel like they had chemistry.

I didn’t enjoy this one as much as I hoped, but I think there’s a lot to enjoy if you go in with the proper expectations and are prepared for the multifaceted story, I think you might like it a bit more.

After reading the blurb, I was intrigued about Josie's story. This was a new-to-me author so I didn't know what to expect from the story and/or characters.

Josie and Carter's story was sweet with a bit of mystery and suspense thrown into the mix. Although the story started slow, I was still intrigued by Josie's story and was glad to discover her past and everything that it entailed. There were some moments when the story definitely dragged, especially in regards to the mystery Carter was investigating, but the author made a great effort of keeping things interesting and tying everything together in the end.

I wish I could have gotten a little more insight into Carter himself instead of all the mystery behind his family's past. What was brought to the page was good, but it seemed like the story focused more on Josie's past and how it shaped her. As for the romance, although it was slow to come, it read a little bit insta love-ish for me. I would've liked to see more of a connection between Josie and Carter. Sure, the attraction was there, but I think their connection was lost in the shuffle amongst the mystery and the flashbacks.

Josie Waterhill and daughter Zoe are making a new life in a small Midwestern town.
They have gotten away from the violence of the life they left behind.
Josie has found a home at the victorian style house/teahouse with Myra, the elderly owner.
One day a journalist, Carter O'Brien shows up looking into his family history.
He is there to find his own connections and possibly long lost stories. He is from New York and possibly looking for a change.
Josie is determined to keep her past in the past and not reveal secrets.
Which makes it hard for Carter to get to know her.
Each one is trying to create a better future for themselves and not quite sure which direction to go.
Honestly, this is a good story but I had a hard time with the constant fear from Josie for her and her daughter. I can understand it but it is so constant it is like an extra character in the story.
I kept thinking just confront the past and get on with it, you now have several people backing you up..isn't that enough help? Anyway, somehow that spoiled it for me.

Josie Pictures and her brother Sam had a dysfunctional childhood and now Sam is gone. As Josie Waterhill, she and her six-year-old daughter, Zoe are living in Galena, Illinois. Working and living at the tea house is a much-needed escape from her past and a new life for them. Her employer and friend Myra, invites Carter O’Brien, a journalist, to stay at the house while he investigates the long-ago death of his grandfather, Myron. As secrets are revealed, Josie worries that she and Zoe are becoming too attached to Carter. Josie and Carter finally act on their attraction, but she can’t get further involved as there is no guarantee that her past has been left behind. As Josie and Carter become closer, he brings some welcome closure to her past, but can Josie finally be confident that she and Zoe will be safe? "The thing is, it's probably best to remember you're here for Myra I don't make friends easily. And I honestly don't want to. I like my life that way."

Josie made her position clear to Carter. Carter was here to delve into his family's history with the Tea Garden's owner, Myra. Josie was not going to get involved. With the story or with Carter. Josie has a history that she does not want found out. Having a writer around makes her nervous.

Carter came for some answers about his grandfather. What he found is so much more. Things are definitely complicated. Little does he know how complicated things are about to get.

I LOVED this story. It wasn't what I expected, in a good way. There is a sweet story between Carter and Josie, but the flashbacks to Josie's past made it so much more than a "sweet" story. I loved the entire book!

Summer by the River by Debbie Burns is a feel-good story about Josie Waterhill, a single mother and her six-year-old daughter, Zoe who escape LA and the violence Josie grew up around. They end up in a quaint Midwestern town where they meet Myra Moore, owner of a historic tea house who invites them to stay. For five years, Josie has felt safe from her past until Myra invites a journalist to visit and encourages him to stay. However, Carter O’Brien is researching a missing person. Has he discovered the truth and the secrets she carries with her? As their relationship develops, can Josie learn to trust and let go of the past to embrace a future with Carter? Debbie Burns does it again with a heart-warming story of family and trust. Throw a rescue dog into the mix and you have a fun story that is worth the read.

I was expecting this book to be a quick read and a normal romance book - but it’s so much better than that! It is indeed a quick read despite its somewhat long length, but it’s definitely not a typical romance book. It almost crosses over into some other genres with the content at some points, and it’s absolutely got a much more satisfying outcome than others considering those extra elements to the story, although it does still have the normal happy ending you see in romances. It’s probably one of the sweetest romance books I’ve ever read, with excellent characters and a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat hoping things will turn out well. I’m really in love with it, and will be keeping it on my shelf for quite some time to remind me of the great time I had reading it! I would absolutely recommend it.
Note: I received this book for free through Goodreads Giveaways.
