Excited to Read Book 2

I loved the descriptions of the world and creatures. The cast of characters was so rich and lovely. And don't even get me started on the epic battle scenes... giant spiders, zombies, sorcery... just wow. I'll be reading on for sure.

Beautiful ♡ sometimes it gets dark. Definitely be warned if you're triggered by reference to self harm or attempted suicide. But for me, this book reached right into my heart and dug it's fingers into all the meaty bits... and I mean that in the best possible way.

Disclaimer - I was given a copy of this in exchange for a review, but I hope to think I'm still innately rude and blunt enough to give it an honest appraisal...

And that appraisal would be, it's a lot of fun, once it gets going, but that "getting going" part is my main criticism. The opening chunk of the book nearly lost me, as the three main characters are introduced with little explanation or reason, and you're dropped into ongoing action scenes with no familiarity with these people or why you should care about them. It takes a while for the initial story of each of the three characters to be told, and really only begins once they've crossed paths and become a team.

From there on, however, it's great fun in a very D&D/sword&sorcery sort of way. I know the author is a fan of Fafhrd & the Grey Mouser and it shows in the swashbuckling style of the story, as the heroes plunge ahead through various increasingly mad encounters and scrapes. Ultimately it becomes a story about three broken people from our world finding their courage in a fantasy place, and it's really quite endearing by the end, with a closing that happily finishes the story while leaving all sorts of intriguing avenues open for further exploration.

Let's just dive into what I love most about this book, which is the characters! I Love (yes capital L) the characters and how well they develop throughout the book. You feel a connection with each of the main characters, of course, however what Travis does so flawlessly where other authors struggle is to not only make you care about the main characters but the secondary ones as well.

The world building in the novel is also on point. You feel immersed in the land described, both wanting to travel there to see it for yourself and not wanting to go cause well, fighting evil isn't exactly the safest. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series to see what else has in store for our group of reluctant heros and personally, I can't wait to see what other smart-mouth remark comes out of the Kid's mouth :P

The imagery, the characters, the storyline. I couldn't have asked for more. As someone who struggles to read a full length novel due to being Dyslexic, I found this to be such a pleasant and easy read. I can't recommend this book enough, and I can't wait to get my hands on Book 2.
