Scott's friend, Craig Fellows, is also one of the 144,000 Chosen men told the date he will die. On his date, Craig is visited by a Watcher, a member of a religious group self-elected to ensure the dates of the Chosen are monitored and adhered to.
In order to stop this rogue Watcher killing his friend, Scott must confront him before it's too late.
Read The Rogue Watcher, the prequel novella to the science fiction dystopian collection: Humanity Series, and enter a deterministic world devoid of free will, reason, and maybe one day, humanity itself.
Seth Rain lives in the Black Country, in the UK, waking far too early in the morning to write dystopian science fiction novels. Having studied English and Philosophy at University, he went on to attain a Master of Arts in English Literature. He has been a fan of dystopian and science fiction stories for some time and is now embarking on writing a series of novels of his own.
When he's not writing, Seth teaches English to 11-18 year olds. And when he's not writing, or teaching children, he spends time with his own two teenage children, his girlfriend, films, music and above all, books.
'He worked through it all in his head: how he'd ended up there, in that spot, at that time, all of it planned, unavoidable. It felt as though he was choosing, that be was in control, but he wasn't.'
Glad I picked up this shirt story after reading the first in the series. It felt like the right time to do so.
It goes back to when Scott found out he was one of the Chosen and the events that transpired with his friend Craig and a Rogue Watcher.
It definitely answered some burning questions. For such a short story it was rather packed and quite dark by the end.
'Free will was an illusion; thinking otherwise was impossible.'
The world as Scott Beck understands it is over, plunged now into an odd reality of Watchers and dates. Scott is among the 144,000 Chosen by a powerful AI that decides when a person's life is over; with Watchers carrying out the task, believing that now people can live a full life knowing when you'll die. Scott hates it but when a rogue Watcher takes the life of his friend on his date; Scott is determined to find the individual before he can cause more harm. But Scott will discover that free will isn't really there but that won't stop him from trying to have a choice... and a future. A hauntingly beautiful introduction to a deep, dystopian series... highly recommended.
After reading The Warm Machine (Humanity book 1) by Seth Raines, I had to check out this prequel. It was great! I do wish I had read it prior to reading book 1 as it gives the back story of characters from Scott’s past that are only mentioned in The Warm Machine. All in all, this novella was a great, quick read with interesting characters and a good story line.
I really enjoyed this book. I read it over 2 nights. It is kind of sad people waiting for the day out their death to come and believing there is no free will to make your own choices. I look forward too reading the next book The Warm Machine.
