Best-selling author Susan Mason was born in England where, as a child, she always enjoyed reading and writing stories. Enid Blyton's children's mysteries were her first real craze. She collected and read the whole "The Mystery of.." series. Later she moved on to other genres like historical fiction, discovering authors like Jane Austen and Thomas Hardy.
When she was a teenager, she moved with her family to live in Australia, where she finished school and qualified as a CPA in Sydney. Later she returned to the UK, where she completed a Masters in Biblical Studies at Kings College London.
It was only later in her career, when she began freelance work, that she became an author. Her primary interest is to write for children, both fiction and non-fiction. "It is my hope, as I share my delight in stories and info-picture books, that my writing will help make children happy," she says.
Axolotl! was the first in a series of info-picture books about Funny Fauna. Her second book, The Little Chick of Sunrise Farm, is an illustrated storybook for children. The short novel, Life According to Zoe, was inspired by the family puppy.
She lives in London with her husband Phil, daughter Emma and pet Labrador Zoe.
Written in an easy to read style, this book is appropriate for all ages without being condescending to any. Each page is packed with facts that hold reader's interest. The helpful illustrations are bright and clear photographs. Points of special interest include the smallest gecko, the gecko that don't lay eggs, those that clone themselves and their noted 'stickability'. This book may well prompt some readers to want a gecko as a pet and there is useful information about owning and caring for one. An altogether informative, stimulating and enjoyable read.
My kids are currently obsessed with geckos. We are in a tropical country now and have lots of geckos in the house and they have been so curious about these creatures so this book came in useful. My kids are young (1.5 and 3.5) so they can't read all the words but it felt similar to reading our Nat Geo books and there were great pictures to engage them. Definitely a thumbs up from us!
A fascinating and thorough book about Gecko facts including fun age-appropriate terms like “stickability” and “unstuckability”. You’ll find tons of great information complemented with bright colourful photographs. Who knew there was so much to learn about geckos? Did you know they have one hundred teeth? Have you heard of a gargoyle gecko? This is an awesome book for those reptile - lizard - gecko loving kids!
