It’s homecoming weekend in Sugarland, Tennessee and ghost hunter Verity Long is tickled to see so many souls—living and dead—back in town to celebrate. But not all reunions are happy ones, and when Verity stumbles upon a dead body by the football field, it appears someone has already evened the score.
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Angie Fox writes sweet, fun, action-packed mysteries. Her characters are clever and fearless, but in real life, Angie is afraid of basements, bees, and going up stairs when it is dark behind her. Let’s face it. Angie wouldn’t last five minutes in one of her books.
Angie is best known for her SOUTHERN SPIRITS™ mysteries, and for her ACCIDENTAL DEMON SLAYER books.
The Haunted Homecoming by Angie Fox Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries #10. Paranormal cozy mystery. Can be read as a stand-alone but better as part of the series. Cliffhanger although the mystery itself is solved.
Homecoming week in Sugarland, TN is a celebration that brings Verity’s mother home from traveling the U.S. via mobile coach. When the time capsule is opened during the festivities a body is found included in the vault. Verity uses Franky’s ghostly power to investigate. In her typical ghost hunting style, Verity talks to ghosts and towns people investigating what might have happened. With her mother spreading stories and updates to everyone she meets, the danger intensifies as they get closer to discovering the secrets of the past. Meanwhile, Franky is going through a confidence crisis when girlfriend Molly seems to prefer El Gato.
This last piece were the funniest parts of the book. El Gato is apparently a smooth operator! A time capsule from 1985 made me feel nostalgic and old with the music and styles. I love the series, Verity, Ellis, Franky, Melody and the continuity with ghosts reappearing. It’s a fun cozy mystery adventure although this one leaves us with a cliffhanger of what may happen next. A visit with friends and a little excitement to spice up the day.

4.5. I hate to be left hanging when I know the next book won’t be for months.

There is nothing I like better than the drama and mystery surrounding to opening of a long buried time capsule. Oh, the secrets that will be reveled, the mysteries solved and the murder that is sure to occur. We have all that, for sure, and the plot was great, but I am getting so tired of the constant conflict between Verity and her ghost Frankie. It was fun for the first eight books, but has begun to wear in the last two. I think it is time for Frankie to go into the light and for Verity to get a real live.
This is Homecoming Weekend and Verity's mother has returned. Verity is excited to have her mother home . . . except that every other phrase out of Mom's mouth is a zinger straight at Verity's psyche. Tilly also can't seem to keep things that Verity has told her to herself and Verity isn't happy having her ghost hunting business blabbed about town.
When the time capsule is opened, guess what? It contains . . . a dead body. Verity is on the case. After all ghosts are her specialty, but this particular ghost is proving difficult to track down. Verity doesn't have Frankie's full attention either. Our gangster ghost is having girlfriend problems and is hiding from El Gato and the Cuban mob.
Sugarland is bursting with hometown pride as it hosts a festive week leading up to Homecoming. This year is extra special because due to a need to move the flagpole so the football field can be expanded, they must dig up the time capsule buried back in 1985. And, oh the secrets that time vault is hiding.
As tenth entry in the Southern Ghost Hunter series, The Haunted Homecoming is not the best place to start. In fact, it feels like matters are getting closer to the end as it is Verity’s turn to come to terms with family like Frankie had to do in the previous book.
It was interesting meeting Verity’s mom, Tilly, and seeing Verity so consternated when her flitting, gossipy butterfly of a mom seems impervious to her hints to be circumspect and careful about Verity’s ghostly detecting. It is easy to feel for Verity as she tries to rein her in, but also funny because it is obvious that what frustrates Verity about her mom are traits they share. Her sheriff’s deputy boyfriend and her ghostly gangster partner are always telling her not to rush into situations without due caution or talk so much when investigating. Verity is in a tiff for much of the book because of mom issues and finally has to analyze why and settle it with her mom. Additionally, I had to laugh at her reaction to the unexpected romance her sweet and smart librarian sister Melody gets up to with one of Verity’s town archenemies.
Frankie is having his own existential crisis because Molly, his ghostly gal, wants commitment and Frankie doesn’t see himself as the type to keep or deserve a steady relationship. His method of coping with his relationship woes are straight out of a gangster wise guy handbook if there were one and he is not above roping Verity into his schemes in exchange for his help on her latest murder case and the chance to interview the victim’s ghost if she can only find her. Frankie cracks me up each time and he is a good dash of tart pragmatism to Verity’s sometimes overly sweet naivete.
The murder victim died at her 1985 Homecoming dance as the queen so there was plenty of 80’s nostalgia present as well as the bittersweet atmosphere of the reunion group that were potential witnesses and suspects. Verity ends up immersed in her mom’s own past as Tilly was the best friend to the dead Ashley. It was not a clear path of evidence to the reveal especially since there is all the festival activities, family dynamics, and Frankie’s antics that overshadow the mystery for much of the book (and I’m not complaining to have it that way).
To summarize, it was full of all sorts of family and Homecoming, ghostly fun and a mystery tucked in there to get things exciting in the end. There is a mild cliffhanger at the very end meant to lead directly into the next book and I can’t wait. I can see that the series is coming to a culmination soon. This is a favorite paranormal cozy mystery series that I heartily recommend.
I rec’d an eARC of this book from Net Galley to read in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoy this series and this book is everything I've come to expect from it. Verity is once again working with Frankie, trying to find and talk to ghosts to help her solve a murder. In between sleuthing she is trying to manage her mother's tendency to share all of Verity's secrets with everyone while dressing Lucy the skunk in adorable outfits.
There’s nothing like high school football in a small town. Sugarland is no different. This year it is bigger than ever because they are going to open the time capsule that was buried in 1985. Even Verity’s mom is coming back. But everyone is shocked to find there is a body…of the homecoming queen everyone thought ran away that night. Now Verity with the help of Frankie (well not so much his help because he has girlfriend problems) and the unwanted help of her mother is determined to find the killer.
It is a solid mystery and a lot of fun. Fox’s take on ghosts is somewhat unusual in that they can change and grow, not stuck in a repeating pattern. As such, the ghosts can have a real life in the afterlife including dating which brings a lot of hilarity when Frankie has girlfriend problems and has to hide from El Gato and the Cuban mob (all ghosts, of course). The skunk is adorable and steals scenes.
Enjoy this ghostly cozy and forget your worries.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in return for an honest review.
The Haunted Homecoming is book 10 in the Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries series. I love this series and the books this author writes so I jumped on this as soon as it was released. Although this book was entertaining, it isn’t my favorite from the series. I think it was more of a it’s not you it’s me situation. I really didn’t care for Verity’s mother and there was so much of her in this book that it just didn’t work for me. I enjoyed seeing all of my favorite characters, especially Lucy, and I think most of all, I enjoyed that Ellis’ mom, Virginia Wydell, was not a presence in this book. I am really over her and all of her drama so this was a refreshing change of pace. There was one part in this book where the author about gave me a heart attack but thankfully all ended well. The narration was great as usual. I love Tavia as Verity. I will be eagerly awaiting the release of book 11.
I love Verity Long and her skunk Lucy. With Verity's ability to communicate with ghosts, her life is quite interesting and she never fails to make me laugh. Verity's mom and step dad are in town for a reunion and opening of the time capsule from her mom's graduating class. Verity's mom is anxious to see her best friend Ashley, and when her body is discovered, Verity can't stop herself from finding the truth. I really enjoy this series and each book gets more interesting. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of this book. #TheHauntedHomecoming #NetGalley.
I’m starting to wonder if the author doesn’t like their own main character. She continues to put Verity in such humiliating situations that I wonder why Verity stays in Sugarland. The continual lack of funds or a real job for Verity is starting to bother me severely. Like I stated earlier, it is like she doesn’t like Verity anymore.
The story was good, but I was not expecting to not like Verity’s mom and it seemed everyone involved in the past was not likable at all. Even the victim came off as not likable and again the villain is very obvious, and the reader immediately shakes their head when Verity and her mom are so trusting of everything folks say and do. You would think after finding so many murders in Sugarland, Verity would be a little more cautious.
I’m seeing a real lack of character growth for Verity and Frankie. There is no movement toward any changes in their characters’ actions. Verity seems to continually get walked over by everyone and she just stays polite because it’s “the southern” thing to do. Also, her judgmental attitude toward her sister’s new relationship came off as rude. That is not southern. Frankie has not changed at all and the fact he is never around when Verity needs him makes me think the author doesn’t know how to deal with Frankie still being a character. He is basically there for humor and not really part of the series.
Ellis was nothing but a side character in this one. Which is odd, but the author continually has Verity make stupid mistakes where she ends up alone with the villain. No growth or movement in their relationship either.
The books are easy, and I’m invested in them now so will continue but it is getting harder and harder with each book.
The setting of this book makes me feel at home. I grew up in a small town in Germany and I know exactly what the author is describing, especially gossip-wise. I thoroughly enjoyed the small-town vibes and the paranormal aspects of the book. The case was interesting and reminded me of an episode of “Bones” with the time-capsule element. I did not read the first installments of this series, but I think the relationships and past events were summarized well enough to dive right into the case. The one thing I did not like about the story was that I just could not connect with Frankie. He was a very annoying character, and I was tempted to skim over his fits and complaints (which happened quite often). In fact, the case would probably have been solved much earlier if it wasn’t for his “tantrums”. The book would have been a solid 4-star for me, but sadly I just can’t get over how much I disliked Frankie.
**Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
My second in this series although it is the tenth instalment, sometimes Verity Long would like to forget that she lives with the ghost of a 1920s gangster. But the reluctant housemates must work together when on homecoming weekend in Sugarland, Tennessee a dead body is spotted near the football field. A celebration with festivities lasting four days is underway kicking off with a jamboree in the town square. When a long-buried time capsule is opened during the festivities, dating back to 1985 at the time when Verity's mum's class were graduating, the body is revealed: a woman in a frock.
I love Angie Fox’s fun and humorous writing style and I thought the plot was wonderfully engaging and imaginative. If you are a fan of cozy mysteries, then you need to check out The Haunted Homecoming. It's comical, and it will definitely keep you guessing. This very happy reader highly recommends it!
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Moose Island Books via NetGalley and this review is my unbiased opinion.
The Haunted Homecoming by Angie Fox has Verity Long welcoming her mother, Tilly and stepdad to Sugarland, Tennessee for the 106th Annual Sugarland Homecoming Festival. The town will be opening their time capsule that weekend as well. When the time capsule is opened, a woman in a red dress is found dead inside. It turns out to be Tilly’s best friend who disappeared the night of her homecoming dance. Tilly asks Verity to investigate and get justice for her friend. Verity will have to do her sleuthing while helping Frankie evade a Cuban mobster intent on killing him (after a couple of decades of torture). Verity will need to solve the murder with one reluctant ghost and one overeager mother.
The Haunted Homecoming by Angie Fox is the 10th The Southern Ghost Hunter Mystery. It can be read as a standalone, but you will be missing out on a delightful series. I look forward to reading a new Verity and Frankie book each year and so does my mother. When she heard I had gotten The Haunted Homecoming, she insisted I download it on her device. I thought The Haunted Homecoming was easy to read with developed characters and plenty of humor. I laughed often while reading this entertaining tale (and so did my mother). Verity must deal with her mother who insists on telling people every detail of her life (especially the embarrassing stories and stuff Verity wants kept secret like her ghost hunting adventures). Frankie, of course, is up to no good. He has a Cuban mobster gunning for him which has Frankie plotting a way to get even. The mystery was fun to follow. A cold case has Verity questioning her mother’s old classmates—those alive and those who have passed. Verity had plenty of “help” from her mother. Verity’s mother provided many laugh-out-loud moments that included Lucy’s wearing a cheerleading outfit with a bow for her head and a wreath for Frankie’s shed. The author ended the book on a cliffhanger which has me eager to read Give Up the Ghost. You cannot help but love a book that makes you laugh and smile. The Haunted Homecoming is witty tale with an aggrieved girlfriend, a killer Cuban, a rumormonger mother, a freaked-out Frankie, a lovable Lucy, and a vexed Verity.
Verity Long eagerly anticipates her hometown’s homecoming weekend. She cannot wait to see her mother again – who returns home to watch the opening of the time capsule her class buried in 1986. The unveiling reveals more than what the community expects. Verity decides to use her ghostly expertise to help solve the case. However, her mother and her ghostly partner makes things difficult. Can Verity find the killer before the end of homecoming? Or will she find more than what she bargained for? Sheriff Ellis Wydell expects more than the usual trouble during Sugarland, Tennessee’s homecoming weekend. The opening of a time capsule buried in 1986 brings even more people to his hometown. However, no one expects a dead body to be among the buried contents. Ellis knows that he cannot keep Verity, or her mother, from investigating the case. Can Ellis trust Verity to be vigilant and careful in her ghostly investigation? I like the emergence of this new side of Verity’s personality. She is done with people taking advantage of her niceness and kindness. Verity no longer allows people to push her around but holds her own ground, thanks to a certain gangster’s influence. I adore how Verity refuses to use her relationship with Ellis as a shield or weapon. She prefers to fight her own battles. What I like the most about Verity is her relationship with her mother. The two do not have the cookie-cutter perfect relationship. They have their fair share of problems. The only complaint I have is that Ellis did not have much “show time” in this novel. He seemed to be mostly in the background, only to appear here or there. The danger element of Verity’s ghost career still concerns Ellis, but he is making the effort to work through that. I adore that about him. What I love the most about Ellis is his protectiveness towards Verity and Lucy. He adores Verity’s pet skunk. Frankie has shown incredible growth in this book. He is at a crossroads in his afterlife. Frankie cannot help but feel inadequate when compared to his late brother and sister-in-law’s romance, and that feeling stands in the way of his relationship with Molly. It is uncharted territory for the snarky gangster. What I love the most about Frankie is his concern towards Lucy. He and the skunk have always had a tenuous relationship. However, when someone threatens Lucy, he quickly forgets his woes and wants to protect her. THE HAUNTED HOMECOMING is book ten in Angie Fox’s comical paranormal romance series, SOUTHERN GHOST HUNTER MYSTERIES. The story can easily stand alone. However, I highly suggest reading the prior nine books and novellas to understand both Verity and Frankie’s gradual evolution. I approve of the direction the author went with side characters, Melody and Duranja. THE HAUNTED HOMECOMING is an entertaining, quirky and light-hearted mystery tale. I never grow bored reading this series. I am on pins-and-needles for the next installment!
Was I hooked by that book? Oh, yes. It is fun and exciting as always.
The town of Sugarland is celebrating homecoming weekend and everyone is involved. Even Verity's mother makes a rare appearance in her hometown to attend the festivities. The whole town is in attendance to witness the early opening of the time capsule. And things start to heat up for Verity and Ellis when a body is discovered.
I am loving this series so much and I loved this one as well. Franky is in a heavy funk because his ghostly girlfriend seems to enjoy the company of El Gato more. His antics are entertaining, as always. Verity and her mother aren't having the joyful reunion they both wanted as her mother keeps blabbing all of Verity's ghost hunting secrets to anyone willing to listen.
I would have liked to see more of Ellis and Verity together. I love the two of them, and they are still a great couple, I just wanted a bit more intimacy between them, I guess. The biggest relationship growth was between Verity and her mother. I also enjoyed the little side plot with Melody. There are less ghostly interactions, but Franky is more than enough ghost for any story. I'm looking forward to the next one.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I had been anxiously anticipating The Haunted Homecoming (book #10) for almost a year. I have been utterly charmed by this story overall and by these characters. I love the murder-mystery aspects and the 1920’s tag-a-long ghost. Yet, for all of my excitement and joy when I think about this series, this book didn’t quite 'make the grade' like I’d hoped. It was okay, but certainly not the humorous romp I’d come to expect.
Up until this point, Verity’s mom has been mysteriously absent from her and Melody’s lives. Other than a case of wanderlust, I’m not sure that there’s much of a reason for this (or, if there is, it’s one that still has yet to be explained even after 10 books in this series). I was not opposed to finally being introduced to Verity’s mom (especially since Verity’s felt more like an orphan this entire time) but the woman I met was not worth her presence. Tilly was an immature and a loud-mouthed gossip. She didn’t care who she hurt, embarrassed, or put in danger (even if that person was herself) because she was too dumb to recognize it. She was irritating and her presence caused turmoil all throughout the story.
More that that though, Verity and Tilly’s relationship felt rather forced. It was like they were both fighting to be heroines of this story and their interactions and relationship with each other just didn’t seem grounded in any real emotion toward one another. It didn’t feel fleshed out, complex, or layered. The emotion that was displayed didn’t hit the mark in any real way. Mild anger, hurt, frustration, and resentment were hinted at or a lack of understanding expressed, but I always felt detached from what the characters were conveying and I was apathetic at best. Their relationship never hooked me into feeling anything at all.
I think so much of this book focused on Verity’s mom telling the entire town their step-by-step movements, theories, and assumptions along with the HUGE distraction of all of the events and activities surrounding Homecoming/the time capsule that a lot of the charm that has been so incredibly present throughout the rest of the series, was missing from this book.
Sure, Frankie still got up to a few of his regular antics and his love life certainly featured at times throughout this novel, but it felt like his love life was also part of a distraction and Frankie was never there when Verity needed him. His trouble with Molly in the romance department felt like little more than a bad plot device and seemed really removed from the rest of the story. For some reason, his tantrums seemed to irritate me more throughout this novel instead of make me laugh as well.
Ellis had a cameo or two but that was about it. He was there (sometimes) throughout the novel, making quick and flashy appearances before immediately running off once more. As more and more time goes on between this couple that I love, I just keep expecting to get swept up into more of their romance and relationship together. Unfortunately, in The Haunted Homecoming, Ellis just seemed unneeded in most of this novel and their “romantic moments” (if you can even call them that) fell flat (with the exception of their short make-out scene under the bleachers).
Additionally, I had the killer pegged fairly early on. I know the author tried to give us a few different possibilities and perhaps she couldn’t help it that I guessed correctly, but it’s always disappointing when I know who the killer is well before I should. There were not any real twists or turns, few “big” reveals, and waayyy too much chaos overall for the plot to be well developed.
I also didn’t like Ashley as the victim in this story. This is a contemporary novel so, while I can understand the excitement one might feel to meet up with old friends you graduated high school with decades ago, is the author honestly trying to convince me that NO ONE from Tilly's class tried to look Ashley up on social media throughout the years? No one asked her family members (while they were still alive) if they’d heard from her at all? No one cared enough to be suspicious when she never called, messaged, posted pictures, or sent a letter? But okay, let’s just say that’s the case. What about the emotion that is displayed by Tilly for her long-lost high school friend? After 30 years please don’t act like you still “thought about her every day” (while you never tried to find out what happened to her – even if you didn’t know she was dead) or act like you were still BFFs with her even after all that time of no communication/contact. It was just so unbelievable and the emotion displayed was dramatically over-the-top.
To make matters worse, the humor and charm this series tends to have simply seemed to vanish throughout a lot of this novel. This is usually the part when I’m praising the glorious achievements of Angie Fox as a writer and, while I still have faith in her to bring this back around, this book was a disappointment.
However, I did love the funny hints about Alec and Melody’s relationship. While I’m not sure he’s been my favorite character throughout the prior novels, I think watching him and Verity try to get along for the Melody’s sake will be an adventure. Hopefully he’ll stop accusing Verity of being a murderer from now on – that’ll begin to make family dinners a bit awkward.
(Although, as a side note, I find it really frustrating that Melody and Duranja’s relationship had the most development of ANY relationship in this book and that I was invested in it the most - because nothing else was really happening elsewhere. They were barely-there side characters!! How? How has the author missed the mark so much with Verity + her mom / Verity + Frankie / Frankie + Molly / Verity + Ellis when these were the main characters?
I love this series and I hate that I’m only rating this book in the “okay” range. Honestly, it was really hard for me to connect with almost anything going on in this novel and I’m not happy with where this book ended. With that being said, this hasn’t deterred my overall love for the story and I will still wait anxiously for book #11 in 2022. Hopefully, the next book will swing back around for me!
This is book #10 in the Southern ghost hunter series. Sugarland, TN is having homecoming and this will be a big one since the town is opening the 1985 time capsule early so they can do some construction at the school. Verity is very happy since her mother will finally be back in town( she has been traveling in an RV seeing the country) to see her classes time capsule be opened. When the capsule is finally opened a body is found!! Who could it be? How did they get there? Can Verity solve this murder with the help of her ghost friend Frankie? With her mother unable to not tell everyone what Verity is doing it is getting very dangerous. Though this mystery is solved in this book it does end on a cliffhanger for the next book in the series.
Verity and Lucy are back for another adventure, and I was so glad to start reading it. This latest has Verity’s mother and stepdad in town for the town’s homecoming and opening of a time capsule that was put in place her mother’s senior year of high school. I have to admit that I felt old reading this as I’m almost the same age as Verity’s mom! LOL! Anyway, this had the same great writing I know to expect form this author, and there were a few nice surprises, too, along that way. The book ended on a small, sort of, maybe, cliffhanger, and I’m eager to read the next one. Great addition to the series. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
It's Homecoming time in Sugarland! During the celebration the town will also be opening a time capsule earlier than planned due to expansion to the football field area. Verity's mom, Tilly, and her stepdad are in town for the event. Tilly even brought a cute outfit for Verity's pet skunk Lucy to wear to homecoming! Unfortunately once the time capsule is open Verity is busy helping her boyfriend Ellis solve an old murder mystery with her ghostly partner Frankie and the "help" of Verity's mom. This was a fun read and one of my favorites in this series. It was nice finally being introduced to Verity's mother and stepdad. I hope to see them in future books. The homecoming events were fun. I like the relationship between Frankie and Molly. They're a cute couple!
I don’t even know where to begin! There was so much going on with this book, and for a quick second I thought I’d figured it out, only to find out I was so far off base I wasn’t even on the same playing field! I absolutely loved seeing Verity’s (slightly annoying) mother and step dad in this book. She’s definitely quite the character! The events of Homecoming, as well as Frankie’s love life drama made this book a page turner. I’m glad Verity’s mom Tilly got a form of closure and I am SO anxious to see what is going to happen next, with both the mystery item in the time capsule as well as with Melody’s new love interest.
One of my most favorite series ever!!! I loved loved loved this book. I loved the storyline, I loved the bickering Verity had with her mom, and I loved the setting. It was a refreshing change to see Verity accepting her newfound public acknowledgement of seeing ghosts and I hope to see more of it! Something else I loved? Zero appearances of her almost mother in law. What I didn't like? Frankie. The last 3 books have so thoroughly turned me off to him that in the beginning when he went "missing," I wasn't even bummed at the thought of no more Frankie like I used to be previously. The cliffhanger in this one has me eagerly anticipating the next book though! Can't wait to read it!
Man, I love this fun Cozy Urban-Fantasy series! Angie Fox keeps delivering these sweet mysteries right in the heart of Surgarland TN. This one heats up by finding a dead Homecoming Queen in the midst of all the pomp and ceremony at the beginning of the annual festival! Verity certainly has her work cut out for her as she investigates the case while dealing with both, her very alive, and very thoughtless mother, and Frankie, her very dead ganster friend/ally who's currently having his own girl problems. All the while, Verity's trying to make sure that she doesn't become the next victim! Grab the book and while away some time in Sugarland! Tavia Gilbert is the perfect voice for Verity, so be sure to add the audio version when you pick up the ebook!
Oh this is such a treat! I really loved Verity's new adventure and discovering more about her mother! Verity has her hands full between her mother who can't keep a secret, an murder she must investigate with a deadline and a homecoming event making everyone crazy. This is simply such a great cozy mystery to enjoy! Between the action, humour and romance ( for several living and dead couples) this was simply fabulous! i could not stop ready and what a cliffhanger! i'm so curious about what is hinted at the end....oh next book won't be here fast enough
I loved this tenth in the series as I have all the others so far. Verity's mother is coming to town for homecoming, Verity is stressed enough with her mother's tendency to mention things she shouldn't but when a body is found and her mother puts herself in danger by investigating, Verity decides she must find the answers fast. I love the characters in this series, and the many moments that make me laugh out loud. The mystery was good and kept me guessing, I didn't figure it out until Verity did. I will definitely continue on with this series.
Wow! Couldn’t put it down! Best one yet! Love this series! Ms. Fox is an expert at “setting the stage”. Her descriptions of people and places make it easy to visualize while you read her stories. Her characters are definitely “characters“! They all have their particular place in the story. The setting of a small, Southern town is one of my favorites and the added ghosts just makes it perfect!
This is the perfect fall cozy mysteries read. While enjoying homecoming festivities in her small hometown of Sugarland, Verity is tasked to help with the murder investigation of her mother's best friend from high school. With the help of her ghost friend Frankie, and the entire town of crazy characters, Verity sets out to find the killer. I love diving into this light read series and I'm always thoroughly entertained. I did figure out the killer really early in this one, but I still enjoyed it.
I really enjoyed this book, I read most of it in one day (life got in the way) I was very wrapped up in the story. It was very hard to figure out the killer, and I didn't figure it out.
I was upset that this book ended on a cliffhanger though
*I received this book in exchange for an honest review
The perfect Halloween read. I actually read this book as a stand alone, but now plan on going back and reading the others.
Verity can see and talk to the ghosts that no one else can. This sets her up to be the perfect crime solver when a murder happens in such a small town during Homecoming. I love "cozy" murder mysteries as they are lighter reads, and this is the perfect ghost story style cozy mystery that I finished the week before Homecoming at our school.
I will say Frankie the ghost got on my nerves a bit. He seemed to interrupt right when the story was intriguing. But, I'm pretty sure that was the point. :)
Overall, if you are a fan of cozy murder mysteries, I would recommend this book.

I downloaded this one on Netgalley for the r/CozyMystery Halloween theme read and let's face it, no one does ghosts better than Angie Fox!
First off, I loved the 80s theme. Ahhh high school in the 80s...poofy dresses, poofier hair...you know, like omg totally awesome. Brought back memories of dancing to the newly released Two of Hearts by Stacey Q at my first high school dance. *sigh* Memories...But anyway, I'm hear to talk about this book; it's Homecoming in Sugarland and the festivities are just getting underway when a body is found of a missing Homecoming queen who supposedly left town after the dance in 1985 (spoiler: she didn't, but I figured that part out before I even started reading it.) We also meet Verity's mother for the first time and really, what woman can't relate to Tilly and Verity's relationship? So realistic, I loved it.
But my favorite part of this was that a lot of the plot centered on Frankie; the loveable gangster ghost is going through some issues, wreaking havoc on Verity's investigation. I loved that it made Frankie a bit more dimensional and...human? for lack of a better word. On one hand, I feel like it was a long time coming and on the other hand, I don't know why it took this long to do!
A totally rad book from start to finish, like fer sure!
***I received an ARC from Net Galley in exchange for my honest review
It’s homecoming weekend in Sugarland, Tennessee, and the entire town has turned out to see the opening of the time capsule. But when a dead body is discovered buried inside, Verity must use her ghost hunting powers to discover the truth as to who killed her mom's best friend. I love the Verity Long books. Really, what is not to love about an outspoken southern gal who has a pet skunk named Lucy, a sidekick ghost named Frankie who is a gangster, and she solves mysteries? I burst out laughing, picturing Lucy in her little cheerleading outfit. How cute is that? If you are a fan of cozy mysteries, then you definitely need to check this one out. It is a lot of fun, and it will definitely keep you guessing. I highly recommend it!
