Gouverner par les fake news

Rate this book

In this very interesting book author gives a very brief, but intense (again, he is French speaking and French sometimes can be very intense), overview of what one becomes aware as time goes by, and one tries to keep up with the news and events in the world. Book I have read is translated to English, and book could benefit from better editing (i.e. acronyms are sometimes French, sometimes English, text formatting might be odd at times and few sentences seem to be missing something (sentence structure ends up weird)). But even with these issues, message of the book is more than clear and very disturbing.

Isn't it magnificent that when you check the news it is like you are reading comic book events. Heroes are heroes to almost ridiculous levels while villains are so base you might feel sick just thinking about them? And everything is so nicely delineated, no gray areas, and whoever becomes an ally seems to be washed in some super strong chemical that nothing that was mentioned about them is ever remembered - they were always our friends and allies, were they not? - and whoever says anything to oppose the powers to be, well that one was always an enemy, were they not?

This perfidy, this play on short term memory of the masses is something that needs to be made a major crime against humanity. Ability to switch stories, make events believable or not, and - the greatest terror of it all - escape with impunity any consequence of the lies that have cost thousands if not hundreds of thousands their lives ...... obliteration seems to be the only punishment for this excrement of human society.

While people like to say how Donald Trump was a person that brought this type of behavior into political life (I had several people persuading me this is true) I beg to differ. It all started in 1990s with president who suddenly found his member swallowed by technically a secretary, who lied and lied and lied about it (who, me and she? nooooo) and in the meantime bombed, struck from distance countries on his own (of course leading his alliance to share the blame) and did everything to distract the public. Then it continued by other president in 2000's who attacked two countries - one out of sheer reflex as result of 9/11 and other for completely false reasons - destroying them completely, starting almost 24 years of utter chaos (still ongoing).

And when all of this was recorded and identified and mea-culpa's done (in that eternal Western way of making films) what actually happened? Did anyone lose their position in any of the governments involved? Of course not. So why would West stop with the practice? They found the perfect formula whenever domestic issues pile up, scandals come up - they pick up country from the list of to-be-adversaries and just start the ugly, primitive campaign of propaganda using the ugly and primitive media people, zealots - for all means and purposes socket puppets whose only purpose is to constantly report ambiguous news, change them, remove the problematic parts (in some cases not report them at all) and push on the political views until their masters say enough, we now concentrate on something else. It is quite a magic act to make all of this mind constructs and never give an actual and reasonable answer to question - why?

Short sighted, undefined policies, literary no plans on how to proceed after certain milestones nor any analysis what will be potential side-effects - only view being that whoever is target is to be sanctioned and potentially bombarded year after year until everybody just forget why did this all start. Making stories and antagonizing nations that then are declared enemies because they start to suspect the West's motives (I mean, on basis of what - right? Duh!) and cycle just starts anew.

While author is very critical of French speaking media, and considers English speaking media to be more oriented towards investigations, I think he is just being generous. All of the Western media mutated very much into either completely tabloid format of news or state protectors with some serious influence. Independence of the media - balance on the governments, voice from the corridors of power - is long lost, and they have become almost uniformly spoke-persons of their governments. What would commonly be called - sellouts.

Point is that masses have become redundant, they are no longer important. While previously politician would have to worry about image and actual policies because this would make a difference when it comes to national support, today it is important to be active on social media, have flashy photos and speak following the loudest voice (usually the most moronic ones) on the network. Nobody looks at what you did and how you did it, all of that can be side-tracked, nobody remembers what happened year ago. And if somebody mentions that, you can always find the reason why you did it.

Because hey, you can say you lied about the reasons for Brexit, but who cares, it is done deal, water under the bridge. Or you can talk about foreign power meddling into your affairs but you can reset the elections in countries [even your very allies] because you just know people would not vote that way on their own :):):) bloody h. Because politicians today are made and (re)made in media - masses of gold-fishes just dont have capacity to follow all the BS nor will power to actually do anything about it. Lots of them are indisposed (that idiotic oh, who do I trust question) instead to use the most ancient penalty for politicians - go against their party (even if you sympathize them) and oust them from power for several terms, make them sweat for their position, punish them for perversion of ideals they were supposed to stand for.

We have come back into a form of techno-feudal age - elites are formed who think they have the power to mold the society to their image through media, and compliant masses that really need to re-learn things that have been forgotten from at least 1848 if they want to have something out of their lives. Security apparatus is more than willing to do whatever elites tell them (just remember the reactions and repression during The Sickness) because they act as nothing more than dependents on these very elites. If need be they will lie, knowingly to make things worse, because they need to protect the saints.

This is very disturbing book, especially in light of events in Syria from the very beginning and especially the turn to the worse in 2024 - to see how state got ripped apart by forces from outside for reasons that are so sick and with players these forces ally with at the beginning, as is case now ....... terrifying.

Age that started in 1990's, that was supposed to bring the prosperity and end of a very long simmering conflict culminated in a group that started to think of themselves as King and Nation makers, Untouchables, Keepers of the Truth and Virtue, the ultimate force on Earth. What a mistake to make.

Highly recommended to be able to see how we got to our current times. How we will get out of this mud is yet to be seen.
