Borrowed Memories

Rate this book
There was always something unsettling about empty buildings, but more so now, a sense that they watched her, waited for her, as if they knew she were the only one with whom they could share their secrets…. Brynn cherished her quiet but full life as a South Dakota farmwife, mom, and artist before she was abducted, brutally assaulted, and left for dead. Though Brynn’s memories of her own unsolved assault remain elusive, the resulting trauma has left her with the eerie ability to see memories buried deep within the walls of old, abandoned buildings. In her fervent search for her attackers, Brynn’s newfound gift has proved useful, also helping solve a 16-year-old mystery involving Brynn’s best friend. It’s also piqued the interest of the local sheriff, who’s asked Brynn to work with him on other local cold cases. As a consultant to Sheriff Raske’s task force, Brynn delves into the heartbreaking and grim unsolved crimes of her community, her own haunting case among them. Brynn learns that small town secrets are often intertwined, and now, caught in the web, she discovers too late that someone wants her off the case. But which case? And how far will they go?

3✨ I was just bored.. 😩 I just feel like this book was all over the place. Something interesting would happen and then it would just fizzle for me. It wasn’t until the end where shit was actually happening that I was finally intrigued. Also I’ve got questions about Brynn’s “seeing” abilities. She clearly has them and the concept is cool. But it says she can’t stop them from coming when she walks into houses, yet she only get visions at houses? Not at any other type of building, like the nursing home?? That just doesn’t make sense to me. I think I would have enjoyed that part more if she has learned to control them somehow???

Brynn, a South Dakota farm wife, mom, and artist was abducted, brutally assaulted, and left for dead. Her case unsolved, the trauma left her an eerie ability to see memories buried deep within the walls of old, abandoned buildings. She helps solve a 16-year-old mystery involving Brynn’s best friend. Now she's a consultant to Sheriff Raske’s task force.

I enjoyed this story and couldn't put it down. The tension stayed high as someone wants Brynn off the case. A real page-turner as suspense kept me glued to the story. Having enjoyed Vacant Eyes, I had to read this book, number two in this series.

Who's making the phone calls? Surprising answer. Twists that kept me guessing, all the way to the end. And what an ending. Brynn is an interesting character, one who pulls you into the story. I loved the "Midwest" element. I'm already finding myself looking forward to the next books Christine writes and publishes.

This is the 2nd in a series that takes place in southeast South Dakota....an area I'm very familiar with. I actually like this 2nd one better than the 1st, I think....? It's main character has the ability to 'see & hear' things that have happened inside of buildings, sort of like the walls can speak to her.....& she finds herself aiding the local police in trying to solve past crimes.....one of them being an assault that happened to her. This is a good follow up/continuation of the 1st, & as with the 1st, the author does a great job of describing the local area & small community atmosphere.....it's obvious that the author is also so familiar with this locale! I understand that she has a 3rd book planned for the series, & I'll definitely read that too!

I have been waiting for this book to come out as, living in the same town as the author, I knew she was writing it. I have read both of her previous books and really enjoyed them. It was fun to read this book as a follow up to her first novel, Vacant Eyes, which I also enjoyed. There is lots of mystery, nervous anticipation and some moments that bring out the tears. Sure hope there will be more books to come in the future!

I couldn’t wait to read this second book featuring Brynn, whose ability to “experience” memories from inside old houses on the South Dakota plains helps her solve crimes. A fascinating premise and a great story - hope another tale will be forthcoming!

Mini stories that followed the main story kept this a very interesting read. I can't wait to read the first and the third book on either end of this. It was also set in and written by an author from South Dakota so the connection to the book was stronger and made it that much more interesting.

I really like this series. Not only is it set locally but the premise is quite interesting and this was a good continuation of that promise.

I liked the book because her “ability” is something I’ve never read about before. I feel like the ending was rushed and left out some details.
