‘What’s another word for Thesaurus? – Steven Wright’ Tons of Cryptogram Fun!

Authors collectively titled Game Nest (much like Activity Nest!) have created one fine, entertaining collection of CRYPTOGRAMS (messages written in code) and in opening this exceptional book they state, ‘Cryptography can be traced back 4,000 years to the use of hieroglyphs by the Egyptians. Hieroglyphs were a secret language known only to the scribes who used them to transmit messages on behalf of their kings. A cryptogram is simply a coded message or an encryption…used for encryption of military or personal secrets as well as for entertainment purposes… Solving such puzzles has been shown to help the brain by improving memory, vocabulary, and focus. They also improve pattern recognition which is an important cognitive skill…frequent cognitive activity can keep the brain fit as we age.’

The authors then offer instruction on how to solve the substitution puzzles (each letter of the alphabet is represented by a different letter) with a solid lesson of diagrams, tips, and clear guidance. The cryptograms are famous, and not so famous, Quotes by a variety of famous people – comedians and otherwise! So we are off and running with 300 fresh and funny quotes to solve. After the 300 puzzle quotes are given, the authors add Hints for solving each quote, and finally the Answers to each quote (and Quoter) are provided!

Examples (decoded!)

THE AVERAGE DOG IS A NICER PERSON THAN THE AVERAGE PERSON – Andy Rooney

WHY DO THEY CALL IT RUSH HOUR WHEN NOTHING MOVES? – Robin Williams

WHOEVER SAID MONEY CAN’T BUY HAPPINESS DIDN’T KNOW WHERE TO SHOP – Gertrude Stein

NEVER GO TO A DOCTOR WHOSE OFFICE PLANTS HAVE DIED – Erma Bombeck

The puzzles are challenging and the resolutions are hilarious – and rewarding, both in accomplishment of the activity and the chuckles gained from the quotations. This is one terrific book for both youngsters and those beyond young (in age!). Very highly recommended.

So Much to Like, But a Pet Peeve

There is actually much to like about this cryptogram book. It has a well done introductory section that actually gives hints about how to solve cryptograms. Pretty cool! I wish more game books like this gave tips and tricks for those who might be relatively new to whatever game or activity the book is about or who haven't heard all possible tips. I like, too, that before the solutions are given for the cryptograms, the authors give four clues (e.g., O = E) for each cryptogram, potentially helping you crack the ultimate code. The quotes they chose for this book are very humorous, as promised. The original authors of these quotes include ones from history like Benjamin Franklin and Einstein, departed comedians like George Carlin and Buddy Hackett, as well as contemporary comedians and pundits like Stephen Colbert and Ricky Gervais. The only thing I did not like about this book is that the authors chose to cram as many quotes onto a page as possible. Admittedly, some of these are long quotes, but there is very little space between them on the page. Perhaps it because I first did cryptograms as a child from newspapers that gave space for you to write out not only the real sentence but also had space for you to write out the code as you figured it out, I'm always disappointed when I see contemporary cryptogram books that have no such spaces or “crack-the-code” grid. Other than that, though, I found this to be an absolutely delightful cryptogram book because of all the wonderful quotes.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Humorous Cryptograms by Game Nest was a Mind Stimulating Set of Addictive Challenges!

I enjoyed the feeling of relaxation, and accomplishment in solving each cryptogram.

These where great games to unwind to, and balance out the end of my day.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
