The Winter We Met by Samantha Tonge is a 2020 Head of Zeus publication.

Lovely cozy and sweet romance!

This book was the lone book left on my holiday reading list after Christmas. I usually file any ‘hold-overs’ away for later consideration, but since this was the only one left, and because it had ‘Winter’ in the title, and this is still winter, I decided to read it now, rather than later. Once again, I’m glad I followed my instincts.

After attending a Christmas toy trade fair, Jess meets Nik on the plane ride home. They make an instant connection- one so strong Jess decides to invite Nik to come for a visit. Unfortunately, Jess receives the bad news that her Gran’s care home is closing before Christmas. While she must find Gran a new home, she’s determined to give Willow Court one last memorable Christmas party. Nik immediately jumps in to help, charming all the
Residents of Willow Court… and making a huge impression on Jess.

But, not Oliver- Jess’ best friend and flatmate, who thinks Nik is just a little too good to be true…

The story has a warm, whimsical quality to it and although there are some festive activities featured in the story, it is still a great book to curl up with on any cold, blistery day indoors. There was one minor blip for me, which involved a thread I wish had been explored in a bit more detail, but it’s a minor complaint. I found myself utterly absorbed in the drama between Jess and Oliver, staying up past my bedtime to see how everything turned out.

Overall, this a clean and charming, heartwarming story recommended to everyone!

The description does indeed say it all - this is a heartwarming, charming festive read!

When handsome and charming Nik sits next to Jess on a plane on the way home from a Christmas Toy Fair, she had no idea the impact he would have on her life. Just what impact will this chance encounter have on her life? What will Oliver, Jess's best friend, and roommate think of her budding friendship with Nik? Is Nik too good to be true?

Jess's grandmother's care home, Willow Court set to close before Christmas, Jess is trying to find the perfect new home for her while at the same time throwing a party for the Willow Court before its closure. With help from Oliver and Nik, Jess sets out to accomplish her goal!

This proved to be a fast, engaging, charming, and endearing book. If you are looking for a festive heartwarming romance this one just might be the book for you!

Thank you to Aria and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.

Fa la la la festive! This was such a charming story bursting with holiday cheer. Jess meets Nick when she sits in the wrong seat on the plane flying home. Jess is enchanted by Nick’s old-fashioned charm. When back in the UK Jess and Nick continue to develop their friendship based on their mutual interests of toys and books. Oliver, Jess’s BFF and roommate is less than pleased with this new budding friendship. Nick seems to be a little too good to be true, but is there more to this story?

This book was so comforting like a warm hug. Jess, Nick, and Oliver were such delightful characters. I just loved the wholesome and whimsical vibe of this entire story. The residence at the home where Jess’s Gran lived were simply lovely. Yummy treats. Darling decorations. Engaging characters. Sweet relationships. A perfect Christmas gem!

This book in emojis 🎄 🐶 🎅🏻 ❄️ ✈️ 🍸

*** Big thank you to Aria for my gifted copy of this book. All opinions are my own. ***

I have felt like a bit of a big kid reading this, as within the main characters we have a toy maker and a toy shop manager. And I loved hearing about various toys especially with the focus more on the traditional sorts.

And although the toys are a focus, the main story is about Willow Court, which is the care home where Jess's gran, Alice is currently living, until they are given barely any notice of its upcoming closure.

This close to Christmas it throws their plans for a Christmas party into disarray, as well as having to look for new homes. It is down to Jess, flat mate and best friend Oliver and new handsome stranger Nik to save the day and put on a fabulous party.

We get to know all the residents of Willow Court really well, and they really are a lovely group of people.

Jess and Nik first meet when Jess sits in the wrong seat on a plane, and they get chatting and hit it off big time. Nik is a gorgeous Aussie hunk, who seems to good to be true. During the book, Oliver has his own theories about Nik, but Alf, one of the Willow Court residents with a penchant for conspiracy theories, also has a theory. And let's just say I really really Alf's theory to be true, it gave me such a stupidly big grin, it made sense, left me feeling so good for the remainder of the story.

I really enjoyed seeing the plans for the party come together, and just learning more about all the characters in this. I could really imagine Willow Court, and given my mum is currently in such a home, gives me some sort of comfort that there are places out there that will treat their residents well.

I loved everything about this book, from Buddy, to the dessert shop, everything about Nik, the craft activities, the new shop window designs Jess was coming up with and the real sense of well being and friendship amongst everyone at Willow Court.

So heart-warming, this is a book that really embodies the spirit of Christmas.

Thank you to Aria and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.,

You will take this book into your heart.
Jess Jagger is flying back to London from Germany after been to the toy trade fair's.
Nik Talvi Australian is seated beside her and it was an instant connection, making it an enjoyable flight for Jess, even after they touched down they spent the rest of the day together. Nik's family run a toy manufacturing company, and Jess works at the toyshop Under the Tree in a village Springhaye.
She had to go to work on the afternoon and Nik tagged along and was enchanted with the place.
Oliver Hart her flat mate encouraged her to text Nik to meet up again. She knows this isn't going to turn romantic with him travelling and living on the other side of the world but she did enjoy his company.
Her gran Alice is facing her beloved home Willow Court facing closure.
This book is amazingly beautiful to read.
True love is blind, and will Jess find her true Mr Winter?
A tremendous Feel good story entail's with the season's of goodwill.
There's nothing i can fault with this book, except when I saw the end.

This is an enjoyable and festive story, that’s more than just a seasonal romcom. There’s almost two stories with the toyshop element, and the Willow Court care home element. They tie together cleverly with very touching and inspiring consequences.

The characters are all larger than life and fascinating. Nik is gorgeous, Jess is strong and genuine, Gran is sweet and courageous, to name just a few of the lovely people we meet.

It’s an original Christmassy story that uses toys, a staple part of Christmas fare, and a more serious issue of senior care that can be rather fragile.

Great fun, moving, absorbing.

There's a lesson - be careful whom you sit next to on a plane, it can change your life!

I'll not say a word about the story, that's up to others, but talk about the writing, as I don't like to give anything away. This is a novel filled with fascinating characters, superbly drawn and rounded to perfection. We have Christmas spirit in abundance, even amongst the residents of Willow Court, I like to think. There is mystery too, which I seem to love lately, in exactly who and what Nico is and is up to - okay, sorry, no more story peeks. Sorry that one got through.

Samantha always gives me a conundrum when I finish her novels; it's always my favourite of hers! Well, here's to the next.

This is a 'stoke up the fire, switch off the phone, and curl up with a cup of hot chocolate' novel, perfect as the colder months draw in!

This was a slow burner in my opinion. I was very slow going and more like a chick-lit than a great romance. Definitely an easy read which I am sure people are looking for at this crazy time.

The warmth of the story leaps out of the pages. Filled with community and Christmas spirit.

Jess meets hunky Australian Nik on a flight back from a trade show for children's toys. He embeds himself in her life and and that of those around her, helping where he can. As Jess and Nik get closer, could romance be on the cards?

Will leave you wanting to visit the shop where Jess works 'Under the tree'. Will also make you want to step right in and enter 'the corner desert shop' for the tempting treats of cakes, waffles and pancakes.

Not only that but at the centre of this story is Willow Court an old people's home where Jess's grandmother lives. You learn of the life of the residents there as they try to pull off a last Christmas party before it closes.

A lovely take on a truly British winter! Refreshing read centred around the elderly of Willow Court.

This is the first book I’ve read that was written by this author and I have to say it was fantastic. I love how the author pulls you into the story.

Jess meets Nik on the airplane as she’s flying back home from a Christmas Toy Fair. She has no idea the impact that this cute meet will have on her life. Jess invites Nik, who is also in the toy business, to come and tour her toy shop that she owns and is so proud of. She really wants to get to know Nik before he has to return to Australia. At the end of the shop tour, Jess receives a phone call from the care home that her grandmother lives in. She is told that the care home, Willow Court, will be closing before Christmas, so all the residents must find a place to live before Christmas. With the help of Nik and her friend Oliver she sets out to find the perfect place for her Grandmother. The residents of Willow Court care home are so likable and it is such a joy to read about them and their lives. This festive, heartwarming Christmas romance is a must read for anyone who wants to read great book that pulls at your heartstrings.

I loved the flow of the story, it kept moving and it kept me enthralled. I couldn’t wait to find out the ending but I wasn’t ready for it to end. I recommend this book and this author. I will definitely read more from this author.

This is the perfect heartwarming Christmas read that gives you all the feels.

This book is the sort of setting you would expect to find made into a film on the Christmas channel.

Simply joyful, so glad I had the pleasure to read on this rainy afternoon.

What a cosy and warm-hearted book! This was a joy to read from beginning to end - a real festive hug in a book!

I adored the wonderful cast of characters, especially the array of residents in Willow Court, clever and resilient Jess and her relationships with gorgeous Nik and flatmate Oliver, and the adorable Buddy the dog!

This was also unpredictable in the best way possible - not quite the standard romance I expected when it started, and that made it all the better!

I also loved the toy shop setting - it made me feel like a kid again - and the It's a Wonderful Life theme for the Christmas party, a delightful reminder of one of my favourite Christmas movies!

Made me look forward to getting into bed with my Kindle every night! A book I didn't want to end! I always adore Samantha Tonge's books and this is one of the best! Perfect winter reading!

This was terrible. The whole plot was a cringefest and the lead characters unbelievably dim.

Absolutely nothing about this book worked for me. The worst part besides the dismal characters themselves may have been the descriptions of fashion and outfits worn by the characters, yikes. Oliver's story was ridiculous and his complete 180 in the end was silly. Jess was one of those lame main characters that pretends not to see what's right in front of her despite being oh soooooooooo detail oriented at work. Right. Sure.

Really no romance here and the plot plays out like one of the worst ever Hallmark films.

If I had to read one more disgusting description of a scented candle I would have puked. Seriously who brings a scented candle for every occasion? Who burns a scented candle just to spite someone who doesn't like the gross smell? Jess that's who.

I was kindly provided with a Netgalley ARC in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. I have given it 2.5 stars.

This whole book is meh! It has taken me far longer to read it than it should have. It just rambled on and on and on and didn't seem to be going anywhere, I guessed the ending half way through and it did just seem to end on that.

There was a little festivity which was nice and a little bit of drama and mystery in the form of good old Nik, who to my dismay didn't turn out to be Santa . I am just sorry I couldn't love it.

Wonderful Christmassy read, warm and funny... a cup of hot chocolate type of book. I loved all the Christmas details, the food, decorations, it all made me feel like putting up my Christmas tree. The setting of a toys shop took me back to visits to my local toy shop as a child.
However this is much more than simply feel good read, the characters are well drawn, and Nik in particular kept me guessing. I liked the story line about the care home, and the close bond between Jess and her grandmother. I really enjoyed this heartwarming and romantic read.

This is my first festive read of the year and I absolutely adored it.

When Jess ends up sitting next to Nik on a flight back to London she doesn’t know the impact he will have on her life. Feeling an instant connection, she invites him to visit and ends up introducing him to her Gran and her friends. With her Gran’s care home set to close, Jess is determined to help her find a new home that will make her happy, and to help the residents to have the best (final) Christmas party together ever! With the help of Nik, her best friend and flatmate Oliver, Buddy the dog and others – they set out to bring the party to life.

But Oliver and Alf (one of the care home residents) have reservations about Nik and his intentions…..but are they on the right track? Will Jess find the perfect place for her Gran? Will the Christmas party be the best ever? And will the year end with love for Jess?

The story and characters in this were fantastic. I absolutely love Jess, Oliver and Nik. All kind and caring, they really do all they can for Jess’ Gran and her friends. The residents are all brilliant! Each with their own backstory – which sets as a perfect reminder, that even though people live in a care/residential home, they are still the same person. They have histories, past careers and stories to tell and we should embrace and support that. And we know I love an animal…..Buddy was a particular favourite character of mine!

The storyline was magical, especially the further in you get and I could really feel the magic of Christmas coming alive – I now can’t wait!! The Winter We Met bought out so many different emotions for me. With residents worrying about losing their homes, as well as facing the many health problems that older people have to live with and with some of them suffering with dementia, parts of this were so moving. I found myself welling up more than once. But there are also many many times that will make you smile and laugh and will warm you to the bones.

I would really love to visit Under The Tree which sounds like a magical place all by itself! A wonderful little independent toy store who really have the children at the heart of all that they do. It sounds wonderful! And Willow Tree is also sounds like an amazing, caring and loving place. Tonge has done a fantastic job of bringing the settings alive and helping the reader to feel the things that the characters are feeling.

Finally, the romance….! Jess’ love life will certainly keep you guessing. I changed my mind on what would happen numerous times and was so happy with the conclusion!

So if you’re looking for a heartwarming, magical and emotive read with wonderful warm characters then you should check this out! Highly recommended by me.

The Blurb:
When charming, mysterious Nik sits next to Jess on a plane home from a Christmas toy trade fair, she never could have imagined the impact he'd have on her life. As they touch down in London, Jess is hesitant to let Nik walk away, and before she knows it, she's invited him to visit.

But time is running out with the closure looming and Jess becomes increasingly drawn to enigmatic Nik who joins forces with her and best friend Oliver to realise those plans.
Will a chance encounter on an aeroplane bring love to Jess's life or is this Christmas miracle too good to be true?

My Thoughts :
Always a fan of Samantha Tonge, I was so pleased to read her newest release and what better than a festive story.
We meet Jess Jagger and Nik Talvi. The couple meet while seated on a flight from Germany after attending a Traders Toy Fair. They have an instant connection and not just career related.
Jess works at the toyshop and Nik’s family run a manufacturing company for Toys.
When they land Jess doesnt want to part and invites Nik back to hers and to see where she works.
Also added to the mix is Jess’s Grandma Alice. When she tells Jess that they can no longer have their Chrsitmas party in the care home and she needs to find somewhere else to live, Jess and Nik set about making it happen and help to throw Willow Court Care Home one hell of a shin dig before its closure.
All the charactors were easy to fall in love with and I was routing for Jess and Nik throughout.
This story captures Love, Family and friendship. A delightful read once again by Samantha Tonge, and one that will stay with you over and beyond the festive period.

I would like to thank NetGalley, publisher Head of Zeus, and author Samantha Tonge for allowing me a free e-book copy of this book in exchange for an honest review! All thoughts and opinions are my own. First off, I was drawn to the cover and the summery of this book. This book had all of the feelings and holiday cheer I am always looking for when I sit down to read a Christmas romance story. This book had all of the feelings of a great holiday Hallmark movie. I loved the premise of the story of trying to help the residents of Willow Creek, an old folks home, have an amazing last Christmas all together. The characters were so cute and full of the Christmas spirit, Jess was such a loving granddaughter and worked very hard to find the perfect new home for her grandmother. Nik's character was well developed and a pleasant surprise. Jess' flatmate Olive had such a great relationship with Jess and their romance was so sweet! I enjoyed how the author allowed the readers to get to know all of the residents of Willow Creek. The book had a wonderful pacing from the time on the plane to the personal touches of the toy store then finally the much anticipated Willow Creek Christmas party; I did not really feel any part of this book dragged. I loved the ending of this book, which had me grinning as the last words were read. Overall, this was a wonderful book that captures the very spirit of the holidays.

This is another fantastic read by this author, a story to take you through chance encounters, worrying phone calls, new friends, festivities, friendships and romance as well as lots and lots of toys!

Accidentally sitting in the wrong seat on her flight back to London from a fabulous toy fair in Germany has Jess Jagger, toy shop manager, meeting Nik, an Australian whose family manufacture toys. The two click and end up having a meal and travelling to the idyllic sounding town where she works in the toy shop, Under the Tree. The whole High Street there sounds brilliant – I’d love to visit, especially to taste some of the desserts!

All is not well in the world for Jess, though, as she hears that her grandmother’s care home, Willow Court, has been sold and the residents will have to find alternative accommodation. As the festive season approaches, Jess endeavours to ensure the Willow Court residents have a fabulous festive party and to find a lovely new home for her gran……. As her flatmate and best friend Oliver and her new friend Nik both help her, will Jess also find love this Christmas – and if so, who with?

The residents at Willow Court are absolutely amazing characters with some really fun personalities amongst them and there is a definite sense of community throughout the story. Buddy also deserves a huge mention – and a doggy treat – for his role in the story. This is a fun, festive read and a lovely, heartwarming story to escape into.

Thanks to the publishers for my copy of this book which I have voluntarily read and honestly reviewed.

The Winter We Met is the perfect read to curl up by the fire (or just on the sofa) with, with a hot chocolate or tea and some biscuits by your side, and to forget the outside world for a few hours. This is the kind of feel-good book that makes you happy on dreary and dark rainy days, the kind that makes your heart feel all warm and content.

I was so excited to read this book, the second I had laid my eyes upon this gorgeous cover! If it doesn’t ooze cosyness, warmth, and festive love then I don’t know what does! I raced through this book in a day. From the first page on I was hooked on Jess’s story. She meets Nik on a flight back home to England from a toy fair in Germany. This beginning reminded me a bit of a Sophie Kinsella book and I was in love already.

This heart-warming, cosy feel-good read is perfect for this time of year. I loved it from beginning to end, and can only recommend it to everyone who loves a good romance and festive read! Definitely a 5 star read for me!

Winter is the time when I actively look for and read romance novels. I picked this book because it was one of the few ebooks available (i.e. not borrowed by someone else) in my city library, had a good rating on Goodreads, and had a decent length. In spite of the fact that this book has an average rating of 4/5 on Goodreads, I found it dull and boring. It was a struggle to get through the first half. I don't like abandoning books that I am reading, so I plodded on, hoping that it will get better. The second half managed to be less boring than the first one, enough to make me keep reading without groaning in frustration. I rolled my eyes too many times while reading this book, and THAT is not a good sign. It is also overly long, and I am pretty sure the length could be condensed to 3/4th of what it is currently. The sneak peek into the lives of care home residents was nice, and the characters in the care home were a little interesting. Apart from that, I don't have a lot of pleasant things to say about this book. I rate this book 2.5 stars, but since Goodreads only allows integer rating, I am marking it 2/5 on here.

It started well, with a nice meet-cute and the toy shop business providing a welcome variation. But this soon became only a side note, and the main story shifted to the retirement home of Jess' gran. Which was still fine with me, I liked the characters and I find it important to focus on them in books as well - because we all get old and are maybe faced with the problems Alice and her fellow lodgers have.

But just as Oliver, I found Nik too good to be true, and not even any 'explanation' at the end could convice me that this whole thing could really happen. Him doing everything he did out of purely altruistic reasons. It was way too far-fetched.
I also got a bit bored in the middle, with all the detailled planning but not much happening...

However, the business idea that Nik comes up with really sounds like something that is worth to be realised for real!

More than anything I enjoyed the portrayal of the residents in the care home as real people rather than stereotypes. Against this backdrop, we see charasmatic Nik winning the residents over but is there more to him than meets the eye? After all, Jess met the Australian on a flight and knows litle about him. Will her flatmate's concerns prove to be unfounded or not? As the events play out during the preparations for a residents' Christmas party before the home closes, we wonder if there will be a happy ending, as someone may be left very disappointed if Nik turns out to be a conman. Lovely, Christmassy feel in this gentle read.

The Winter We Met by Samantha Tonge is a Christmas story tight after my heart!

I did love the part about the care home of the grandma closing, and how the seniors were still treated with respect. So often old people are written like they are stupid or more like a nuisance to care about. So I always enjoy it if a book actually includes them well!

The love story and friendship were also enjoyable, especially as they felt very satisfying, but not as predictable as they often are. Plenty of great people and a warm and cosy feel to it, while still having a bit of depth to it, though on the mostly cosy side.

4,5 stars!

2 1/2, elevated to 3.

I had high hopes for this story. It started well and with a strong romance, but later on something happens that I didn't particularly like. I'd say it's more of women's fiction with a romantic subplot than a romance.

There's a fun cast of secondary characters with a lot of quirks and a message of kindness. The It's a Wonderful Life theme for the party at the care home was sweet to read.

The ending felt a bit rushed.

I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.

This is a lovely Christmas read with a very strong sense of community and connections.
There is an ongoing romantic dilemma and some family issues to contend with, but most of the action centres around a care home where the residents find support from an unusual source which brings them together and makes this an exceptionally uplifting read.
There is an abundance of festive spirit and wonderful scene-setting with the traditional seasonal preparations and what will stay with me is the camaraderie between the residents and carers who prove that supporting and showing kindness to others is the best Christmas gift of all.
