Tim was handicapped in every way, having been born with no legs and from a mother who was retarded. Raised by an old-fashioned grandmother, he was hidden from society. But then he meets Sandy, a 70-year-old tireless, weather-beaten loner who owns a wooden sailboat. Soon the two become close friends, as they enjoy a peace together neither of them have experienced. The bond prompts Tim to open up his life, discussing his emotions, fears and the psychological problems connected with his deformity. Both Tim and Sandy find mates, and the two couples find they share similar interests and philosophies – despite the 50-year age difference. The four have thoughtful concern for each with emotional, often humorous dialogue that substantiates that not only can they live in each other’s company – they prefer no other.
