My name’s Mags. I’m a merc. Once a year, I host a charity event. No grand balls. No silent auctions. No buffet line. Fark, I really need a buffet. And a bar.... Ahem, kinda got off topic there. So, charity event. Like I said, no fancy crap. Instead, I arm myself to the teeth and go into the most benighted parts of the pestilential sewer that is the megacity known as the Barrington Free Zone. From there, I pluck a child or two out of hell. Today is the day.
William R. Humble is a native Texan who’s been writing for longer than he feels comfortable admitting. Though he’s dabbled in other literary areas, his love of speculative fiction keeps drawing him back. Despite his cats often objecting to him spending so much time writing, he's gonna keep on keeping on. He's stubborn that way.
I can't say I have personal experience with mercenaries, but if I did...Mags would be my first choice to save my backside. Strong personality and spot-on hilarious inner dialog make for a furiously quick read. Immersive and Foxtroting fun!
If you are looking for an adventure where everything goes wrong, this is it. The charity event is not anything remotely like what I expected. Mags is a mercenary, not a debutante, and the event itself goes contrary to expectations at every turn.
It's a fast story with more action than character development, but it serves it's purpose to introduce the world of the Barrington Free Zone, and to whet this reader's interest in the soon to be realeased novel, The Barrington Job.
