I've been doing a lot of ARCs lately, so I wanted something that would be a quick read with a lot of smut, and this definitely fit the bill. The book is mostly as described, but there is more of a relationship between the MCs than the blurb sounds before it all goes wrong.
I usually don't criticize the not using a condom thing, but in this case, dude is a doctor (who is literally building a healthcare empire bc he cares about healthcare for all), and at no time did he ask if the h was on any form of birth control, not to mention the fact that there are things called STDs that doctors are very well aware of. Their "breakup" situation was pretty dumb Also, apparently he is not good at math bc when the h shows up in labor, he doesn't make the connection to what he was doing with her 9 months before. Also, at the end of the book, it promotes the next one in the series which is totally normal, but
But it satisfied the smutty, mindless read I was in the mood for and I knew what I was getting into, so I would rate it as an okay read if you are in the right frame of mind and don't expect the MCs to act with any intelligence.
Plot --- 2/5 Main Characters --- 2/5 Supporting Cast --- 2/5 Steam Level* --- 4/5 Violence --- nothing graphic (H fights off a mugger, but no one really gets hurt) Language --- 20-somethings, so some POV --- Dual
*Note that steam level is not a rating so much as a how hot was it: 0/5 - clean; 1/5 - mild (nothing descriptive); 2/5 - 3rd base action/1 home run; 3/5 - now we're getting somewhere (a couple of full-on steamy scenes); 4/5 - yes please! (erotica territory); 5/5 - they did EVERYTHING in this one, y'all
I had to delete my old college Amazon account because of a Mercury retrograde snafu, so I tried to read this before my Amazon account closed. Now I only have one Amazon account...
I didn't think of this while I was reading this, but now that it's over I'm wondering why they never used condoms or discussed birth control? He was a literal doctor, lol. What would have made more sense was if the condom had ripped or something, or in her stress, she forgot to take the birth control pill one day. I'm surprised no alpha/beta reader or editor picked up on that.
The accidental pregnancy and secret baby only came in at the end. It frustrated me when the heroine, Annie, wouldn't even let Duncan explain himself over the phone why he stood her up. (His adopted father had a heart attack.) That leads to a nine-month separation, where of course, she's pregnant with her baby. It was cute that he got to deliver their kid. How many dads can say that?
Blurb: Annie meets Duncan. He seems like the perfect catch till she realizes that he's her ex's half-brother and that he hid this from her. Not gonna lie, but if a guy was that into me he set up our whole meeting, I'd be like 😏 into that kind of obsession (if I liked him back, of course).
I wish Duncan would have met his biological mom on-page instead of off. That would have been more interesting. The beginning of the epilogue made me think Annie was walking down the aisle lol. The very last lines were too cookie-cutter ("everything was perfect" --something like that).
This might sound weird, but the hero reminded me of myself. Like our thought processes about lying. Though I definitely wouldn't want to work on the weekends.
A good steamy (though one scene was too long for me, and I grew slightly bored/almost skimmed) read but nothing too memorable or anything that wowed me. I was thinking to myself while reading that this could be a Harlequin. The way the author went with the hero and heroine's careers were interesting, though. This book also had 4-5 typos.
My favorite part of the book were the stethoscope chapter ornaments at the top. They looked great!
I decided to read this book as it was recommended to me on Kindle Store and this kind of thing never seems to fail me - well very rarely. If I could rate this zero stars then I really would. The author will blank out a letter in a word that really doesn’t need blanking out. Surely readers are used to these kind of words. She even blanks out a letter for when using a swear word. Tbh which books these days don’t have sex scenes or swear words and she just doesn’t like to use the words properly. I have up after page 3 and that never happens, it wasted my time and effort. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but don’t waste your time reading this book.
This is a small town/big city romance, with great chemistry between the characters, and an abundance of steam.
I could not put this book down. KC Crowne has a unique writing style. I will be checking out KC Crowne’s other books because this book was so good! I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a relatable romance.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Doctor's Secret was a pretty easy book to devour. In it, you will meet Annie and Duncan. Now these two had a weird relationship. Mostly because Annie used to date Duncan's younger brother Andrew. He also doesn't exactly tell her that he knows who she is until they run into Andrew. Which, yes, was super awkward.
I honestly think that Annie was better off after Andrew dumped her. I mean, the connection and chemistry were a lot stronger and better with Duncan in my opinion. Especially when it came down to those steamy and romantic scenes between them.
While they were cute with one another, I just knew that the drama was going to come quick and fast. After that, the characters didn't make the best decisions to diffuse the situation either. He left for freaking Africa, and she sort of realized she was pregnant.
Lots happened towards the end of the book. I'm glad that they are together and happy, but I did laugh out loud when he came back from Africa to find out she was pregnant with his baby. Ya know, while delivering that said baby.
Duncan knew what he wanted and was determined to win the love of Annie. There was one catch, she was his brother’s ex. Annie fell head over heels for Duncan. It was a bumpy road however, the heart knows what it wants. There was no denying their love for one another
Okay, let me just say this right now… if you are going to label your book a secret baby romance, don’t have the baby part at the like 95% part. There was nothing even about babies until that point. She basically breaks up with him over a miscommunication, then the book flashes forward 9 years later when he returns from Doctors Without Borders and he ends up delivering their baby. The story never talks about how she found out or how she even felt about it. She just shows up at his place with contractions. Has the baby and says it’s yours. He wraps his head around it and decides he wants to be in both their lives. He just forgives her for everything. The end. Ugh.
Disliked: - breaking the bro code.. with his actual half brother -the spelling errors -the insta love the H has for the h before he even meets her
Also, I was not a fan of the way the sex scenes were written. The dirty talk was subpar at best. I was really disappointed all around in this story as a whole.
Brother drama with amazing chemistry. I felt for Annie and Duncan as well. I understood why he kept the secret but also kept screaming at my Kindle for him to spit it out already. Nothing good ever comes from not being honest. The tension between then was palpable and I couldn't put this down.
So this was a first for me by K.C. Crowne and it really baffled the hell out of me as to why I picked this one up to read. Well, I guess it looked interesting, the description kind of drew me, and it was a quick read. But after reading this story, all I can say is it was a bit smutty, lusty and a bit boring. First of all, to knowingly go after your brother's ex is quite tabu but I guess if he's a step... it doesn't matter. Bedding on the first date...hmm let me think when you don't know a darn thing about the guy except that he looked handsome in a well-tailored suit and came to your rescue. I would be suspect.
Way later in the story, after all revealed and said and done, I was a little peeved with the h as she did not even give the H and opportunity to explain his "no show" which would have been a valid reason and not something to just break up over. In addition, as a doctor I would not have been so devastated of what happened to my father and the break up would sure as hell not have me flying off to African when I am trying to expand my practice with qualified other doctors counting on me as the head.
One thing is for sure...the plot of the secret pregnancy should not have come as a surprise...there was not secret. He was after all a doctor and she should have had more sense to know that a baby can be produced when neither of characters bring up the idea of using a condom when you know you would be getting your groove on and banging the headboard. Just banged away and never thought of the consequences of not using protection. Definitely not a secret.
This is a series and at the end it eluded to a best friend and the H's step-brother and another pregnancy. Not sure if I want to go down that alley if it is going to be plotted in the same fashion.
The characters are engaging and enjoyed the story for the most part.... However the storyline if cute ... Sadly this book needs a proofer or better editing due to many discrepancies in events happening ... for example >>> she does a job interview that includes her playing the violin which she wasn't expecting...but later in the book she pulls out her dust covered violin case to play the violin...something she hadn't done in years, ......or making a point to meet at a coffee cafe so no alcohol is involved yet they meet with her sitting in a bar drinking a martini, or at the end when there the men look so much alike they could be twins.... Yet she never saw the image of Andrew when she met Duncan ?? The whole idea is of her not knowing they were related... her ex and the dr who has desired her since seeing pictures of her.....
AS to the story ...Duncan Pitt,dr extrordinaire .......Andrew’s older long-lost brother, confirmed with Andrew that he had broken up with Annie, Duncan knew he had to meet her. They met when Duncan rescued her from a persistent man making unwanted advances in a coffee shop. Duncan was a confident, successful, good-looking doctor who had many medical clinics providing quality care. He and Annie had sizzling chemistry and he asked Annie out on a date. Although he was aware that Annie was his younger brother’s ex-girlfriend, having seen her pictures in social media, he didn’t tell her that he was Andrew’s stepbrother. The two of them were in a good relationship – until Annie learned the truth and knew he had deceived her.....a twisted path of love as Annie is challenged...love plays games by offering her two delectable choices—older brother—a successful doctor, or younger brother—a lawyer just beginning his practice. Both have possibilities, but only one brother can win the girl’s heart! Don't get me wrong the book was a cute fun read and the HEA is what we all wanted anyway :)
Girl supports boyfriend through law school, then the moment he passes the bar he devotes his time to his job and dumps his long term girlfriend. So she moves out and starts a new life for herself. She meets a doctor and all seems fresh and new only it's not. her ex Andrew used her to advance his career and Duncan well, doctor dish is a liar and absolutely horrid to his brother. So from my point of view she doesn't need either man. I wish I could love the characters but they all seemed flawed and self serving. I do know no one is perfect but Andrew it was all about status and money, Duncan it was all about possessing, manipulation and getting what he wants whatever the cost, regardless of who he hurts along the way. Annie had no self respect and was a wet tissue.
Well written with an ok plot but I really wanted characters that you formed an emotional connection to, sadly the wasn't the case. There's plenty of sex scenes and little bits of romance. It will appeal to some but I like my romances with characters that leap off the page and emotional rollercoasters that punch you in the gut.
There are also too many loose ends, i.e. Meeting mum and lawsuit.
HEA Standalone, interconnected theme in series Surprise baby, ex's brother *over 18 readers only *
Trigger warnings Mugging at knifepoint Adoption Mild dominance Heart attack
Andrew broke up with Annie causing her to pack up her life and move out of town. She ends up in White Pines, a town his long-lost brother lives in. Her moving there was her own decision, as Andrew had never included her in his dealings with Duncan. But Duncan knew about Annie, he coveted her from afar for over a year. A chance run-in with her at her favorite coffee shop was all it took for him to weasel into her life. He took steps to ensure she didn't know about his connection to her ex until he was ready to let them meet. She knew something had to be wrong as perfect as he was, but she never could have imagined this. His lies keep stacking up and its only a matter of time before it all blows up in his face, worse than the meeting ever could have. And if Andrew has his way, Annie will be his again. Who will she choose?
By 65% or so of the book, I was ready to really dislike Duncan and not root for him. I had to make myself finish the book, just to see if he was as good at groveling as he was lying.
Duncan met Annie by chance in a coffee shop. Annie was the ex of Duncan's 1/2 brother. Duncan knowing who Annie was but didn't tell her who he was. When their relationship got serious he still didn't tell her until he was forced. Annie was devastated and broke off the relationship. After a couple of weeks, they agreed to meet to work things out. Just before Duncan was to meet with Annie, his dad had a heart attack and was rushed to the hospital. When he was able to talk to her she refused to listen to him explain. Heart broken, Duncan left the country to get his self together. Annie was aware of her pregnancy until after he left. The rest of the story was HEA. Finding love after being used by her ex Andrew, who was Duncan's half brother, she stayed with him regardless how he treated her, but with Duncan, who treated her like a queen, she ran everytime there was a problem. Refusing to hear his explanation. I thought her friend Gia, didn't like the ex because he was insecure and selfish??? Did I miss something?
He found her picture on his brother's social media and wished she was his. She had moved to a new city to escape her ex. They met at a coffee shop. A guy was hitting on her and wouldn't take no for an answer and he pretended to be her boyfriend to get the guy to leave. The only problem was her ex was his brother and he had hoped that the information wouldn't push her away. The introduction of his brother was not a well thought out plan and she fled. Her sister read her mind and suggested that they talk to clear the ait and once they were supposed to meet, his adopted father had a heart attack. That left her thinking she didn't need a man in her life. When she told him it was over he went out of the country for awhile. She was pregnant ant he was clear across the globe so they didn't speak. When she was about to give birth there was an accident on the expressway so her friend took her to his house as she was in labor with no way to the hospital, she told him that it was his as soon as the baby was delivered. Great story in the series
This book had an interesting story. I read it all the way to the end and enjoyed it. It could’ve been better, but I’m not picky. However, there were so many mistakes throughout the entire book. It started with her friend having black hair on one page and blonde hair two pages later. They even inserted a chapter in the wrong place. She was going to her parents before Christmas for a visit, and then she was back and with her boyfriend. Then, she’s at her parents house and we’re going through the whole scene there. It was said in that chapter that they’d only been on one date, but they’d been on two. That’s when I realized that the chapter was inserted in the middle of two other chapters where she was with him the entire time. There were many, many other mistakes. I would think that if one person sat and read the whole book and informed the author, then it could’ve been reduced to just minor infractions. Does she not have an early readers club?
Had the potential to be a great book but too many continuity errors to overlook like when she does a job interview that includes her playing the violin which she wasn't expecting, but later in the book she pulls out her dust covered violin case to play the violin...something she hadn't done in years, or making a point to meet at a coffee cafe so no alcohol is involved and when they meet she is sitting in a bar drinking a martini, or at the end when there is the thought that the men look so much alike they could be twins....really? The whole premise is her not knowing they were related. These examples and more added up to too much to overlook. I actually submitted the errors in the book to the editor or however that works. I actually read this book because I was interested in a different book in the series so I decided to start at the beginning. I'm done, I won't read any further if this is how they're written.
I was homesick for Denver so why not try a new series set in Denver? However this book is just Denver adjacent - White Pines? Which I’m gonna guess is really Evergreen. Also ranch-style homes in Cherry Creek? Um no. CC is big houses and big $$$$$. Try a mile or 2 south in Glendale.
Anywho-the story. Where to start. I haven’t been this annoyed with a book in what a week maybe? The H & h date for maybe 2 or 3 weeks? During which time the H is a huge f’n liar. Not only does he lie to the h, he lies to his half-bro. I was totally on the h’s side when she’s like nope peace out dude but her sis & BFF are all like he lurrrrve you. NO! Then she’s gonna go and lie right back about getting knocked up.
Somewhere along the way a story line about an employee incident pops up but goes nowhere - also see my notes on that situation.
Yes, there is some good smut along the way. HEA? Sure - these 2 shitheads deserve each other so that they don’t further pollute the dating pool
What a wonderful start to the series. First of all Duncan is a man all of us women wish we could have in our lives. Not only is he extremely gorgeous, he’s a very well-known doctor. And if that wasn’t enough, he is kind, gentle, funny, and just everything a woman would want in a man. But Duncan only has eyes for Annie. They hit it off right at the beginning and they’re perfect together. She sometimes thinks it’s just too good to be true. There is one big secret that Duncan is now afraid to tell her that it will change everything. Duncan is Annie’s self absorbed, egotistical, selfish ex. Through lying, lack of communication, and trying to escape by working for Doctors without Borders, the next time they see each other could prove to be extremely intense. Annie now has some thing she needs to tell Duncan. I love this book. The characters are well described, the writing just flows throughout the book. And there is that happily ever after that I always want.
3.5 of 5 stars The story overall was pretty good, but that ending felt super rushed. I almost wished some of the epilogue stuff had been cut out just to give us more development with them getting back together. Because that’s the part that I felt was kind of rushed through. Don’t get me wrong, it was an entertaining story and I enjoyed it. And I would check out other books by this author. But for a story that I felt was well developed and maybe comparatively speaking over developed for like 85% of the book, the last 10-15% felt like a rushed through patch them back together job and the secret baby part of this story was barely a blip in the storyline. I wanted it to be much more of a factor when I’m looking for a secret baby romance. This one didn’t really fit that bill for me. But it’s definitely some fun other romance tropes. And as far as the title, Doctor’s Secret, it was definitely all about that.
Why do I keep reading KC Crowne books? The story blurbs hit my favorite tropes, but the writing and character development miss every time.
Lovely story premise.
But story jumps around with big plot holes, and then rapidly wraps up. In this case with supposed HEA with her best friend and her AH ex who also happens to be new lover's half brother. Gross.
And we're led to believe with no co text that he'll just leave after major medical incident with his dad and misunderstanding with woman he supposedly loves? And he'll stay gone exactly the length of a pregnancy? And no one will mention she's pregnant while he's out of country even though he maintained contact with several who know her and know she's pregnant? And The day he's back in US, she's in active labor imminently delivering and shows up at his house to deliver?
Just ridiculous. But dammit I finished it to see if it'd get better. It didn't.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Besides the weird apostrophes used only at the beginning of the story in the dirty and curse words (I think it's typos?) I think the story is well-written and easy to follow along. I typically am not a fan of stories where communication or lies could be easily handled, but aren't and I think that applies to this story too. My biggest pet-peeve though is
Had the potential to be a great book. The characters are engaging and enjoyed the story for the most part....but too many continuity errors to overlook like when she does a job interview that includes her playing the violin which she wasn't expecting...but later in the book she pulls out her dust covered violin case to play the violin...something she hadn't done in years, or making a point to meet at a coffee cafe so no alcohol is involved and when they meet she is sitting in a bar drinking a martini, or at the end when there is the thought that the men look so much alike they could be twins....really? The whole premise is her not knowing they were related. These examples and more added up to too much to overlook. Fix these one line errors in the story here and there and could be a great story.
Yeah no, this was a long winded book for no reason, if they made love in front of a fireplace one more time!!! Annie moves to a small city to get away from Andrew her ex,she meet Duncan who is his half brother, Duncan knows of Annie, but Annie doesn’t know of him. They date, he keeps the secret, he have them meet up so Annie can meet his brother. 83% Into the book 9 months later Annie is giving birth at Duncan house abs of course Andrew is there visiting, Duncan just returned from Africa. This book was took much and how many Christmas did this book have? I swear it seemed like they had two or three.. if you like harlequin romance novel, you might enjoy this
Not a great book. The doctor didn't know he even had a younger brother since he was put up for adoption before his birth mother got married and had another son. Yet the author keeps saying the phrase "let you back into my life". One he was never in before his younger brother found him. The ending sucks. In the description it says the doctor finally showed up to deliver his baby. Wrong. The girlfriend is the one who is showing up ready to deliver a baby he doesn't know about. Then it just ends there. Even before she gets to his apartment to deliver. Worst ending ever. Typos need to be cleaned up also.
Doctor's Secret is the first book in the Doctor's Babies series by KC Crowne. I have read a number of KC Crowne's books over the last year or so but this one was just not for me I am sorry to say. It is well written but the story-line and characters were just not connecting with me very much. I just kept thinking that if I was the h I would run as far and and fast as I could from both men in her life as she is way better off without either of them, including doctor baby daddy.
I received a copy of this book and am leaving my honest review. My opinions are all my own.
I love secert pregnancy books but this book I am confused. So Annie and andrew is dating they break up.then his brother Duncan pursues her even tho she doesn't know they are brothers. She finds out they break up she realizes she is pregnant.9 months later the book comes to the end. Duncan and Annie reconnect realize they are still in love have the baby. Annie's best friend Gia and Andrew fall in love and get engaged. Wonderful story so skip to upcoming books Annie's best friend gia finds love with a doctor. And in that book andrew is never mention. Please dont waste your time.
Good story but needs editing and not just grammar.
Story line was good, but editing definitely needed. And not just grammer. On the 1st page of the 1st chapter her best friend Gia has dark curls when viewed through the door prep hole. Then in next paragraph her BLIND curly hair comes though the door. Things like that. At the end notes bff is happily engaged and hints there is a bun in the oven. Then blurb about next book says bff has a surprise baby with a doctor. (Engagement was NOT with a doctor). Please, please keep your characters consistent. It is very confusing to the readers.
I had expected from the blurb that the good Dr would be on shift at the hospital when she was brought in having his baby. Nope it spent ages describing dates together, pea coats, all the time with the pea coats. Just to randomly put the birth in at the end. I liked the build up and the story in general just not the way the ending was rushed and engineered to fit in the birth to randomly. Otherwise a good story. This is my opinion, I would still, recommend this book and ask others to make up their own minds.
