Karen and Richard's wedding day is supposed to be a joyful occasion, a time of new beginnings, a coming together of friends old and new.
But one of those present brings with her a dark and terrible secret, one that has lain hidden too long in the past. And for some, the celebration turns into a nightmare.
Grant lives with his partner in a small seaside town on the east coast of England not unlike the Elders Edge he writes about. The major difference between the two being that Elders Edge has a higher murder count.
When he's not dreaming up new ways to kill people, he relaxes by stargazing in the early hours.
Third in the series and by far the best! Nathan and Mikey (I hate he uses Mikey!) are now settled in a home and getting along for the most part. But of course, this being Elders Edge, there is another murder and Mikey is at the center! Some of the characters are the usual friends from prior books but of course a few new ones are added to the mix.
The best aspect of this series is the relationship between the two men. It has grown and shifted from the first one book considerably and in a very realistic manner. They aren't happily ever after just yet, Mikey is still a bit unstable and erratic, constantly questioning himself and Nathan, without any real evidence. I truly hope he is seeing a therapist since he desperately needs one! Nathan is the rock....solid, stable., secure, honest, and consistent. He puts up with Mikey's tantrums and hissy fits, sometimes you just feel sorry for him and wish he had a better partner! But of course, they have such a long history from teen years and Nathan is just so loyal it will never happen. But you do get a feeling they might be better off with different partners sometimes, so much less drama and history that way.
But I digress....... rant has gotten far better with his plots with this one being the most complex and fascinating. Of course, it revolves arounds the past coming back to the forefront unexpectedly and causing an explosion of emotions. These books are almost "cozy" in that the deaths aren't performed in our sight and are not particularly grisly. It's all about the character and the reason behind the deaths.
The plot here is the best of all three and it truly impressed me. I was almost at the end when I guessed the killer but not the full reason.
You probably should read at least book one to get the most enjoyment but could skip book two if you really wanted to. But jumping into this one without previous awareness blunts some of the impact.
I look forward to the next one and visit Elders Edge once again along with Grant.
I always enjoy reading British/English authors for the spellings and just general tone of their writing, as I am Scot, but, ironically, a college English teacher.
Having said that, this is a complex mystery/detective story and keeps you guessing throughout. However, there is little, if any, romantic connection between the two MC's. There is a hint of some previous connection, and a few hints of "glad I/you came back to me", but you're on your own besides that. Looking for sex? I think the word penis is mentioned twice and one time--once--we are told one of the two has green eyes. Some physicality would be nice, even in a M/M mystery yeah?
Since I started with book 3, apparently there were previous stories to clue me in to these two, but the reviews for books 1 & 2 sort of swayed me away. I guess I'll try but this one didn't convince me.
I’ve been enjoying these books. Good plot and reasonably good story. The main character, however, doesn’t grip me fully. He’s supposed to be the expert but misses so much, only seeing things when the subject is being interviewed. And so much baggage. He feels like a real character but he needs therapy, and quick. Hopefully that’ll happen in future books. His constant introspection is daunting.
I absolutely love this series and to see things through Mike's eyes as he analyzes behavior, it's fascinating. So happy to see how Nathan and Mikey's relationship is growing and I really hope that Mikey can forgive himself for his past mistakes... We can see Nathan has.. Another great whodunit, cannot wait for the next book
Thoroughly enjoyed this fast moving murder mystery. There's not an awful lot of descriptive padding, but sometimes you just want to be thrown straight into the action.
Really good mystery. The best of the three books I've read in this series. It looks like the author has abandoned this series which is too bad. I would like to have read more from him. I haven't seen anything else he's written since this book so he may not be writing any more.
Another good mystery in EldersEdge. Mikey and Nathan are fairly strong now and develop further as Mikey learns to resist his TSTL moments. I did get a feel for Enjoyed a lot
I found the book and enjoyable read: A cosy? The characters are interesting and the plot was intriguing. Even though this was the third novel in this series, it felt fresh and new. Couldn’t put it down.
With all 3 books in the series, it's a pleasure to have two flawed characters fight and love it out in a small town police procedural. Each story comes with a twist. Looking forward to the next one.
A continuation of Nathan and Mikey’s story, this deals with the death of a woman from their past who came back home for Karen and Richard’s wedding. Excellent characters and intriguing plot twists.
