Impossibly Fond

Rate this book
When a hostile leprechaun forces an inept wizard to flub the spell he’s casting on a mini-giant, the result can only be… fondness? Waltham has accidentally spelled Ian into liking him, and now his hostage/windfall, aka Mindy, insists he fix it before she’ll turn over the pot of gold she rightfully owes him.

Waltham’s figure is as stringy as his hair, and his words are as sharp as his nose. He’s a selfish, greedy fledgling wizard with a ratty hat and a worse attitude. There’s no way someone as handsome and kindhearted as Ian would like him without magic in play. But as the three reluctant companions set out on a quest to assemble the ingredients for an anti-spell, a different kind of magic happens. Ian’s unflagging belief that Waltham is worthy of love makes Waltham begin to wish it were true.

There are grasshopper gonads to be collected, moonbeam crystals to be harvested, kitten tears to be wrung, and somewhere, at the end of the rainbow, a pot of gold to be collected. But if Waltham can overcome his upbringing and mend his ways, then maybe—once the spell has been lifted—something real will remain.

So much fun! This book is a hilarious take on the typical high fantasy adventure grouping off on a quest.

In this instance, it's an obnoxious (on the surface) but not very good wizard, a feisty female leprechaun with a secret and a galoot (a somewhat shorter type of giant).

Throw in a cow which has been spelled to move quickly, a kitten thoroughly deserving of the name Diva, a misplaced spell, a single storey castle with four turrets, a missing pot of promised gold and you get this absolutely delightful book.

I'd love to read more from this unlikely bunch of adventurers.

#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review.

Waltham is a wizard, sort of (without a decent hat or much magic). Mindy is a particularly ugly leprechaun, vaguely resembling a pig, (with wings) in a tutu. Ian is a galoot, a sub species of giant (seemingly not too bright, or really big, just large) Waltham isn’t aware of Ian’s specialness yet. A spell goes wrong and Ian becomes fond (impossibly fond) of Waltham.

Dragging the leprechaun around looking for her pot of gold and a big, very fond, galoot is not how Waltham imagined his wizarding life going at all. Throw in a cow and a kitten and the story became improbable (it wasn’t before, really, No really)!

Funny, sweet, kinda hot, funny. Very bewitching, entrancing ( might be the same thing) characters. The writing and the story were very cheeky (but well done!!). Ian was perfect, Mindy and Waltham were both annoying but I felt the urge to squeeze hug them. Diva wasn’t very realistic, (sorry you pretty, precious kitty on your purple pillow), only kidding.

I am impossibly fond of this book and it’s Cover.

I received an arc of this book.

A wizard, a Galoot and a Leprefae enter in a tavern… and hell breaks loose!
Waltham is a wizard down on his luck… which obviously has nothing to do with the fact that he skipped most of his lessons in the Academy and decided to end his apprenticeship way before it was due… but his luck is about to change, as he’s managed to snatch a Leprechaun… or something like that, as Mindy has pink wings and a very annoying personality. When a spell gone wrong turns a handsome Galoot (a mini-giant), Ian, into his biggest fan, Mindy’s annoying personality reminds Waltham that he has to correct it, because there is no way somebody as nice as Ian would be as fond as somebody as unpleasant as Waltham. But to do so, the three of them have to spend some time trying to find grasshopper’s gonads, kitten tears and other crazy stuff. And in that time, Waltham realises that he would love to be the wonderful person Ian sees when he looks at him. Too bad, as soon as the lifts the spell, all that fondness is going to be gone… or is it?
So this was a fantastic read. So fresh and funny. The dynamics between the three characters is really hilarious sometimes. I loved every single one of them. And then Diva arrived and I was completely sold.
I had never read anything by Tanya Chris before, but I will certainly read more of her stories
Very recommendable

A Joyfully Jay review.

3.75 stars

Impossibly Fond is a fun, playful, and often silly story that I enjoyed. I think you have to be in the mood for this style of humor for this book to work for you, and I’ll admit, it took me a bit to really sink into it. The start was a little rough for me as Waltham isn’t the easiest guy to like, and the instant way Ian falls for him made it hard to connect with them as a couple for me. But Tanya Chris really develops this one nicely, highlighting the growth Waltham undergoes over the course of the book and really bringing it all together so well.

M/M Fantasy Romance

2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣0️⃣ 🅁🄴🅅🄸🄴🅆 (edited)
Early on I thought often about dnf'ing, but I pressed onward. The more I read, the more it grew on me. I became fond of the story, but not "impossibly" so. 😏

An original story with unconventional characters. I've come to value originality, as many books are bland and forgettable. This fairytale offers a good moral but is too adult for children.

Every time I think or hear of "boning," I will remember this book. Too funny! I found myself smiling or chuckling while reading. 🤣

By the end, misfits Waltham, Ian, and Mindy form a happy family. Mindy, Walt's initially unwanted sister, is hilariously snarky and steals the show. Ian, a gentle non-giant, is sweet. Waltham's transformation after finding Ian who loved him wholeheartedly, along with Mindy's help, was wonderful to see.

🇲‌🇨‌🇸‌: (no ages given)
(POV) Waltham really wants to be a successful wizard.
Ian is a galoot, a short giant with a giant heart.
Mindy is a leprefae (half-leprechaun, half-fairy).

Waltham catches Mindy to get her pot of gold. Three days of wandering leads them to Ian's turrets. Not knowing how friendly Ian is, Walt casts an "Impossible to Flee Bond" spell on him. It backfires, turning into an "Impossibly Fond" spell. Ian is now devoted to Walt and refuses to leave him. Even though Mindy tells Walt that it's unethical to bone Ian, he still does.

So begins their adventure (often misadventure) to break the spell, while Walt still tries to get Mindy's gold. Hilarious hijinks happen.

Waltham believes the spell is the only reason Ian likes him, but after it breaks, he discovers Ian truly loves him. The author skillfully makes Walt unlikable at first. Watching him evolve into a decent person is one of the best parts. Learning about his past helped me to understand his character.

What's learned about Walt:

Ian is a gentle, teddy bear-like figure who teaches Walt and Mindy kindness. He often has to be the mediator, separating them like naughty children. 😆

5️⃣ STARS FOR:
☑️ a feel-good tale with humor
☑️ a heartwarming "moral of the story"
☑️ genuine character growth
☑️ distinctive & detailed characters
☑️ a satisfying ending

Why I didn't rate it 5-stars:
☹️ Waltham had sex with many men before meeting Ian and frequently thinks about it. He even nearly had sex with a man after boning Ian. His excessive lust was a turn-off.

🫣 Neither MCs is described as handsome; they're more comedic than sexy. Not wanting to read the detailed sex scenes, I skimmed them. It was sometimes referred to as F'ing.

😂 Ian really likes to be "boned."
“Waltham’s going to sleep with me tonight,” he announced to his parents. “He bones me.” Waltham turned away with a weak cough, sorry he’d ever taught Ian that word. They really needed to have a conversation about appropriate places to use it.

▪️ "...giants aren’t any better than you just because they’re taller. You don’t really believe that, do you, baby?”
▪️ “He calls me baby because of the boning,” Ian explained to his parents, cheering up quickly at the touch. “Not because he thinks I’m infantile.”

I had high hopes for this book, just based on the blurb, and I was not disappointed at all. It's incredibly sweet, but not so sweet that I wanted to gag. It's funny & clever & a great take on the fantasy quest trope. I'm also a sucker for misfit fantasy characters on quests, so perhaps I'm just a teensy bit biased. It's not a totally groundbreaking book of epic proportions, but it's lovely and entertaining.
The blurb really sets things up nicely, so I won't rehash any of the plot. I'll just say that I found the characters, even Waltham, who fronts like a jerk, and Mindy, who never fails to remind him of that, very likeable. There are lessons to be learned and it's not subtle, but I had no issue with the lack of subtlety. The world building is done in such a way that I could visualize so much of everywhere and everyone from the start.
This is the first book by Tanya Chris I've read, though I've had several on my TBR for some time. This book has assured me that I need to read those books ASAP.

‘Impossibly Fond’ is a fun, lighthearted, slightly steamy story that straddles the fence between fantasy and fairy tale. The story contains all the elements for fantasy – leprechauns, fairies, giants, magic, wizards, and more – while there is a definite moral to the tale.

The story is about Waltham – Walt – and the book blurb summarizes his personality right down to the attitude. Walt was not my favorite character. I found him a bit too self-centered, self-absorbed, and just not really a nice person. And I believe that is the impetus of the book; Walt has a bit of growing to do to get to that Happily Ever After.

Mindy was a hoot, a feisty leprechaun with secrets of her own. Ian was my favorite character – honest, astute, humorous, empathetic, and seriously, how can I not like a character who has his own castle complete with a cow and chickens? Ian and Mindy balance out Walt’s less than optimal attributes.

I noted in the first paragraph that this is a somewhat steamy book. I admit to being a bit surprised at how quickly our two male characters went from introductions to the sack. It does, however, set up the puns and witty comments for the remainder of the book. So worth it.

Ultimately, this is a light fantasy/fairy tale that is quick to read, has an interesting set of characters, a little moral to the story, and plenty of warm fuzzies to keep the pages turning.

Waltham is a tall, gangly, and inept wizard to cast the wrong spell on Ian, the groot (mini-giant), when he was trying to sneak into his castle to find his pot of gold. It turns out that he casted an Impossibly Fond spell and now Ian can't stop following him. Waltham has no choice but to bring him along while he is tethered to Mindy, the leprechaun/fae whose pot of gold he needs. They try to gather all the ingredients they need to undo the spell on Ian while trying to find Mindy's pot of gold. Along the way, they get into some really comical and hilarious adventures from dive-bombing grasshoppers, a cow that won't budget, and sleeping in webby places.

Waltham is a snarky, sarcastic, selfish and reedy wizard in training with a ratty hat and horrible attitude. He has a jaded view of the world based on his upbringing and he believed that everything you get in life has to be fought for and taken because nobody else will give it to you. Then he met Ian who is a kind-hearted, thoughtful, caring, and sweet Groot who does everything in his power to make Waltham happy. Along the way, Waltham finds himself wanting to change and be someone that Ian deserves. He does find his pot of gold in the end with Ian and they have their HEA.

Impossibly Fond was one of my favorite books by Tanya Chris with hilarious characters, a fantastic and magical world, and a HEA for everyone to enjoy. By far one of the funniest books I've ever read with wonderful characters and hilarious situations.

♥ Loved it!

Wow! This story was so unique. I love a good fantasy and Tanya Chris really did well with this one. I enjoed reading Waltham&Ian and Mindy's story. Ian is just too good for this world, he was such a cutiepie, the sunshine of this story. And Waltham, he was a really interesting character, but I liked seeing him through Ian's eyes.

Waltham was the center point of this story and his ability to perform magic, being a wizard. Mindy was a great side character, she had always the best thing to say and loved how cheeky he was with Waltham.

Ian, as I said was a marshmallow, you can only love him no matter what, and it was so lovely to see him being 'impossibly fond' of Waltham. Their relationship was really great, they have developed a lot and grew into their best self. I loved reading theis quest to find those things for the magic, every scene were cute and funny, and loved how Waltham fell in love more and more with Ian.

The best scene was the grasshopper hunt, it was more then hilarious. I laughed so hard. Waltham and his ignorance of things was so cute, especially when Ian knew things he didn't. They completed each other perfectly.

Really, really loved this story, I couldn't put it down and read it in one-go. It was so good to be in this world with Ian& Waltham. Highly recommend it.

Impossibly Fond
MMy Thoughts and Review:

This was a very clever Hero’s Journey Fantasy Story. I found the characters intriguing, especially Ian the galoot. The relationships that formed from the close proximity of the MCs went beyond romance and I appreciated that because it showed the characters’ relationship was fueled by substance and not just need (even though that was there in all its glory). 😜

The story was original, the characters were flawed, engaging, hilarious at times, and endearing at others. The world itself was detailed okay, but because the characters all the way down to Diva the kitten were so smartly imagined, it didn’t really matter much bout the landscape.

I thoroughly enjoyed taking this journey with Ian, the not so big galoot, Mindy, the half-breed leprechaun hostage, and Waltham, the “wizard of no importance whatsoever.” This was my first read by Tanya Chris, but I am totally getting more of their books after this.

I've been picking books lately that sound amazing, but when I read them they turn out to be am-eh....meh...zing instead. I loved this one though, and genuinely thought it was amazing, even though I don't generally like my fantasy books clocking in at under 300 pages, let alone 200! But for all that it was short, it really packed a punch of sweetness and humor. I loved Ian, that big (literal) galoot, even though I was picturing him as Ogre Doug from that kids show Wallykazam for a little while (which is soooooo disturbing). Waltham is less loveable, but that's the point, and he and Mindy together were hilarious. The two of them gave me some big belly laughs, and I liked that the humor was just naturally occurring instead of trying too hard to be zany or over the top as it can be sometimes. I've never read any of this author's work before, but I will definitely be checking it out now. I highly recommend this one.

I have known Tanya Chris from several shifter/fated mates/Alpha/Omega romances and have always found her world building amazing filled with characters I love and evil villainous characters I love to hate. This book sounded much lighter than those, even a bit zany. That is not my favorite "flavor" of story, but I decided to take a chance because one of the main romantic characters was described as rather unlovable at the beginning. If there is one romantic trope I adore it is the redemption story where a grouchy, unlikeable character finds love and happiness when confronted by one who is a kind, loving ray of sunshine. Chris hit a homerun with that trope here by adding in the complication that grouchy Waltham can't even trust that Ian's love is real because of a misdirected spell. Watching these two figure out what is real and can be depended on was such a sweet read. The magic world is fascinating and I hope to see more stories set here.

When a quirky and inept wizard, a determined, fiesty leprechaun and a hunky mini giant come together, it is a sure shot recipe for disaster!
Follow Waltham,Mindy and Ian on their unlikely quest to find grasshopper's gonads, kitten tears and other such ingredients as they try to fix a wonky spell.
As Waltham gets closer to fixing the spell, he fears that he would go back to being the pathetic, unloved wizard, but sometimes wishes do come true.

This was such a delightful and magical adventure. It was sweet, funny and exciting!
Waltham and Ian made such an unlikely, yet adorable couple, and I liked the dynamics between them.
Mindy was such a fierce and determined leprechaun hellbent on finding her pot of gold.
The world building was unique and engaging. The characters were well fleshed out and hilarious.I absolutely adored them.
Overall, a sweet, funny, quirky and adorable read. I was thoroughly entertained by this one.

Waltham accidentally spells Ian into being fond of him. And to make matters worse, the stinky little leprechaun that makes him flub his spell now won't give him his rightful pot of gold until he releases Ian from the same spell. Poor Waltham has never really had any friends and actually kind of likes having someone who wants to have him around but he really needs that gold. As the three of them go on an unlikely adventure to find the proper counterspell ingredients, he begins to realize that maybe he is tired of living the way he has been and just maybe he wants to be a better person/wizard. A cute story of bungling wizards, magic, and lovable galoots. And don't forget the grasshopper gonads.

Waltham had captured a leprechaun and intends to get his pot of gold as bounty but runs into Ian along the way. A spell runs amok thanks to Mindy and Waltham getting tangled up with each other making Ian impossibly fond of Waltham and so our adventure begins. Shenanigans aplenty and a trickster of a leprechaun make for some very interesting yet hilarious moments. Ian is positively charming despite being spelled and adorable when he tries to be stern, Waltham and Mindy stubbornly decide that Ian needs to be dispelled and their attempts to do so are filled with hilarity, snarkiness and fluffiness. A rather pleasant tale of friendship and the realisation of maybe what you were looking for was right in front of you all along, a very heartwarming conclusion.

I really enjoyed this fun, whimsical fantasy. The characters are interesting and so funny. After not-so-skilled wizard Waltham accidentally spells a mini-giant, Waltham, Ian (the mini-giant), and the leprechaun Mindy set off on a mad-cap mission to gather the ingredients for a counterspell. Along the way, Waltham finds he wants more than just Mindy's gold, he wants to be someone worthy of Ian's affection. I loved the way Ian's affections changed and improved Waltham. It was charming and very heart-warming. This book is a little like cotton candy, sweet, light and airy. It has snark, laughs, and no angst. Just a fun, unique little romance.

I loved it!

I loved reading Impossibly Fond by Tanya Chris. I fell in love with the cover, read the blurb and knew that I had to read it. I loved getting to watch Waltham's character develop from a selfish wizard to being happy with who he is and what he has and having the greatest gift of all, love. I also loved how Mindy ran circles around him. But my favorite character of all is the loveable Ian. He comes off as a little bit slow minded to begin with but as the story progresses we see that he is actually very smart and has lots of common sense and useful knowledge about other paranormal species. I loved how he helped Waltham see that he deserved to be loved. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.

Humorous fantasy novels are my jam, so I just knew I had to have this one; and it delivered on all fronts! Waltham doesn’t seem to have the best personality in the beginning, but it’s very easy to see that comes from him having had a rough life thus far, and it was definitely a means of protecting himself. It took an impossibly kind (and impossibly fond) galoot (half giant) named Ian to figure out who he really was inside.

Along with a leperfairy, the two of them have some absolutely zany adventures trying to work a counter spell; and it was an absolute delight to read. Very funny, very sweet, and just all around fun!

I love this author's books, especially when she writes light, funny stories. And let me tell you, Impossibly Fond was utterly delightful.

There were moments I was actually shaking with laughter because the cast of characters and their interactions were the best kind of fun. I loved how the crazy quest started out, how the eccentric group was thrown together and worked for a common goal. And Waltham and Ian were absolutely darn cute together.

This was an unique adventure, equal parts entertaining and emotionally touching. Just the perfect getaway from the real world into a fantasy one. Loved it!

I received an ARC edition of this book from the author.

This story took me a bit to get into. Waltham was not a very likeable character in the beginning, he was rather arrogant and inconsiderate at the start. It was really only as the story progressed that he really redeems himself. I was really unsure about Ian at first. Especially how he was acting while under the spell. But I think ultimately his fondness for Waltham was sweet in its own way. Mindy was a bit odd, but I think she fit with the overall plot of the book. There was a good bit of humor to the story, the craziness of the cast and some of the ridiculous situations really sold the story.

This was really silly in a good way and very sweet by the end. It took me a while to understand Waltham because his attitude was very much "I'm owed" at the beginning, but he slowly grows into the person he was meant to be with the guidance of Ian, and even Mindy. All the secondary characters are fun, the quest is ridiculously amusing, and the love story is adorable but meaningful as well. For a story that I was expecting to be played mainly for laughs there is a good amount of substance woven into the humor. It reminds me a bit of a book I love, Thick as Thieves by Tali Spencer, but with more goofiness.

I am rather quite fond of this book, which is not impossible at all. It is a magical adventure filled with comedy and boning. Waltham is a drop out wizarding student who has caught himself a leprechaun/fairy by the name of Mindy who is giving him the run around rather than her gold. Together, they meet Ian, a galoot of medium stature and eidetic memory, who accidently becomes ensorcelled by a miscast spell of Impossibly Fond. Is the attraction between Waltham and Ian real, or is it the magic? Well, time to go on a quest to gather the spell components to free Ian from the spell, and see if the feelings are really real. Such a funny and charming book. Greatly enjoyed.

Thank you for the ARC read, I voluntarily give this book an honest review.  A wizard with better than you attitude, Waltham is about to get more than he ever thought he was looking for. Holding a leprechaun hostage all for a gold, but Mindy isn't just what Waltham thinks. Always spoiling the mood after a spell went wrong, was he really at fault if Ian didn't move in time or his fault that her plump body had tripped him up. I loved this cute and hilariously funny tale of what gold could really look like, you just might miss it.

Impossibly Fond

I really must start this review by saying I absolutely enjoyed this book and found myself chuckling often. What I liked about it was seeing Waltham growing as a wizard and person. He starts out wanting one thing and learns there is more to life than just gold. He finds love and friendship when he least expects it. What I disliked was how he treated poor Mindy for most of the book 😆. Ok dislike isn't the right word...it annoyed me I will say. Overall this was a really cute book and I wouldn't mind reading more of Waltham and his strange adventures.

What happens when a dillweed of a wizard Waltham, who only thinks of himself and a cantankerous leprechaun Mindy, who has a secret, cast a gone awry spell on Ian the sweetest galoot? You get a sweet fluffy story about personal growth. This story is such fun and has plenty of hilarity especially the bickering between Waltham and Mindy. This is a well written book, which is what you would expect from this author. It is pure escapism and hopefully we get to see what adventures the three go on next.

This was super cute! At first, it came across as a little cheesy, but the characters quickly grew on me. Waltham was so unlikeable at the beginning that it made his transformation into someone I could cheer for even more satisfying. Ian was a little bland for me, but Mindy was such an awesome character and her banter with Waltham was very funny. The world-building was such perfect "fairy tale" that it made even the most over-the-top parts of the story seem absolutely reasonable. Highly recommended!

I loved when Waltham put Mindy in her place and explained his past and need for gold, not greed! Ian's body shaming lecture was sweet! Can we talk about the lack of boundaries and NO filter that Ian's parents
exhibited??!! Omg! I'm dead!! Heartwarming and humorous with a side order of steamy. Waltham learned some important lessons and what was important along his way to try to get his pot of gold!!!! Sweet conclusion.
This would be magical if it were made into an audiobook! I loved it.

Awww, I loved this book!
Who doesn't love, obnoxious, inept Wizards, devious Leprechauns and mini giants called Galoots!
A brilliant take on the quest story that you just need to read to thoroughly enjoy. And if that's not enough to convince you, then there's an adorable kitten,a cow that only has one speed and grasshopper gonads! What more could you want?
I have no hesitation in recommending you dive in and enjoy this brilliant story that, I for one, would love to read more of.

I think quirky is a good description of this story. It was a fun story to read. Waltham took a bit to get used to (I thought he was kind of a narcissist), but he and Mindy were hysterical together. I loved Ian! Ian seemed to simple, but he and Waltham were really perfect together!! I seriously loved and enjoyed this story!!
