Syn's Desires

Nothing can save me.
I’m caught in the Fates’ tangled web, and once they have you in their sights? There’s nowhere to hide. Those old crones are in a race with other murderous supernaturals to find the missing pieces, and I'm caught in the middle.
Running out of time, forsaken by everyone; even the god who created me.
But when I wash up on their shores, my fortunes might just be changing. These hunted men decided I'm theirs, that I belong with them, and they'll teach me to survive.
I'm destined to be more than the gods intended. I may not make my own fate, but I’ll be damned if I’m invisible any longer.

*Damsel in distress that grows with the book
*Overprotective antiheroes
*Standalone

This is a standalone, 18+ RH novel, which means our leading lady doesn't need to choose between her love interests. It is set in the same universe as my Rise of the Sphinx completed series, so while you absolutely do NOT need to read those to enjoy this book, it might add to the enjoyment of character cameos and lend a bit more to the world building if you choose to start there.

HFN, didn't start that well. It was a bit confusing. Might have been good in the middle but I had already lost interest and just wanted to finish. Its linked with Oblivion but because I have only ready book one of that series, I couldn't follow the story properly. There's another interesting character, Isis, not sure if its from another book or not. It felt like it could be an interesting world if read in chronological order. May be someday I will, idk. For now, it was just slightly interesting with potential.

So this story definitely has an array of characters, I didn't even work out exactly what Emersyn was until she revealed it to the other characters in the story. But we have half breed mages, half breed shifters, and a full-blooded shifter to name a few.

When Emersyn "Syn" washes up on the shore of a mysterious lake and is rescued by the men living in the house there she really is an enigma to them. She doesn't seem to know much about anything, especially the needs of her "human" body. Syn feels all these things for the first time and some of them even confuse her especially when she starts to have feelings for the men who have rescued her.

I have to say I think Jasper and Leo were my favourites in this story. Jasper is a bit of a wild card as the only full-blooded shifter in the group, he very much does what he wants, when he wants. Leo is pretty much the polar opposite of Jasper, he's quiet and almost the loner of the group. But he's so adorable, all I wanted to do was wrap him in a huge hug if he would let me that is.

Syn's Desires is a fascinating story from start to finish and one I will definitely be continuing if there is more in store for these characters.

This is an amazing story that will draw you in and not let you go. You will want to know more, and the next thing you realize.... it's done and you want the next one like right now. Each character brings a little bit something that just makes you fall more in love with the world

What I read, It's good

I stopped reading about 48%. It just wasn't ringing my jingle. It was slow, and I couldn't seem to bring myself to pick it back up again. I can't really place why though. I enjoy slow burn novels. Usually. I feel like I would normally enjoy this one. The characters have depth, and it is a different kind of plot than I'm used to. Maybe it's because they are glorified thieves, and I've never been able to route for the bad guy, though is complex, and they aren't really bad, even though one can get a little murdery. No, I take that back. I think this is exactly why I couldn't get into the book.

To rushed

I couldn't finish this book. Well I made it to about 84% and when we get to the climax of it all I just about had enough. Now this book has a good storyline, the issue, the author crammed to much to fast. I think this would have been better off as a series, taking time to slowly get to know her men, slowly figuring out what had happened with syn. But instead we get a women who has no idea what a cell phone is, or how to even be human because she not, yet as the story progresses she just starts to know things? There is a joke about Bluetooth and she gets it? The story is way to rushed, we don't get to know how she just starts learning all this so fast? and the rush with her mating her men? Way to fast! The new addition, again way to fast! All the information about syn? out of know where and shocking. And not in the good way, more on the lines of, where the heck did that come from? It was just like the author through w.e in so we could wrap this book up with a any means necessary. For crying out loud I had no real idea what any of these ppl looked like? Barley a background story behind them! Again could have worked in a drawn out series that explained much more and moved at a pace worthy of a good Thought out story.

Syn’s Desire by J. Kearston is a paranormal romance with a damsel in distress who gradually becomes less of a damsel in distress as the storyline goes along. I’m an avid fan of J. Kearston as I have read a few of their other books so I was excited to read this book, but for me…this book wasn’t exactly what I was expecting or really hoping for.
Syn’s Desire, for me, started out really slow and it took me several chapters to get into the storyline. The beginning of the book is a bit hard to get into and the longer it goes along the more I struggled to make sense of what exactly was going on. Syn, the female MC, goes through something that lands her barely alive on a lakeside beach. She’s found by a man who is part of a group of shifters, each of them uniquely different from the rest. She’s taken to their house and they each work together to bring her back from the edge of death. They get the sense that she is one of them, but don’t know what exactly. The first few chapters are hard for me to get into because there really isn’t foundation for me to grasp hold of concerning the characters. Everything is shrouded in mystery. Syn’s origins, the guys backgrounds, what they do and then what or who could be after them.
After about 7 chapters, for me, the book kicks into gear starts becoming a real page-turner. I’m getting information about the characters and their backgrounds, Syn’s origins are revealed and I’m now officially engaged in the storyline fully. While I do think he’s a bit extreme at times I have to admit that I find Jasper to be a really interesting character. The humor the author works into the story using him in the earlier chapters especially had me giggling. Jasper may be damaged, but he has a twisted sense of humor and applied correctly in certain scenarios it’s pretty funny. I like how Syn gradually begins to come out of her shell as well. Piece by piece she comes into her own and things begin to blossom and come together between her and the guys.
If it weren’t for the slow start and how long it took me to get into this particular story I’d rate this book 5 out of 5 stars, but since I struggled so much with the beginning and almost put this book down because of it I am rating this book 4 out of 5 stars. The beginning, for me, just feels like the author themselves were trying to find their own way, and that after a few chapters they final found their stride and really took off from there. I’ll probably eventually go back and reread this book again soon and see if it flows a bit better now that I know a bit more of what to expect. If you enjoy this author then I encourage you to pick this book up. If you’re like me and struggle a bit with the beginning just hang in there, it will get really good!

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

What an interesting start to a new series. We get a world where Supernaturals exist but they are not exactly welcomed by humans making it necessary for them to hide/blend in. On top of that is a whole different realm where the supes/Gods all live but they are a snooty bunch not welcoming those they consider inferior. Enter Emersyn a water nymph that is tossed from her home world and into ours giving her a human form for the first time. She washes up on the shore of a lake in a protected zone that is the home of four hot supes. Since she is unconscious they cannot question her so they have a hard time knowing if she is friend or foe. Once she wakes up it is a learning experience for both her and the guys as they all get to know one another falling for each other along the way. Plenty of action and danger in between the relationship building that leads them to a massive decision at the slightly cliff hangery ending. Makes for an enjoyable read as it all plays out leaving you ready to dive into book two when it comes out. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.

When I first started reading this book, I almost felt like I was missing something. It was in the way the characters talked about their world. Having not read the Rise of the Sphinx series, it’s possible that the context I felt like I was missing was in those books. But, other than the initial moment of disorientation, this book stands perfectly fine on its own. This story was such an unexpected twist on the gods and monsters I thought I knew. Like previous works from this author that I’ve read, there’s a bit of a tongue-in-cheek, or funhouse mirror, worldview at work here. Almost nothing is quite what I thought it was going to be and that made me love it all the more. Now that I know what most (I think) of what Syn’s purpose was, my brain has come up with a whole bunch more questions that I want to know the answers to. And with the set up that closed out this story, I’m more ready than ever to get my hands on the author’s next book.
I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book from the author through Black Cat.

How would you feel if you thought you were dying and instead ended up in a completely strange and unfamiliar world?
Emersyn lived her peaceful life as water nymph, without extra identity or being outstanding. Suddenly gaining human form, she is washed ashore at a lake house occupied by four outcasts, half-breeds, not welcome among the humans or the magical community. Learning the life on the other side is full of adventure and surprises, new feelings, but also exploring the world of danger. And innocent as she might be, with the chemistry between her and her self-proclaimed protectors is undeniable.
Hot, steamy, and intense story, with a very likable heroine and equally interesting suite. All of her men are distinctive, with unique personalities, skill sets, and personal issues, changing right before the reader's eyes under the sudden influence of the water nymph. The story line progressed rapidly, and despite a few small inconsistencies I noticed in the plot, it did not deduct any pleasure from the reading experience.

Emersyn is a Water Nymph who has spent her entire life in the sea until one day she washes up on a beach and finds herself in a Human body, Literally a fish out of water scenario ( water nymph but you know what i mean)
She cant remember who she is or where she came from and at the start is completely helpless and almost pathetic in an endearing way so i loved to see her character grow and blossom as she gains confidence.
The guys are all mis-fits who seem to have gravitated together to fill the gap being rejected by their communities to form a small pack almost but Syn changes the dynamic and turns this group of individual mis-fits into a strong almost bonded family.
As you would expect from J.R there are plenty of twists and turns along the way, humour, and intrigue and although you are left with some questions at the end of the book most are answered.

A really enjoyable read and although a spin off from her Rise of the sphinx series it can easily be read as a stand alone.

I really enjoyed this story, it didn't end up being what I thought it was going to be.
This book is a standalone, although it did leave a few things unanswered (not a cliffhanger though), so I get the feeling it wont be the last we see of Syn. It links in with the Rise of the Sphinx series although you don't need to have read any of them to enjoy this book.
Emersyn washes up near the cabin where the guys are staying and they don't know what to do. She is unsure of her surroundings and they are unsure where she came from.
I wasn't sure if I would like Syn but although she was unsure and a little naive, she wasn't a walk over with the guys, nor did she swoon at their feet. The guys are all different but all feel cast aside by their respective species so have found their own family. As Syn tries to help out with their day job, it makes the guys question what they are doing and why.

Grand adventure and why choose romance

Emersyn, a water nymph, is saved by a ragtag group of friends after being cast out of her native realm. She has to learn to survive in this new world with the help of Alasdaire, Hale, Jasper, and Leo, the group that found her. As the story progresses she learns some hard lessons, teaches a few soft ones, and must find who she wants to be before they might bite off more than they can chew. J. Kearston’s writing is not just about the characters journey of self-discovery, but also the readers enjoyment of blended mythologies. With grand adventure and why choose romance thrown in Syn’s Desires continues the excitement found in her Rise of the Sphinx series. I look forward to the rest of Syn’s journey with her men and hope to see more cameo appearances of my favorites from Raina’s story.

I read this book with my Kindle Unlimited subscription and I received a free copy of the book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not.

J. Kearston is back with another knockout start to a series. Mystery, intrigue, danger - all in a day’s existence for two half-breed mages, a half-breed shifter, and a Raven shifter. And then a beautiful girl washes up on the shore of a lake - that’s warded and life gets turned upside down.

Emersyn wakes up in the human world and has no idea what to think of the four men who have taken her in. Their care and concern go against all she’s been told about the human world. And some her feelings are definitely new and interesting.

As danger mounts, Syn and her guys find themselves thrown into a conflict way older than them and much more complicated than imagined. This highly imaginative world is great to get lost in, but be warned that coming back to this world is a kicker.

Nymph Emersyn (aka Syn FMC) turns up on a beach with no recollection of who or what she is. As well as any knowledge of the world around her she finds her rescuers (four hot mysterious men - Daire, Hale, Leo and Jasper) are much more than they seem to be. I loved the relationship between Syn and the guys. It was great to read how Syn changed as a character as her confidence grew throughout the book. She became more playful with the guys as well as learning to trust them. The sexual tension with all of them (and the addition of Slade) added a new dimension to their relationship. Its a totally brilliant read and i loved it. Will there be another book for Syn and the guys? I kinda feel like it needs a follow up or maybe thats just me lol

I loved this book so much! It was a joy to read. It would help to have read the Rise of the Sphinx series before this book but it is possible to read this without the other series it would just help to give more background if that series was read first. So it took me a little bit to figure out a few things but once I did figure it all out the book got even better. Emersyn ends up in an adventure she never planned on getting involved in and has to figure out how to survive. This is a great adventure with why choose and some seriously amazing characters that I would love to meet in person. Each of the guys brings something different to the dynamic and balances each other out. I definitely want even more of these characters and this world.

I loved this story, even though it's a spin off from a different series you don't need to read them to enjoy this one. Syn is a great character, she wakes up on the shore with no idea who / what she is and while she is a wee bit pathetic at the start (while she's finding her feet... literally!) you can't help but like her as her character grows through the book. J Kearston writes such wonderful dialogue, and I loved all the characters no matter how small their role. I also really like that the FMC was a water nymph, it makes a change from all the vamps / shifters / witches etc. This book felt like a breath of fresh air and J Kearston is fast becoming one of my favourite authors! I highly recommend.

Syn was found washed up on a beach by 4 men that help her learn to be human. They are all either mutts or on the wrong side of the veil. One side is for humans and the other for supernatural beings. Syn went from being a water nymph on the supernatural side to a human with no understanding of what she is now or what she did to deserve the forced change. Her men help her become strong and loved and she helps them to do the same. They become close and become mates! Slade comes in as a 5th mate which adds a fun dimension to their team! There is the perfect amount of adventure and lust😊 This book was awesome! A must read 💙

I read this without reading the Sphinx series set in the same world beforehand and found it was really easy to read without having read those first.

Syn does start out as fairly pathetic till she gets more used to being human and then turns into a more rounded character.

I didn't realise this was a standalone till after I'd read it and been whisked through from the human world going on heists to the magical one and back again all in one book.

Has quite a high in front of the curtains romance element as the story progresses really quickly.

A fairly interesting, face paced story with a touch of myth incorporated made for a really easy to read

I really enjoyed this book. The concept of gods and other supernatural creatures was so inclusive and detailed. Emersyn aka syn is such a heart warming character, full of emotion and rawness as she navigates her journey of coming into herself. It's a spin off of the rise of the Sphinx series, featuring elements of those stories in this one stand alone. It had great flow with the characters and the whole mystery of what syn is and who she will become. It's a book you'll enjoy right from the start and it'll have you not wanting to put it down because of the answers you'll want to seek. Fantastic book!

A great read from a new to me author, I have read a couple of her books now and I have enjoyed each and everyone.

In Syn's Desires we have Emersyn who is a great character that I quickly found my self enjoying. She has a lot of emotions to her that will have you needing to get to know her better. She is the type of character that you want as a friend and on your side.

The guys Hale, Daire and Leo I kind of was not expecting them to be so cool right off the bat. They are perfect for Emersyn.

Overall the plot was engaging, the pace was fast and the characters memorable. I would highly recommend this read.

J. Kearston just keeps delivering! Just like all of her other books, this book is amazing. Syn’s Desires takes place in the same world that her previous series Rise of the Sphinx takes place in, which made it super fun when characters from the series made an appearance in this book.

The book follows the journey of Syn, who was a water nymph and has been forced into a human body without reason, as she navigates a new world that she doesn’t know much about. I really like watching Syn go from weak and unsure to confident. I also like the harem building the author did.

J. Kearston has rapidly become a 1-Click author for me and I can’t wait to see what else she does.

Emersyn meets Daire, Leo, Hale, and Jasper when she washes up battered, bruised and mostly dead on the shore. And if that was the strangest part of her day, this might have been the shortest book ever! Fortunately for us, however, Syn's story is only beginning and the road she must travel to find her way home is full of danger, challenges and sexy bad boys.

J. Kearston delights with another peek into her amazing shifter world behind the Veil. If you liked Obscured, then get ready for another trip. I can't wait for the next!

I really enjoyed this parallel book within the world the author has previously created. The Original in question this time is called Sobel and one of his creations, Syn, is transferred across the veil through a whirlpool. She lands up in the hands of some yummy guys who are thieves by profession. They get caught up in a race to find the last piece of Pandora’s Box. The relationships develop organically and believably and they are steamy. Plenty of action and lots of unanswered questions to lead us into the next book. Definitely recommend.

Not what I expected when I started reading this book!!! I enjoyed everything about this book. Plenty of mystery, action, intrigue, and steamy romance to keep you hook from beginning to end. I was left desperately eager to see what's going to happen next. Looking forward to exploring more of this world. Overall a enjoyable and entertaining read and a great start for a new series. As always my review are totally voluntarily and no monetary compensation was received and the opinions I have expressed are my own.

This book pulls you in from the first page with a mysterious character washing up on the shore, broken and battered. Emersyn meets four alpha dudes ready to help her and patch her back up. I loved seeing Syn grow throughout the story from frail and unsure to strong and determined.

This is an RH book aka #WhyChoose and as the book progresses, so does the relationships between Syn and each of her saviors.

New to me author but I'm glad I was given the opportunity to test this author's writing style and I will be going back to read more from this universe.

Syn's Desires by J Kearston is set in the writer's unique universe found her completed 'Rise of the Sphinx'. That said this book is a stand-alone and doesn't need to be read as part of that grouping, although there is still a little bit of a teaser to hint at a larger problem that will likely be addressed in a coming book.

This book certainly doesn't disappoint. The plot moves along nicely and has plenty of action, thrills and romance to pack the pages. I'll definitely be checking out the rest of the series after reading this book.

Swooooooon, I think I love J Kearston’s mind! She keeps releasing such amazing books and Syn’s Desires is no different!
I personally love Syn because even though life has been a hard on her, she dusts herself off, gets her hands dirty and owns life. The guys are the perfect mix of protective and encouraging because they recognize Syn needs to stand on her own two feet while also ensuring she is safe. I absolutely recommend this book to anyone who loves reading about character growth, action and characters you just can’t help but fall in love with.

There’s nothing like starting with a mystery. It’s sad to think someone would feel to have no value to anyone; to question every nice thing someone does for you, and wonder what they really want; to wonder when they will stop pretending and start hurting you. Each character has a lot of baggage to let let go of before they can accept the attraction that binds them together. You will be drawn up in the danger and suspense as you try to figure things out.

This was quite the reading ride, full of action, mystery, danger and sizzling chemistry. The plot was engaging, and I really didn't want to put the book down for anything, but it was a little too long for a one-sit read ;) Expect deep emotions, emerging talents, politics and a bunch of rather broken peeps that need to heal so that they can fully love and be the family to each other that they were intended to be. All great fun and so much more to explore in this world.

This book is awesome! Syn is amazing she starts as a women who second guesses her self and constantly apologizes to a bada** who stands up to her men when they are trying to lock her in a bubble of protection. I love how she works on her powers and helps her men when they need it and how her men are now understanding shes not just their mate but their teammate. I like how this book is apart of the obsessed world with some characters I missed. I cant wait for the next book!
