Rate this book
Mack Macklin thinks he can’t go any lower. Getting a beatdown from a giant wearing bright yellow yoga pants proves he can.

When his buddy from better days offers him a job, he jumps at the chance. A couple of days out of town and cash to keep his bookie’s enforcer off his back, all in return for a puff piece on an old lady who thinks she saw a werewolf. What could go wrong?

Turns out, a lot.

Mack is a skeptic’s skeptic, trained to look at everything through the critical eye of a veteran reporter, but even he can’t explain the pack of hairy man-beasts that attack him. They leave him near death, which is a damn sight better than local residents seem to be faring. Can he find the silver bullet of truth, or is it time to Cry Wolf?

The Mack Macklin Mysteries follow a disgraced, and morally degenerate, reporter as he dodges debts, investigates the unbelievable, and rips the masks off the bad guys. Get on the Mack bus today to meet the new face of pulp fiction.

Cry Wolf by DL Link is an outstanding debut mystery that avoids committing the customary sins of the genre while successfully flirting with the paranormal. The first of three planned Cliff Macklin Mysteries, Cry Wolf tells the story of a disgraced political reporter forced to write what seems like a puff-piece assignment better left to the tabloids: a Werewolf sighting in wine country. With a clever premise and witty narration, I recommend this book to anyone caught up by the thought of a Scooby-Doo mystery for adults, as I was.

The setup is refreshingly simple, as is the main character, who charms and chafes the supporting cast in turns. You might call him a conman if he wasn’t so remarkably good at delivering on his confidence. Think Clark Kent by way of George Carlin and you’ll get the idea: a smoke-and-drink degenerate who does the right thing in all the wrong ways. He rakes the town of New Birmingham for clues with the same gentle touch Lennie used to pet the rabbits. You will like Mack, but you won’t like your reasons.

The author’s description of New Birmingham evokes the sleepy rural corners of Sonoma county, where the pace of life is slow but the pace car is still a Tesla. The dense forest surrounding the town serves to obscure more than just the wild animals presumed to be haunting this storied burg. Some of the more interesting and impactful players live on the outskirts, making Mack’s job of connecting the crimes to the criminals more difficult, and happily giving us more variety of setting.

The citizens are characterized in archetypes and surface level descriptions that remind you Cry Wolf is written in first person, and we can’t know what Mack doesn’t know—or care to know. It isn’t the author who prefers not to look too closely at seemingly inconsequential people, but the main character. It’s a clever device to remind us who we are dealing with, and how he deals with others. This is an added benefit in a who-dunnit mystery, where many authors telegraph their rogues gallery to the detriment of the payoff.

It is the characters that really shine in Cry Wolf. Many and varied personalities weave in and out of the plot, leading us to our own conclusions—right or wrong—just as they do Macklin. Cloris, the chain-smoking witness. Penelope, the love interest who is deeper than she first seems. Kirby, the once-missing and now just mysterious brother. And for his part, Mack is at first dismissive and indifferent to the supporting cast of New Birmingham, to the detriment of his deeper understanding of the machinations afoot. The collective conclusion is that small towns really do have stories to tell, if anyone cares to listen.

Without spoiling the specifics, you will be surprised: by characters and outcomes both, you will find your guesses wrong, and delightfully so. Mack weaves his way through New Birmingham like thorny bramble, choking a confession out of a reluctant town. There is more than one gratifying and shocking reveal in this taut, fast-paced novel that turns conventions of the genre on their heads, and seasoned readers of similar books will happily make room on their bookshelf for the next great writer entering the fold.

I love a mystery with humor. plus the added paranormal factor. it was great. mack seems to spend most of his time trying to recover from self-inflicted wounds but still is able to solve the mystery. despite his many flaws, he is a likable character, the read is fun and thoughtful. I will be reading the entire series.

This is a fun book. A down on his luck reporter takes a trash assignment about a werewolf sighting in a small rural town. The characters are unique, the setting feels real, and the mystery kept me turning pages. I was pleasantly surprised and can’t wait for the next in the series.

A picture perfect NorCal town is about the last place you’d expect someone like Macklin to end up, but never underestimate the guy’s ability to fit in when he’s after a story. This was a fast-paced, atmospheric read with great voice and tons of laughs. Looking forward to the next in the series!

This is a fast paced mystery with a bit of paranormal thrown in, which is just what I enjoy. It has a lot of humor, and the main character is a bad boy, but he is easy to root for because he is not a bad man. Mack is a work in progress, and I'm alreay looking forward to the next in the series.

CRY WOLF grabbed me at the first paragraph and never let up. Fast-paced and peopled with a myriad of interesting characters, it kept me engaged and guessing until the very end. Cliff “Mack” Macklin is a hoot—irreverent, irrepressible, and never settling for getting into a little trouble when he can get into a lot of it. I can’t wait to read author Daniel Link’s forthcoming sequels PHANTOM PAINS and BAD JUJU.

I do not have a lot of time to read for pleasure but this book kept me captivated. The author exquisitely paints a picture of a quaint little town with an underlying secret. His description of the characters puts you right in the middle of Macklin's adventure. The storyline keeps you enthralled and wanting to find out what is happening next. After reading Cry Wolf, I cannot wait for the next book in the series. This is a job well done by its author.

This is a fun, fast-paced, witty romp of a mystery with a wise-cracking, cocky, but endearing reporter as your guide. Cliff "Mack" Macklin may not have all his ducks in a row, in fact, he might have swiped a duck or two from someone else when no one was looking, but he has a unique charm and entertaining voice. Despite his character flaws, which he openly cops to throughout the book, I found myself rooting for him to succeed. I won't talk about the mystery itself to avoid spoilers, but it kept my interest and was well-balanced between being sinister and comedic. The writing is brilliant and sharply visual without being overly descriptive. The dialogue crackles, punches, and delights, especially Mack's. I enjoyed following along with Mack as he navigated his way through the bizarre town of New Birmingham, and his interactions with the various residents/suspects. It's been awhile since I've finished a novel in less than 48 hours, but Cry Wolf kept me coming back for more. I highly recommend this one, and I'm eager to read Mack's next (mis?)adventure.

Cliff "Mack" Macklin is exactly what I needed in an investigative reporter: hard-boiled and perfectly salted. Mack's sardonic tone and dry wit had me laughing from the onset of the story. I couldn't help but enjoy his tongue-in-cheek view of the world and marvel that he hadn't accidentally bitten said tongue off yet. Mack knows his flaws and is unapologetic in his quest for the truth.

Werewolves seem far-fetched, especially to Mack, but he's driven to solve the mystery that seems to lurk in every corner of New Birmingham, a quaint town in Sonoma's wine country surrounded by the dense forests of Northern California. The residents of the town are suspiciously suburban and I was hooked on solving the mystery along with Mack. The story kept me guessing and I was quite surprised by some of the twists. I devoured the book, unable to put it down amid the fast-paced story.

There were two supporting characters that turned out to be absolute gemstones and fascinated me: Ramon, the congenial loan shark who can't help but like Mack, and Marcel, Ramon's spandex-wearing muscle that probably takes roughing up debtors and recycling with equal gravity.

I'm looking forward to the continuation of Mack's story, where I'm hoping to learn more of his backstory that we had hints of in Cry Wolf. I need more quasi-supernatural mysteries in my life!

Cry Wolf is the first book in the A Mack Macklin Mystery Series. It is also the first book that I have read by DL Link and I was hooked from the very start. It is narrated in first person through the eyes of Mack who accepts a reporting job that takes him to the bizarre town of New Birmingham. The story is fast paced, interesting and at times humorous. I really enjoyed the characters in New Birmingham because they were secretive and weird. I definitely did not see that ending coming.

I recieved an advanced copy for free, and this is my honest opinion.

I love a good mystery filled with twists, turns and whats and whys. I love a mystery that will keep me hooked until the end, turning page after page. This one hit the nail on the head for me. DL Link is a talented author and their writing style was unique. I enjoyed this crazy ride!

Meeting Mack Macklin was a wild time and I loved every minute of it. His character instantly hooked me and kept me a part of his story til the end. I loved his quirky flaws and his antics. His journalistic talent and his investigative skills are awesome. I found myself on the edge of my seat more than one time! I would laugh, I would cuss,I would find myself wanting to whack Mack upside the head.

Through it all, this book kept me turning pages long into the night. I completely devoured this first addition to the Mack Macklin Mysteries. This author's superb talent combined with characters that leave an unforgettable mark on you, will leave you wanting the next book now! There's no "crying wolf" when I tell you, I can't wait to see where Mack goes next and take the next "who dun it" ride with him!

Get ready to have a new favorite detective...

I've never been one to read a lot of mystery novels. If more of them were like Cry Wolf, however, I would be addicted!

This book is simply awesome! It had me had me sucked in on page 2 and never let go. Mack Macklin is a classic, noir styled detective type (Although Mack is a journalist, which is a nice twist), Instantly likeable in a roguish, Han Solo kind of way.

DL Link is a gifted author, weaving the various story elements together with skill and ease. The pacing was pitch perfect, keeping the reader on edge until the very end.

In the current rush of independent books, "Cry Wolf" stands tall above the pack in ways few are able to. I can't wait to read more in the series!

I gotta tell you once you can get over Mack's hard exterior he is such a sarcastic and witty man that had me laughing so many times throughout this book.

Literally within the first chapter I was already giggling at the prospect of this hardened reporter getting his ass kicked by this giant french man wearing YELLOW, yes you read that right, YELLOW yoga pants. With no job and in need of money right away to relieve some of the pressure from his bookie, he accepts a job for a puff piece.
When Mack gets to the small town to interview the old lady who claims to have seen werwolves he's already a bit skeptic. However, things turn out differently for Mack when he himself is attacked by said werewolves. Now Mack is determined to get to the bottom of this mystery, even if the local residents aren't so welcoming and determined to run him out of town.

Cry Wolf is a fun, twist and turns, mystery that is aptly described as a Scooby-Doo mystery for adults. Mack is a snarky journalist-turned-amateur detective who is hard not to like and root for as he finds himself entrenched in a small-town full of the unexplainable. Cry Wolf has a little of everything: odd-ball characters (spandex-wearing hitman?), small town drama and secrets, and a dash of the supernatural. But even without all that, who isn’t down for some werewolves????? Cry Wolf is a great read and definitely one to pick up for Halloween.

Fun, fast mystery with plenty of twists, copious laughs, and satisfyingly spooky vibes. Mack is complicated and not without issues yet is still likable and someone you want to root for. Side characters add flair. I genuinely did not see the ending coming and was glued to every page. Enjoyable and perfect for Halloween.

Oh man! This book! The twists, the turns, the laughs...a who-dun-it you can't pry from your own hands. Seriously could not put it down! Aside from the perfectly crafted plot and a storyline that keeps you on your toes, the main character is a ton of fun. I mean, you can't help but like the guy despite his many many flaws. But I think the fact that he is so morally ambiguous makes him all the more delightful. I can't wait to delve deep into this fandom...in fact, I'm already buckled into the Mack Bus eager to ride this series for hopefully many years. Come on book 2!

“We don’t need to make up monsters,” I said, lighting a cigarette. “We’re the monsters….”

I have to say that I had no idea what to expect from Cry Wolf by DL Link but it was described to me as “basically a Scooby-Doo mystery for adults” so I figured I would give it a chance. I wound up really enjoying it! It definitely has a Scooby Doo vibe but it’s darker with some murders along the way.

The book doesn’t feel as dark as it could due to the main character, Mack Macklin. He’s sort of an anti-hero - smoking, drinking, gambling and in debt - but we find ourselves rooting for him. The town of New Birmingham is such a great setting. It’s beautiful, picturesque and charming. It has a bit of a Stepford vibe and I was engrossed in figuring out what there were hiding and why they didn’t want Mack poking his nose around too much.

This was a really enjoyable book and I would definitely read other Mack Macklin books as this looks like it’s the first in a series. Thank you to @mmbtours for this copy in exchange for my honest review.

I liked this book. It is nice start to this series. I did like Mack and do want to get to know him better as well as see him in action again. However, I felt like the story moved at a slow pace. I kept waiting for the story to pick up. Despite the slow pacing I did finish this book in a moderate fast timing.

The last third of the story was where it really picked up and all came together. If the rest of the book could have had the same energy as this last third of the story, my feelings toward this book would have been higher. In addition, I did not carry a strong connection towards most of the characters in the story except for Mack. It is a good thing Mack is the main lead character. Readers of cozy mysteries or mysteries in general may like this book and want to check it out. In regards, to the next book in the series, I would give it a try.

Welcome to the crazy life of Mack Macklin, if he's not running from one loan shark or another, he's trying to live off what earns from betting. There's never a boring minute when he finally gets a chance to write a story on the word of a crazy woman. But he never expects what is going to happen when he talks to her. I've never read a book that has the strangest people or crazy things going on. You have to read this book to see all the emotions that run through it. It's like your following different characters at different times, and the best thing is you really can't guess what is going to happen next as you do in some books. With writing like this, it's a must read book , so enjoyable you can read it again and again and still enjoy it.

Mack, a disgraced journalist, is sent on a two-bit assignment to write a fluff piece about a werewolf sighting in a small, out of the way, tourist town. Mack is in deep to his bookie, so a day trip out of the city seems like just the ticket. That is, until something large attacks his roommate's car leaving behind claw marks.
Mack has a wry sense of humor and a healthy dose of skepticism. I mean, who in their right mind would believe werewolves could be howling in modern-day California? But as the clues mount, skepticism might not be enough to get him out of town alive.
A fun read full of twists and turns. I highly recommend Cry Wolf!

A fast paced, page turning mystery with a paranormal twist. Mack Macklin is a disgraced reporter who owes a lot of money to a loan shark. He grabs the opportunity for a puff piece on a werewolf sighting in an idyllic North Cal town. The town has a strange history and strange goings on. Mack is determined to get to the bottom of it. If he isn't dodging the "enforcer", he's dodging the townsfolk and werewolves-making for an entertaining mystery. Beware of t.he full moon -a perfect spooky Halloween read.

What a wild ride!!

I don't love Mack but I was hooked from page 1 & every 3 pages I'd get more & more hooked. I genuinely enjoyed every page. Link has a knack for characterization and in a book about a small town full of people you expect a lot of cookie cutter characters, but not how Link writes them. The plot was well paced & the ending came swiftly, tied up right & satisfying. I didn't expect to give this 5 stars but anything else would be a lie. Great read overall, highly recommend!!!

Wow. Discovered this book on Twitter and wasn't sure what to expect. It was so much fun. Story reminds me of the Dresden Files but with less magic. Mack is fun to read along with, and as much as I can't get behind all of his behavior, I still couldn't help cheer when he got it right. Looking forward to reading more about him.
