New York Times bestselling author Kat Martin is back with her most thrilling novel yet in the Maximum Security series—The Perfect Murder.
The eldest of the three wealthy Garrett brothers, Reese Garrett is in the middle of a major purchase for his multimillion-dollar oil and gas company, Garrett Resources. The Poseidon offshore drilling platform venture will greatly enhance the company’s value.
But when Reese is on a trip out to see the rig, his helicopter crashes, leaving him hospitalized and two men dead. It’s discovered the chopper was sabotaged, and Reese is determined to find out who’s behind the crash—and whether he was the intended target. Then, when his lover, Kenzie, is accused of her ex-husband’s murder—a man with a vested interest in the Poseidon deal—clues start pointing to a connection that puts Reese, Kenzie and her young son in the sights of a killer.
From the Texas heat to the Louisiana bayous, Reese and his brothers must track down the truth before the body count gets any higher.
Kathleen Kelly was born on 14 July 1947 in the Central Valley of California, USA. She obtained a degree in Anthropology and also studied History at the University of California in Santa Barbara. She was a real estate broker, when she met her future husband, Larry Jay Martin. A short time after the two became acquainted, Larry asked her to read an unpublished manuscript of an historical western he'd written. Kat fell in love with both the book and the author! Then, after doing some editing for him, she thought she'd try her own hand at writing. She moved on to become a full time writer.
Published since 1988, she signed her books with her married name, Kat Martin, but she also used two pseudonyms: Kathy Lawrence for a book in collaboration with her husband Larry Jay Martin, and Kasey Mars for her first contemporary romances. The New York Times bestselling writer, among her many awards, has won the prestigious RT Book Review Magazine Career Achievement Award. To date, Kat has over eleven million copies of her books in print. She has been published in seventeen foreign countries, including England, South Africa, Spain, Argentina, Germany, Italy, Greece, Norway, Sweden, Russia, Bulgaria, China, and Korea.
Currently residing with her husband, a Western-writer and photographer, in Missoula, Montana, USA. But when they are not writing, they also enjoy skiing and traveling, particularly to Europe.
"I've always loved books. I was an avid reader, with any number of my own stories rolling around in my head. Writing them down seemed a logical step."
"I love anything old," Kat says. "I love to travel and especially like to visit the places where my books are set. My husband and I often stay in out-of-the-way inns and houses built in times past. It's fun and it gives a wonderful sense of a by-gone era."
This is an entertaining, well-written, steamy, action packed, romantic suspense novel. It is fast paced with likable, engaging characters, a smart, strong and capable female protagonist, murder, intrigue, suspense, a marvelous bond between brothers, and a happily ever after ending. It can be easily read and enjoyed as a stand alone, but it is even better when read in order. I am looking forward to reading the next entry in Ms. Martin's outstanding "Maximum Security" series with great anticipation. She never disappoints her readers!

"The Perfect Murder" is a wonderful addition the the Maximum Security Series. The characters are great and I enjoyed catching up with the Garett Brothers and the other members of the Maximum Security Team. You can always depend on Kat Martin for a plot that often takes a twisty path, a hot romance and edge of your seat suspense.
Reese Garrett is the oldest brother of the three Garrett brothers as well as the CEO of their company, Garrett Resources. He is definitely the love em and leave em type since his nasty divorce. His company is the most important thing right now as they are in the middle of acquiring an off shore drilling rig, the Poseidon.
McKenzie (Kenzie) Haines has her own priorities: her son and her job. As Executive Assistant to the CEO of Garrett Resources, she does an excellent job and is not about to let her attraction to her boss get in the way. This is a great job and Reese is a great boss.
As Reese takes a trip to see the offshore rig, the helicopter crashes and it is later discovered that it was sabotage. No one messes with a Garrett and soon the resources of the Garrett family are on a mission to find out who was behind the crash and why. When Kenzie's ex is murdered, the Garrett investigation heads in a new direction and Reese, Kenzie and her son all end up in danger.
This is the 4th book in the Maximum Security series (plus 4 novellas) and stands well on its own. Though as the series has progressed and more characters are introduced, it’s helpful to read them in order.
I’m a big fan of office romance, romantic suspense, and single parent tropes. Martin combines them all making this one of my favorite books of the series. Reese, CEO of Garrett resources, and his executive assistant Kenzie are at the center of two different conspiracies. The more Reese, his brothers, and the other operatives at Maximum Security uncover the more it becomes apparent that neither are what they appear to be. This story had a lot of layers to the mystery aspect which led to several suspenseful/thriller elements.
In the midst of all of this Reese and Kenzie both admit to their true feelings for each other. I love that even though they’ve been working together for 6 months, there’s still more to learn.
The pacing for this was wonderful and I really liked Reese, Kenzie, & Griff their HEA.
Narration: Another fantastic narration by James Anderson Foster. He really does a great job of giving all the characters a unique voice plus bringing emotion and suspense to the story. I’m looking forward to checking out more of his work.
I've been enjoying Kat Martin's Maximum Security series, and The Perfect Murder is no exception. While the previous titles have featured the members of the Maximum Security team, this title is more of a spinoff, with the hero being Reese Garrett, billionaire CEO of Garrett Resources, who is in negotiations to purchase a high-producing oil drilling platform in the Gulf, and as the novel opens he and several of his associates are heading there in a helicopter when things go horribly awry, and while there are survivors of the hard, ill-timed landing, two men are dead, and Reese wants to know why, and this novel takes off with guns a blazing, and doesn't let up until the exciting finish--it was a 4-star read for me.
Aside from the suspense, danger and violence in this novel, there is also an unlikely romance. Reese has been denying his attraction to his executive assistant, McKenzie (Kenzie) Haines, since she was hired 6 months earlier. She's equally attracted to her tall, handsome, billionaire boss, but since she plans his dates, she is well aware that he dates many beautiful women and doesn't do long-term relationships. She's a busy divorcee with a 9-year-old son, Griffin, and she doesn't see herself as in the running for Reese's affections. All that is about to change when Kenzie's ex-husband, Lee, is murdered, the clues lead to her as his killer, and the facts of her abuse at his hands, and his attempts to gain custody of his son, make her the prime suspect in his murder.
Ms. Martin has crafted a tangled web of mystery, danger, suspense, and violence in this novel, with just the right amount of romance and heat between Kenzie and Reese, and, as the novel progresses, all the aforementioned elements ratchet up into one well-written, exciting read. It's an excellent addition to the series, and I'm happy to recommend it.
I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions expressed are my own.
This is my first book that I have read from the maximum security series. It definitely won’t be the last. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Reese Garrett is the CEO and his administrative assistant is Kenzie. Kenzie is getting a divorce and sparks fly. Reese is extremely attracted to her, all is well until Kenzie’s husband turns up murdered.
Will he be able to solve who the murderer is and was his fling, Kenzie involved? If you enjoy romantic suspense with a murder mystery you will love this book. Highly recommend!
This is the fourth book in the series. It's in the middle which means it does suffer from "middle book series-itis" whereby it's not the strongest. This is a suspense romance. the romance part of the story was lame. Reese & Kenzie have chemistry and instantly act on it in the narrative. The writer seemed to concentrate her efforts on the suspense element of the story which was very strong. Lots of action moving at a rapid pace. I also liked that Reese's brothers (ie. the characters from previous books) made appearances. It is a family that this reader likes.
I know that the book is in the middle of a series but I chose to read it anyways cause the cover was pretty. It's my first thriller book that I've read. So good, I just really love the suspense. Now I want to read the rest of the books by Kat Martin. The characters were fabulous and was written well. It's a great action packed book
I prefer my murder, perfect or otherwise, without the romance. If I never read "pretty breasts" or "tightening groin" again, I'm okay with that. I don't get the title because there were actually quite a few murders, none of which seemed perfect, or no one would have gone to prison or suffered self-imposed consequences. It was a quickly-paced, nifty little mystery, which kept it from being completely unbearable. My original review was to give it 2½ stars, but after reading the synopses of the first three books, it's clear the real point behind this series is to find the Garrett Brothers and Jason Maddox wives. Gross.

I usually enjoy her books a lot more. This one revealed all the bad guys by the middle of the book, removed any possibility of surprise, and just put characters in jeopardy instead. It was kind of dull. And the author needs either to stop taking advice from her publisher or work on her math skills. The main character, Kenzie, has a 9-year-old son from a marriage that began after college. So she's about 32. She lives with her 70-year-old GRANDMOTHER, who was 38 when she was born. This grandmother's husband died five years ago, when she was 65, after 50 years of marriage. So Gran got married at 15, reproduced young, her child reproduced young, etc. She got married in 1966, not 1866. Aren't editors supposed to notice stuff like this? Or do they decide that mothers are out, grandmothers are in; screw the math.
Too much bare chest and rippling back muscles, plus a side of cleavage, for me. And somewhat perfunctory when it comes to details. This came without any exculpatory rider: Gran is 70, her husband died 5 years ago, they had been married for 50 years. Hey, possible, but not without comment. The plot is so so predictable and we plough into the romance from chapter 2, without a bit of realistic "making it difficult". But DNF.
Wow The Perfect Murder was a suspenseful, action packed book from the first pages. I absolutely loved the chemistry between Reese and Kenzie, and how in the beginning they fought those feelings for each other. I would certainly recommend this book to others.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and HQN Books, in exchange for an fair and honest review.
This author is pretty new to me so I was very excited to have the opportunity to read this book. I wasn't disappointed and am looking forward to reading more of her work. The Perfect Murder kept me on the edge of my seat with all of the twists, turns and mysteries happenings. I didn’t want to put it down until I knew how everything was going to end.
Reese Garrett, CEO of Garrett Resources, has been considering the purchase of an offshore drilling platform but accidents keep occurring and Reese was injured in a helicopter accident on the way to the platform. It was no accident but sabotage. Their main competitor is Black Sand Oil and Gas owned by Arthur Haines and Troy Graves. Reese’s personal assistant McKenzie Haines was married to Arthur’s son Lee. Arthur has a gambling problem and is in debt to casino owner DeMarco for several million. He has Lee killed to get Arthur’s attention. Then he kidnaps Arthur’s grandson Griff, son of McKenzie and Lee. This gets Reese involved because he has fallen in love with McKenzie. When Reese is involved, so are his brothers.
Troy has gotten used to what money can buy and he's not willing to settle for less so hires someone on the inside at the offshore platform to cause minor mishaps to get Garrett to withdraw his purchase bid. He has known Reese Garrett since college and Reese has always gotten the best of him but this time Troy plans to win. But again, Reese comes out the winner.
McKenzie has arranged dates for Reese in the past and knows he doesn't stay with any one woman too long. Although she is in love with him, she doesn't know how he feels about her. Sex has been great between them and he has been beside her when the police harrassed her about Lee's death. He saved Griff from the kidnappers. He finally gets on his knees before her and tells her exactly how he feels and what he wants, the same thing she does.
Never knew a Harlequin "romance" could be this entertaining! Reese Garrett is a hard-charging CEO of a billion-dollar oil and gas company based in Dallas. Together with his two brothers, who own Maximum Security, also based in Dallas, he has been interested in acquiring an offshore oil platform for the nifty price of five hundred million, but a series of accidents on the rig has made the acquisition somewhat less than attractive in his eyes. Then, as Reese is being ferried out to the platform on a company helicopter, the chopper goes down and Reese is injured; the pilot and another passenger are killed. After the NTSB investigation is completed, it turns out the helicopter was sabotaged - but who would want to do that, and what would their motives be? As Reese and his brothers sweep into action, Reese falls into a relationship with his attractive executive assistant, MacKenzie Haines, who is coming off a very difficult divorce. Montana Author Kat Martin tells this with one emotional crescendo after another, and then another and another, until you simply can't stop reading. Excellent work!
This is intense in both the romance and the suspense sides of the story! Reese and Kenzie both feel their attraction but know that an office romance is taboo and so fight it--until they can't anymore. I love that Martin shows them both struggling to protect each other and their families and yet not truly knowing who is the target of whatever is going on. Are they both under attack? Are they both just unlucky and in the wrong place at the wrong time? Reese Garrett is determined to find the answers and to keep Kenzie and her son safe . . . with a little help from his family of course! This is an excellent addition to the series but also works well as a standalone for those new to the books. And as a bonus, this included a novella about Derek Stiles (a CEO in Garrett's company) and Bree--a wealthy heiress who wants to prove herself and make her way apart from her family's name. When they find themselves on a hijacked plane, Derek is instantly impressed with Bree and determined to do whatever it takes to get her home alive.
THE PERFECT MURDER by Kat Martin is book 4 of the Maximum Security series. Reese Garrett is in the middle of a major purchase for his multimillion-dollar oil and gas company, Garrett Resources, when his helicopter crashes, leaving him hospitalized and two men dead. It is discovered the chopper was sabotaged, and Reese is determined to find out who’s behind the crash. Then his lover, Kenzie, is accused of her ex-husband’s murder—whose family has a vested interest in the Poseidon deal, and the clues start pointing to a connection that puts Reese, Kenzie and her young son in the sights of a killer. THE PERFECT MURDER is an action-packed thriller with twists and turns, danger, and sizzling heat that keep you reading page after page. Don’t miss Kat Martin’s suspenseful romances of this Maximum Security series.
Kat Martin knows how to write action & suspense romance!! The Perfect Murder is yet another one of her incredible books!! This is Reese Garrett’s book in The Maximum Security series. It starts with his plane going down & him investigating to see what caused the crash. McKenzie Haines is Reese’s assistant & they are attracted to each other but not acting on it. They find it hard to fight it after she fills in as his date for an event. There are a couple more incidents involving Reese & they need to find out who’s behind them while Kenzie is accused of murdering her ex-husband & her son Griff is kidnapped. Reese’s brothers Chase & Bran along with Hawk work together with Reese to investigate & rescue Griff. There’s romance, murder, action, suspense, intrigue with lots of twists & turns and of course a HEA for Reese & McKenzie. Fabulous book & series!! A definite must read!!
Kat Martin is one of the few Romantic Suspense author who is able to give readers everything they want with a balance. The characters are what readers are looking for smart, feisty, capable and wanting to find the answers to the questions they are in need of. Yes the men rich, smart and can kill with their hands. The women are smart, independent and capable of taking care of themselves and those they love. The mystery and bad guys are always dark and evil and in need of a good old butt kick.
The Perfect Murder is the Perfect balance of Mystery, Romance, suspense and action. Hands down one of the best romantic suspense book I have read this summer.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of Kat Martin The Perfect Murder
I really enjoy Kat Martin's way of bringing to the page the right mix of elements without it being overwhelming. I enjoyed everything from the romance to the conflict all the way through to its resolution. I liked Reese and Kenzie and enjoyed getting to know them better. I very much appreciated the author's effort to establish and grow their connection on the page. They had great chemistry but it was ultimately their connection that convinced me to become invested in the story. As for the conflict, I felt like Kat Martin did a great job of including enough twists and turns to keep me guessing for a while and enough fast-paced action scenes to add to the thrill.
All in all, a great addition to the Maximum Security Series and a thrilling, fast-paced yet steamy read.
Reese Garrett is the protagonist in this installment of the Maximum Security series. Reese is in the middle of a multi-million dollar deal to purchase an oil rig, on a trip out to visit the rig Reece's helicopter crashes, leaving two dead. Then his executive assistant and lover, Kenzie is accused of her ex-husband's murder. Reese and Kenzie race to figure out who murdered her ex-husband and who's behind the helicopter crash and other 'accidents' that seem to be happening out on the oil rig.
All our favorite characters from the previous Maximum Security novels make an appearance--Chase, Hawk, Bran and Tabby.
All in all a great addition to the series. Steamy romance scenes and action-packed suspense.
This is the 4th book in the Maximum Security series. It was a great love story with tons of action. I recommend it❤️
Reese Garrett is the eldest Garrett brother and in charge of running Garrett Resources. On a trip to see a oil rig his company is considering purchasing, the helicopter crashes and Reese ends up in the hospital. When he finds out the chopper was sabotaged, Reese is eager to find the person behind the wreck. Is someone trying to sabotage his deal? McKenzie Haines is Reese’s executive assistant. She’s a single mom, living with her grandmother. Her ex is found murdered and McKenzie is the prime suspect. Reese doesn’t think she’s guilty and wants to prove her innocence. His developing feelings for her are a problem he doesn’t need. Will he clear McKenzie?
I loved this book, I could not put it down because the action started on page one and The Perfect Murder is well worth the read. Reese and Kenzie have chemistry that basically shoots fireworks off the page. Between trying to figure out who is trying to kill Reese, there is also danger coming at Kenzie's family that we don't see coming however it all ties together. I love that we get to see Reese's alpha personality and his strength, but also the strength he gets from his brothers, Chase and Bran. When the three work together they are an unstoppable force and its amazing to watch. I highly recommend this book and series!
Received ARC in exchange for voluntary honest review from NetGalley
I've enjoyed all the books in this series but this is probably my favorite. Reece is a business man who is looking to acquire an off shore drilling rig but he's been plagued with setbacks. When the setbacks involving the rig escalate to attacks on his life and his assistant, the situation becomes really dangerous. Although he's attracted to his assistant, Kenzie, he is morally opposed to the idea of fraternizing with his staff. However when her welfare and that of her young son are in danger, Reese and Kenzie have to reorganize their priorities. Kidnapping, murder, suspense, and romance make this a hard to put down read that I highly recommend.
This book certainly started off with a bang. There were enough twists to keep you guessing, and the romance was fire. Reese is strong, with a commanding presence you can practically feel ooze off the page. Kenzie's strength is a little different, and her determination made me absolutely love her. Together, they practically made my Kindle steam. The story definitely delivers on the action scenes as well...think action movie meets romance. You don't have to read any of the other books in the series to enjoy this book, so if you're looking for a page turner with heat, then you'll want to grab this book.
Book title: The Perfect Murder by Kat Martin Book Reviewer: Donna Feyen The Perfect Murder by Kat Martin is the fourth book in the Maximum Security series. This is Reese’s story that we have been waiting for.
Reese is the rebel teen turned CEO of a billion dollar company. On the way to a meeting he is in a helicopter accident that he learns was no accident. He starts his own research into who did it and why.
Then his assistant turned lover is accused of murdering her ex husband. They start to wonder if all of the incidents are related.
Kat writes an action packed romantic suspense with equal balances of romance and suspense.
I loved this book! It has all the ingredients that I wanted, a bit of romance, a complicated and intelligent mystery, and a set of characters which, while slightly predictable, kept my attention enough to want to read more about them and find out what happens to them. Multimillionaire and alpha-male Reese meets competent and sensitive Kenzie, his P.A. and they both fall for each other. But their work and family life is complicated and the consequences for both of them are dealt with explosively in this fast-paced Maximum Security book. I'm going to get books one and two now, as I think this is a great series!
Reese Garrett is in a helicopter crash. It was sabotage. Was he the intended victim? Reese's executive assistant is accused of murdering her ex-husband. Reese is in the middle of acquiring Poseidon Oil which is an offshore drilling operation. Are these things related? This is a twisty story in typical Kat Martin fashion. I enjoyed it very much. Reese was a great character with a difficult past. Kenzie is a wonderful character who shows strength and commitment. They were wonderful together. Reese got help from his brothers and others at Maximum Security. I enjoyed the interaction with all the characters.
