Sometimes called "the father of modern linguistics", Chomsky is also a major figure in analytic philosophy and one of the founders of the field of cognitive science. He is a laureate professor of linguistics at the University of Arizona and an institute professor emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Among the most cited living authors, Chomsky has written more than 150 books on topics such as linguistics, war, and politics. In addition to his work in linguistics, since the 1960s Chomsky has been an influential voice on the American left as a consistent critic of U.S. foreign policy, contemporary capitalism, and corporate influence on political institutions and the media.
Born to Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants (his father was William Chomsky) in Philadelphia, Chomsky developed an early interest in anarchism from alternative bookstores in New York City. He studied at the University of Pennsylvania. During his postgraduate work in the Harvard Society of Fellows, Chomsky developed the theory of transformational grammar for which he earned his doctorate in 1955. That year he began teaching at MIT, and in 1957 emerged as a significant figure in linguistics with his landmark work Syntactic Structures, which played a major role in remodeling the study of language. From 1958 to 1959 Chomsky was a National Science Foundation fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study. He created or co-created the universal grammar theory, the generative grammar theory, the Chomsky hierarchy, and the minimalist program. Chomsky also played a pivotal role in the decline of linguistic behaviorism, and was particularly critical of the work of B.F. Skinner.
An outspoken opponent of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War, which he saw as an act of American imperialism, in 1967 Chomsky rose to national attention for his anti-war essay "The Responsibility of Intellectuals". Becoming associated with the New Left, he was arrested multiple times for his activism and placed on President Richard M. Nixon's list of political opponents. While expanding his work in linguistics over subsequent decades, he also became involved in the linguistics wars. In collaboration with Edward S. Herman, Chomsky later articulated the propaganda model of media criticism in Manufacturing Consent, and worked to expose the Indonesian occupation of East Timor. His defense of unconditional freedom of speech, including that of Holocaust denial, generated significant controversy in the Faurisson affair of the 1980s. Chomsky's commentary on the Cambodian genocide and the Bosnian genocide also generated controversy. Since retiring from active teaching at MIT, he has continued his vocal political activism, including opposing the 2003 invasion of Iraq and supporting the Occupy movement. An anti-Zionist, Chomsky considers Israel's treatment of Palestinians to be worse than South African–style apartheid, and criticizes U.S. support for Israel.

This is classic Chomsky. This book published around 90 s but when you read it, you felt like yesterday newspaper. I will try to cover some topics since it would be impossible to review all chapters. The title itself pretty vague if you judge a book by its cover but reading through, it is a comparison between Cold War and post Cold War era. The idea of New World Order from two superpowers to the single country wielding all the power to herself. Chomsky pointed out the hypocrisy of United States (like I said, classic Chomsky) by comparing the military budget during the Cold War and after the dissolvent of USSR. In this era of democracy (or pseudodemocracy) every Tom, Dick and Harry know United States is the one championing the ideology of democracy and shoving it down third world countries but as Chomsky pointed out, this is a fallacy or rather an act to monopolize all the resources in the country. A classic example would be Saudi Arabia. What is more worrying isn't only the hypocrisy but US tendency to destroy the democracy if the so called democracy won't side with them. With the arising power of BRICS now, it would be interesting to see whether they can balance the power of US + NATO in shaping the world's policy. But enough about that. What amazed me at first is this book is published by AUC Press which based in Cairo, a faraway place from MIT University the place where Chomsky works. This book published from a series of lectures of Chomsky at Cairo ( I wish he will come again in the near future before I'm going back) talking about Middle East. I don't know which time is worse, time during the publication of this book or now. 1980 to 1995 a lot of things happened in Middle East. The Gulf War, Saddam, Camp David, the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq, and else. 2000 to 2016, things didn't look any better. Some would argue worsen. Invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan, the Spring Revolution, Syria Civil War, disarray of Libya and Iraq, infighting of Palestinian authority (well this is a prolongation from pre Oslo Accords but doesn't matter, still going on), the struggling of Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Iran to become Middle East guardian, the Kurdish country and thousands else. As usual, Chomsky brings out the pessimism in me. While I am not exactly an optimistic person, this book worsen it especially if we see, crises are everywhere. From a looming nuclear war between Russia and US especially with those Ukrainian crisis, to the signing of TPPA by Malaysia. Chomsky mentioned about NAFTA (North America Free Trade Agreement) and how it destroyed the small and medium enterprise in the signatory countries considering they are not strong enough to compete against giant of TNC (Transnational Companies) in the free market. What makes it interesting is how US itself used to protect their market by banning some companies from interfering local companies growth. This is just one of many hypocrisy of US. Not to mention the Israel Palestine crisis. Little did I know, US once sided with Palestine pre 1961. But the allure of a Middle East police and the strength of Zionist lobbyists are too strong. What is interesting is how Sadat once proposed a peace treaty before the second war with Israel. Jarring Sadat 1961 recognized the existence of Israel as a country. Chomsky coined this "historical engineering". The main media will intentionally ignored some facts and keep repeating others until it becomes peculiar to mention otherwise. This is too depressing. I am gonna stop here. Chomsky 's book as usual a bit dry but once you manage to get through it, believe me you would benefit a lot but I gonna throw a cautious warning. Do not get depressed.

تشومسكي العجوز التسعيني الثرثار لا يترك لك لحظة واحدة لتلتقط أنفاسك. سيل من المعلومات يتدفق مع كل صفحة، وحتى لو كنت تعلم ما يقول سيباغتك بحشد من التفاصيل لا يمكن أن تجدها مجتمعة في مكان واحد عدا كتبه هو. هذا هو تشومسكي الكلاسيكي وهذا ما ننتظره منه في كل كتاب.

October 18, 2014 نعوم تشومسكي كاتب معروف بمواقفه المناهضة لإستعلاء الدول الكبرى و استغلالها لفقراء العالم الكاتب في الفصل الأول يوضح كيف يتحالف أغنياء العالم المتقدم تكنولوجيا مع أغنياء الدول الفقيرة و أصحاب النفوذ فيها ليتم استنزاف ثروات الشعوب و أن الأنظمة الديمقراطية و المستبدة تسيطران على شعوبهما و لكن مع اختلاف الأسلوب فالأولى تلجأ إلى تزاوج الاعلام و المال عن طريق الشركات الكبرى والتحالفات مع الساسة فتتحكم في الجماهير بإختلاق أعداء أو تضخيم لحجم الخطر بينما الثانية تلجأ للسيطرة المباشرة بالبيروقراطية و العسكر إذ ليس لديها ما يسمح لها بمحاولة الإقناع ولو بإدعاء كاذب

Obra muy rigurosa que trata, sobretodo, de los trapos sucios de la política exterior estadounidense y del neoliberalismo durante la segunda mitad del siglo XX, hablando asimismo de acontecimientos políticos relevantes en América Latina y Oriente Medio y otras cuestiones donde EEUU jugó un papel importante (y no para bien). Son reveladores también algunos hechos que narra sobre el Reino Unido e Israel (país títere de EEUU) así como de Japón, un Estado que, pese a ser capitalista, dio un enfoque diferente a su política económica, alejándose del neoliberalismo angloestadounidense.
El autor también critica, aunque de forma breve, el papel de la URSS en cuanto a política interna y externa. Dicha brevedad puede atender al hecho de que, como la historia la escriben los vencedores, somos bien conocedores de lo malo que sucedía al este del "telón de acero", pero no tanto de lo negativo que sucedía en el otro lado.
El autor también critica, aunque de forma breve, el papel de la URSS en cuanto a política interna y externa. Dicha brevedad puede atender al hecho de que, como la historia la escriben los vencedores, somos bien conocedores de lo malo que sucedía al este del "telón de acero", pero no tanto de lo negativo que sucedía en el otro lado.

libro muyyy interesante que incita a reflexionar sobre la intervención de estados unidos internacionalmente, además de cuestionar el papel de los medios para el control de la población. un poco pesado de leer al contener muchos datos y ejemplos, pero necesarios para reforzar el punto del autor. :)

Noam el mago, que muere y vuelve a la vida como el Cristo anarquista y disidente.
No es fácil de leer. Un ensayo que parece un pergamino infinito, sin párrafos ni paradas programadas. El contenido, de una visión y valor incalculable, merece la indigestión de texto escrito que da al minuto y medio de empezar a leer.
Muestra el mundo como lo que es, con los nombres, apellidos, fechas y lugares que hay que conocer para entender quién gobierno el mundo, como y por qué.
Debe leerse.

uff...dugo previše sam ovo čitao nažalost isprekidano zbog boravka u bolnici i ostalih stvari...uglavnom...iznimno iscrpno (30 ak stranica bilješki, fusnota i izvora) Mogu reći da me profesor Chmosky iznenadio u otvorenoj borbi protiv "novih svjetskih poredaka" SAD -a... U samoj knjizi Chomsky neprekidno napada, potvrđuje činjenicama (često iz novinskih članaka New York Timesa - koji su podržavali sve akcije SAD -a) sve napade i režime Amerikanaca od srednje južne Amerike, Bliskog istoka itd. Navodeći dokumente koji su pomagali Amerima da sve režime održe, a kasnije kada su im smetali, maknu ih - primjer s Sadamom Huseinom, Chomsky pokazuje da je novi svjetski poredak zapravo onaj stari još od 1. svj rata. Za ne povjerovati je koliku besramnu kontrolu, licemjerje posjeduju Ameri k0jima ubijanje nedužnih civila ne predstavlja problem. Chomsky očito ima hrabrosti za izvoz kada se otvoreno okrenuo protiv Izraela, Amerike. Sve što je izrečeno u knjizi, potkrijepljeno je s raznovrsnim izvorima ugl s američke strane (želeći time pokazati kako su Ameri sami sebe često potkopavali) i pokazujući one dokumente i izvore koji su ostali zataškavani...
Negativnost ove zaista iscrpne knjige je ne baš zahvalan stil rečenica koje Chomsky kao možda i najvažniji lingivst 20 st nije jednostavno slagao. Ipak, najveća zamjerka je jednostranost u političko vojnom aspektu koji je samo i izuzetno protiv SAD -a (ugl opravdano) no time se nije stvorila veća slika i percepcija događaja koji nikada nisu i ne mogu biti jednodimenzionalni. Također, ne baš spretna sustavnost misli i njena disperezija u općenitosti koja se znala i ponavljati - primjerice ponavljanje američkog terora i poopćavanje na sve dijelove svijeta... Sandisti, Somoza, Bliski istok etc.
NE slažem se s viđenjem situacije na Izraelu prema kojoj Chomsky ispoljeva veliko ne slaganje i po meni jednostrano gleda situaciju ... Okruženi radikalnim islamskim fundamentalistima Izraelci su primorani ulagati u naoružavanje i obranu što često dovodi do kršenja povelja, konvencija i dogovora primjerice statusa Oslo I Oslo II, ali i ne dovoljna kritičnost (zapravo nikakva) prema radikalnim ekstremizmom i stvaranje Hezbolaha. To me malčice razočaralo u čitanju - jednostranost i zato ocjena nije bila veća, ali ipak preporučam zbog obilnosti, točnosti i iscrpnosti podataka. Ovo sigurno neće biti jedina knjiga prof Chomskog koju ću pročitati.
Usput - Noam Chomsky podsjeća me kao pandan Garyu Kasparovu - bivšem ruskom šahovskom velemajstoru koji djeluje piše protiv Putinovog režima u Rusiji. Iako postoje razlike i u djelovanju i u kontekstu istoga - nekako mi djeluju slično kao istočni i zapadni genijalci protiv svojih sustava.

يناقش تشومسكي في أربعة فصول النظام العالمي الحالي (حتى نهاية التسعينات وأوائل الألفينات) الذي تحركه الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية بناء على مصالحها ومصالح شركاتها عابرة القوميات. ويصف الكاتب رؤيته في الفصل الأول السكون المصاحب للحرب الباردة وكيف أعدت امريكا لنظام عالمي جديد تكون لها فيه الكلمة الوحيدة. وفي الفصل الثاني قدم تصوره لملامح النظام العالمي وكيف تم تطبيق ذك في أمريكا اللاتينية وكيف أثر تدخل الولايات المتحدة على تلك الدول. ثم يعرض بعض ذلك في الفصل الثالث التحالف الأمريكي-الاسرائيلي وكيف تدخلت الولايات المتحدة في الشرق الأوسط لتنفيذ مصالحها. وينتهي الكتاب بخاتمة عن التطورات في لشرق الأوسط في الثمانينات والتسعينات - التطورات التي حدثت بعد طبعات الكتاب الأولى. بصورة عامة الكتاب جيد وبه معلومات قيمة - وان كانت بالطبع تبدو متحيزة نظرا لموقف الكاتب المعارض للسياسة الأمريكية. وجدت بعض الصعوبة في متابعة ترتيب الأفكار. الترجمة معقولة جدا.

Mi primer libro de Chomsky que leí, realmente chocante corroborar lo que uno ya tiene como idea acerca de como funciona el mundo a nivel politico, el enfoque sesgado de los conflictos por parte de la prensa y el sufrimiento inferido por la potencia terrorista más grande del ultimo tiempo, la cual ejerce como policia mundial y se muestra a los demás como un ejemplo a seguir.
Lectura obligatoria para empezar a entender el mundo y poder concientizarse de lo que ocurre y por qué es importante organizarse para disminuir el sufrimiento de los demás y no dejar pasar por alto abulicamente los problemas de hoy.

I do wish Noam Chomsky hired a PR firm to refine his message and market it better - as of right now only the fringiest left reads his political message. A great pity, because it's very hard to disagree with it.

Very informative and typical for Chomsky. Unfortunately it is hard to use this as a reference so when reading be sure to have a hi-lighter handy to take notes.

حيث فيما مضى سعت الدول الاستعمارية ممثلة في اوروبا في امبريالية مباشرة باحتلال اراضي وبناء مستعمرات واستغلال موارد الدولة المحتلة الى جانب التضييق على الصناعة في هذه الدول والاستيلاء على المواد الخام، ومن ثم تخريب منتجات هذه الدول بطرق عدة، ثم في النظام الجديد دخلت امريكا واسرائيل اللعبة حيث انهم من قبل كانت اسرائيل غير موجودة وامريكا حديثة نسبيا، تشكل النظام العالمي الجديد بقواعد وضعتها أمريكا، بقوانين تصدر من أمريكا وتطبق او تعطل تبعا لهواها، فتحدث تشوميسكي في البدء عن الصراعي الامريكروسي وكيف ان امريكا لم تكتفي بانتهاء الحرب الباردة لصالحها وتفكك الاتحاد السوفيتي،بل انها سعت بكل قوة للقضاء على اي فكر شيوعي لحساب الراسمالية والهيمنة الامريكية وبالتالي تعميق الهوة بين الاغنياء والفقراء ضاربة بذلك عرض الحائط بحقوق الانسان والعدل والديمقراطية وخلافه..ثم استطرد في عدة مقالات عن سياستين سياستها في دول امريكا اللاتينية وسياستها في الشرق الاوسط حيث توجد قواعد عامة في كليهما وخاصة حسب طبيعة كل مجموعة..
فالقواعد العامة هي الامبريالية السياسية وهذه تتم عن طريق القروض وهدم الاقتصاد القومي باستخدام شركات عابرة القارات،والقواعد الخاصة احتاجت في بعض الدول تدخل عسكري لحماية مصالح او كذبة انقاذ شعوب مثل فيتنام والعراق وبشكل مباشر واحيانا باشكال غير مباشرة كحروب فلسطين ولبنان والخليج ..واحيانا اكتفت امريكا بالسيطرة عن طريق صنع او تقوية الجماعات المسلحة لتاجيج الفتن الطائفية والحروب الاهلية مرة باسم محاربة الشيوعية بامريكا الاتينية ومرة باسم الاصولية الاسلامية في الشرق الاوسط وفي كلاهما لابد من تقوية الانظمة الدكتاتورية المباشرة او الديمقراطية المزيفة الغير مباشرة وهذا يتطلب ان يوضع ملف حقوق الانسان واعانات هذه الدول ومساعدات جيوشها في الدرج الخفي وفي حالة حدث وانقلب هولاء الرؤساء وانبروا رافضين القروض بسياستها التي تضطرهم لاضعاف الصناعات المحلية وتمتنع عن استيراد المنتجات الامريكية يتم اخراج ما تم اخفاؤه ومن ثم قلبهم من كراسيهم لتستمر الدائرة .معونة، قرض،استيراد لاستعادة اموال المعونة،دين، قرض ..وعرج ايضا على اهمية النفط وبالتالي نشأت وتوطدت علاقة امريكا بدول الخليج حتى وان كانت غير محتاجة لكل هذا النفط ولكن لابد من استمرار نهبه لضمان استمرار السيادة مستقبلا..

Even though I've been working in the IT industry for the past 15 years, Noam Chomsky's enlightening book, "World Orders, Old and New," has found me hooked on international politics and diplomacy subject. As someone who once aspired to join the illustrious Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and fully immerse myself in the world of politics and global affairs, I was able to keep the spark alive by engaging in substantial reading on these subjects.
Chomsky's work offers a paradigm-shifting view of world politics, as well as a thorough and engrossing investigation of international relations. While the author's primary specialty is in linguistics and philosophy, his ability to dive into the difficulties of diplomacy and world governance is admirable.
As an avid student of International Relations, albeit in a different field, I find Chomsky's alternative viewpoint on the subject to be quite valuable. His razor-sharp analysis relates historical events to their contemporary ramifications, offering insight into the structural biases and power dynamics that govern international relations. Chomsky challenges conventional narratives via this perspective, urging readers to critically evaluate the acts and motivations of global powers.
This book speaks to me in particular because of its study of the United States' role in shaping world affairs. Chomsky's critique of realpolitik and powerful nations' frequently self-serving objectives forces me to consider the complexities of diplomacy and the quest of global peace and justice. So this is probably the 6th or 7th book by Noam Chomsky that I have read, and I believe this will be the last one I read.
This is partly because I disagree with Chomsky greatly on many matters, but more so because Chomsky frequently uses the same examples repeatedly across his books. Of the books I’ve read from him, there’s only one that doesn’t mention East Timor. At a given point it becomes repetitive.
What I’ve seen in most of Chomsky’s political works is that most of his arguments are based upon the use of hyperbole and adjective. He is fond of calling people fascists and nazis. He is also fond of using terms like “brutal” without explaining what was so brutal about a given situation. Rather, he just uses the word. I imagine, given that he is an expert in language, this is not a mistake or a quirk in his writing.
What I will say though, Chomsky makes a point throughout this book that I used to reject out of hand. The idea that the Republican and democratic parties are essentially the same. As some libertarians might say, they are two wings of the same bird of prey. When I was younger, I would usually reject this out of hand. As time has gone on though, this thesis seems much more tenable and Chomsky makes a convincing argument. The two parties play act hating each other, for the theatre, but ultimately they behave in the same ways and pursue similar policies. I’m writing this on 2/26/21. Just yesterday President Biden ordered air strikes against targets in Syria without congressional approval. Congratulations to him, he has officially become a US President. As Tom Woods would say, it’s another piece of evidence that the US operates under a bipartisan foreign policy consensus.
Another salient point that Chomsky makes that I look forward to using in the future is his argument that the free market has never existed. It very much supports the libertarian argument so I look forward to citing Chomsky as this matter.

İngilizlerin KÜRTLER üzerinde Kimyasal ve Biyolojik silahları denediğini belgeleri ile yazmış.
O zamanlar Osmanlı'ya karşı kullanılan Kürtler kısa bir İngiliz egemenliği altında OSMANLI sonrasında böyle bir emperyalist güçlerden "İnsan olmadıkları" bahanesi ile aynen Noam Chomsky İngilizlerin böyle bir bakış açısı ile Kimyasal ve Biyolojik silahlar denendiğini yazıyor.
Bugün Türkiye'de bir Kürt sorunu var deniyor. Türkiye'nin en önemli Cumhurbaşkanları arasında Kürtler var. Kürtler ve Türkler İstanbul gibi büyük şehirlerde sorunsuz komşuluk hayatı yaşamakta.
Ben bu kitap sayesinde o dönemde İngilizlere şimdi ise Amerikan tankları altında yatarak Amerika'nın o coğrafyadaki politikalarına hizmet etmelerine üzülüyorum. O dönemde gerçekten İngilizler Osmanlı sonrasında böyle bir zulüm yaptılarsa Kürtlere, Kürt dostlarım beni yanlış anlamasınlar ama bugün Türkiye Cumhuriyetinin bölgede yaptığı anayasal hakları görüp büyük bir şükranla bu topraklara bağlı kalmalarını ve dostluk içinde yaşamaları konusunda ellerinden geleni yapmaları gerektiğini düşünüyorum...

„Neue Weltordnungen: Vom Kolonialismus zum Big Mac“ ist ein Buch von Noam Chomsky aus dem Jahr 2004, in dem er seine kritische Analyse globaler Machtstrukturen fortsetzt. Es verbindet die historischen Muster des Kolonialismus mit modernen Formen von Hegemonie und wirtschaftlicher Kontrolle. Der „Big Mac“ fungiert dabei als Symbol für diese neuen, subtilen Mechanismen der Einflussnahme. Chomsky zeigt, wie die USA und andere mächtige Akteure weiterhin ihre Interessen durchsetzen – oft durch neokoloniale Strategien und mediale Beeinflussung.

كتاب جداا قيم وموسوعة تاريخية سياسية وحقائق حول كيفية تشكيل النظام العالمي الجديد وإعادة بناء المجتمعات الراسمالية الغربية والهيمنة الأمريكية على الاقتصاد العالمي والسيطرة على الشعوب .
