I read an earlier edition of this book, Frankly, Madame: I Don’t Give a Dear. The author updated and improved the story, removing some implausible elements, but preserving the chemistry and humor between the two main characters, as well as the action adventure of the book.

The novel is set primarily in New Orleans, where the main characters, Kaytie Flame O’Hara and Dax Larue, are covering a ghost story for rival news magazines. Kaytie is a Christian who wants to uncover the truth. Dax believes in everything but nothing and just wants a good story that’s good for ratings. Nevertheless, the two are attracted to each other, but Kaytie is determined to behave.

After a series of kidnappings and harrowing encounters with a voodoo practitioner, Kaytie finds herself in a life-and-death showdown between the powers of darkness and the God of light. The danger and suspense will have you at the edge of your seat.

If you or a loved one is curious about the supernatural but you want to read some fun fiction from a Christian perspective, this is a good choice. Be gracious and overlook the little typos and formatting issues, because the story is worth it! You’ll also enjoy the two sequels.

The story opens with the heroine Kaytie Flame O’Hara, a reporter for the Beyond Fantasy magazine based in Chicago, arriving in New Orleans. She is there to investigate reports of a ghostly apparition that appears every Friday the thirteenth at the infamous Legende De Lafitte Hotel.

Despite having reported in her magazine that she saw a UFO in the shape of a gigantic garbage can, she is a sceptic and there to disprove the ghost’s existence. Her job is to explain the unexplained.

She is spunky and honest, except when it comes to telling little white lies about her personal life. She is a Christian but doesn’t proselytize. This fact is revealed slowly as the story progresses and the reader learns who she is and what she believes.

She immediately meets a handsome professional rival, named Dax Larue, also from Chicago. Before even arriving at the hotel, she emotionally connects to a taxi driver she calls Tex who becomes her sidekick and fellow adventurer.

Kaytie tells the story in the first person POV and the reader quickly learns how personable and funny she can be. The writing style is clean with snappy prose that has a bit of noir flavor. The setting is pure New Orleans with voodoo queens, stilt shacks in the bayou, and unsavory characters.

The plot has twists and turns that drive the story forward at a fast pace. Trouble keeps coming for Kaytie and never stops until the end of the story. H.L. Ford gives the reader a rollercoaster ride that never gets boring.

The author explains at the end that this is her exploration of faith-based supernatural themes expressing biblically sound principles. The main character believes in one path through Jesus, but she faces the world she lives in wide-eyed, open minded, and filled with humor and joy.

This was a fun and enjoyable read. It deserves a solid 4 stars out of 5.

If you are looking for a supernatural fantasy novel with a strong Christian theme, this book is for you.

Lots of twists and turns to keep you guessing. I really wanted to see Katie be less dependent on the male lead's interest in her, to feel good about herself, but I saw signs by the end that she might get there. Don't settle, Katie. Go be the heroine you are meant to be without him.

More twists than a Red Vine!
A well-written whodunit, with humor and enough twists to keep you guessing all the way to the end. The author has clearly put a lot of research and thought into this intriguing story. Never a dull moment!

Pure joy!

I loved the author's ability to show the story rather than tell it. I felt totally immersed in the location and characters.

I enjoyed reading this book! Although it does talk about spiritual warfare it’s lightly sprinkled in until the end. Very interesting read especially after hearing the writers notes at the end.

Fast, fun, murder-mystery-just what the Voodoo doctor ordered!

Kayte O’Hara, will she find love, will she escape from the evil clutches of a Voodoo Queen, will great treasures be found and will she finally believe in the true supernatural? Fast paced, well written, page turner taking the reader all the way to the Deep South where mystery and gators lurk-a great read.
