A body is discovered outside the halls of residence at The University of North Yorkshire. When the postmortem confirms he died of a drug overdose, the case is closed. But forensic Archaeologist, Dr Mills Sanderson, is concerned that the student's death is related to the weekend trips he makes to the Craven Dales and begins her own enquiries. When there is another death on campus, DS Nina Featherstone is finally given permission to treat the events as suspicious and joins forces with the Leeds Serious Organised Crime unit to investigate.
I am the author of a series of crime novels set in the Yorkshire Dales, featuring Mills Sanderson a young woman trained as a forensic archaeologist. I fell in love with the Dales thirty years ago and enjoy researching the villages and fells for the books. Sense of place is an important aspect of my work. I am a university professor with experience of forensic analysis that informs my writing and I take my research for the books very seriously. There are currently eleven books in the series .
Slightly more grim tone to this one, as county lines are evil. I knew what was going on before the characters did, but maybe only because we work with a youth charity and have had training on county lines. Nigel and Nina are more sympathetic characters than Mills these days and it was great (if scary) to see Nina really excelling in her job. There are still avoidable spelling and grammar slips but I'm used to them now... I'll be very sad when I get to the end of the series.
