Long-distance runner Kate is on a routine training run when the zombie virus descends on her hometown in Northern California.
Stricken with panic as events unravel around her, Kate contacts her son, Carter— only to discover he’s trapped in his college dorm surrounded by the undead.
Kate is frantic to get to Carter. The only problem? His college is two hundred miles away. The freeways are blocked by zombies and government blockades.
Running becomes the only means of travel, but Kate has never run so far before. As she is pursued by zombies and plagued by injury, hunger, and fatigue, getting to Carter and staying alive seem impossible.
I loved this story and loved every single character. My husband plays squash, why is this relevant? When you get to the part about tennis racquets you’ll understand how annoyed I was. Also, I’ve swum in the ocean. Never while naked. Why is this relevant? When you read where the woman was sitting on the sand completely starkers you’ll understand! Loved the story but these two things tell me that while the author loves running, and knows all about chafing she doesn’t understand about sand and crevices of the human body variety. Am I saying don’t read this series? Not on your life. Read it - it’s brilliant but just be aware of those two things.
I really enjoy this series. Niles is training for a 100 mile ultra, which I had never heard of before, when he stumbles across the beginning of the end. He must decide if he will help or just continue running for himself. I loved how even in his run for life he still appreciates the beauty around him. While ultra running is new to me I appreciated the little lessons included in the novella. It is an unusual look at the zombie apocalypse through a group's survival led by a female ultra marathon runner. I love the relationships of the characters and how they are working through their new life and their baggage from before. Kate and her crew from Crestcreek as they try to get to Fort Ross before their friends fall to a fate worse than the zombies.....a horrible gang set on turning them into slaves. Picot does a great job of coming up with interesting predicaments to put our group in as well as creative and dangerous ways to save themselves. The characters are fully developed and we learn reasons to admire and care for them. I received a copy free ARC and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
I have Muscular dystrophy, so running is something I no longer can do. So I wasn't sure if I would like these books. I completely enjoyed these books. I learned quite a bit about running. Learned that as a teen when I still could run I ran a Marathon for muscular dystrophy, 26.2 miles which almost killed me and the other students who ran. I didn't realize that constituted a Marathon! Regardless, if you are a runner or just a couch potato this series was awesome! Highly, recommend these books and this imaginative author! A great new story in a Zombie genre that doesn't disappoint!
....one outstanding box set!!! At first I didn't think that I'd like it, because one thing that really dislike (well, after I got out of the U.S. Army), is RUNNING!!!! But before the first chapter was read, I knew this was going to be a fantastic read!!! And I was right!!! If you like an apocalyptic story with zombies and LOADS of action, thrills and even a smidgen of romance, then this series is for you!!! I'm now going to read the other stories associated with it!!! Sit back and enjoy a great read!!! You won't regret it!!!!
As a retired marathoner, & occasional runner of ridiculous distances, the series really brought back memories. Kate and I could definitely dish the tea with our individual war stories. For the non runner reader please know that the running described in the story is very realistic. If you are thinking of purchasing this series I would highly encourage you to. Great characters, pulse pounding action, a incredible heart at the core of the series. Bravo to Camille Picott! Bravo!
I’ve had his box set in my TBR list for a while. And am so I glad I decided to read it now. Once I started it I couldn’t put it down…the story just sucked me right in. The action starts almost immediately and never really stops until the last chapter is over. The cast of characters is amazingly well written. People I wish I could meet in real life. You absolutely must give this series a read! I just wish here had been more!!!!
This is a brilliant set to read. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and action with wonderful world building. Can't wait to read what the author brings out next. Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
I found myself absolutely immersed in Kate's journey and life with her new family. While carrying on my own ultra reading challenge I loved every page more as I carried on. I laughed was inspired and completely broke down crying at parts, that is how enveloped I was in these stories. Awesome read.
So much fun (and a whole mess if suffering!) Seriously, loved the psychology and fitness angle, even though I am tragically not a runner. Listened to the audio odd book 1, narrator lost me on book two...just didn't handle the various voices well. Much more fun to read.
A slightly different take on the zombie apocalypse!! It made the book interesting and fun to read!! It’s a page turner. The story makes you want to keep reading king after you should have gone to bed!! Makes you want I learn more about the communities and how they survive!!
What a great series! I am super sad to not being able to read more about Mama Bear, Ben and all the little *h*theads! The characters are so well developed and you feel like they are your friends. Very face paced and some super gory parts. Also some really sad parts.
I loved this series!! It just got better and better! Very interesting.. I was not sure how the running was going to go but I think it was used information and was cool how she turned these college kids into runners! I would love one more book to see how their relationship goes with their neighbors and to find our kid out there!
I enjoyed this epic of a rollercoaster immensely. Well written characters with enough danger to keep you on the edge of your seat. I’m pulling out my never use running shoes as we speak. Be like Kate.
I really enjoyed this book and will look for other books by her! Her action scenes had me practically biting my fingernails. Fitting her knowledge of marathon running, etc. into the story made it interesting as well as very INTENSE!
This series grabbed me once I started. The story looked interesting while the topic of running didn’t much light a spark. Two minutes in was hooked. My biggest disappointment is I finished them and I want to know more,!!
You have to be a fan of zombie apocalypse to read this, but having said that, you will fall in love with the characters. You won’t want it to end, and maybe if there are enough great reviews we could hope for another book.
When quiet is better, this is the book you want. It kept me interested through all 4 books. Trust me that harder then it sounds. I fell in love with the characters and still love them now. Good job to the author.
These books kept me up way too late at night. They were just way to hard to put down. These books are a fantastic entry into the Zombie lexicon. The characters are engaging and the action is relentless. All around an easy 5 stars.
I am so glad you didn’t kill off alot of the survivors. This is the first time I have read any of your books. The survivor’s are true badasses. Kate is a real badass. I will be reading more of your books..
I loved this series so much. I couldn't put it down. I also read Foot Soldier and enjoyed the writing very much. I will be reading more from this author. I am hoping that there will be a story for Reed.
I loved this story. It is exciting and scary. It has great characters and a unique method of survival in a zombie apocalypse. You won't want to miss this series.
I was sorry when it ended. All four books keep you wanting more. I can only hope that Ms. Picott will continue this story on some day. Get the boxset. You will not be disappointed.
