These past few months I've fallen into the rabbit hole of Chinese danmei. I've read maybe fifty by now and "Those Years in Quest of Honor Mine" is easily one of my favorites. I found the characters to be unique and consistent, with a strong and healthy relationship that avoids the tired old tropes but was also very romantic and devoted. The political intrigue was very interesting, though I will admit had me a bit lost at the beginning. I found the side characters lovable and was very invested in their eventual fates. All in all, I wholeheartedly enjoyed reading it, in no small part thanks to the wonderful fan translation. With the popularity of "The Untamed" I expect Chinese danmei will experience an influx of new readers and I would recommend TYQHM without a doubt.

Warning to new readers: Chinese novels, especially historical ones such as this, deal with a lot of titles and names that may be unfamiliar to Western readers. I've found sticking to it makes it easier as you go along, but I understand this may be a big detractor to some.

★★★★★ [5/5 stars]

I've been reading modern danmei consecutively for the past months and decided to take a break from it and pick this historical novel up. This has been on my list for a long time now and after finishing this, I can now totally understand all the good reviews. In my honest opinion, this is definitely one of the best historical danmei I've ever read.

The MC (Zhong Wan) has this shamelessness in him that was actually cultivated after enduring being at the lowest for so long. He was from a noble family and considered the reincarnation of the god of literature for having an innate gift in academics. But because of a power struggle and imperial fights, he ended up finding himself in a mud, completely and utterly humiliated. He lost his status and became a slave overnight. Because of all he had been through, he learned to ingratiate in order to raise and support his younger foster siblings, gradually getting used to his broken reputation. But despite all of that, the MC was the kind of shameless character that still finds himself blushing while letting his mouth spouts brazen nonsense. He was actually an effortlessly funny and likeable character. He was also so genuine and caring that you really can't stop yourself from loving him. His shamelessness sometimes reminded me of Wei Wuxian.

The ML (Yu She), on the other hand, was considered a lunatic by most of the people. He was once an obedient, filial and righteous youth but because of some specific, heavy reasons, he changed a lot in the past few years as if he was a wholly different person. His temperament worsen and he didn't regard his own life at all. His mentality was 'if he dies, then he dies, but he would drag everyone with him'. This kind of attitude in a character actually makes me so anxious because of his unpredictability for his own safety. He often has bouts of fits when his mental state is unstable. He would act aggressive and crazy and that was part of his illness. But this mentality and this illness was gradually fixed after meeting the MC again after years of being apart. He slowly found the meaning of life again. He was also kind of a tsundere and the MC's shamelessness and straightforwardness was put to use. His teenager self reminded me so much of the teenager Lan Wangji.

Both of the MC and ML's personality actually complemented each other so well. They both encountered an equally painful past that they both didn't deserve. They were connected from the past to the present and their entanglement cannot be undone anymore, one can feel the profound sincerity of their affection. They loved each other so beautifully and deeply. The chemistry between them is so palpable and their antics made my stomach hurts from laughing so much. They also once had this hilarious and a not-angsty-at-all misunderstanding in their relationship that made me wheezed. They've actually become one of my favorite couples.

What I like about this novel aside from the wonderful execution of the plot and the amazing characterization is the perfect timing of humor in the midst of angst. I remember finishing a particular chapter where it was so heartbreaking and my tears were literally flowing down my face and after just literally a second, in just a snap, I actually choked from laughing. I read a comment after that chapter that says it reminded them so much of the anime Gintama (which I highly agreed) in terms of throwing an unexpected humor while you were still heavily emotional, but not in a forced way. It was so natural that you would just find yourself having a mood swings but you still feel great. There were times when I literally prepared myself for the angst but maybe the author really didn't want her readers to stay depressed for too long because she can actually turn the atmosphere around in a completely different direction with no effort in just a single chapter. The emotional whiplash is too strong in this novel.

Seriously, I highly recommend this novel to everyone! It's so great and definitely so worth it!! Just trigger warning for suicidal thoughts.

I laughed a lot reading this book. It has one of the best plot premises ever, and the author builds on them with humor and wit, while introducing a very loveable MC.

It's not a perfect book, but it's one of those that give me such a reading bliss I can't help smiling every time I think about them.

This is probably one of the most well-balanced books I have read this year. It had the right amount of angst and humour to keep things entertaining. The politics in this book is on the heavier side compared to other books but the author also put a lot of effort in the development of the relationship and romance between Zhong Wan (MC) and Yu She (ML).

I loved how shameless the MC was and some of the misunderstandings between him and the ML were really ridiculous that they were funny. But more than that, I loved the way they both genuinely had each other in their hearts. The way they took care of each other and had each others' backs despite all the challenges that were thrown at them made me feel so warm inside. These two had gone through hell in their youth and I was so happy that they finally got to be happy together in the end.

The side characters were also memorable, especially Steward Feng, Xuan Congxin and Lin Si. My personal favourite side character was Xuan Congxin because she was so badass and a really mature female character despite her age.

3.5⭐️

By no means a bad story, but honestly this didn’t work so well with me. I like comedy. I like angst. But angst and comedy have to be done well to work, otherwise you get whiplashes and feel like the characters have split personalities. One moment they’re sophisticated & smart people scheming cleverly, and then they turn around and behave like naive children. Also, one moment we’re reading highly angsty backstory, and next the author throws another comedy that nullifies the previous effect. I’d definitely like this better, had this been a more serious story.

3.5 stars. This is kind of a comedy despite the dark story - political intrigue, murder, tragedy, etc.

This is a bit like a tragicomedy, if there is such a word - crack-ish with zany moments, but serious when it needed to be, full of mystery and political intrigue, with the past being the key to understanding the present. The political intrigues were really fun to read - a large part of my drive to continue this novel was to unravel the suspense and mystery behind Yu She's past and identity. I even drew a relationship tree to figure out all the different bits of information and how everyone related to each other. Lots of fun. I also loved the crack and comedy between the main couple lol. It's hilarious. There was also emotional angst and more serious and intimate moments.

Unfortunately the suspense that kept me going kind of dies off at about 70%. Yu She's past is revealed, and the last 30% is just a bunch of political schemes as he and Zhong Wan manoeuvre the other characters to where they want. It felt like the novel was steadily increasing in tension, and then plateaus at about 70%.

Still, quite a fun read if you're looking for something a bit tragic but also a bit comedic.

I created a whole new shelf just so I can write this review, because when I dnf a book so early on I just let it go and forget it completely, but I really want this to stay here and that people going into this book know my thoughts, because there was a very specific point in the story that proved to be to uncomfortable and wrong for me, I just couldn't stand it.
I'm abandoning this in episode 30, and the thing that made me dnf this is that there's a constant chat of SA thrown in a "funny" and/or supper cassual manner (exept for this one time that is victim blaming at it's peak), I really don't get why no other reviewer has mentioned it, there's even a review that says the relationship is so healthy, thing that had me exited to read this, so I'm very dissapointed. Also, aside from the SA element, Yu She is very violent, so Zhong Wan often wonders if this or that made the other angry, or if it will, and what will he do to him, and such, I didn't like it at all.
Here, an example of the SA element, the worst til chapter 29(a spoiler ahead):
.
.
.
"Yu She knit his brows. "I kissed him because he didn't conduct himself with dignity!"
He almost convinced Steward Feng.
Steward Feng mumbled to himself "Yes, it's Young Master Zhong himself who flirted IN HIS DREAMS so well. He actualy called out Heir's courtesy name in his dream? If this isn't being frivolous, then what is it? Heir is young. When would he meet this kind of person? It's inevitable he would be confused by Young Master Zhong! That he dared to say this in his dream makes it clear he's allowing Heir to do things to him!"
This character (the steward) is also angry in his mind that Yu She DIDN'T DO MORE, he in a point thinks "He truly deserved it, but your honored self ONLY kissed him"
.
The lighter stuff (that I was very uncomfortable but willing to let go and enjoy the story) is that Zhong Wan very often wanders if Yu She is going to r word him (said with other words) very very lightly.

I read in the author's notes that it took her 16 years to finish this novel and it does show! In the sense of political intrigue, it gave me strong Golden Stage vibes and the resolution was wonderful. I LOVED how the protagonists refused to compromise and basically ended up gay regents to the new Emperor LOL!

-- like one reviewer said, Zhong Wan is definitely even more hilariously shameless than Wei WuXian.
-- my favourite scenes in the whole novel are definitely him flirting and those hilarious scenes with the porn written about them! and that desk sex!!
-- he's one of my favourite protagonists in the Chinese web novels for sure
-- HOWEVER I couldn't get a strong sense of Yu She. He was also a breath of fresh air after all the posessive demonic dudes w monster dicks (don't growl, Mo Ran, I love you...), but the way he seems to treat ZW as a concubine at times is just so heteronormative? and those endless pregnancy jokes are just weird...

but it's more of a cultural thing, I guess, I'm just too much of a Western reader. And I'd definitely speed up the pace between Ch. 50 and 80 - the middle felt really damn slow.

But still worth reading, esp if you like Golden Stage and/or WWX being an idiot flirt.

I found this book after reading a post on Reddit asking for characters more shameless than Wei WuXian. Since WWX and LWJ are some of my favorite characters, I had to check out this story, which dozens of people agreed was one of the few they'd seen so far that topped WWX for shamelessness. I was not disappointed! The things Zhong Wan said and did, and the reaction of Yu ZiYou and Steward Feng had me laughing. The scene where Zhong Wan is planning out a future encounter with Yu ZiYou, and gets so carried away by his imagination that he ends up asking Yu ZiYou to be gentler with him (despite the fact that Yu ZiYou hasn't even said or done anything) still makes me laugh when I think about it.

If you are like me and like to at least know if a book has a happy, sad, or bittersweet ending, this one ends happily for the two main characters. Not so much for some of the secondary characters, but what else can you expect from a palace intrigue plot line?

I LOVED this book. Zhong Wan is, as my best friend would say, horny on main and causes so much trouble b/c of it, but somehow Yu She loves him. They two of them are amazing together and this story is so much awesome. Like I said, I LOVED this book.

The plot is not the strongest aspect of this book and somewhere past the 70% mark it becomes very much blah. But I'd still recommend it for the characters and their hilarious and idiosyncratic interactions.

I have very mixed feelings about this book.

**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**

For the first half of the book, I was so confused about who everyone was, and it wasn't until things were repeated a couple times that I finally understood how the main characters and various side characters were related. The author could've been more clear about this right from the start. Also, I didn't like the Zhong Wan's initial attitude of flirting outrageously with Yu She (sometimes it felt like he was just throwing himself at Yu She), and also how he lets Yu She get away with anything in YS's bouts of craziness wasn't cool.

Something else that drove me crazy was all the miscommunication, a lot of which stemmed from Steward Feng. I applaud his efforts to be matchmaker, but his character made some disturbing recommendations to YS on how to treat ZW which I didn't appreciate. He felt like a fangirl shipping the couple that was determined to make the relationship happen regardless of what YS had to do. Their dates at the Third Prince's funeral prayers were a bit odd too. I understand perhaps the author had trouble coming up with ways to get them to meet, but having their dates and even their first kiss happen at one of the prayer sessions for a newly deceased prince was quite strange.

All in all, I had a lot of problems with the first part of the story until they sort of get together and Yu She's crazy bouts and fits are less frequent. Their interactions become much sweeter and we get a better idea of where the author is taking the story. The story in the second half focuses on how YS and ZW watch out for each other after YS joins the fight for crown prince and is much more reasonable than the story in the first half. I was happy to see YS finally decide to care about his life and fight for the crown prince position because he's concerned about what will happen to ZW if he dies.

I didn't particularly care for Yu She, but I liked Zhong Wan (except for how he kept shamelessly throwing himself at YS) and felt a lot of sympathy for everything that's happened to him. He's a brilliant individual who could've gone far as a government official, but unfortunately the fall of his birth family followed by the false accusations against Prince Ning's family didn't leave him in a good spot. And even afterwards, his friend and charge since childhood, Xuan Rui, didn't fully believe in him and a simple ploy was able to get Xuan Rui to lose all trust in him. Until ZW got together with YS, there was never anyone to watch out for him, which made it all the sweeter when YS does help SW out.

I liked how the story ultimately fell out, with YS and ZW as the regents of the next emperor. This way they don't have to worry about the next crown prince if YS had been emperor instead.

There wasn't much that stood out in terms of specific scenes or lines, but I thought the below were sort of sweet:

Since he had gone to Qian An, everything had fallen onto Zhong Wan’s shoulders. He had no one to discuss with and no one to rely on. Zhong Wan had long since gotten used to taking the blame for anything first, regardless of what had happened.

“These years.” Yu She threw the letters and gift list in his hand into the brazier. The flames engulfed them. He softly scoffed. “I haven’t lived smoothly, but neither have you, right?”

Yu She poked at the charcoal. “If you’re unused to this, don’t understand it, can’t comprehend it, can’t sense it, or sense it but feel like there’s something else involved… then I’ll be a bit more clear.”

Yu She gazed at Zhong Wan. “I’m caring for you.”

----------

Young Yu She stared at that page of poetry and thought back on those three months of blurred and mindless accompaniment. He felt like he had just woken up from a long dream.

Only then did Yu She realize what Zhong Wan had been saying those past few days.

Zhong Wan, who could barely breathe from carrying the burden of Prince Ning’s estate, couldn’t say anything to him. However, this person happened to be the type who couldn’t hide his romantic nature. Using a page from “The Book of Songs,” he smiled at Yu She from far away. With a dash of longing and a mostly joking tone, he sincerely asked one only question: although I do not go to you, why do you not come to me?

Those words I could not speak. You must know what they are now, right?

Zhong Wan couldn’t hold himself back anymore. He broke down and started crying.

Dnf at chapter 43.
I'm really not connecting with the story.

The mehhhhh stuff:

1. It's politics heavy - so i wasn't expecting to like it in the first place. In fact, i was skimming through the politics without paying much attention. I don't know what's wrong with me, but i find politics in fiction really, really boring. Any time someone in a book mentions something even remotely politics-related, my mind loses all its abilities to focus and drives away. You'd think i'd enjoy all this - my major in university literally is history, so, like, i'm into historical stuff - but fictional history hardly ever works for me.

So, i was reading this book purely as a romance novel 😂😅

2. The writing style is so... simplistic? I'm used to reading chinese web-novels with beautiful descriotions, elaborate word choices etc. I generally think that writing style is crucial for a book, and its simplicity can affect my reading experience in a negative way. The writing made the novel feel like a shell of a story, a first draft maybe. It didn't feel like a complete product, that's the problem.

3. I think the motivation wasn't established properly. I couldn't believe in chatacters' behaviour because it wasn't explained in the text and felt like something that the author wrote out of plot convenience. (Which might make sense later in the story, but i'm not reading any futher)

4. The interactions between the two leads are so forced, unnatural and unmotivated, and generally fanfiction-like. The romantic scenes come out of nowhere, like that time when they happen to sleep in the same bed for no reason. Or that time yu she was undressing zhong wan when he was sick. So out of place.

5. Connected to my previous points - why do they even like each other? Especially zhong wan - we are constantly told that he's into yu she, but it's, again, so unmotivated.

6. In general, i didn't get the chemistry, and their scenes together lacked intimacy.

7. Kinda off-topic, but the pregnancy jokes. Just no.

There were a couple points that i liked though.

1. For example, yu she's character is genuinely scary. And he's also genuinely suicidal. He seemed like a legit crazy person. It felt refreshing in a way. But i'm kind of worried that in later chapters he would be revealed to be faking his craziness, which would be a pity.

2. Zhong wan's family dynamics were a lot of fun. Like him forcing his brother-type person (the names are escaping me, sorry😣) to take drugs which would make him sick. It felt weirdly endearing. And xuan congxin, being a badass pre-teen girl and simultaneously the smartest person in the family.

3. Zhong wan being constantly sick. I like sickly characters, i can't help it.

4. One of the scenes made my soul moved - i'm referring to the parting scene seen in the flashbacks. This is the only scene that actually was deep amd multilayered and showed the intimacy between the two leads.

Rumor has it... Prince Yu she is obsessed with the God of literature Zhong Wan …and his affections are beyond brotherhood. Talk about a scandal in historical times. The news of their illicit affair has spread all over, but who is the source of all the gossip? None other than our shameless MC Zhong Wan and the reason behind it all makes for an entertaining story of betrayal, conspiracies and love.

Yu she and Zhong Wan are the definition of shameless and the amount of second hand embarrassment these two stir up is amusing. Two petty but lovable clowns in truth. They flirt in the most funny ways and in inappropriate places at that. They play games and the chase is fun to watch. All jokes aside, they are both innocent on the inside but pretend to be lascivious and paint themselves black.

Zhong Wan and Yu She are both reckless, stubborn and unbalanced to a degree. They both have trauma they have yet to deal with and are dangerous when pushed to the edge. They have no qualms with hurting themselves or value their lives per se. I feel like their relationship with each other is kind of an escape/distraction but hopefully a source of healing as well. I like the contrast of the characters. They are both hurt individuals. One hides it with a smile and perseveres for the sake of others. The other has resigned to despair and lost faith in humanity

Palace politics never disappoint with the cold blooded and messed up family drama all in the name of power struggles. The selling point here is the comedy and awesome sense of humour mixed in.I f you are not into historicals at least give this a try for that reason alone. This is romantic but in a messed up or uncomfortable way at times if critically analysed too deeply(s*ave contracts etc). It is not perfect but it is truly a funny and unique read.

this took years off my life. i enjoyed it for sure but i did feel like the court / palace intrigue wasn’t the most well written - it was very telenovela, soap opera core, which i guess is par for the course. however, i always like it when the palace intrigue has some underlying theme or core message, which i felt this one lacked. instead, everything kind of just… gets wrapped up in a little expository sequence at the end. this is kind of how i felt about longlegs (the movie) - the tension builds up only to never break or be resolved. it just kind of … ends…

i also did find that the romance was ancillary to the plot. although i liked the schemer4schemer, freak4freak thing that zhong wan and yu she have going on, i did feel like their characterisations were a bit baffling at times, and i disliked that they had to do some retroactive stuff where zhong wan is like… actually since the moment i laid eyes on you i loved you… i think it’s actually stronger if they were ambivalent about each other at first AND THEN slowly fell for each other. the way it was written just feels like a cop out and playing to frankly unnecessary tropes

i also understand that yu she is going through a mental breakdown of some sort, but the wild variations in his mood, temperament, and even rationality (particularly in the beginning) made him feel like a very ludicrous character, who would start yelling out of nowhere, and made it hard to comprehend his motivations or true intentions. even towards the end i could never really understand him, i disliked that his entire personality at the end was just: i want zhong wan forever heart eyes star emoji. like girl, get up. have some ambitions or like, policies you care about????

like the reason i cant get into the actual plotline is partially bec idk whether i agree w their policy line or not. like maybe the old emperor was like the people’s champion?? maybe yu she has really fascist politics??? why am i rooting for him??? lol

also the translation i read was all over the place lol
