Robert Murray M’Cheyne was a 19 th century preacher who is known not only for his powerful preaching, but for his personal holiness. Jordan Stone examines the force behind this holiness – his love for and communion with Christ. M’Cheyne prayed for, preached for and pursued holiness because he understood it to be the mature expression of love to Christ. Let us allow his unrelenting passion for piety convict our contemporary complacency and help us learn how to abide in the love of Christ.
Very well-written, diligently researched, and informative without being inaccessible. For anyone wanting to learn about Robert Murray M’Cheyne, study Scottish Presbyterianism in the first half of the nineteenth century, or gather illustrations from a life well-lived in service to Christ, this is a great book. The chapter on the Sabbath-Railroad Controversy was perhaps the most interesting and unique.
Excellent and brief historical study of M’Cheyne’s spirituality and the motive behind it. As a reader, this book inspired more love and zeal to Christ than many other books that I have read recently. It is full of deep and challenging quotes that ultimately point you to the beauty of Christ and happy holiness Christians have in the Beloved.
Note: As I still think through the Lord’s Day, M’Cheyne made his sabbatarian view extremely attractive.
5 because it’s extremely edifying and worth your time, especially those going into pastoral ministry.
Really enjoyed this book. I had never read about M'Cheyene before reading this book but learning about him, his ministry, and his piety was wonderful. As someone new to confessional Presbyterianism, it is great learning about faithful men from our tradition and this is a good book examining an exemplary minister.
Full disclosure: I read this as part of the course requirements for a class with the author at Reformed Theological Seminary. Nonetheless, it was an enjoyable read.
First time reading a book like this but I really enjoyed it. Highly recommend for anyone wanting to go into ministry or looking for a new church. This’ll give you a good idea of what to look for in a good pastor.
