A feel-good read about family loyalties and second chances set on Canada’s picturesque Cape Breton Island, this book is perfect for those who enjoy sweet romances, countryside landscapes, and heartwarming endings.
Emma Copeland’s second marriage lasted only nine months. When Emma turned 50, she promised herself she wouldn’t be one of those lonely old divorcées who dated and never settled down, so she rushed into a second marriage with smooth-talking Andrew Schönfeld. When he dies suddenly, Emma loses everything.
With her life in shambles, Emma turns to her first husband, Dr. John Havisham, the father of her two girls. The only problem is, John is now married to Linette, the woman with whom he had had an affair when he was still married to Emma, and Linette despises Emma. John agrees to help out Emma despite Linette’s vociferous disapproval by letting Emma stay in his cottage on Cape Breton Island.
As the beauty of Pleasant Bay and the peacefulness of Songbird Cottage begin to heal Emma, she gets more shocking news.
Join Emma as she begins a new life on Cape Breton Island and get to know her family and the friendly locals.
This is the first book in the Pleasant Bay series.
Now an Amazon bestselling author, Sylvia Price is an author of Amish and contemporary romance and women’s fiction. She especially loves writing uplifting stories about second chances!
Sylvia was inspired to write about the Amish as a result of the enduring legacy of Mennonite missionaries in her life. While living with them for three weeks, they got her a library card and encouraged her to start reading to cope with the loss of television and radio, giving Sylvia a new-found appreciation for books.
Although raised in the cosmopolitan city of Montréal, Sylvia spent her adolescent and young adult years in Nova Scotia, and the beautiful countryside landscapes and ocean views serve as the backdrop to her contemporary novels.
After meeting and falling in love with an American while living abroad, Sylvia now resides in the US. She spends her days writing, hoping to inspire the next generation to read more stories. When she’s not writing, Sylvia stays busy making sure her three young children are alive and well-fed.

Short and pleasant. This is a really short book, but really nice to read. Emma really has to start again from scratch. Never easy. But she has help. Her ex-husband, her daughters and her new friends around Pleasant Bay. Well written, but maybe a bit too short. So, I'm of to reading the second book! I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
i read this book as part of an arc program. This the first book in the Pleasant Bay series. In this book, Emma and her daughters used to visit her ex-husband's cottage in Pleasant Bay. She met her neighbor Sam and felt a connection to him, but things didn't work out. Now 18 years later, Emma's world has crashed after her new husband died and she was left with nothing. Emma returns to the cottage and rekindles her friendship with Sam. Emma also tries to rebuild her career and find a way to start her life over. I really enjoyed this book. I live in Cape Breton where this book is set and could picture the coastline in my mind as i read this book. I love that area and was happy to learn the author loved it too through her descriptions. I really liked Emma, she was stronger than she thought she was and she learned it is never too late to start over and find love. Sam was great and i think he always loved Emma and wished she would have returned years before.
This is a well-written book about survival. When her second husband dies just nine months after marriage, leaving her destitute despite the wealth she'd brought into the marriage, her first husband responded by allowing her to use the summer vacation home. And she worked hard to pull her life back together, successful with the help of her daughters and an old neighborhood friend. She managed to start a business that benefitted her neighbors, a website-creating cottage industry. When her first husband was involved in an accident, his new wife responded by evicting her. Only some fast work by those who'd helped her settle in could keep her from being homeless. Will she survive this latest test of courage? Great book! I read the sequel before I read the original, so it was a bit confusing at first, but still a very goodread! Thanks, Ms Price!
A short story worth reading in The Songbird Cottage series. Emma and her husband John separate and she heads to Songbird Cottage to get her life on track. Sam an old friend from Cape Breton where she is headed is waiting for her as she turns in the driveway. They connect and spend lots of time together. Bad news comes that Emma’s ex husband has been hit by a drunk driver and is in very serious condition in the hospital out of town. Sam drives Emma taking about 6 hours to get there. John’s ex wife won’t let her near John. She is very mean to Emma. Emma takes the bus back to Cape Breton to The Songbird Cottage. Her ex’s wife kicks Emma out of the cottage and friends give her a place to stay at a B & B...in the end her ex husband pulls through the surgery and she gets back the cottage. Looking forward to the 2nd book in this series!

After her husband’s death, Emma is dealing with the worst side of what life and people can throw at someone. At her lowest, she returns to Cape Breton, where she reconnects with Sam. With him at her side, she realizes what’s most important in life, and that’s definitely not financial security… I was a little taken aback by Sam’s harsh words towards Emma. Though he was right, I think Emma needed time to grieve the life she thought she had. Realizing she had been conned by her late husband, Emma probably needed to vent her frustration and hurt. I don’t see how she could have healed if keeping it all in. Nonetheless, the plot flows easily, and the characters are appealing. It’s a great story that shows what is most important in life.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is book one in The Pleasant Bay Series. Emma's second husband has just died after them only being married for nine months and now she has lost everything so Emma asks her first husband John who was not only the father to her two girls but also married to the woman who he had an affair while married to Emma if he can help her. Emma is now staying in the cottage on Cape Breton Island hoping she can heal and get her life sorted out. Wow what a great start to a new series and I really enjoyed reading it as it was so well written and I can't wait to read the next book. This is the first book that I have read by Sylvia Price but not the last and I recommend you read it and you will not be disappointed. I Voluntarily Reviewed an ARC Copy of this book.
While I am more of a cozy mystery reader, I do like a good love story now and then. I found this book a real emotional read which is unusual in my opinion. The mark of a goid writer will make the reader experience emotions right along with the characters in a book, and that was what I experience with this book. I felt shock, sadness, anger, frustration right along with Emma, the main character of this book. I also loved the description of the lovely area in which th story is told. I even cheered when Emma kindled a relationship from the past. A shirt read but one packed with emotions that a good book and writer produce. I look forward to reading more in the series.

I received an ARC to review: a sweet drama-romance, The Songbird Cottage is the story of a middle-aged woman, Emma, who has been unlucky in love. The love and support of her 2 adult daughters and the friendship and support from Pleasant Bay's residents is what gets her through a tough season, ultimately leading to a new chapter in her life. Sylvia narrates the heartache and rock-bottomness of Emma's life in such a way that the reader feels her pain and frustration - but likewise, her joy and contentment that follows 😊
Exceptionally Short Women's Fiction This book is exceptionally short for a fiction piece that covers 30 some years of a woman's life. It is written like a short story with no unnecessary parts or bits. The story is very good, but I found myself wanting more detail and more time for explanations. There are some fairly detailed things that beg for more detail and don't get it. I am off to read book 2 and I hope that it is a bit longer. I received this ARC book for free from Booksprout and this is my honest review.
This Book is an excellent example how the years and circumstances can be overwhelming to a woman. As Emma returns to Songbird's Cottage, broken and defeated, she begins to see how a small town community comes along side her to help her rebuild her life and meanwhile restore her self worth as things change for her little by little! I love the way this is a very real example of one of the beauties of these small towns! Of course mixing in beautiful scenery and the growing love with an old friend makes this the perfect start to a new series!
Emma faced a variety of situations after her divorce from John. Their daughters staid with him and his second wife Linette during school terms. Her own thriving business kept her busy when she wasn’t spending summers with the girls at the cottage John had bought for family vacations
An embarrassing encounter sends her running away from the cottage, until financial downturns subsequent to the death of her second husband bring Emma back to Songbird Cottage
Are more chances hiding in the depths of the cottage?
Emma is at a loss when her husband has a heart attack and dies right before her eyes. When approached by his children from a previous marriage, she is devasted by what they tell her. She also learns a lot of disturbing facts when she is confronted by the lawyer. Penniless and homeless, she returns to Songbird Cottage to live out the rest of her life. Many things take place and when the father of her daughters dies, it starts an upheaval that no one can imagine. But – they are in for a big surprise. Nicely done, Sylvia Price.
This book was sad. The heartache and misfortune that Emma endured from first her ex-husband then the man that conned her and stole all her money. Luckily she still had a good relationship with her ex that he allowed her a place to stay. But his new wife is vindictive and angry after all the years. Good thing the people that live in the remote area band together and help her. Glad she and Sam found their way back to each other. Looking forward to what happens next.
I received an ARC of this book for an honest review.
An amazing heartwarming story about loyalty, 2nd chances, heartache, greed, hope and new beginnings. I take my hat off to Emma for going through such turbulence and then being able to turn things around for the good. She would never have been able to succeed if it wasn't for the love and support of her children and the caring community who rallied around her in her time of need.
I just could not put this book down. Thank you for a delightful read.
This is a wonderful, emotion filled story. Sylvia Price has a way of writing a short story that gives you the whole story! Her characters and plot are well written and her stories are clean. This is different from her Amish stories but are well worth the read. I loved Emma’s story and I am looking forward to the next one! I received an advance copy of this book from the author, however, I voluntarily wrote an honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.
The first book in the Pleasant Bay series a well written story where Emma Copeland will have her life turned upside down again. Dr. John Havisham her ex-husband lets her stay at Songbird Cottage to heal, but he is married to one very nasty woman. I can't wait to read the next book. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This was a pleasant, quick read (lengthwise it's a short novella). Sylvia gives readers a good understanding of Emma's character and feelings while acquainting us with her two daughters and her love interest, Sam. Then she fills it out with descriptions of the gorgeous Maine scenery and the friendly, do unto others, neighbors who inhabit the town.
Emma Copeland love life isn't very happy, luckily she has 2 daughters she loves very much. when things become worse, she refuges in Cape Breton Island. the Songbird cottage is cosy, full of memories and she works hard to restart her life. the book has nice cover, lovely story.
I had the opportunity to review an advanced copy of The Songbird Cottage by Sylvia Price. I did enjoy the friendships in this story! Widowed and homeless, Emma returns to Songbird Cottage and finds a caring community, a new career and another chance at love. I do recommend this book!
This is a new author to me and the story is a quick, clean read. A story of hope, new beginnings, small-town dynamics and a HEA, with a bit of jealousy and bitterness thrown in by the current wife of Emma’s ex.
A feel good and charming story. Entertaining and witty read. Good dialogue and situations to keep you turning to the next page. Great characters and story that keeps you hooked until the last page! Good read.

A sweet little book perfect for bedtime reading or to wile away a lazy afternoon. I felt as though I knew the characters like friends by the time I finished Book One. I can't wait to start the next in the series. Charming and utterly endearing.
Wonderful story of life struggles and love.i highly recommend reading this story. I enjoyed it so much. I just couldn't put down. Love the characters especially Sam and Emma. Beautifully written. Can't wait to start the next book.
