Gabrielle Bernstein has been labeled by the New York Times as the next-generation guru. A motivational speaker, life coach, and author, she is expanding the lexicon for the seekers of today and tomorrow. She gives talks and leads seminars throughout the country, is on the Forbes list of the 20 Best Branded Women, and has been featured in media outlets such as Oprah Radio, Marie Claire, Health, Self, CNN, NBC, CBS, FOX, and the Wall Street Journal.
Was pleasantly surprised by this one. Normally her work is a little too light - if I'm reading a self-development book it's because I'm in a rut and need some inspiration/motivation/fresh tactics - but this one was perfect amount of meaty yet light-ish for me right now. Bernstein deals with concepts around panic, anxiety, and overwhelm that require a lot of REAL work to get results. She doesn't pretend that it's easy, and yet makes her "messages" feel approachable and manageable. For example, I have had anxiety for many years and until 2020 was able to manage it with minimal help. Now I'm struggling daily just to function (and deal with the guilt I feel because I'm not "technically" struggling, and have a stable home/family/income). Her six messages are simple and I began applying them in real time as I read and have begun to notice changes. I will be returning back to this Audible Original - and that's something I rarely ever do.
Rolled my eyes a few times at the way things were presented (“it worked for me it will work for you” attitude, the black and white statements about how spirituality is always the answer, or how it is spirituality that saved her from suicide, except, she had the privilege to have a psychiatrist and a therapist at the same time lol… etc.) but if I take it with a grain of salt, it was better than I expected and good messages in it!
Practicing not canceling a person because I dont agree 100% or think they are not getting the full picture & trying to just take what is useful to me and move on lol!!! This book was good for practicing that!!!
I like to call this kind of inspo "foofy enlightenment", but I did find that there were a few tricks that she offered that I will return to in the future that helped me immediately.
One of my least favorite listening/reading experiences from this author. I feel like with this book, she just wrote/spoke in too many definitives. "If you do this, this will happen..." While I absolutely believe we're all connected, and connected to the energy of the universe, it's just not as simple as she suggests. I felt like this one was a money grab.
I went into this blind and was really pleasantly surprised! It builds (by this I mean it reinforces what I've already learned) on many of the meditation books I've read/listened to this year, so that was great. Not a lot of new information for me, but it can't hurt to hear advice and tips again in a different voice. The guided meditations were great.
Since this was written in 2020 during the height of the C-19 pandemic, I think the publisher subtitled with Audiobook Original with "..Move You Through Difficult Times..." but the work is timeless and has more of an every day hopeful and optimistic tone.
I think this might be the first Gabrielle Bernstein work I finished from cover-to-cover, so I will go and seek out her other books again. Follow her on Instagram for some uplifting posts.
A really short book that will give plenty of us to think about and work on to make our lives a little better in hectic times. With a few meditations thrown in and workbooks that you can use at your convenience, the book provides a really strong basis for some self work for positive outcomes.
The lessons in this book are basic truths and certainly helpful. For example, the fact that compassion creates connection and that we receive what we need to know in stillness. However, the book is extremely 'New Agey'. The author seems to be afraid of using the word God. Instead, it is all 'the universe' and universal energy. Her advice is to "let spirit guide you". What spirit?? Like most New Age books, the teachings are actually all truths to be found in (and probably taken from) scripture only that God has been edited out of them. By the way, no - you are not the Guru.
This is a wonderful and quick, inspirational book. It’s filled with lots of ‘feel good,’ vibes and ‘affirmation,’ inspiration. The meditations are soothing and brief.
The teachings shared are easy to retain, which is always important with any kind of self help/spiritual type books. This is a lovely little reminder of practise and expresses simple guidance that can be easily learnt by a novice or a refresher for an experienced person. A refreshing, uplifting read.
Gabbie Bernstein’s books should be listened to as audiobooks. I love her voice and passionate message. This Audible original teaches 6 guiding sutras:
* See through the lens of love. * Surrender to creative solutions. * Inspired action clears the path. * In stillness, we receive. * Compassion creates connection. * You are the guru.
I'm a strong believer that we find certain books and/or audiobooks when we're ready to receive certain messages. I had a tough year in 2022, in the years prior I set up a faulty expectation about what my happiness was supposed to look like, and I ended up getting 2 burnouts in a relatively short period of time then getting diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. When I received my diagnosis I promised to myself that I was going to cherish each day and the small things in my life that makes me happy. But when I started to listen the 'You Are the Guru', I came to the realisation that I was again waiting for some milestones in the distant future to be reached in hope of getting a spark of happiness. Luckily, the audiobook reminded me that I should be a bit more patient with myself, enjoying the process of inspiration and that sometimes you need to take a step back to see the bigger picture and receiving the answers that are already in you.
Gabby inspires me! She always seems to have a message that is so relevant to me at the present moment. Gabby has taught me to trust the universe. This book provides insight into her experiences and she’s vulnerable and honest. I love having control of my life - who doesn’t? However, in many of Gabby’s books I have learned it’s turning inward that allows us to release this willingness to control everything. In this book Gabby writes about the importance of human connection and compassion. My primary takeaway is to surrender to my creativity. I’ve been trying to figure out the best way to follow my passion. Gabby has reiterated that it is as simple as taking that next small step, a subtle shift...and now.
I am an avid Gabby lover and her books Spirit Junkie and The Universe have your Back have been pivotal in my growth as a person. I am a big fan of the book Judgement Detox and have read Miracles Now multiple times. This book was tough to get through. It didn't resonate with me and at times felt forced. Like she had written a book she wasn't yet ready to write. The reference to 'the covid-19 pandemic' over and over felt tone deaf. I don't live in the US but we all went through the same thing together it could have been referenced in a more nuanced manner and using a full title like that I felt ostracising to the audience. Sorry to hear Gabby went through PPD and anxiety. This book still had actionable insights but they didn't feel as geniunely written as in previous works.

In this mini manifesting guide, Gabby presents six mantras to apply to our lives at any time we feel resistance. This Audible Original is particularly timely as we cope with the fear and uncertainty of COVID-19. Gabby shares each mantra, includes examples of how the mantras have helped her surrender during difficult times and also sprinkles in some guided meditation for listeners.
I love everything Gabby produces, and I love this book.
My only grudge is that this is an audiobook available only through Audible. I am frustrated that Gabby limits her message to only those who can afford to pay.
Exactly what I needed to hear and remember in this last third of 2020, and while historic fires and wind quite literally rage and burn around me (I’m in the PacNW). The daily heartbreak of news and pandemic related illness and death, the clear and terrifying resurgence of fascism, and now my beloved forests and fields and mountains on fire... This audiobook isn’t a cure for any of it. Of course it isn’t. But for me it’s a reminder of the spiritual practices I already have in place and a calm and gentle reminder to keep doing the work of presence and stillness.
Loved it. Have heard about Gabrielle Bernstein and her books, but this is my first one and good pick for powerful listening with nice mix of info, sutras, affirmations and meditations. Looking forward to tuning into more of her books as really practical, helpful and clear explanation to follow and accessible. Six sutras/messages that now written and posted proudly on my fridge for daily reminder. Good mix of tips, simple and useable and practical to bring into daily and doable! Highly recommend.
Another wonderful book of guidance by Gabby. I find so connected to her words, she doesn’t smack you over the head with intellect and ground breaking thoughts, she quietly leads you and reminders you of thoughts you’ve already thought before. That’s what I love about her books, it feels like she’s talking to you directly, like a friend giving you a nudge to change habits and look inside yourself. She continues to make her messages have meanings beyond the pages, and I can see her lessons, mantras and messages helping guide me in my daily life.
I’ve struggled a bit with Bernstein’s work in the past — for me it has felt like a lite / slightly saccharine version of heavier-duty teachers and teachings. This one clicked, though. The ideas are accessible but they take a lot of hard work and dedication to implement, and she is clear that that is all on me and you, which is the truth. Audible is making it harder and harder to walk away – there’s now essentially a streaming library, which is how I read this. I will come back to it.
For many years of my life I have looked for the "teacher" who will help me completely change my life and lead me to true spiritual growth.
The lessons she explains:
- See things through the lens of love. - Surrender to creative solutions. - Actions that come from inspiration pave the way for us. - When you are at rest, in peace, is when you receive. - Compassion creates connection. - You are the guru (the teacher).
Meh. I didn't even notice when I finished this book. All of the sudden it wasn't in my list anymore and Audible marked it as finished. Mostly, I feel like if you read a lot of self-help books, they all start to sound the same. Same with this one. The meditation parts might be nice if you're into that sort of thing (I am not, if I wanna meditate I will do so in my chosen circumstances) and I really did not appreciate the author's push for God and the holy divine in a self-help book.
The title originally threw me off but this book was the answer to a lot of things I didn’t realise I was looking for. It’s just the right length at under 4 hours, it makes you feel good and the meditations are excellent and easy to follow, all the chapters are titled on audible so it’s easy to dip into the lessons you need a recap on. Plus Gabby has a great and soothing voice for an audio book. Will definitely listen again and recommend to friends.
The audiobook may seem to say the obvious. However, Bernstein's story surprisingly is powerful enough to help me practice inner peace. She shares her stories of being anxious and obsessive to control. Her struggle helped me face and accept my own. I am not the only one. I can pat myself on the shoulder for being myself.
A short monologue of part sutra part anecdotal spiritual tool-kit. Though I found myself feeling like a block of wood in place where there should be a wheel, I managed to find some gems in these concepts. I kept reminding myself that many of these perspectives are tangential to core beliefs I have and that it isn’t always easy to maintain serenity.
