Micah Regent is a pre-med student in Neo-Hokkaido, just hoping his snarky grandmother's prayer can help him pass an exam.
When two sexy ninja girl statues come to life before his very eyes and start fighting each other, his life will never be the same.
Drawn into a rebel faction by an old friend and his less-than-perfect luck, Micah must not only defy the iron-handed, bucket-headed Society of Monks (and killer nuns), he must uncover the secrets behind the ninja girls and the industria that not only runs the world, but through his veins.
You already know he's going to save the day, so the real question is: how many ninja girls can he marry along the way?
Cultivation and cyberpunk collide in this action-packed harem adventure by Gideon Caldwell, Amazon bestselling author of Dungeon Goddess.
A new series from the pen name of Mr Harmon Cooper, Author Prolific. Yeah!
This is such an easy, enjoyable read, and of course, the guys (and girls) will love it having read about Gideon Caldwell in 'Cherry Blossom Girls'. This would make a fabulous series of graphic novels.
What's not to like? A medical student struggling with his studies, stunning ninja women who could probably cut a fly in half they are that fast, a gadget-orientated friend not seen for a long time, ancient and modern societies (which I love), good and bad monks with killer nuns, and in my humble opinion, a wonderful granny who steals the show. But then that could be because she sounds just like a Scots' granny. Not forgetting the Gideon Caldwell unique selling point™ of underwear shopping and schoolgirl outfits. *wink*
It's a great, fun storyline and keeps the reader entertained. You'll whizz through the pages and immediately want more. I'm so looking forward to book two.
I chose an early copy of this book, which I then voluntarily read and honestly reviewed. All opinions are my own.
Interesting read, enteretaining in its theme, quite the abrupt change at almost the ending when it went from slice-of-life to bloody murder in a fast spin.
Good but not great This anime style light novel has a few light sex scenes. The tagline of this book is "Killer nuns. With gatling guns.". That sounded so wonderfully ridiculous that I just had to try it. I was expecting over the top explosions, hokey dialog, and a sloppy plot that made no sense. This is better, and less than that. Two positives here, the writing is moderately better that what you usually find in a light novel, and the author Gideon Caldwell does not lean (as heavily) on cliches, tropes, and visual tropes. The hero only rubs the back of his head once in the entire book. And yet, There is a mellower less bombastic kind of dumb to be found here. More of an intellectual laziness sprinkled with moments of dumb. when it all fells like "Good enough for anime" you're disrespecting the source. This book never goes completely off the rails, but it does stall out toward the end.
What happens when a guy finds a ninja girl at a shrine? He will get more ninja girls, evil monks, mecha robots, and a power that will make him a hero.
The things I enjoyed didn't take as long as possible to get the plot running. The beginning immediately begins with an action sequence and leaves a mystery to be solved. It is your typical action anime-like story about a boy meeting a ninja girl from a distant past. After he meets her, the story takes its time to build them up while the MC investigates who the girl is and what is going on. The world is very interesting. It has modern elements with future and magic technology. There is also cultivation, which the MC practices to protect his girlfriend. Although the cultivation is creamy, the story will keep you hooked with lots of questions and satisfying answers. There are plenty of actions, good characters, and good world-building. Even the writing style is fast-paced with short paragraphs, which I definitely enjoyed. And I enjoyed how short the novel is.
What I didn't like are some of the characters are annoying. The MC has a grandmother who always asks him to marry someone. Typical Asian old lady who is tough and demanding. Sometimes she is enjoyable to learn about, and sometimes I wished I could lock her up inside a closet. HAHAHAHA! The MC has a male friend too, who has an interesting backstory and he helps the MC solves some problems. But he never shuts the hell up and he is always rooting for the MC like a cheerleader. And the MC starts pretty bland, like most anime male protagonists. However, he does get better based on the choices he makes, and he does become a badass toward the end. The only thing that doesn't make him a complete typical anime protagonist, he is not afraid to have sex. And speaking of sex, I know the story is adult rated, and it is a slow burn harem, but I think the sex scene ruins the romantic build-up between the MC and his love interest. If those graphic scenes weren't in the book, there could be a nice mystery about the characters getting engaged. Will they? Won't they? That would have been a nice romantic development between. And Bunni, who becomes the MC's other ninja girlfriend? What she does to make the MC horny for her is unbelievable, and I almost liked her before she did that. (No spoilers)But those scenes are there and they are skippable. Just my opinion.
Overall, without those naughty scenes, the story is well entertaining and easy to read. I recommend it to anime fans and harem fans together. And I guarantee the next book will be enjoyable too.
Its a toboggan ride in the dark, you don’t know the ride that is to come
This is about a struggling medical student, who somehow gets mixed up with a female ninja statue that comes to life ( his life is a bit full of this happening), and his life just gets better. Or worse. There are monks in strange helmets. Ninja nuns, prosthetic arms with Gatling guns attached, and another statue, and his Granny. Don’t forget his Granny! The story takes off, and just as you feel it should let you off for a breather, it grabs you and off you go again. The fight scenes are well written, the atmosphere is electric. The storyline terrific Did I say I liked it? Are you still reading? Go and get a copy now.. you wont regret it. Book 2 is out shortly you have a little time before you need to buy book 2...
I do not recommend this urban-fantasy-steampunk-sci-fi-harem series. It lacks cohesion, it has sharp borders with the characters and drastic changes in technology versus ancient civilizations and themes. I feel that these drastic technological advances (robots, time travel, trams, flying cars, and at the same time an ancient civilization living in a police (monk) totalitarian state). The idea that the main character, Micah, can translate or learn from the "ancient" (more modern civilization) by having sexual intercourse lacks common sense, logic and rational basis. I read this book because I really liked the book "Dungeon Goddess" (Sleep inducing-alternate realities, fantasy novel), but this book series does not have the polish, the cohesion of the other book. It felt as if a three year old-perverted-child were telling a story (full of fibs and made-up stuff).
I am looking forward to the rest of the series immensely! I found the the world building very visual and distinct. The book does a good job of creating the world of Neo-Hokkaido. Very creative and original story, and I look forward to how the author continues to build on the world. I also enjoyed the fact that the book wasn't mostly about sex between the main character and the girls. I've read other books that were mostly about the explicit sex scenes while sacrificing the plot, which to me, really turned me off to the book. I would, however, like to see some more emotional connections between the main character and the girls, specifically how they each romantically interact differently with him.
A enjoyable book that has a cyberpunk theme to it.
I was giving a advance copy of this book for a honest review. I enjoyed this book as it has a dystopian cyberpunk cultivation mashup theme to it. The pacing was slow at the beginning as the author worked to develop the relationship between the MC and the secondary characters. This definitely made the characters more vivid and real than in most books as the story unfolds. The action scenes are well written and the world building is really interesting as I wonder what all the monks have hidden from the world. I really enjoyed it.
My Ninja Girl, by Gideon Caldwell, is a fun, leisurely read. The scenery is interesting, and a college kid gets to hang out was hot, older women. Fun stuff for sure. Okay, the older women aren't MILFs - they just happen to be from the past. Duh Duh Duhhh.
Micah, the aforementioned student isn't the best of students - but then again, his heart really isn't into work; he's trying to live up to an idea.
And when statues come to life, his life is forever altered.
This kick-off serial provides some answers along the way, action, and yes - a reluctant hero starts to evolve.
It is a lite read and should keep you turning the pages.
ARC provided. Read September, In the Year of Hell.
You can definitely tell this is from the same auther of cherry blossom girls because it felt like the exact same kind of story to me. Thus like all his books could make it much past the half way point before i dropped it.
I felt like the character was just repeating the same day. There was no character progression other then the main characters magic dick. And the main girl in this harem was just a blank slate for no reason other than plot convenience. If it wasn't only a $1 to read i wouldn't have given this book a chance and now that I did I think it was the perfect price for this boring book.
Though the book starts off a little slow as it sets the storyline, the pace quickly shifts gears and hits overdrive. It's all about sexy Ninja Girls kicking ass and taking names as they continue their battle 1500 years into the future as they fight for the future of their people. I finished the book in a couple hours, it ended way too fast for me, now I need to wait for the next book to come out. After all, the only thing sexier then a Ninja Girl, is a Ninja Girl bunny!!!
It looks like another successful best seller for this modernised cultivation harem series. The moniker Gideon Caldwell is doing well for this type of series and im enticed into another which i think deserves at least 4 books as the action and the characters appeal to me. So help support my demand for more sexy writing as i want more and it looks like it needs 100 people to say i love it.
I get why he did everyday things for a while. It makes sense that in a totalitarian state that if you blow it, you REALLY blow it. But the writing seems shallow at times. And sometimes you wonder "why is this side character helping MC so much?" or "wait she just killed a random dude? What just happened?" But its a junkfood novel, what do you expect? Still, the last chapter made me want to keep reading so job done.
Loved the quick read. The characters all start out as standard stereotypes to get you started but are already becomming more fleshed out. One thing: I know the villians are supposed to be evil but our MC just believes ecerything he is told. We shall see if it turns out to be the truth.
Fantasy alternate-history ninja adult harem with time travelers One dark and stormy night, Micah Regent, the MC, praying to do well on his uni exam, witnesses a fight between ninjas, and ends up with an amnesiac young woman on his hands with no ID chip. Things quickly progress from there, and get more interesting. Engaging characters and fun read. Highly recommended.
It's refreshing to read a book which is well written while not taking itself seriously. Strong women in the protagonist's life transformed this from anime wish-fulfillment into a plot to be taken seriously. Clear-cut good versus evil makes this stand out from the dark antihero competition.
With the title the novel has you know there's going to be battles
There are some adult situations the protagonist gets himself into - but they are not the driving force to the novel.
It is an enjoyable read about female ninjas being brought to the future by a somewhat failure of a college student and the battles he becomes involved in to rescue his world.
This is how a manga (No cartoons here rhough) style book should be written. Plenty of action. Well fleshed out characters. A story line that draws you along. If I had one complaint it's I finished quickly and now I want more. I'm recommending it for sure.
It starts a bit slowly, as it starts to build the world, but the action picks up fairly soon. It's an excellent read, and I am very much looking forward to book 2.
This was a truly epic read, the MC is great, and the story and world you get dropped into beside him is riveting! I cannot wait for the next installment of this fast paced sexy fun series!
I really enjoyed this book. The characters, the action, the storyline. I liked it all. It does have some harem elements, but they don't take away from the story at all. Give it a shot, you'll like it.
I like the world it is not your standard story world.I liked the charters and found it refreshing and fun. I can't wait for the next book. It was worth the time and I will re read it again when the next book is ready. Thanks for sharing your story it was a blast
Two thumbs up!!!! Now this is how you start a new series!!! A real review of how the MC comes to realize there destiny!! A truly masterful story and first rate characters!!! People keep this series rolling!!!!!
I picked this out as something to buzz through because it looked interesting. Welp, yes.. I’d like to see where it goes and read more. So, thanks.. Now go read this and nudge for more..
It was entertaining but some parts I didn't understand due to lacking the Japanese cultural background. I still enjoy reading this book and looking forward to the next one.
Fantastic story! I love the slow buildup to all the action! Gripping! Can't wait to see what happens next!
My Ninja Girl is such a creative novel! Full of charachter development and plot building! I'm so excited to see the action that comes next! Will Micah marry Yuri after all?!
Thoroughly enjoyable, always nice to the MC have to grow into his role. Unexpected setbacks and twists to keep them grounded while slowly growing into the hero needed.. here’s hoping for 3 more books to really keep us reading
I tried and tried to get excited about a new book series, but after several chapters I never felt the exciting spark to want to read more. After 60 pages, I got tired of some kind of action.
