A beautiful story about ten-year-old Douglas who has recently lost his mother to cancer. The boy and his father haven't been able to communicate since her death, and the house is a place of sadness. One day, Douglas finds an injured Greylag goose and so begins their mission to nurse the bird, and themselves, back to health. As father and son work together and start talking again, they discover much more about Douglas' mother than they ever knew before and connect with each other on a deeper level. This story deals with bereavement, school bullies, father-son connection, and the enormously healing power of nature and art. Illustrated with gorgeous drawings throughout, this is a story that will stay with you even after you close the book.

I’m shouting loudly about this book, its one very touching tale but at the same time it’s nice for a young boy caring so much for migrant birds.

Silverwing is a story of loss, resilience and connection and with gorgeous illustrations throughout for children age 8+.

This story starts of really sad, it brought tears to my eyes. Douglas’s mother had cancer for two years with cancer. The doctors kept saying that she would get better, but she never did and died. Before Douglas’s mother had cancer, they would run together and laugh together and they both went looking for geese.

After Douglas mum died, the relationship between Douglas and his dad had been difficult, they didn’t really talk much to each other?

Schoolboy Douglas, finds a Greylag goose with a torn wing. He takes it to his shed, placing it in his dad’s dog bed that his dad had since he was a boy.

To Douglas he thought that the silver markings on its wing tips were so beautiful, he decided to name it Silverwing.

When Douglas’s dad finds the Greylag goose in the Shed, he surprises his son, Douglas and puts it in the garage where it will be much warmer.

With Douglas having to care for Silverwing, this seems to bring Douglas and his dad a bit more closer.

Silverwing is an emotional but a rewarding story about son and father repairing their relationship after the death of Douglas’s mother.

This was such a quick and beautiful read that I just simply couldn't put down.
I loved everything about this book from its stunning front cover, to the writing and the message behind the book, to the illustrations inside. The writing is so engaging, with stunning illustrations and descriptive language that is perfect with a story that is so heart-wrenching at times but also has such a sweet and hopeful message, this is a great book to help children come to terms with grief and loss, I think every school, library, hospice, hospital and grief counselling service should stock this book in order to help children get through something as tough as Douglas is going through.
The characters were well developed and I really took Douglas and his dad, and in many ways Silverwing to my heart and I am still thinking about them after finishing it.
I loved it and I have passed it on to a the daughter of a friend who recently passed away.
