A hard to follow crime story

Three partners are looking to retire so they set up a deal with a younger crime lord. It all starts to go wrong as they become haunted by their past sins. What’s going on is always just inferred making it difficult to follow. Lawrence Campbell’s art doesn’t help. I had a hard time following who was who.

“What if the ghosts are there to remind you of all the terrible things you’ve done?”
A quick read, but a thrilling ride. In addition to the gritty story, I enjoyed the noir style of the artwork.

Quick read, but one filled with mean spirited fun. Really enjoying these AWA Upshot books.

A very simple story of 3 pieces of shit who hurt and killed a lot of people and their past catching up to them.

I actually enjoyed the plot. Watching three worthless pieces of shit finally get what they deserve worked. The symolic parts of it looked great too with the crow and death lingering around them at every corner. It was too bad the coloring was very muddy outside of those shots, and super dark, making it hard to tell who is who. Also, there's no shocking revelation, it's very standard mafia/everyone betrayed everyone, storyline. But it worked for what it was going for and I was entertained most of the time.

A 3 out of 5.

Old Haunts collects issues 1-5 of the series written by Ollie Masters and Rob Williams with art by Laurence Campbell.

3 aging gangsters are who are on the edge of retirement are confronted with their past.

I think this story has a very good premise but is hindered by confusing writing, undefined characters, and art that keeps everyone's faces in heavy shadows making hard to tell whois who and what is going on. I did enjoy some of the ambiguousness of the story but could see where others may not.

I read this book via Kindle Unlimited.

Old Haunts follows three ageing gangsters who come together one last time, for one last job. This is a dark, scenic story of a lifelong bond turning sour. These three men have stood together against everything, but can they stand against their pasts coming to get them? When you've murdered, whether directly or indirectly, hundreds of people, can the past stay buried? When a deal goes bad, and the FBI agent who has been on their tail for years, motivated by her suspicions that they murdered her partner and the love of her life, catches up to them, can they escape without the ghosts dragging them down?

The art in this book is so creepy, the apparitions that haunt the three men really do add a spooky and horrifying feel to the book and it genuinely feels very cinematic when reading it. I loved the added twists throughout this book, that they killed one of their men for betraying them when in reality, it was Alex (one of the key three) the entire time who sold them out. I loved seeing the moody elements of this book get darker and darker as the story went on and honestly, they all kind of got what was coming to them in the end.

2.5 stars. This was not the best and not the easiest to follow. An old mob crew has struck a deal for them to get out of the life and get a big payday. Some things go awry and now them and the person they are making the deal with think each other is trying to screw them and things go left. There is also an FBI agent involved who is trying to find out who killed her partner and where her body is. Then you have some sort of supernatural element that was kind of confusing. Like is this real or is this just the he mob guys being haunted by their past? Seemed to not really add anything. The story blew by really quick and I never found myself quite invested in any of it.

A moody, atmospheric read, a good mix of hoodlum, ghost story and tale of revenge.

Three old criminals reconvene for one final job, whilst ghosts from their past rise up and pursue them for revenge. Throw in an FBI agent looking for answers and you've got a classic noir tale, beautifully told through sparse dialogue and visuals which perfectly reflect the mean streets of LA.

It's a short and taut read, and a lot weightier than a first read through suggests. I read it twice over, to fully appreciate its message and subtleties. It's filled with great cinematic hooks and complex characters, all which help elevate an otherwise well worn story premise.

I found the art and colours really hard to follow the story telling as the characters blended together. I.waa interested in the plot but unfortunately it's visual medium.

Reading AWA Studios’ Old Haunts, I was reminded of Martin Scorsese’s Netflix masterpiece The Irishman. It was a film that took a melancholic approach as opposed to the youthful energy of his other gangster epics, as it was aging lawless men who have passed their prime and are looking back at the sins they have committed throughout their lives. This theme is echoed in Old Haunts, albeit through a supernatural twist.

A brooding, moody, slow build of a crime noir story with supernatural elements. Three retiring gangsters get together for one last reunion before they turn over their business interests to the new player in town. Guilt and regrets haunt them, or are those ghostly vultures real and not the symbolic manifestation of their fears? Things don't go well, as might be expected. Some of the trio can't distinguish between real and imagined threats and things get violent. Add a badass FBI agent determined to get revenge for the murder of her partner more than a decade before and it's an intriguing mix.
Just enough diverse elements here to make me forget the crime novels and/or crime films I'm striving to compare it to. This would be just an ordinary story were it not for the art team, whose fabulous work here elevates this book to a four-star rating. Laurence Campbell's illustrations are gritty and expressive. The major star here is the color work by Lee Loughridge, which needs to be viewed to be appreciated. I would hope to see Loughridge's name among the nominations for best colorist of 2020.
I read this work in the monthly single issues as they were released. A second reading at one sitting increased my admiration for this work.

After living a full life of crime, Little Alex, Primo and Donny can finally put it behind them and cash in a fortune as well. It's more than they deserve considering the dead bodies they left behind. Instead of enjoying their money, their old animosities and buried secrets are coming back to haunt them. Or is it their conscience? There are visions everywhere and the characters succumb to them, one ofther the other. I guess crime does not pay. If only the artwork was cleaner.

Rob Williams is one of those maddeningly inconsistent writers, even on a single project - look at how his Dreddworld work began OK, ascended to genuine brilliance, and then slumped into the gruelling irrelevance of Hershey. And one of the first, worst things I read from him was a crime series, Family. Add to which that I was never a huge fan of Mob stuff anyway, The Sopranos aside, and now Scorsese's hypocritical bullshit stinks so bad that it's putting me off his whole genre. So once I realised that's what this was, it could have gone badly. On top of which, there are notes at the end with co-writer Ollie Masters explaining that yes, the pitch really was 'What if old gangsters are haunted by their past crimes - BUT LITERALLY!', and making the bafflingly ignorant assertion that urban ghost stories are some kind of rarity. Despite all of which, I didn't mind this. Mostly that's thanks to Lawrence Campbell and Lee Loughridge's art, seedy Hollywood glamour one minute twisting into vertiginous Andrea Sorrentino horror the next. Also, it's not three hours long and the creative team won't pitch a shit-fit if you pause halfway.

We have three mobsters whose past is catching up to them. However, this time the past has some supernatural help. I understood the root of the story, but the supernatural element wasn't made entirely clear. The art worked, and the story would probably have been just as good without the supernatural being involved.

A fun little romp, that honestly could have done with a bit more time to breathe.

The art was good and delightfully moody with pitch perfect colour work, but character designs were muddy and hard to tell who was who on occasions.

The story's more esoteric aspects aren't as well implemented as they could be. But a solid little crime caper

Horror meets crime noir.

Gangsters out for their last big score before going into mifia retirement. Great story of how your past actions can come back to haunt you....literally

The artwork is also top notch.

I would highly recommend.

The premise of this story was fun. The ghosts and sins of the past come to collect of three really scummy guys. The story was a bit hard to follow at times but there were some great moments. My favorite was a scene involving a lot of blood like in The Shining.

This one was very meh for me. The premise seemed interesting but it never really sucked me in and I was pretty bored for most of it. Just wasn't a good fit for me.
