Fighting the hunger is a daily battle for Mathias. It drives him to kill, to feast on the blood that sustains the demon within. There is no defeating it, so he channels it. Denying himself the allure of the innocent, he hunts the dregs of the Boston underworld, pacifying his demon with their bitter blood.
His latest prey may be his downfall. The vermin has a son—a golden child—with the sweetest blood Mathias has ever smelled. He struggles to keep his demon in check for fear a single mistake will shatter the remains of his humanity.

So you want to know the person behind the words of your latest novel. Look no further! This is me.
Hi, I'm Kari. I love romance books... in fact I read them through my most impressionable years - so just call me a hopeless romantic. I love when one character fights for the love of another and triumphs in the end. So when you're reading my book, know that you will get your happily ever after!
Twists are a natural part of life. Whether on the pages in a book or in the real world. Lets face it, things that keep us guessing are what makes it interesting. As I also love stories with twists, you will find I try to sneak them into my stories. Doesn't matter if it's romance or a mystery... so keep an eye out.
So, here is the basic break down. I am the oldest of 4 half brothers. I grew up in Utah and I live in Idaho. I burn the candle at 15 ends on a good day - which is why I get the compliment "You look tired" so often- HA.
Some of the things I fill my time with are my family, my business - both writing and teaching preschool, sewing, reading, baking, cake decorating, drawing, singing, home improvement, yard work... well, you get it.
I hope you pick up one of my books and it fills a few hours with entertainment. If I delivered, I would LOVE a review or mention! Don't be shy! Drop a line! I love to hear from my readers too.
This series checks all my boxes. Doing evil for good. A vampire stuck in today's society. A killer you root for. But what is LOVELY and beyond what I can tell you here....you must read for yourself to fully appreciate....is the way all your senses will be used. As you read you will feel his breath on your neck, you will smell the blood, you will feel the asphalt under your feet, feel the chill in the air, hear the sounds of the city fade away as he drives. For new set of fans that crosses The Vampire Diaries with Dexter, The Originals With a Lucifer mixed in. I want me of Mathias and you will too. Well written is an understatement
The second of four (so far) short stories, all to be read before book one, this particular story sets up Mathais' present-day life. It is written well with descriptive scenes, and I can see the action playing out in my head like a movie. I generally don't read books of this genre because they are usually full of bad language or have demonic undertones. This series is clean and, while he does call his vampiric urges his demon, I don't feel like it's written in a demonic way. It reminds me of how a two year old having a tantrum is jokingly referred to as a demon or hellion. The violence is a little strong in my opinion, not so much it would be classified as gore, but definitely more than G-rated. As a prequel short story read alone, I'd give it a 3/5. However, read together with the other three prequel short stories, it's a 4/5.
Good as a short story. Mathias has learned to control his predatory self. He now only hunts the wicked. While this title covers a single hunt with some short side steps, that's all it covers. It hints at a mistake made in the past. It hints at some possible futures. But, like one family event, it holds only momentary satisfaction.
Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Tragic. Twisted. Unpredictable. Wonderful characters.
I’ve never read these authors before, but I was intrigued after reading the blurb. This is a very short read, but I did find it enjoyable. The plot was good, and the authors told us enough about the characters to make for an intriguing read.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I love this whole concept...a bad gut only taking out other bad guys. Mathias can smell the criminals from all walks of life. Rich scum can't hide behind good deeds. Dirty Cops can't pin the crime on whoever they want to close the case when Mathias collects the evidence and uses his inner demons to find the truth. Maybe vampires walking among us wouldn't be so terrible.
Vampires are not as scary as the serial killers they hunt. This is a short but tantalizing story that takes place 10 years before Cutthroat. It gives the reader a peek into who Mathias is. In under 30 minutes, you will have a good idea of whether you love or hate this vampire who only hunts the most vile people who roam the earth.
Not your run of the mill Vampire Saga! From the tag line to the last line of the story - I was hooked. Love that Mathias is such a complex character. Can't wait to see where he is going next. If you love supernatural thrillers - this book is for you!
Excellent book! I read books of many genres, but usually romance, maybe a little mystery but not many like this. I started reading this solely because I love the authors. Wow! They have outdone themselves. I am hooked. Can’t wait for more stories on Mathias!
This is a very well written story of a man struggling to overcome the monster within. Boston 2009 is very short and is a quick read, but the pace isn't overly fast. Mathias is a very compelling character and you are left wanting to read more of his story.
Thought that there would be more than 9 pagee. Didn't even know that it was a vampire book when I first got it. If you are into vampire books (Anne Rice, etc), then I would recommend it.
I was a little wary of this series as I tend to only choose to read paranormal if its got romance. However, I grabbed Boston because I adore everything I've read from Shuey. This short intro was no different. There was suspense and darkness and a grey thread of "hope." I really was captivated by Mathias and his fight to retain what humanity he could. I am anxious for more!
