The end of the world is coming, and Las Vegas has a front row seat. Gunnar Rake came to Vegas for what should have been his easiest job in years: bodyguard an old flame for three days. But when a weaponized virus transforms half of Sin City into monsters out of a Viking nightmare, his cushy job becomes a desperate rescue mission.
And that’s all before Viking gods show up and things really get out of hand.
From Nick Harrow, bestselling author of Dungeon Bringer, comes the first book in the wild new Ragnarok Rebels series, featuring over-the-top action, a harem of deadly and beautiful witches, and enough monsters and magic to choke Jörmungandr.
I enjoyed the book and there were no specific weak points (imo) so this one is a 4.5. The .5 is to differentiate from books I find to be outstanding, and this one while solid and well written/paced was not quite at that level.
An interesting mash-up of fantasy/mythology/apocalypse it was entertaining, and I look forward to a sequel, as the "Book 1" promises. Not sure if that'll work as well as the first book does, but when one shows up I'll read it and tell you how it rates.
I really enjoyed the first book in this new series which is definitely targeted towards an adult audience as it is heavy on the sex scenes in a reverse harem adventure which is also full of scenes of violence and war. Our hero Gunnar and his harem of deadly and beautiful witches have been chosen by Odin the all father to save the world and to find the three relics in order to combat the forces unleashed in the form of a virus which turns humans into monsters who in turn are working for the Goddess of chaos Hyrrokkin. The group of heroes are imbued with magical powers which they really need as they end up battling hundreds of jotnar and a behemot who together with Hilda and Arthur Drake are the chosen on the side of chaos and mayhem. The downfall of Hyrrokkin's chosen was their greed for ultimate power which inevitably led to their killing of one another unlike the loyalty Gunnar had from his volva who did not mind calling him their Jarl and following his orders to serve Odin's cause. This is a great fun novel where as usual humans are used as pawns by the Gods in their game for dominance. I look forward to reading book 2.
The story avoided going go into depth for things by use if magic has a cover umbrella for anything the authour didn’t understand are didn’t want to write a complex expiation behinds its workings. The authour does with virus mostly has he gives no scientific facts into how it was made or magic was added on to, and the sound was how technology and machine just started to break down and only gold-type weapons would work on the bad guys. Also the MC gave no explanation to why the government didn’t try to contact survivors(ex. they have tryed was dropping leaflets from the airs, used government siren system threw out the city to talk to people,or send in a helicopter).
P.S.
You should also haded a glossary at the end of book to give the Definition of Viking works and sayings. An a section with a brief summary of the Norse gods and myths who appear in the book or with links to inform the reader about them.
So haven't read anything by Nick Harrow in the past. I was looking for something to the me over between Eric Vall, Logan Jacobs and others and found this on my other books to buy from Amazon. I am glad I did. This book is great. Vikings see cool and I love the amount of research the author put into this book. I lost count of the number of times I went searching for stuff on the net because I was intrigued by what was happening. As an FYI there is no avengers style Ragnarok here. This is down and out violence and an uncontrolled manner that sees the heroes go from 0 to hero with some awesome power ups. I loved the fact that it's not always roay being a hero and in true Viking style nothing ever comes for free. I cannot rate this book enough and I am looking forward to book two. This is an author to follow.
From bodyguard to Odin's Champion, a old realm is reborn.
A bodyguard heads to Vegas to help an old flame, when a new virus is released, the world is forever changed. People are turning into monsters, but some are turned into heroes. To save his ex-lover, a bodyguard must save Sin City from another realm. Earth is being remade into an older realm as it is being invaded lower realms. But Odin has a new Champion, a new Jarl leads the fight as the world is remade, and heroes are born.
I won this in a Facebook contest and normally don't go near harem books very often, not that I'm a prude it always just seems gratuitous to me. It was no different in this one but setting that aside what you are left with is a unique, entertaining story, it flows well and introduces some Norse mythology which you don't see that often in LitRpg, which made it all the more entertaining for me. Ill likely check out any follow on books in the series as well.
Viking lore is always a win although a bit of a summary would be handy at the start and i feel a few other niggly points would also help this along. Otherwise an enjoyable read and something I would follow as Harrows other works have been good in the past.
What a fantastic storyline. The Viking essence of the story is very well written. As is the the way the characters were written. I can't wait for the next book in the series.
Now this is the way to start a new series!!!! Truly awesome characters, with first rate interaction and As always awesome storytelling!!! More soon please
Starts with the character showing off how cool he is by droning on about weapon specs. Then he starts dribbling about some lady’s voluptuous curves in this horrible sex pest kind of way. I’d had enough of him by then I’m afraid.
