He had to die to meet the (monster) girl of his dreams. Jack is a survival expert who wakes up after an avalanche on a snow-covered mountain, and has to fight for survival every inch of the way. Then he meets Lelia, a beautiful monster girl from a tribe of women who need Jack’s help. They need protection… They need a warrior… And more than anything, they need a man. Jack’s about to give them everything they want.
TL:DR. A potentially good story ruined by terrible prose. DNF @ 60%.
Swearing. I'm not one to shy away from crude conversation or clutch pearls at the use of "offensive" words. Having said that, I am a stickler when it comes to lazy writing and Jack, the protagonist's, use of swearing was one of the worst cases of this that I've come across. There must have been 1 or 2 F-this or S-that on every single page. Every time I came over it, the verisimilitude (my new favourite word) of the story was wrenched away from me and I was left with the impression that Jack was a moron. A novel is a medium in which you can pick and choose what you present to the reader. If you choose to write a character that thinks and speaks in fluid sailor, it will present them as uneducated. Something that Jack clearly was not meant to be.
Inconsistent POV. The story shifts erratically from a retelling of events (e.g. a hero recounting his tale to an audience) or a more traditional written first person style novel (e.g. the audience is there with the hero as the events unfold). It's jarring to be within Jack's mind going through his ordeals with him and then be pulled back and have Jack refer to me as "you". It's clear that Mr. Lang wanted to have his cake and eat it too, but it's an amateur mistake and shouldn't have been done.
Slice of Life. Monster Girl Mountain is a meandering novel where Jack jumps from one minor problem to the next. If you are in search for a novel with a grand overarching plot, you won't find it here.
Had potential. The sad thing in all of this is that Edward Lang isn't a bad writer. Sure, he's made some bad writing choices that shouldn't be overlooked but alongside it are kernels of a truly heartwarming tale. The eroticism is used sparingly, like icing on a relationship that had been given time to develop into a delicious base.
This is a great isekai adventure, and an excellent jumping off point for a new series. Though only the MC and his number 1 Girl got the full character treatment, there's hope for expansion in the next book. A pleasant surprise!
This was great from beginning to end. The characters actions felt believable (for the most part), the action was gripping, the dialogue was well written and funny at times and of course, the sex was great. It’s what you’d expect. Hopefully, the tribe’s English improves more, and they reunite with their bigger tribe. I’m glad there’s no cliffhanger. It works well as a standalone and possibly the beginning of a series. I hope there’s a sequel to this. It deserves one.
This got a 5 from an author who does stuff I like, so I gave it a shot. Personally: not impressed. The MC is competent I guess, but he swears excessively in his internal monologue which was a bit annoying.
The story itself was nothing special with a heavy emphasis on describing survival techniques. I have books for the latter, I don't really enjoy reading a lengthy description of making snowshoes in my fantasy books. Read a few other reviews and see if the book is for you, but my thumb is decidedly sideways on this one.
I really liked the MC, story line was a successful reimagining of the isekai plotline. That in itself should be award worthy! Give it a try. Definitely recommend this book. the only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is because of small grammatical errors, such as " my then my luck ran out". That kind of thing. Didn't detract from the story enough to bother me that much.
This was a survival adventure I really enjoyed. MC was well developed, believable and suitably heroic. Maybe a nit or two because he was a survival expert, but stumbled on some basics. Nothing major or dramatic or disruptive to the story flow. There is great action , good vs evil and lots of realistic survival in a stone-age environment. Bring on the next installment, we be waiting!
The author has set up a world that was very different than most and the characters could be very interesting as they develop. The MC was interesting in that I do not think I have ever read a book that has the MC as being a mountain climber. Overall it was a enjoyable book to read.
This book was a fun and entertaining read, with a light hearted story. The MC was good and smart, the tribe of women fun and well written. The plot was good and the survival aspect of the story was believable, the adult elements were well written too. I really enjoyed it and will check out the next in the series.
I am a wilderness survival buff so I totally understand the struggles the MC goes through. Author is pretty thorough about the dangers and pitfalls the MC goes through. Awesome first book sir! Where is #2???
Story is simple, which is good. Writing is even better. I could not put it down. First book I've read from this author and I'm off to look for more once I submit this review. The book cover art is also quite good. Very happy and impressed.
I liked the out door and climbing info which was interesting. The main character was different and refreshing. The flow was good and the monsters were likeable .I will look forward to seeing the next book
Interesting to say the least! A different view of a possible portal story.I enjoyed the characters and the plot is definitely interesting. The only question is where do you go from here.
Nice first effort from Mr Lang. I'm no Bear Grylls, but the information about survival in winter conditions came across as authentic. Good action sequences and a growing harem made for an interesting read. Looking forward to his next efforts.
Fantasy harem adult situations Great read from start to finish, the pace never lagged. I'm loving forward to a sequel about Jack and the barbarian stone age snow elves in their cave. Recommended and enjoyed.
Kinda started slow but got a little better on into it. Him being a mountain climber. He prob doesn't know about buildings or structures for permanent residence
Hope to see more, going from survival to thriving. Really nice story. I loved Jack and Leila and all the other women. Very nice world building not too complicated. Hope there's a follow up book exploring more of our unnamed planet.
This was a very fun and easy read. I enjoyed the characters, details and the complete fantasy setting. I needed a light read and this fit the bill to a T. Perfect.
A very interesting take on dimensional travel. The MC is an enjoyable character to read about and his lovely ladies make for an awesome adult fantasy adventure
I was on the edge of each page and was waiting to see what Jack and tribe would do in times of stress and I loved the survival aspect of the book as well.
I took a chance on this book. And it paid huge dividends. The plot and overall story was really good.Started off kinda slow. But it was worth pushing through to the end.
Very well written book for this type of genre. Has some of the same fault as much books of this type but over all a great start to a new seieres. Going to give the next book a try as well.
