Demoted and tossed into the farthest reaches of the universe, Trooper Callie Justice finds herself surrounded by the Ventura's crew of slackers, dimwits and delinquents. The depressing realization that her career is over, combined with her uncontrollable lust for the ship's sexy captain, confirms it--she's losing her mind. Captain Rafe Vantry led with his ego when he bet he could take the worst ship in the fleet and turn it around. But nothing on the Ventura works, least of all the crew--and the idea he's going to lose seriously pisses him off. On top of that, the Relaxation Program has malfunctioned, matching him with an unknown woman for a night of anonymous sex. His strict sense of protocol forbids it, but the lure of losing himself in a woman's body proves too great. As things heat up between Callie and Rafe in the cool, silent darkness of the Relaxation Chamber, everything around them falls apart. A supervirus is running rampant, and Rafe's suspicions of sabotage grow stronger when Callie's personnel files mysteriously disappear. When the veil is finally lifted, the glaring light of truth will reveal what is real--and what could destroy them all.
Leigh Wyndfield lives in rural Virginia with her fat cat named Ayra, two lovable rescue puppies, six chickens, and the best guy in the world. A city girl at heart, she’s embracing the mysteries of growing blueberries and waking up to bunnies running from foxes in her front yard. Traveling and working a day job round out her time – oh and running for exercise (a slow, painful process she’s been told is good for her, although that’s hard to believe since it never once has been fun). She writes romance fiction that is out of this world.
I usually go for sci-fy romances that include hot aliens and things like that. This was just two spaceship captains getting in on -although there's a boss x employee relationship- amongst other space shenanigans. Everyone here is human, although there are discussions on half-human beings. It was ok, but I'm not blown away or anything. The grumpy hero was a tad too detract to actually make this a full on romance, imo. It was insta-lust with a HFN ending.
Also, there's a full on foot fetish exploration scene. Never had I ever read one before, and now I'll never be the same. It was both grosser and sweeter than I thought it'd be.
This was an enjoyable read! I would have loved a more fleshed out conclusion but I still had a good time with this novella. I love a positive meddling matchmaker!
I actually really enjoyed this, and it’s surprising because it’s not really my genre of books I usually enjoy. I kind of wished it were longer even though I was looking to read a short book! The plot was just so fascinating for me and the spice was quite nice. I enjoyed the building romance. I’ll check out more of this author.
Leigh Wyndfield might as well have named this Perfect Heat!
It was so great to read Leigh Wyndfield again! I’d read her previous Heat series (and in fact, skipped downloading In Heat because I’d loved it a while ago, but thinking it might now be updated, I’m going to do it now), and instead bought on Kindle Unlimited a couple of titles I didn’t recognize, starting with Veiled Heat. What I found was the same great writing, explosive emotion, fabulous S-E-X, and totally satisfying story telling I remembered.
Callie Justice used heart as well as skill in her space ship captaincy, and for that, she lost her command and was consigned to “the rubber room,” where the Troopers who were deemed useless were sent to waste away, or quit the service. Callie was given the chance to go to the Ventura as a communications major, and she took it. Why? Because she loved flying, whatever it took. But on the Ventura she found a ship falling apart, a crew who seemed incapable of doing their jobs and a surly captain who strangely filled her with desire as much as his poor attitude frustrated her. He seemed incapable of inspiring or training his crew or acquiring parts to repair the ship.
As for Captain Rafe Vantry, he knew there was something different about his new major, but because he couldn’t get her records, he didn’t know much about her. It annoyed him, like everything else aboard the tub he’d been given to command. In a fit of pique a few months before, he’d claimed he could command any ship in the fleet and get an excellent evaluation. He hadn’t planned on the Ventura. When the ship’s Relaxation Program notified him that he’d been assigned an intimacy partner, he decided against his better judgement to take advantage of the program’s unique method of “relaxation.” No sound or sight let partners experience each other in new and anonymous ways.
How Rafe and Callie discover what they really want—in the darkness and the light—makes for one fantastic read! Highly recommended!
Fantastic follow up to the 1st book in this series. The first book was ok, but this one was a true story - well developed and complex. Ironically the last sent ace of the book was the only thing that bugged me. This book is hot and fun and interesting. Definitely recommend.
For what this is, this book is shockingly good. A short, punchy space opera romance with a good amount of spice, a reasonable plot line to tie everything together and a world you might want to see more of.
Seriously, for the average level of books that get advertised on Stuff Your Kindle Day, this one is very much punching above its weight. Sure, we could see more of the character development, more of the various things in play in the world, some more to the characters outside of their relationship to each other. But those are things that would just elevate what's already a pretty good package.
I zoom through dozens of books of this nature every year, and this one is a 4-star all the way through.
A fantastic plot, full of suspense and surprises! He is grumpy but handsome, she is beautiful but resentful! He is determined and desperate to save his ship! Someone is sabotaging him at every turn, she is confident and the only one able to do the work! Even his computer is against him! He must sacrifice his happiness to for fill his duty! Will she understand, will she forgive him, will it be too late? Read and see!
Great story that includes a mystery of how the worst (most incompetent and/or lazy) crew ends up on the Ventura except for Captain Rafe and Callie. As well as some great world details with a mystery illness and a half human race that may be rebels. I would have enjoyed if there had been another chapter or two going into more detail on those aspects of the plot and/or more "real world" romance. The story ended far too soon!
I am a speed reader, I can finish 7 books in a day. Which means I finish one in an hour or less... It's rare I slow down to read a book 📖 so when I do slow down and actually read a book and not speed through it - I LIKE IT! 😍. It's been awhile but this book was a great read. Characters had distinct personalities and you felt the story.
Another amazing story! Rafe and Callie soulmates, that challenge each other. They bring out the best of their mate and see the love and compassion they feel.
A good read for people who are in to the series recommend highly can't wait for the next one of the series a really enjoyable read but quick shaping up to be a enjoyable series must read the next one of the series
I’m a sucker for space military romance. The story was well told and the heat was definitely there. I’ll gobble up the whole series this weekend and then be sad that it’s over. Why do I do that to myself?
Veiled Heat is a steamy adventure romance filled with intrigue, treachery, and steam. Love that the story is original, has a AI with sass and has both a smoking hot hero and a strong heroine. 4.5 Enjoyable.
Not as great as the first story but still really good. I like that it is a completely different set up but still in the same universe. I'm not sure that I'm crazy about the sentient ship but overall I liked the story. When you find your person, you have to be patient.
I honestly didn’t like Rafe through most of this book but I adored Callie and they fit together, not perfectly but with just enough broken edges to make them work for it, but their love is definitely up for the challenge.
Admittedly this was not what I expected but it was very good. Rafe and Callie were on a mess of a spaceship each for different reasons. But an ai made a decision for them. Enjoy
I enjoyed that this story had substance with the heat. I liked the characters, even M.A.R.L.I.S had character. The story was a quick read but the author was able to build a world and get me vested in the plot.
Found this on my Kindle, had no idea I ever downloaded it? It’s very brief sci-fi smut, basically. Almost nothing happens, which is sad since the non-smut parts on the ship were interesting and started to make a story I was into.
Wow, this is the 2 book I've read by this author and she was a new to me author but with each new book that I read of hers I am loving her work that much more. I truly can't wait to read the rest of her books!
How much can you learn about a person in pure darkness and without being able to speak? Apparently a lot! This was a fun SF short romance! The AI computer was hilarious!
