Angus James has played many roles in his life, but none have prepared him for the one he now finds himself in. Alone for too long, traveling the wastelands of what was once the United States, he’s all but given up hope of ever seeing another living person.

Then he finds her.

Naya is a tough and resilient kid, but she’s alone in a world full of creatures intent on wiping out what’s left of the human race, and Angus knows it’s up to him to keep her safe. And for once in his life, he’s determined to get something right.

Battling nightmarish creatures, feral animals, harsh conditions, and even their own demons, Angus and Naya must work together if they want to survive. But being with another person after years on his own brings up painful memories Angus had thought were long forgotten, making the journey as heartbreaking as it is treacherous. It gives him something else as well, though. Hope. And that’s something he never thought he’d have again.

I'm a mom of four, Air Force wife, and author of adult and young adult dystopian, post-apocalyptic, and science fiction. I love intense world building and character driven stories that feature strong female leads - as well as a side of romance - and any end of the world scenario. Zombies, aliens, a distant future where people have no clue how the world ended in the first place, you name it, I will create a story there!

Having lived in a lot of different places after more than a decade as an Air Force wife, I love setting my books in cities I've actually lived in to give them authenticity. I've resided in: Indiana, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, California, and Oklahoma but am currently back in my home state of Ohio where I live with my husband, four kids, two dogs, and three cats.

When I'm not writing, you can find me by my pool (in the summer), getting lost in some binge-worthy show or at a play with my husband, patronizing one of the great restaurants in my small town of Troy, Ohio with my family, or traveling. I want to see everything and make a point of visiting a new place every year!

Some of my favorite books are The Hunger Games, Pride and Prejudice, The Host, and The Stand. My favorite movies are Aliens, Jaws, Signs, Say Anything, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and The Greatest Showman.

ANGUS was a beast of a book for me to read. I haven’t read but one and a half of the Broken World series by Mary, so this one I wanted to take my time with. I am a huge fan of Mary and her zombies from her other books. And I knew practically nothing of Angus except he was a racist and an all around a-hole. But if he was getting his own book, after all this time, there had to be more to him. And I was looking forward to knowing him more.

I loved what I saw of Angus’s life in this amazing story. I felt every emotion he ever experienced as he fell back on all of his old memories. Memories of good times and of pain. Memories of those he loved and those he lost. And in the end, both of these became one.

The book was truly amazing and has me eager to read the rest of the Broken World series; even after all I learned. Angus’s transformation from who we met in the beginning of BROKEN WORLD to where we find him in ANGUS is nothing short of miraculous. You will hurt for him as he retells his life to the sweet girl he finds in this barren and desolate world.

Such a fantastic story and it deserves all the stars!!

This book was like visiting family you've not seen in years. It was heart felt, gut wrenching, but left you with incredible feelings and hope for the future.

Kate L Mary's Broken World series has been one of the best series I've ever had the pleasure of coming across. Angus James is the character arc of all character arcs ever written. Beginning as a not so good, trailer trash, racist, Angus' character has put readers through the ringer over the course of this series. At first you absolutely just hate this man with all your heart, but then Mary gives you these sneak peaks at this incredible heart and unconditional love this man has to give that just reels you in further and further into the series. I believe her book Angus just reinforced what you already knew about this incredible character.

Admittedly, I wasn't so sure I wanted to read this one. Crazy, right? I was at peace with where Mary left her Broken World characters. They were happy, had a working settlement and the plague what they'd struggled to survive seemed like it was dying down. Life would go on. So when Mary said she wasn't quite yet done with Angus, I was a little worried about my favorite group of survivors and not sure I wanted to know what difficulties laid before them now. However, I can easily say I was so wrong. Yes, there is pain and heartbreak within the pages of Angus, but it's done so in such a way that you remember each struggle, each epic moment in her series, that it makes you proud rather than grief stricken. Seeing Angus cope was also another layer to him. The introduction of hope with Naya was also an added bonus. Angus had a purpose. It wasn't all for nothing.

This series has meant so very much to me over the last year. I've utterly enjoyed these characters, Mary's messages of hope despite the world and the loving relationship that strangers developed into a family. I thought I was ready for Broken World to end. However, I am very pleased to have read Angus and look forward to whatever Mary has in store for her readers.

*** You absolutely must read Broken World and Twisted World series in order to truly follow along. While that may seem daunting it's sooooooo worth your one clicks and time.

This was such a hard book for me to read. Not because it sucked or was badly written, but because of what it showed me about characters that I have learned to love and cheer for. There were so many Ah-HA moments interspersed and I sincerely enjoyed getting the backstory on so many different events and characters that the other books either just implied or didn't touch on at all. It was truly a unique and well written epilogue for one of the best series I've read to-date. If she wanted to stop, she could and you should have a feeling of closure. Of course, I hope that she continues the saga because that's what makes me a serial junkie. I always want to know what happens next. Well written, but I will have to wait for awhile before I try a re-read. It tore me up too much to go at it again right away. Read the series....Broken World, then the Oklahoma Wasteland series, then The Twisted series....THEN you will be ready for Angus.

Excellent story!

What a follow up! Man, I love this book. So many questions I had when I first read the excerpt. This book sure didn’t disappoint! Every person I had wondered about, even those I had forgotten about, everyone’s tale is told. Normally I’m not a huge fan of flashbacks, but the way the memories were brought to the surface of Angus’s mind and unfolded for us to see...they just felt so right.
Thank you Kate for giving us another excellent book from The Broken World, I wouldn’t have missed it for anything!

Wow what a read

You know a good book by all the emotions it creates, all the hurt it makes you feel and all the crying you feel like doing while reading it . Angus was such a great read, we all loved to hate him in the first books , but this book showed us what was going on in his mind throughout some of them and how he coped while everyone he loved perished at some stage during his life. It was so sad to see how all of our favourite characters ended up ..even though they had lived for many years , it was still heartbreaking. The writing was so good . Angus's life finally changes for the better when he meets Naya , and with lots of flashbacks , you see his journey with Naya finally brings him some peace. Loved the ending , and Angus is now one of my favorite characters.

Understanding Angus

Angus was the man you loved to hate in the series. He infuriated readers as he insulted Vivian and tried to protect Axl in his own way. Even then deep inside there was some goodness that would show itself in small ways. This book was riveting, Angus has survived all those he loved and was was wandering aimlessly until he met Naya. She was certain there was a safe society where other people lived in this dangerous world. Angus is the only human able to survive the new breed of creatures and decides to make it his mission to help Naya. The memories and flashbacks fill in the story of the Broken World characters and their fate. There was love but so much sadness and through it all Angus endured and grew to be the man he was meant to be all along. This is one of my favorite books by Kate Mary. It is a story of love, loss, and redemption. I enjoyed seeing his life through Angus 's point of view. Wonderful journey!

Fans of Kate L Mary's Broken World Series will love her newest book in the series, ANGUS. This book takes place several years later. Angus has been such a strong character in Kate's books, and as he and Naya walk, he remembers bits and pieces of his life, telling stories about many of our favorite characters, and what happened to them. It was a wonderful book, a closing for many of the characters from the past. I shed a lot of tears. A lot!

I never really hated Angus, perhaps because I could empathize with his struggles gave me a little more patient where he was concerned.
I knew he’d turn out to be awesome.

I cried so many times in this book, reading about Axl, Vivian, Parv - all of them.
Huge crocodile ugly cry tears.

I hope one day we get more Broken World. I need them to be part of my life. I need to see Nala grow. She is going to be amazing!!

It’s so good to read more about the character you love but should probably hate! So many old friends made appearances in this book. It was great to find out what happened to them good or bad! Thanks for bringing us back to this world Kate! I absolutely hope there is more to come!

Wonderful

To revisit old characters and memories and realise even after months the characters are still as real as they were when I last read about them. There are only a couple of authors these days that can keep me reading until a book is finished and Kate L Mary is one of them.

Gut wrenching

Well written, but so gut wrenching. A story of love, redemption, and healing. Angus has grown and matured, but lost so much a long the way. Read all the Broken World and Twisted World books first.

Review:
I have made it no secret that I love Kate L. Mary’s novels. She has been an auto-read for me, since the first book I picked up by her. I don’t think I’ve rated one of her books less than five stars, and here we are again, with Angus.
I love the Broken World Series, so I was pumped to see Angus. Now, Angus is a jerk. Or at least, he starts out that way. But Kate L. Mary has an ability to create deep, layered characters. What looks cold and cruel on the surface, is slowly revealed to be a person just trying to make it in the world, and he does have kindness in his heart.
The world, per usual, is terrifying and feels very much like it could happen. That’s always the scary part. I love the world building, and am always in awe of how easy it is to escape into these novels.
Loved this. Highly recommended.

Angus.
You HATED him in Broken World (at the very least, and probably for more books to come).
Now.
Angus.
Everything you've EVER wanted to know. What made him the Asshole we got to know in the 1st book. What made him the man that Rambo fell in love with? What made him the man he is NOW?
Why was Angus smiling in the strip club in Vegas? How did his family fare after the failsafe was released? How did other survivors we now call family survive. The Church.
You will love Kate for this book. You will curse her, you will hate her at times. But when it's all over, you will be fulfilled.

Thank you to the author for the ARC. I really enjoyed this book. It isn’t like most of the Broken World books, in that it is more of a character novel with bursts of action. Definitely read the other books in the world first (start with Broken World). Highly enjoyable

I’ve been reading the books set in this world for a few months now and I had finally reached this book! I knew that it was going to be a hard read because of who the main character was going to be because I ended up loving him as this world has grown! After reading this book, I can say that it was heartbreaking! The plot developed at the perfect pace and it was very intriguing, so it only took me a few sittings to read! This book takes place in the future and there’s a part of me that wishes that I hadn’t read this book because I wanted to imagine Vivian and Axl and all the other characters we’ve come to love living happily every after safety behind a massive wall and not reading about how Angus lost them all! I did sob and I knew I was going to! The characters were amazing and made this book for me! Angus was of course the main character, and at the beginning of this world he was racist and sexist and a character that you hated! As the series progressed, Angus changed a lot as his relationship with the other characters grew and they ended up meaning everything to him! In this book, Angus had lived for over a hundred years, so he had lost all the characters from the Broken World series! This book showed how alone he was and about him finding people again and a community! Naya was a secondary character in this book and Angus found her on his travels! Naya was strong and she looked after Angus when he needed it and the two of them supported each other a lot! I loved Naya and she had her head on straight and helped remind Angus how human he was and how loved he was! This book was written fully through Angus’s point of view! I was expecting it to be written this way because of the title of the book and after I read the synopsis! I loved it only being written through Angus’s eyes because it was his journey and let me see how much the characters from the Broken World meant to him and how their deaths shaped him as he grew older! This book was also written in third person, which surprised me because I think all the other books have been written in first person! I normally don't like books written in third person, but I understand why the author wrote it this way and I still thoroughly enjoyed it! The ending of this book also had a little surprise and related to another series set in this world! I now can’t wait to continue reading the books set in this world! I know that the next series I have to read is eight books and will start right from the beginning of the apocalypse with a new set of characters! I’ll definitely be reading them next and I can’t wait to read their journey and see where it leads! The cover for this book also suits it perfectly and the cover model is also the perfect Angus!

Angus has been alone in a desolate world for a long, long time now. Everyone he has ever known and loved has died and left him all alone in this dead world. Angus has lived for so long that all the zombies have died out. But never fear a new kind of zombies is here. A new stronger and maybe a little bit smarter zombie.

Angus is all alone until he runs across a sixteen-year-old girl, Naya. Naya’s mother has been bitten by a zombie and needs Angus’s help to make her better. Naya’s mother sent her out to look for someone to help. I think Naya thought or was hoping she could find someone to save her mother but probably knew that was not going to happen. I wonder and think that her mother more than likely sent her out so that Naya couldn’t experience what was going to happen next.

Angus takes Naya under his wing as he knows she can’t survive in this world alone. He is determined to keep her safe unlike everyone else in his life. He believes that he failed everyone else in his life.

Angus relives his past life through memories. He remembers all the people he has loved and how they helped to change his outlook on life and people. Through his memories, we get to see Angus’s good side come out. We learn how each of the memories affects him and how each memory is special to him in different ways.

I enjoyed his trip down memory lane as I got to know a little bit about some of the other characters in this world and as I have not read all of the Broken World novels but I do plan to read them in the near future. I have read Broken Stories and the first book Broken World where I got to meet Angus.

I know with no more books than I have read in this world I have just barley stepped in and it has left me wanting to more about Angus, Vivian, and Axl. I do hope to see more of the characters from the Broken Stories. Oh, and I can’t leave out the zombies as I do love me some zombies. Oh yeah, a big fan of The Walking Dead world here. I would love to see all of the Broken World books on the big screen.

As with all of Kate L. Mary’s books I highly recommend Angus to all those apocalyptic, post-apocalyptic, and zombie fans out there. One-click your copy today to begin this epic journey through the land of the dead.

Audible listen. Good narration. He fits the character of Angus well; nice tone to his voice. Good recording quality too. Recommend listening experience.

Death galore in this book; any semblance of a happily ever after for the characters from the Broken World and Twisted series is destroyed. The experiments on Angus have caused him to be long living, so he’s outlived all his family and friends; things have not been rosy for the characters from these connecting series. Angus thinks he’s all alone, but runs into a young girl and her mother; the mother is dying and asks Angus to protect her daughter. Angus and the girl set out in hopes of finding a new settlement they can be part of; it’s rough going through the zombie lands. They are dealing with some hybrid zombies; a more aggressive and faster type of zombie. The story goes back and forth between Angus’ present day and memories from his past.

The writing is good and there are some interesting parts, but pretty much the only storyline is Angus remembering the past; some details about his life before the outbreak, his love for Parvati, but mainly about how the people in his life died. His memories jump around in time a lot too, so it felt disjointed at times, but I did enjoy learning a bit more about those characters. Just too bad they weren’t many happy moments for Angus and the rest.

Overall, I think I’d have been fine not reading this; probably better off because I could’ve kept imagining that the characters from this series some how found a way to live long, happy lives in this crazy world they found themselves in. That’s not this series though; this series goes for a more doomsday/possibly more realistic way of ending things. I’m going to go with a 3 rating. Good writing, good bones, but just not how I want the stories I read to go.

Angus had been plodding across the countryside for decades, south in the winter, north in the summer. He had met survivor after survivor, appreciating the company until each of them passed away, and he moved on. As an immune long-term survivor, medical science {CDC} apprehended him, experimenting on him for twenty years until his escape. The CDC, through their experimentation, had physically changed Angus. The most noticeable change was that his wounds healed very quickly; there may be other effects. Now, he had not seen another living soul for years. Angus was lonely and depressed with many regrets. There was nothing else for him to do but move on; one more day. Until Naya, a young, dark-haired girl of fourteen standing before him. Much of the story detailed the background of Angus, highlighting his brother Axel and wife Viviann, his ex-wife Parv, and his daughter Glitter. Angus recounted many, many flashbacks, some for his introspection, some for Naya. The friendship with Naya became a relationship and they depended upon each other. It’s a beautiful story about change, understanding, self-examination, and sadness; so much sadness. It’s a bit slow at times but I just kept listening while thinking about how certain things related to my life. The past is full of memories, lost family, friends, and lovers. All that’s missing for me are new friends and lovers. Thanks for the tale, Kate. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Subtitled Angst!!!

After reading the Broken World Series and the Twisted World Series and the Oklahoma Wasteland Series I decided to skip Angus because I realized that with the synopsis I was due for a whole world of hurt. I however got sucked into the universe once again with the Far series. And after finishing that series, I wanted more from that universe so I reluctantly picked up this book Angus. I still haven’t decided whether it was my best decision or my worst decision. Probably a mixture of both. What a visceral emotional experience!!! Definitely a deeper insight into the complicated psyche of Angus but the annihilation of the characters I had grown to love from the original series was heartbreaking 💔 and the new hybrids were terrifying and devastating and depressing. What was happening to my world? I’m still reeling. The end! My emotional turmoil and reeling aftermath is a testament to the genius of the author. The ending (for now) was sort of cathartic. I’m not sure if I could take any more angst though.

Wonderful Read!

I have read the Broken World series, Far series, and the Twisted series and am listening to the Oklahoma Wasteland series on audible and have enjoyed each book. Angus does not disappoint and his evolution as a character was epic. This book made me laugh and cry all the while I was cheering him and Naya onward in their quest to reach a settlement. I admit prior to reading Kate L. Mary's first book which for me was the first book in her Far series where I first met Angus,I was not a reader of zombie fiction however I took a chance and am glad I did. I highly recommend this author for fans of zombie apocalypse fiction and fans of highly complicated characters. Angus is a stellar example of just such a character and I hope his and Naya's story continues in another book. I will hope for it which is fitting as an underlying theme in all these books set in this universe the author carefully created is Hope!

This book had so much potential

I tried so very hard to find a common ground in this book that would make me like it. I love the apocalypse genre and thought woohoo I found me a new author. Unfortunately, this entire book is a one-sided conversation in the main character's mind he can't utter a sentence to this young girl he saves without completely getting lost in the past it bounced all around it was horrible and boring. All the things he was remembering should have been cut to a quarter percent and had them find people along their way wherever the hell it was they were walking. The whole one-sided conversation in his head was just awful I never even could finish the book I

Angus (Broken World #8) was a great read by Kate L. Mary. Angus has often been referred to as brother, asshole, survivor, savior, prisoner, and god. None of those roles could have prepared him for the role he finds himself in now. He has traveled the wastelands alone and has all but given up hope of ever seeing another living person. Then he finds Naya, a tough and resilient kid. She's alone in this world full of creatures that want to wipe out the human race. Angus knows he must keep her safe and he's determined to get it right. They must work together to survive these nightmarish creatures. Being with Naya brings up painful memories that Angus thought he had forgotten. I enjoyed reading this book and can't wait to read more by the author.

Best ending to one of my favorite series. We knew Angus was still alive. It was insinuated in previous books and you already know the CDC is going to be shady like that. This was written like a farewell letter, looking back on every book and telling Angus’s side of the story. And his wife!! Omg I did not see that coming at all! His kids name was hilarious and fitting and a nod to his upbringing. Even if you don’t read the twisted world series or the Oklahoma wasteland series this one is a MUST.

I’m not sure what I expected him to look like but when I saw the cover of this book I was like yeah that’s totally Angus. Read it! Follow this author on Amazon and read everything she kicks out. She’s a hidden gem in the post apocalyptic world

1000 stars!!!!

So when you end a series and think all of your beloved characters are safe... think again!!! This book was amazing and probably the saddest book I have ever read!!! This book tells the tale of what happens to our favorite characters from the Broken World Series... I read of the series first before reading this book! I would recommend that! It makes it more gut wrenching!!! I say that but I loved this book!!!! I just can’t get tired of Angus!!!! I hope there is another story because I would love to hear about what happened to the rest of the people from the Oklahoma series!

Awesome!

And she did it again…Kate L. Mary, sucked me in, and even though she was killing my “friends”, (the characters I’ve fallen in love with over the previous books), she makes me want more! Writing good reviews for books I love had always been difficult for me…. Just know that this book is amazing but to really appreciate it all, you really need to read all the previous books that have to do with Angus and the Broken World or Oklahoma Wastelands! Not as many intimate scenes in this book but there was so much more than that. I wanted to cry throughout the whole book…but it’s a good thing.
